    The fact that you mention his vocals being not vocals, but another instrument is so refreshing to hear from a vocal coach perspective.
    That's exactly what I tell people who say they aren't singing or that they can't understand what they are saying. That's essentially what that vocal style is. Another instrument in an arrangement.

    It's really cool that you were able to immediately appreciate the musicality of their music! One thing I don't see many vocal coaches mention about Will's vocals is the *huge* amount of breath support he has to generate to create the projection and sustain he can have in his low screams/growls, which are done with the true folds held open. I'll also echo others recommending you react to some of Will's one take vocal performances. They show what he does even better than the music videos.

Hell, I can make probably 60% of the noises he does and sing along in the car, the problem is as you say, the breath, on a held scream I'm running out 2-3 seconds before him

    Several folks are recommending Will's one-take vocal playthroughs, and these are indeed amazing. They also have Will's voice right at the front of the mix, so it's easier to hear everything he's doing.
    However, I would like to recommend some other Lorna Shore music. First, for sheer energy, I'd recommend Sun//Eater. Also, Lorna Shore have written a ballad: Pain Remains. It's in three parts, but the videos are clearly labelled.
    Also, shout-out to Austin Archey on the drums. He is, I've been told, a living, breathing human being. But he has the rhythmic sense of a metronomic robot. The speed and precision of his double-kick work is just amazing.

    That layered growl is sometimes referred to as a "double harmonic". You layer it a little like you do with overtone singing but you are adding a guttural distortion instead of the hum that is used iin most cases. So all your diction comes from the clean layer and the distortion sort of frames the diction. That way you don't lose the lyrics in the "mud" that you hear in other metal styles. Alex Terrible is fucking amazing at the double harmonic.
    To achieve that goblin scream it actually really helps if you can do an imitation of gollum, because then all you have to do is add the fry because your tongue and mouth positions are already set and a lot of the "high" sound comes from the smeagol voice.

    • @TheVocalyst

    • @nightshade7240
      @nightshade7240 Рік тому +4

      @@TheVocalyst It's actually kind of amazing what you can do vocally if you can imitate other vocal speech patterns. For example if you add a subharmonic and slightly alter the Gollum voice, you can achieve a pretty good approximation of a stereotypical robot voice.

    • @2174863
      @2174863 Рік тому +6

      Dickie def mastered that goblin voice 😉 I heard Wills biggest inspiration is Infant Annihilator so it makes sense he sounds pretty similar when it comes to highs and you can hear it in Into The Earth. Dickies biggest inspo is Travis from Cattle Decap which is a huge influence on deathcore which all stems down to the newest bands and yet all their voices are so unique.

    • @nightshade7240
      @nightshade7240 Рік тому +5

      @@2174863 Absolutely, much as I love Will and think he is doing amazing things, Dickie was doing it first and, not to remove any of the incredible skill Will has, but Dickie does it better, just by the sheer amount of experience he has had.
      Why Lorna Shore has blown up so much is probably because we've moved beyond "metal vocals are just noise." Before Dickie you have Travis, so on and so forth but at that time you had a lot of the left over aspects of the satanic panic and metal is just noise that didn't really allow them the space to go as, comparatively, big. As prevailing opinions change about metal we see break outs. Will is the goblin prince to Dickie's goblin king. The fact that people are viewing harsh vocals in a new light, means there is nuance there and channels like this one and Charismatic Voice and Kardavox are really bringing styles of music into a lime light that it hasn't operated in before. There are "harsh vocal" metal bands that don't get any of the credit they have deserved. This is kind of a golden age of metal where audiences and media are all cross connecting and appreciation of metal has never been to the degree I find it is today.

      Lorna shore is blowing up because the music is more relatable to more new listeners and wills personality. Lorna shore has always been a great band. Add a great front man and more symphonic elements you start getting the ingredients for success. Not to mention to the hellfire came out at a time when most people were at home looking for rabbit holes. I listen to deathcore a ton and find it hard to listen to infant. Find it to chaotic. Bands like worm shepherd/ Lorna ect have mastered the blackened sound and made it easy to listen to

    I got into this genre of metal with Cradle of Filth in 1997. I loathed the vocalist Dani Filth at first, but I loved the music so much I continued listening. Over time (and not much time) his voice sounded more like another instrument which added elements the others could not, and that's when I just became a huge fan.
    To this day, their song "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids" is still one of my favorites, and their latest remix of it is even better. One of the best guitar riffs ever and one thing that I love about Cradle specifically is (I don't know how to put this) but their music, albeit black metal is also like a lullaby in that you can thrash around and headbang if you like or... you can calmly sway back and forth to it just as easily.
    I find it relaxing and I haven't found that with any other black metal artists.

    Not sure if people have said but there is a video where a throat and voice analysist but a camera down his throat while he was doing these screams. Is like an hour long video but it starts at around 24 minutes into the video and is really interesting.

    The One Take versions Will has put out on his channel have the vocals more dominant than the instruments which from a vocal analysis might be more useful also they have better lighting and camera angle so it is easier to see Will's body posture and throat/face positions. Plus he has one where he sings clean covering Sleep Token.

    Its funny, I've heard growls and screams in tunes for years, I think the earliest memory of such would be King Diamond, but it took Will doing 'softer' music for me to really fall in and give it a proper listen ... and I can't say it's something I'd listen to on a daily basis but I find that I'm much more inclined to enjoy it.

    yes, you are hearing two or three layers of vocals at times! That's pretty common practice, to record a few different sounds on the same lyrics, and then layer them to create a deeper/more complex sound overall (or just to sound "demonic" lol). I'm sure it's already been suggested, but he has a single-take video of this song, without any layering or editing. Definitely worth checking out. (and he has a couple covers of Sleep Token songs that will blow you away. He can SING too!)

    The musicians in Lorna Shore have achieved the kind of precision and tightness that elevate a group above its contemporaries. Add to that their strong sense of melody and Will Ramos's stunning range of growls, screams, bleats, and squeals, and you have possibly the premiere deathcore ensemble working today. I loved your commentary, Beth! Keep up the variety on the channel...without forgetting about Angelina Jordan, of course. :) Another band that weaves strong melodies into their aggressive sound is Arch Enemy. Let me link you their live Tokyo performance of their song Nemesis, with former vocalist Angela Gossow: ua-cam.com/video/fS-YHJbmAXs/v-deo.html

Instead, I got to experience a song I love through the new eyes of an open-minded, knowledgeable lover of music (in all its forms, apparently!) Thank you for being more than a just a meme on this one - loved your good humor and depth - I think we all learned something.

    Nice !! You went for the technical aspects first (Elizabeth's video... it humanizes this wonderful artist... Will seems to be a real kick to be around).
    There so many variations Will can put forward... I think we only barely touched the surface (wipes off the mucous) on what Will can do in that laryngo-scope video. I believe Will has a live vocal-play/one-take video on this song as well, although he definitely crops the lighting JUST RIGHT so there remains a little mystery as to some placements... at least, that's the feeling I get (and of course, I want to see a combined laryngo/real-time CT-fluoroscopy so we can pick out all the tongue and softpalate placements he does.
    Anyway.
    Will (and the rest of the band) are a real litmus test for trained vocal coaches... I'm sure you'll do great!!
    (posted just 15 minutes after you posted this... and so far we haven't made it more than 4 minutes into the piece... I love it.
    "So high"... yeah... how does one get that much 'tension' in false chords and floppy pharyngeal bits? Love this stuff. Continue with the nerd-fest, plz!!

      Wills highs are very good and proficient, but my favourite vocalist for highs is either Dickie or Greg from Shrine of Malice. If you haven’t heard it yet, you should listen to “The Awakening” by SoM. His whistletone screams are insane only person I’ve heard of that can do it as good is Gui from Beyond Deviation.
