I'm not a professional tiler, but if you reach a stopping point, make sure to place your leveling clips for the next roll before leaving. I've make that mistake a few times
Very good ..The Time and Dedication is the key to success. Yes we all lose but we Never forget how to climb that ladder Again. Fredd
Man, great stuff!! I can remember tearing that tile out of homes back in 2000/01 and putting in travertine or tumbled marble. Now, its back in style! Love it. Great content. Please keep up the good work!
Contracting is like farming you do it til you go broke.. haha. 53 and still doing it for the passion. It's cool making things look nice. Learning a lot of new stuff from your videos. Thank you
😆 that’s probably not a bad analogy. Was just telling my wife, I haven’t taken on a remodel project in 3 months now (just editing and creating these courses)
I spend way less money when not contracting 😆 crazy how much is spent continuously on the business
This is the most comprehensive real life tiling lesson I have seen. BRT never disappoints but this episode is special! So much to digest and for those who really want to hear what is going on I suggest to turn the video speed down. Secrets come to surface and easy to catch and understand. What do you think Steve, when custom cutting-in these niches after the fact, instead of membrane-ing them to use hydroban (go-board) board and their sealant? Would that be more forgiving on overlapping and easier to apply? Also it would eliminate fiddling with chewy membrane in such confined tiny spot. p.s. am amazed how much YT material came from this bathroom.
Thanks for all your continual support 👍
It was a safer bet on this project to cut in later, mainly because the tile was not completely chosen before I was waterproofing things. If I had the tile on site beforehand, I would have done the niches during the waterproofing stage (would have made them an inch bigger than needed for fudge room)
That being said, cutting in was less thinking. Foam board would have been a lot easier, but still cost me time. The membranes are simply no fun at all.
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher I agree about membranes. So many things can cause difficulty and you don't notice them until tile setting. And .. .. they are expensive. Not worth it IMO.
Like the way the wall tile flows into the niche. Classy.
That was really great. Everything you were talking about really resonated with me. I have a handy-man background and I'm at a crossroads. While I've learned a lot, I don't want to be a generalist anymore. Your tiling videos have been really inspiring. Bathrooms certainly have a wow factor that vinyl siding, drywall, windows, etc. just don't have. Your professional experience is really valuable so would you consider doing a video on how to break into the bathroom remodel industry? I purchased one of your courses, and it was well worth the $$$. Keep up the great work, I love your attitude.
Also, why did you opt to use membrane vs go board? Thanks so much.
Thanks steve 👍 and double thx for joining course 👍 that is a course I’ve been thinking about. It’s tough to come up with a foolproof way to bid things. I do have 100s of quotes to share. I’ll definitely consider it 👍
Budget & just a demonstration of another way. There were many shortages on things not too long ago. It’s good to have options 👍 I will say sheet membrane is my least favorite 😆
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher Things like finding customers, pre-estimate checklist, and handling typical renovation problems would be interesting topics without having to get into specific bidding. Thanks again!
Love your channel bud! Thanks for the time you spend on this.
This is the video you promised! I've watched once but definitely need to go back at slower speed. Lots of helpful tips. Thank you. I love, love, love this bathroom. Great job.
Wow! Another great video. So many details and covered well. So happy I found your content!

I wish that you can do what you love to do for as long as you want to do it.
Excellent!
Great job!!
Good job maestro
great video man. incredible life journey as well.
Beautiful!!!
Your videos are seriously so helpful. I am doing a full bath DIY remodel right now, and I'd be lost without your expertise. Also, I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on bankruptcy, advertising yourself, and being a landlord. Keep up the amazing work!!!
Great to hear 👍 thanks 😊
Just bought my first flip..I'm with you the economy is eh. Glad I came across your Channel.
I just tiled my 54sqft bathroom floor and it was the first time I used a leveling system. I found them difficult, particularly once the tile is set it doesn't want to level off, it's sucked to the floor bc of the thinset and doesn't want to move (level off)
Time spent viewing your videos and courses is time well spent. I learn valuable tips with every viewing. I was wondering how to get around the kerdiband build up in the corners and thanks to you I'll not be afraid to take a little off the tile back.
Schluter tells you build up is not a problem if you do it right.
That's Just not accurate. The inside and outside corners get too many layers and build up cannot be avoided. Grinding is a pain.
Is the same true with the wedi band? I used the wedi band around the entire tub flange because the wedi board is on top of the flange. I saw you do this on another video. I tried to keep the 620 as thin as possible when embedding the wedi band but there is a slight build up on the entire first row. I was hoping to make up the slight difference with slightly less thinset. Do you suggest I grind?

It is a game changer if used correctly.
You can set it right there on your plywood you got in the tub.
Thanks again! I really like the option of a long pot life using Ardex X5. I am installing over DITRA HEAT - is the Ardex X5 a good option here?

Love this guy… wish I could hire him for everything instead of doing it myself! 17:04
Thanks for the great videos! Question please - what are your thoughts on pre-filling the waffles on DITRA HEAT? I'm concerned about accidentally nicking the cable if not pre-filling but have seen some posts saying that pre-filling results in hardened pieces pulling out of the waffles when setting the tile after pre-filling.
I actually prefer to do that. Makes it much easier to tile the next day. I rarely set wires and start tiling same day anyways.
Plus I’m always doing drywall work in mornings, so it’s easy to sweep off before tiling if you prefill.
Biggest issue I see is if you have excessive activity over it. I wouldn’t keep it that way for many subcontractors to walk over it day after day. Prefill & tile next day 👍
Will be watching this one. Have you ever built a steam shower? I recently took a steam shower build and it’s my first one so if you have any tips that would be super helpful! I’ve got the ceiling pitched 2” per foot and sealed up with Schluter top to bottom but I’m sure there’s something I’m not anticipating. This will be the first time installing tile on a ceiling and they’re 12x24 😅
I know the TCNA says 2” slope….but that’s really hard to make look good. Guess it depends on situation and layout
I’ve only done 1 steam shower. Always wanted to do more, but most people couldn’t afford it. My thoughts are if it’s used commercially multiple times a day, then slope to those recommendations, otherwise I’m leaving ceiling as is. The one I did do had a flat ceiling. No one ever complained of dripping ceiling.
The waterproofing aspect is a bit over kill with systems too (in my opinion). Wedi would probably be the best system for this if you can afford it. Otherwise I’m pretty sure hydroban board can work with sealing the seams with liquid.
Pretty sure Wedi works the same way too. Again all overkill for a steam used periodically. Schluter is all a pain, but I use quite often too 👍
Good job
Thank you very much for the advice, the old tile steam shower failed at the curb but it was 20 years old with no waterproofing at all
I've said before that I live in Ecuador and we don't have membranes here, so if I want to place accent tiles (5mm thick) among field tiles (10mm thick), how do I make them level?
Help! My contractor did not fully fill our shower tiles with grout, leaving a lip on nearly all tiles and in the niche where water will settle. He has air pockets and some discoloration. I think he mixed the grout with a mixer tool, and must have wiped too much product off. He also grouted in our plumbing pipe for the shower head so we have no access to the wall. The pipe now sticks out with no way to attach our finishing pieces and shower head arm. Ugh. I really appreciate your videos and wish we would have done it ourselves. Any advise for adding grout to the existing project and filling in spaces that need it? Do we need to remove grout and start over or can we add? Much appreciated for your ideas. T. Casson
36:26 you can see you got 4 whole tile from the niche to the wall.
Your niche R.O was 8 3/8 ×16.
Did you know 8 3/8 would give you that?
wow, those leveling tuscan spacers are expensive.
Any preferred cheaper alternatives?
I don't understand why you didn't frame a slightly taller RO on both the top and bottom for the niche during the framing stage that you could adjust with shims when you are ready to install the backer. You could even leave the top and bottom framing members off entirely and use pocket screws to attach them later. Cover the entire wall including the niche opening with drywall and membrane like you did. When you cut the opening for the niche you will only have to adjust the top and bottom members of the RO and, attach the backer to the frame.
How many bags of the thinset did you use on this bathtub tile? Corner board on the wall 🤯 to set the edge. I just finished my half wall tiles I wish I would've use that method. Note taken.
Tub area was only 2
Bought 5 bags of x5 for all tile
And 1 bag Schluter all set for membrane
I never thought I'd be taught how to tile a shower by Owen Wilson
be cool if you did a deck build course

F@&$ that linoleum knife, margin trowel buddy.
thinset way too dry, workplace and grinder in the same room? dust is gonna kick on your applied thinset and prevent it from bonding, you are very sloppy and dirty when working.
