Hi Anna! Because you mentioned wanting to see what is going on inside his vocal tract, I wanted to let you know that Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice actually partnered with Will to have this procedure done and she will be posting a video in the next few weeks to reveal their findings. I thought you might find this interesting to keep an eye out for!

You asked whether he is familiar with throat singing. He is. The Charismatic Voice (Elizabeth Zharoff) and Will aired the video of him with a cam in his throat and he did Tuvan throat singing as part of it. Absolutely fascinating it was.
You saying this also confirms what I suspected, which is that he specifically uses those techniques to further his metal vocals. Which is actually genius tbh.

hello Anna! please check out a japanese band called Dir En Grey, they one of the biggest in Japan, all the musicians are virtuosos and their vocalist called Kyo has a 6 octave vocal range, possibly even higher, up to the 8th octave. His clean vocals are absolutely amazing, and he's mastered every type of growl and scream. He's known to switch voices completely mid-song or even mid-sentence. His voice bottoms at A1, and he's hit into the 8th and possibly 9th octave live (debated on whether or not falsetto and whistle notes count, but he belted out the G#7 from the diaphragm). Check Vinushka androgynous version LIVE HD to see how insane his vocal abilities are.

If you listen to this treating the vocals as a instrument in the mix, and focus behind the chaos on the lines in the guitar and orchestration it becomes a beautiful, kind of melancholic and very cathartic piece of music. People need to relearn how to listen when checking extreme genres such as this in order to understand why it's appealing. Listening and Active Listening is two different things. The vocals provide energy and direction.

When she transitions the song to the melody with a wicked, deep and dark voice. She only did it once, for good reason. It added to the Shamanic like trance Diana was putting us through. But to sing in a similar manner for the entire duration of the song, is a bit too much, I think. Not my cup of tea, but you made the journey worth while. Best wishes to you always Anna. 🙏✌👍🇺🇸🇩🇰🏴‍☠️

Hello, I don't speak Finnish but I could listen to you speak it all day. Also yes, Will is familiar with throat singing, he mentioned it in his interview with the Charismatic Voice when he did tea time with her. The fact you picked up on the link to throat singing is impressive. I don't know how familiar you are with throat singing but there is a discipline called sygyt where the position of the tongue and the very minor movements of it changes the pitch, just very slight sliding moves changes the dynamic of the vibration a great deal an allow you to achieve the iconic whistling notes. When throat singing, we position the mouth over the throat by tucking the chin slightly and open the throat to achieve those really low pitched tones. In harsh vocals it is referred to as "tunnel throat." Where you place your tongue and how you move it allows you to evoke different sounds. You can for example perform the classic type of throat singing and combine it with sygyt (ends up sounding a little bit like a didgeridoo) or you can press the tongue against the back of the teeth to "warble" or different parts of the mouth to effect a different sound.
Another thing with harsh vocals is you can generate them by breathing out but you can also generate them by sucking in (thought it is functionally more difficult because of the way breath works obviously). It's like people who can't whistle by blowing but they can by drawing breath in. Same thing with harsh vocals and you can get some unusual sounds that would be hard to produce with the breathing out kind of harsh vocals. You can also pinch the space when sucking air in to create higher pitches. You can even get it to sound like a wolf howling or a baby crying and you can slide it down in pitch and open the throat as you draw air in to get a really deep sounding almost roar. When Will is doing that iconic snarl he is using both techniques and it sounds like he is using the position of his mouth during that inhale/exhale of those breaths to position his mouth for that hard drop after the snarling.

Great reaction and breakdown, I think you have already done Tatiana from Jinjer and Courtney from Spiritbox (if not they have some great one take performance) and other I would suggest is Justin Bonitz of Tallah (he is also a vocal coach) and his one take performance of Over Confidence. Enjoy.

"This has a sort of classical feel to it. After all the distortion and blast beats of course"
I 100% get what you mean. That is the reason I started listening to Lorna shore in the first place. It's orchestral. Or at least orchestral feeling. I don't have much deathcore in my playlists... but I've listened to (since will joined that is) this ep, and more specifically his 1 take tracks, at this point, thousands of times over. The music is just so moving to me, which is something I never thought I'd find myself saying prior to 2021
Gotta say the half Finnish half English is really interesting! Not a language I hear much... so it's really cool to see it mixed!

They definitely infuse their deathcore with the more symphonic side of black metal, which kind of goes against the trend of what "has been considered "cool" in black metal circles for the last decade or so.

The breakdowns in this song are insane! I love the tightness of the band and Will's theatrical and skilled vocals. I also like the consistent presence of melodic elements in the song. Anna, Elizabeth from The Charismatic Vocalist channel had a laryngoscopy done on Will and posted a video of it. There were a few surprises. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/Ua8SuWNPrLE/v-deo.html

Thanks Anna, it's always interesting to see your analyses, even in a vocal field that's not your specialty.
Fun question: if you'd first-watch this performance... muted (so video only), what sound would you guess the song have? Would it have clean vocals? 😁

Fyi, Elizabeth Zharoff of The Charismatic Voice actually has literally scoped Ramos's throat (with his cooperation, of course) in a video! It hasn't aired yet but if you're interested you might keep posted on her channel. She also did an extended interview with him, which is already up.

I think part of Will's insane range is the underlying fry he has through most of his vocal flexing. I feel like he is someone who mastered fry before any other technique which may lend itself to how well he pulls off the rest.

will Ramos on kyl rehellisesti ehk nykyajan metalliskenen parhaimpia vocalisteja ja hän on mun isoin inspiraatio mun vocaali opettelussa, ja oon odottanu et joku suomalainen vocalkoutsi breakdownaa tän nii voin oppia viel enemmän willin tekniikoita joten kiitoss, ja jos haluut nii voisitko reagoida sellaseen bändiin kun Black veil brides ja kappaleiden nimet on Knives and Pens tai sitten Born again
