This video just killed my DIY schluter install. I was doing these same penny tiles onto the schluter pan, not knowing or seeing the tile requirement for the shower pan. I called Schluter and verified the 2"x2" tile requirement/suggestion. Now I'm watching a thousand videos on mud base installs. Glad to find out now instead of after the fact. Saved my project from catastrophe by 1 day. Thanks Tile coach.

I'm going to the next schluter seminar and training I can. I'm okay with the kerdi and the waterproofing. I like it, but I am NOT okay with this install. I couldn't shower in that. It would trigger me bad in the AM.
There is no minimum tile size for the foam bases. The problem here was no thinset under the tile...that thinset base will do a good job of spreading out the weight. That said, I used 2x2 square tiles in my own Kerdi install.
I've probably written similar comments on at least 8 of Isaac's videos, but this guy isn't a tile coach...he's a life coach! Everyone could learn humility, positivity, and how to build and edify others from this man. We need more public figures actually doing good, not just talking about it. Love being your student, Isaac!

Thats the problem we contractors who do good work here in NY the home owner don't want to pay the rite price to do their work dont and when the cheaper guys screw their house up they call us and tell us hey can u come fix the job..
Yes I did a total gut for shower pan and walls wasnt tiled yet the homeowner knew something was wrong there was 1/4 hardibacker over drywall for the walls the pan was a cheap plastic pan it sat like an 1/2inch of the floor so of course was flopping all over the place btw the guy was an excavator by trade that did tile on the side which I always hear people say I know how to do tile.
@@danielconstruction8415 my brother I had a business together and we separated it. He thinks that the work will be done by telling a tile guy to do something. When he is in quarantine for COVID I’ve help him and it took 2 days to clean badly done grout job from a Carrara Marble. Btw he is not cheap.

Lol yeah, and thank you for reminding me, when looking at correcting other "contractors" bad work, that it might have been the homeowner who did it and be sensitive to that. They decided to try something new and were probably doing it to the best of their ability.
I lost track of how many jobs I looked at for drywall where they say a contractor quit, grandmother died or whatever and then I see brand new drywall tools sitting in the corner with mud caked all over them. I think to myself - yep - hubby tried to do it himself...lol...I seldom get called back to finish the job because most of the time I tell them it all needs to be ripped out and start new..
I have laid tile for years. Even though most of what you show I have known I still pick up on a few new techniques so it is obvious you are a master at the craft. Also I really appreciate you educating homeowners, a lot have no idea what a quality tile job should entail so having you put it together so well for them helps me charge what I and the job are worth. Well done all around.
Amazing channel and great video. Did my first tile job in a large shower and had to hire a tile setter to finish the kitchen (had another job start and couldn’t do the backsplash in time). The guy I hired has 16 years experience and said my shower tile work was almost or even just as good as his, all thanks to watching your channel and knowing what causes failures/common mistakes/setup and prep etc. Thanks again
I found this very helpful and enlightening. Watching a ton of videos between Isaac and Sal, among others, I NEVER HEARD, the detail, "Nothing Smaller than 2" square over a Schluter foam pan." I applied a pebble mosaic. Seems great; for now.😮 I am just about to do my Next shower, and purchase my floor tiles for the faloam pan TODAY. Thankfully I caught this detail first. Thank you Isaac❤

I think all of us tile installers make mistakes from time to time and that's honestly what likely to have lead half of us here to this channel. Tile at a glance looks easy, however by working with it consistently you learn that this isn't easy. Especially as a young contractor you find out the hard way that when it comes to tile work and getting the correct finished product. If your not correct and plum level and square and if your not gentle or experienced at making cuts. Your bound to get tired after thinking you've already covered all your bases which has already worn you out to start with. Then moving forward to find that this wall or this floor or these joints are not going to square up no matter what angle I try and push them on, already jammed up halfway up the wall and you realize. This mistake will lead to one of two conclusions. Either you take everything down fix and most importantly replace all that tile which is now useless. Or you try and sneak in an inch here.....................and end up being off a mile on the other side of the room because you were too tired or so frustrated to admit to yourself or the customer saying " Look I made a mistake over here and the result is this small section of tile will need to be replaced. I will be happy to cover it for you on the back end of my pay. But I'm afraid at the moment I can't cover the cost. But you have my word I know now and exactly where my problem lies and how to fix it. So if you give me just one day's work to correct this mistake. You will be overjoyed that I've made this correction. As the end result will make for the most beautiful installation you could ever hoped for." I promise you that the customer would not be upset and if they are then they are just Dicks but no matter what you never let them see you sweat. Because when you do correct it. This will pay off big time In the long run. Because that Dick of a customer will have nothing but nice things to say as they walk into a flawless bathroom and enters the one good well off God fearing sweat woman or man they know to use the bathroom and asks "who did your shower and bathroom?" That one reference is all it takes because that God fearing sweat woman or man will hear the story of your honesty and loyalty to your work no matter what those dicks may think about you. Because the quality of your work stands out too well now. And once more your honesty and loyalty heard by this new customer that God has now thrown into your lap shows not just the quality of your work but, the quality of your character as well and she or he want's you to do their entire church for them and those church members want to welcome you to their homes and that's the kind of honest with ourselves we need. Combined with our faith in God to see us through when we uphold to gods will no matter how beaten or broken we have become or tired of sweaty and fed up with this stupid tile that just won't fit...No we relax ourselves take a deep breath and find the answers and then we thank God that the Tile coach had those answers in a short video that lead us to a new beginning in our lives ( and the customer is none the wiser don't watch UA-cam diy on a job). That we would of otherwise thrown away had we just given up and hope that this job pays and the mistakes slip by. Never lose hope and hold onto your faith in God and the rest will fall into place.

I love it when homeowners say they're thinking about doing the job themselves. I say have at it, good luck. I know they say that because they think you're going to lowball the price so you get the job. A properly done job shouldn't just look good but should also last 20 plus years and most people don't see the value in what they're paying for.

@@randybobandy9828 Absolutely nothing is guaranteed long term. I do two years warranty. And I'm unlicensed. "Oh knoes!" Why? You have no understanding how customers treat products. You would be an idiot guaranteeing 20+ years or a lifetime. Warranties last only as long the company may exists. "Lifetime Agreement" is banking on a miniscule number that'll keep records and honor them. How's those Oldsmobile warranties work out? And they *even still had a parent corp*!! I put in a LSA for a $120 Ridgid recip saw 2 months ago. Still not processed.
I started out earlier today watching Issac's 'how to' videos and was encouraged to build out two showers in the new house I'm building this year. Learning how to do it right made me confident. Then I continuted on watching a few of these fail videos, and I now have a lump in my throat. While I feel confident in being able to build the pan and walls and waterproof it all, I'm realizing that while that is critical, it is easier to learn. The REAL skill begins when it's time to set tile, especially with niches, curbs, and kneewalls. Getting everthing to line up, having a well-planned layout, have neat edges, straight grout lines, no lippage...oh man, that makes me nervous. But like Isaac says, no quality tilesetter will come in and set tile on someone else's substrate. So it seems to be all or nothing, either full DIY or full professional, start to finish. I've done backsplashes and 3-wall tub surrounds, but I'm realizing a full shower is a whole other thing. I am a long way off time-wise for the tilework, but I'll be watching many for videos and thinking long and hard before I commit to do it myself. So these videos are very valuable in that way as well. They also make it crystal clear that it's important to get references and if possible even see the work of prospective tilesetters. Even as a DIY guy, I could see how horrendous the quality of this work was.
I am a homeower and have been doing my own tile. Some parts have gone well...but my shower has been my nemesis. The builder cut some corners when when building it initially and i had to rip the whole thing out due to mold and much too late for any warrenty. I rebuilt it and tiled it. And it looked awful. Mistakes were made. So I was forced to tear it all down and start all over. Several Weeks of hard work down the drain and it wasnt like I didnt try to do a good job but you dont know what you dont know. So far the rebuild has gone much better. Thanks for all your tips. I will add one: in case you lay down your thinset too thick and have to scrape the joints before grouting, Dremel makes a bit that makes removing grout much easier.

4:15 this is gold!! A tile contractor that I know through family member was involved in a huge lawsuit after he installed tile on a roof top terrace. Well he didn't do the prep work and relied on the person before him to do the water proofing. Well long story short, the thing leaked and went into the house and ruined the interior. The homeowner sued everyone involved and this contractor ended up paying thousands of dollars in lawyer fees to clear up the situation and on experts to find the failure. This looks like a home depot day laborer special.
Personally, I tiled my tub surround and I used cheap 12x12 tiles. It doesn't look professional but it looks ok. I tried to do everything 110%, which means that with my errors, it's probably 90%. I live in a dry climate which helps. Anyway it seems to be holding up great. I wonder if this guy had used cheap tiles before, and then was hit with these expensive fancy tiles. If I cut those things, they would look like crap. I didn't have any L cuts though.
I finished my first bathroom a few weeks ago. For the exception that I don't have other than a angle-grinder to cut some of the tiles, it came out beautiful.
As a home owner, I watched yours and bunch of other videos before attempting by bath remodel. I got the right materials and tools for the job. Some of things were easy, like installing the cement board and waterproofing with regard. Once that was done laying the tile was way more difficult, as in you know how to do it but you don't have enough practice or experience to get it right first time. ( Same like learning to drive a car, it takes much time spent behind the wheel to easily accelerate and merge while entering a highway, if u know what I mean). Unfortunately for DIYers the first project may be the last. As once you have a bath remodel or two, you have to tackle a different job. So even though you have everything from the right education ( like this video) to tools, materials, it will take more than one job to get it right. I did do my bath wall tiles, and I managed to address the coverage, by removing tiles a few min after install. But had a hard time getting the plumb right and avoid lippage. Had to struggle to remove couple of tiles next day as they were fully set (lippage), it was a lot of work to fix the imperfections to get it as close as a pro job Finally it turned out OK for the naked eye,, but if you take a level and look for imperfections, you will find them like a good tile Contractor would.
I like how he says "Luckily Roger caught on and stopped the work." If a contractor did that i woulda stopped him after a few tiles lol. Roger did this shit himself and realized he probably shouldnt go any further
@Chathura Kulasinghe Did you pay him at the end after you saw the end result and saw what he did was not satisfactory? I mean he did say "the end result will have the quality you expect". If you raised your concerns and he didn't do the job right he did not deserve to get paid either.
Hello Tilecoach i just subscribed to your channel and really enjoy it I especially appreciate the point you made about NEVER installing tile over someone else 's prep work im paying the price for that now as a contractor i love tile work but i broke my own rule which is to tear it all out and start over !!!!!!!! ive had to take out tile i already installed flatten walls etc you name it. and ive been on this job more a month on a small bathroom since 6/6/22. Terrible all contractors have to establish a policy a standard approach to get the best results .
Hey bud. Can you show me where Schluter says not to use that size mosaic tiles on the base? As far as I know they don’t want to see anything under a 2”x2” tile on Ditra.
I agree. I actually called Schluter and they said there is no minimum tile suggestion on Schluter pans. I specifically stated the penny mosaics and he said it would be fine. Only for Ditra is the under 2"x2" suggestion.
Love your tips I've been setting tile since I was about 12 yrs old with my dad back then their wasn't any wander or backer board so everything was floated over lath or plywood and felt I do remodeling so tile is just a small part and I've really got some useful tips from your post.Thank you !@
Great work man and awesome advice, I also install tile , mostly on floors but that level of work is unexplainable just It can all be avoided. Also using a grinder to make cuts , I wouldve used a wet saw if I knew the cut side would be exposed But I’m also pretty young rn so I don’t really have experience using that edging band

So to use penny tiles you need to float the kerdi pan. Do you mean to put a layer of mortar over the pan and let it dry then set the penny tiles? If so how thick of a mortar float

I've seen those, few times happened to me that I bit the job months prior, didn't got hired and.....you are guessing right, eventually I received the call back with sentence like "please help us, the contractor screwed up and your recommendation comes to the rescue. Just month ago client didn't even realized when she called that I was at the job site talking to them personally and giving them the estimate. It just show some people goes for the cheapest bit. Time to time I watch your videos, I'm also from same area. Keep up good job!!
I had a person call me back to save someone else’s mistake this past week lol they didn’t hire me because I costed more than they wanted to pay, now their paying the “contractor” they hired plus me. Sometimes going with the more expensive guy is the way to go lol just saying. I’ve taken the schluter classes and have been doing tile for over 15 years. I’m insured and have a reputable company in my town. Tile and water is not something to play around with or be cheap with. Do it right the first time and it could last a long time! And save you money down the road!
On the other hand, how do I the homeowner know, if a high priced tiler is worth what they charge? I am going to guess that most homeowners see a neighbor's new bath, and say "wow, that looks great, who did you use", without ever knowing whether it was a quality job or not. I have also had guys try to oversell the work they have to do, because just like Tile Coach says "If I don't do the prep, I can't guarantee the repair". That's why I started doing everything myself. Just because someone charges a lot doesn't mean they are any good.
Hey so idk when or if you see these messages anymore or not as this one is 2 yrs old. I’m redoing my 79 bathroom and had to put in a new tub n surround . I’m wanting to tile around the top and on my floor. . I’ve had to build up around the frame . And then on the floor in front of the tub. I’m trying to figure out what to use to fill it n level it and then install large tiles on the floor. I planned on a self leveling compound and then red guard or schluter on the floor as my water barrier. But after listening to all your videos and others on here, no I don’t know what to use!!!
I'm mostly a DIY'er. Demolishing a bathroom currently and stunned by all the shody work I've uncovered. The only surprise is why it didn't leak on day one. I guess the rotten-out subfloor is testament that it had been leaking for a long time. Love your videos. Appreciate the help and guidance. It would be great to hear how it ended. Did you get the job to redo it? Find any more hidden problems? Sadly, I had a similar experience. Well, except for the cheap part... I had done all the prep work, using Schluter materials to the letter (stuff ain't cheap) and hired a friends "great tile guy" to set the tiles. Well, he was getting big for his britches, so he flipped the job to some mope without telling us he wasn't going to do it himself. Got home from work on day one and the first days tiles were set horribly. No spacing in some places, huge spacing in other places. Lots of lippage. I quite literally could have done better myself. Told that guy not to come back and demolished everything he did. I decided to "sleep on it" which was just stupid. I probably could have scraped the tiles off that evening and not had to redo all the wall board and schluter. Cost me about $700 in the ruined tiles, wall board and Schluter I had to replace. Tiled the rest myself and it's still standing and water tight...
I own an old singlewide mobile home so, hiring stuff done just doesn't make financial sense. There was pretty much no way I could make my tub/shower worse than the original installers. Hopefully someday I'll own a real house, and if I need tile work, I'll hire a professional. After seeing their previous work with my own eyes.
Always supervise this type of work! There are literally 100s of videos showing the right way to install tiles. I'm on my third contractor installing bathroom and floor tiles. I've had to relace about 30% of the tiles so far!
I had to tear out a full bath. The 30"x60" subway tiled shower was completely de-tiled in 10 min with a flat bar. The 2"x2" floor tile was pealed up by hand in less time. They use lines 1" apart of yellow wood glue on the floor tile. The install was one week old. It doesn't get any worse when you have to tear out to the studs and start over. At that point, they all are equally bad.
Im an australian tiler. Been tiling for 14 years. I have seen alot worse! Edit: you can use a straight line tile cutters to do "L" shape cut outs. You just gotta no how :) gotta admit. Yanks are a bit behind aussie tilers. Taping up to caulk etc. Should make my own channel
The bathroom in my house I think is also put by the previous owners themselves. All tiles in my house are placed on dots. Grout starts falling out, tiles with cuts on both sides placed in the tiling,... Evertime I see it I get frustrated. Even without knowledge I don't see why you would place it on dots instead of having good coverage

Much respect for such a tactful and diplomatic overview of a bad tile installation. Instead of trash talking the contractor, you chose to be professional about it. The contractor was in over his head, and probably really wanted to do a good job, but just didn't have the knowledge or skills. (Or maybe they really just didn't give a f#$k.) Either way, lots to learn and sometimes it's gotta be the hard way.
The problem with referrals over social media like nextdoor, is you have no idea who is giving the referral. Lots of times it is family, friends etc.... who have zero experience with the person doing actual work on their house, or wives who don't tell you it is their husband and are basically giving referrals when they really are just trying to get business. If you are asking for referrals, make sure you ask the person giving the referral how they are related to the person they are referring. Are they a customer, did they have actual work done by them or are they a friend or family etc... For something like a shower, ask the contractor if you can drop by a current job and take a quick look, or at least see some pics of finished projects. IMO, an all tiled shower, is the most complicated thing to build in the entire house and it takes real skills and experience not to mess it up and give you a top notch product. There are so many little details that must be done right. It is so easy to make little mistakes here and there.

Haha it’s funny because I’m a tile contractor but I work in restoration and customers work on things them selves and end up costing them way more money to fix the work they attempted. And I tell them whoever did this messed up your floors and they act like someone else did it but I feel lien it was them, who knowssss

You should see my bathroom. The contractor I hired did a bang up job. Lippages everywhere, doesnt even know how to do the corners and the installation was not levelled. I don't know what to do. I started removing the tiles he installed to see if I can work it out. And don't even ask me what he did with the vanity.
Did not know the 2x2 minimum rule. What are we supposed to do, calculate the area of individual river rocks on the floor? May look elsewhere for my waterproofing needs. Too much drama with Schluter/Kerdi.

Dang, what a bummer for the homeowner, along with the extra expense over the holidays. That said, least didn’t get completed & used as thats would have cost maybe more down the road from the issues. What you said Isaac about “talking” to ppl is a great thing, that in a TXT/Social world, is kinda going away.....but agree with you 100% Hope get this job, as would love to see more of the work, along with the completed job, as the design of shower isn’t bad, imo. I respect what you just said you didn’t put the person down that did the job you just uplifted the person I love that. You encourage the person to get better at the job you never insulted the person that did the job I respect that I would hire you in a heartbeat. Because it was very easy for people to look at that shower and start insulting the person that did the job and I’m sure it was easy for you to do that but you didn’t do that
A large tile like that needs absolutely level floors, and walls , not only level , but no bows or dips, etc. You need to " strike off" walls. This was common knowledge for every tile guy before even thinking about tiling. The fall of the unions and not paying proper wages has caused illegal work force , this has been going on like 40 years or so. Disrespecting the American craftsman ,, end of rant.. the results ....
Home owners don't often hire actual qualified tradesmen. Hell insurance companies send random Joe blows. Big cost difference between unqualified labour at 10-20$/hour versus qualified at 40-80$/hour.
It's the same here in UK. Here it's because you dont need any qualification or anything to do it and too many people think it's easy and have a go. I worked with a bathroom fitter who believed that the adhesive was only there to hold the tiles on the wall ready for grout. He thought the grout was what 'held' everything together.
@@paulp.l.4869 I agree. I dont work for customers any more. I just buy rental units and remodel them. If I tell a customer I charge $40/ hour they go crazy. Keep in mind I can completely remodel a bathroom in like a week and give them option to install new plumbing while everything is open . So 40 hours at $40 would only be $1600 + their materials ,, a bargain if you ask me ..!! Only very wealthy customers will pay me those rates, and I can't wait for just wealthy customers. If you are a skilled craftsman , , invest in a quality area and do rentals or remodel and sell .. it been this way for like 30 years here in a lot of cities in America.. I am an immigrant myself ,, legal and always pay my taxes... 30 , 40 years ago you apprenticed for 2 years , and would go to trade school. You got paid well and had insurance,, now its just no rules ,, just depends on your ethnicity into which job you get hired on. Beleive me I saw what happened in the construction trades ...
@@recyclespinning9839 You're right about buying to remodel and rent. It's great if you are handy, and have handy friends. That's what I've been doing since about I was 25. I'm an electrician in Canada, tradesmen here get good insurance and pay. I tell everyone that usually the cost of materials is very close to what it should cost you in time. Even at 40$-50$ per hour, I'll be under the cost of materials. I helped my friend estimate a job for his family... The cost of materials was 2700$ and time was at under 500$. The guy complained that "you charged cheaper for your hourly rate for your aunt". My friend was very happy when he wasn't given the job. He was going to get screwed. The potential customer called a few companies and found out the cost was between 5000$ and 10000$. Then he had the balls to ask for a price reduction because some items were cheaper from the companies who had wholesale prices... Ufft. Anyway, if you got this far congratulations on your accomplishments. Sorry to hear about the race issues in hiring. Here companies on government or bigger sites need quotas of minorities. They have a really hard time attracting any to hit the mark. It causes huge issues because one hired that person can't be fired, if not they get penalties and lose the contracts... Even if, really story here, the guy almost killed 2 people on my site. Once right in from of me, with a scissor lift he pushed a guy through a barricade. Lucky the victim held on to the kick plate. The drop would have been 150 feet... Then the minority hire panicked ran away, leaving the guy hanging. On another site his negligence, and failure to follow the rules as usual, caused a death. My only issue with minorities and women (especially women) is that they don't need to go to trade school. They can skip the 1800 hours of trade school and magically get their cards to work. At the very least I'm fine with the ones who tell me they don't know and want to learn. Unfortunately this has been less than 10% of the ones I encounter. The others randomly do stuff, pretend to know what they are doing, and cause problems for everyone. The worse part is because the bosses know those people are "untouchable" they test them out, and when they fail to perform they give them the worse easy jobs. This person I mentioned was given 8 months of "electrician" labor (that was the fair test) and then confined to just drilling holes where he was told to. Most workers aren't very good. I'd say: 40% are trash, 20% can work but not alone, 20% can work alone but don't know why they do things, the last 20% are the all rounders that are reliable. This is the result of the older workers who got in without any school, and weren't able to properly teach and mentor. Then add all the special cases that skip school and you lower the workforce quality. One girl, on a hospital site I worked at, went from installing insulation and firestop to being an elevator mechanic over the weekend... Huge pay increase. Never went to school for either... That's when she told me about the programs, and I verified if it was true. Sadly it was worse than I though... They received better conditions than everyone else. 1/3 off their salaries, up to 20k, was paid by other workers dues. So the employers would not suffer from the hires incompetence as much. Oh and there was a loophole because that subsidy was available for up to 3 employers. The women would "switch companies" and employers barely paid the salaries. They would stay on the sale work site, but in the books they were lent from other companies. I'm always the one fixing the mistakes or doing the harder jobs. I hate fixing mistakes that were entirely avoidable, and that a 1st year apprentice who came out of school wouldn't do. Especially when they were warned, told how to do it, but failed to follow instructions or inform others that they didn't know what to do. You still get gems in the rough though. The best 50+ years old worker I met, in the quota companies, was a woman. She came to me for information and guidance. She was sharp and learned quickly. She admitted to not have any gone to school, and always felt like something was missing. She was hungry for self improvement, which I couldn't ignore and helped her with code and more complex issues. Anyways sorry for the rant... haha I hear that in the states, like Canada, your pay and benefits are very relative to where you are. Moving for a while is an option. Here you can earn between 70k to 180k depending on location. Working for oil, mining, and power plant construction is really lucrative. That is if you don't mind being isolated and 12-14 hour work days.
Ome of the biggest problem we are facing here in Australia is that plenty of Indian and afghanian who work for low prices destroyed the market. Plenty of commericail buling companies now in melbourne they just wanna get the jobs face and cheap not caring whether it is a good job or nah. The price of tiling a wet area ( 2 bathrooms and a laundry and a small toilet is $1300 with Gst yea and the worker charges you at least 350 for one day and we all know no job is being done perfectly in one day. What i can tell is the way work is going in melbourne it won't last. The govermonet should do something about these companies about prices of houses about wadges. Employ trusted supervisors watching work and the way the hoise is being build. You know what sometimes i feel shamed cause the price house is 1500000000. 1 million 500 thousand in Australia and workers are getting paid 1500 and they have to finish it in 2 days max. And this worker can't even afford buying a house like the one he is working in every day. Bro like if i wanna talk about everything i see here it would blow your mind but i can tell you if government doesn't find solutions for all these troubles it will affect the economy and this will not gonna end good in the country favour. Don't trust the commericial building companies anymore i see their work and i work for them everyday. If you wanna build a hoise build it on your own and get professional to build it for you and don't be a greedy person just saving $50 but on the other hand you have to get another tiler to fix what yous have destroyed
That was entertaining. Long ago, I did tile and have seen much worse. The guys who made tons of money had a line : "Looks good from my house.". I never had a contractors license and had an excellent reputation, so much so that the head of the contractors board asked his unlicensed plumber to ask me to do his job, I refused. There are no tests for contractors on competency, it all has to do with paying the legalized extortion quarterly. Most of the contractors I knew their wives held the license and when they would call me for help I knew it was going to be a very elaborate job and needed me to help on how to approach it correctly.
Yes. A lot of folks confuse a contractors license with journeyman certification. I have both and can testify that there is no substitute for experience. A good tradesman fixes his mistakes.
This video just killed my DIY schluter install. I was doing these same penny tiles onto the schluter pan, not knowing or seeing the tile requirement for the shower pan. I called Schluter and verified the 2"x2" tile requirement/suggestion. Now I'm watching a thousand videos on mud base installs. Glad to find out now instead of after the fact. Saved my project from catastrophe by 1 day. Thanks Tile coach.

I'm going to the next schluter seminar and training I can. I'm okay with the kerdi and the waterproofing. I like it, but I am NOT okay with this install. I couldn't shower in that. It would trigger me bad in the AM.
There is no minimum tile size for the foam bases. The problem here was no thinset under the tile...that thinset base will do a good job of spreading out the weight. That said, I used 2x2 square tiles in my own Kerdi install.
I've probably written similar comments on at least 8 of Isaac's videos, but this guy isn't a tile coach...he's a life coach! Yes I did a total gut for shower pan and walls wasnt tiled yet the homeowner knew something was wrong there was 1/4 hardibacker over drywall for the walls the pan was a cheap plastic pan it sat like an 1/2inch of the floor so of course was flopping all over the place btw the guy was an excavator by trade that did tile on the side which I always hear people say I know how to do tile.

When he is in quarantine for COVID I’ve help him and it took 2 days to clean badly done grout job from a Carrara Marble. Btw he is not cheap.

Amazing channel and great video. Did my first tile job in a large shower and had to hire a tile setter to finish the kitchen (had another job start and couldn’t do the backsplash in time). The guy I hired has 16 years experience and said my shower tile work was almost or even just as good as his, all thanks to watching your channel and knowing what causes failures/common mistakes/setup and prep etc.

Seeing your channel for the first time. I'm a new subscriber and I'm a 36 year veteran of tile installation. In my 36 years I have never seen a shower install so bad. Do it right the first time. It will save time and money. Loved your video
I think all of us tile installers make mistakes from time to time and that's honestly what likely to have lead half of us here to this channel. Tile at a glance looks easy, however by working with it consistently you learn that this isn't easy. Especially as a young contractor you find out the hard way that when it comes to tile work and getting the correct finished product. If your not correct and plum level and square and if your not gentle or experienced at making cuts. Your bound to get tired after thinking you've already covered all your bases which has already worn you out to start with. Then moving forward to find that this wall or this floor or these joints are not going to square up no matter what angle I try and push them on, already jammed up halfway up the wall and you realize. This mistake will lead to one of two conclusions. Either you take everything down fix and most importantly replace all that tile which is now useless. Or you try and sneak in an inch here.....................and end up being off a mile on the other side of the room because you were too tired or so frustrated to admit to yourself or the customer saying " Look I made a mistake over here and the result is this small section of tile will need to be replaced. I will be happy to cover it for you on the back end of my pay. But I'm afraid at the moment I can't cover the cost. But you have my word I know now and exactly where my problem lies and how to fix it. So if you give me just one day's work to correct this mistake. You will be overjoyed that I've made this correction. As the end result will make for the most beautiful installation you could ever hoped for." I promise you that the customer would not be upset and if they are then they are just Dicks but no matter what you never let them see you sweat. Because when you do correct it. This will pay off big time In the long run. Because that Dick of a customer will have nothing but nice things to say as they walk into a flawless bathroom and enters the one good well off God fearing sweat woman or man they know to use the bathroom and asks "who did your shower and bathroom?" That one reference is all it takes because that God fearing sweat woman or man will hear the story of your honesty and loyalty to your work no matter what those dicks may think about you. Because the quality of your work stands out too well now. And once more your honesty and loyalty heard by this new customer that God has now thrown into your lap shows not just the quality of your work but, the quality of your character as well and she or he want's you to do their entire church for them and those church members want to welcome you to their homes and that's the kind of honest with ourselves we need. Combined with our faith in God to see us through when we uphold to gods will no matter how beaten or broken we have become or tired of sweaty and fed up with this stupid tile that just won't fit...No we relax ourselves take a deep breath and find the answers and then we thank God that the Tile coach had those answers in a short video that lead us to a new beginning in our lives ( and the customer is none the wiser don't watch UA-cam diy on a job). That we would of otherwise thrown away had we just given up and hope that this job pays and the mistakes slip by. Never lose hope and hold onto your faith in God and the rest will fall into place.

Your comments - twice - about not leaving space for condensation to build up - are invaluable! As is your comment about a licensed contractor. Knowledge is power! I started out earlier today watching Issac's 'how to' videos and was encouraged to build out two showers in the new house I'm building this year. Learning how to do it right made me confident. Then I continuted on watching a few of these fail videos, and I now have a lump in my throat. While I feel confident in being able to build the pan and walls and waterproof it all, I'm realizing that while that is critical, it is easier to learn. The REAL skill begins when it's time to set tile, especially with niches, curbs, and kneewalls. Getting everthing to line up, having a well-planned layout, have neat edges, straight grout lines, no lippage...oh man, that makes me nervous. But like Isaac says, no quality tilesetter will come in and set tile on someone else's substrate. So it seems to be all or nothing, either full DIY or full professional, start to finish. I've done backsplashes and 3-wall tub surrounds, but I'm realizing a full shower is a whole other thing. I am a long way off time-wise for the tilework, but I'll be watching many for videos and thinking long and hard before I commit to do it myself. So these videos are very valuable in that way as well. They also make it crystal clear that it's important to get references and if possible even see the work of prospective tilesetters. Even as a DIY guy, I could see how horrendous the quality of this work was.
I am a homeower and have been doing my own tile. Some parts have gone well...but my shower has been my nemesis. The builder cut some corners when when building it initially and i had to rip the whole thing out due to mold and much too late for any warrenty. I rebuilt it and tiled it. And it looked awful. Mistakes were made. So I was forced to tear it all down and start all over. Several Weeks of hard work down the drain and it wasnt like I didnt try to do a good job but you dont know what you dont know. So far the rebuild has gone much better. Thanks for all your tips. I will add one: in case you lay down your thinset too thick and have to scrape the joints before grouting, Dremel makes a bit that makes removing grout much easier.

4:15 this is gold!! A tile contractor that I know through family member was involved in a huge lawsuit after he installed tile on a roof top terrace. Well he didn't do the prep work and relied on the person before him to do the water proofing. Well long story short, the thing leaked and went into the house and ruined the interior. The homeowner sued everyone involved and this contractor ended up paying thousands of dollars in lawyer fees to clear up the situation and on experts to find the failure. This looks like a home depot day laborer special.

Personally, I tiled my tub surround and I used cheap 12x12 tiles. It doesn't look professional but it looks ok. I tried to do everything 110%, which means that with my errors, it's probably 90%. I live in a dry climate which helps. Anyway it seems to be holding up great. I wonder if this guy had used cheap tiles before, and then was hit with these expensive fancy tiles. If I cut those things, they would look like crap. I didn't have any L cuts though.

I finished my first bathroom a few weeks ago. For the exception that I don't have other than a angle-grinder to cut some of the tiles, it came out beautiful.
What does that have to do with anything shown here? Nothing.
As a home owner, I watched yours and bunch of other videos before attempting by bath remodel. I got the right materials and tools for the job. Some of things were easy, like installing the cement board and waterproofing with regard. Once that was done laying the tile was way more difficult, as in you know how to do it but you don't have enough practice or experience to get it right first time. ( Same like learning to drive a car, it takes much time spent behind the wheel to easily accelerate and merge while entering a highway, if u know what I mean). Unfortunately for DIYers the first project may be the last. As once you have a bath remodel or two, you have to tackle a different job. So even though you have everything from the right education ( like this video) to tools, materials, it will take more than one job to get it right. I did do my bath wall tiles, and I managed to address the coverage, by removing tiles a few min after install. But had a hard time getting the plumb right and avoid lippage. Had to struggle to remove couple of tiles next day as they were fully set (lippage), it was a lot of work to fix the imperfections to get it as close as a pro job Finally it turned out OK for the naked eye,, but if you take a level and look for imperfections, you will find them like a good tile Contractor would.

Terrible all contractors have to establish a policy a standard approach to get the best results .

I agree. I actually called Schluter and they said there is no minimum tile suggestion on Schluter pans. I specifically stated the penny mosaics and he said it would be fine. Only for Ditra is the under 2"x2" suggestion.
Love your tips I've been setting tile since I was about 12 yrs old with my dad back then their wasn't any wander or backer board so everything was floated over lath or plywood and felt I do remodeling so tile is just a small part and I've really got some useful tips from your post.Thank you !@

So to use penny tiles you need to float the kerdi pan. Do you mean to put a layer of mortar over the pan and let it dry then set the penny tiles? If so how thick of a mortar float

I've seen those, few times happened to me that I bit the job months prior, didn't got hired and.....you are guessing right, eventually I received the call back with sentence like "please help us, the contractor screwed up and your recommendation comes to the rescue. Just month ago client didn't even realized when she called that I was at the job site talking to them personally and giving them the estimate. It just show some people goes for the cheapest bit.

Sometimes going with the more expensive guy is the way to go lol just saying. I’ve taken the schluter classes and have been doing tile for over 15 years. I’m insured and have a reputable company in my town. Tile and water is not something to play around with or be cheap with. Do it right the first time and it could last a long time! And save you money down the road!

On the other hand, how do I the homeowner know, if a high priced tiler is worth what they charge? I am going to guess that most homeowners see a neighbor's new bath, and say "wow, that looks great, who did you use", without ever knowing whether it was a quality job or not. I have also had guys try to oversell the work they have to do, because just like Tile Coach says "If I don't do the prep, I can't guarantee the repair". That's why I started doing everything myself. Just because someone charges a lot doesn't mean they are any good.
Hey so idk when or if you see these messages anymore or not as this one is 2 yrs old. I’m redoing my 79 bathroom and had to put in a new tub n surround . I’m wanting to tile around the top and on my floor. .
I’ve had to build up around the frame . And then on the floor in front of the tub. I’m trying to figure out what to use to fill it n level it and then install large tiles on the floor. I planned on a self leveling compound and then red guard or schluter on the floor as my water barrier. But after listening to all your videos and others on here, no I don’t know what to use!!!

I'm mostly a DIY'er. Demolishing a bathroom currently and stunned by all the shody work I've uncovered. The only surprise is why it didn't leak on day one. I guess the rotten-out subfloor is testament that it had been leaking for a long time.

Sadly, I had a similar experience. Well, except for the cheap part... I had done all the prep work, using Schluter materials to the letter (stuff ain't cheap) and hired a friends "great tile guy" to set the tiles. Well, he was getting big for his britches, so he flipped the job to some mope without telling us he wasn't going to do it himself. Got home from work on day one and the first days tiles were set horribly. No spacing in some places, huge spacing in other places. Lots of lippage. I quite literally could have done better myself. Told that guy not to come back and demolished everything he did. I decided to "sleep on it" which was just stupid. I probably could have scraped the tiles off that evening and not had to redo all the wall board and schluter.
Cost me about $700 in the ruined tiles, wall board and Schluter I had to replace. Tiled the rest myself and it's still standing and water tight...
I own an old singlewide mobile home so, hiring stuff done just doesn't make financial sense. There was pretty much no way I could make my tub/shower worse than the original installers. Hopefully someday I'll own a real house, and if I need tile work, I'll hire a professional. After seeing their previous work with my own eyes.

Always supervise this type of work! There are literally 100s of videos showing the right way to install tiles. I'm on my third contractor installing bathroom and floor tiles. I've had to relace about 30% of the tiles so far!
Lol pay for licensed contractors with company trucks and a office space.
I think Schluter allows small format tiles on their new pans. I'm not 100% but I thought that is why they designed a new pan.
Yes that's correct, the only schluter product with size restrictions are ditra and ditra heat.
I had to tear out a full bath. The 30"x60" subway tiled shower was completely de-tiled in 10 min with a flat bar. The 2"x2" floor tile was pealed up by hand in less time. They use lines 1" apart of yellow wood glue on the floor tile. The install was one week old. It doesn't get any worse when you have to tear out to the studs and start over. At that point, they all are equally bad.

Edit: you can use a straight line tile cutters to do "L" shape cut outs. You just gotta no how :) gotta admit. Yanks are a bit behind aussie tilers. Taping up to caulk etc. Should make my own channel

The bathroom in my house I think is also put by the previous owners themselves. All tiles in my house are placed on dots. Grout starts falling out, tiles with cuts on both sides placed in the tiling,... Evertime I see it I get frustrated. Even without knowledge I don't see why you would place it on dots instead of having good coverage

Much respect for such a tactful and diplomatic overview of a bad tile installation. Instead of trash talking the contractor, you chose to be professional about it. The contractor was in over his head, and probably really wanted to do a good job, but just didn't have the knowledge or skills. (Or maybe they really just didn't give a f#$k.) Either way, lots to learn and sometimes it's gotta be the hard way.
Was the homeowner pissed when you told him all that stuff has to be ripped down to the bare studs?
I think the homeowner know that but try to find someone can save it with different option, but failed...
The problem with referrals over social media like nextdoor, is you have no idea who is giving the referral. Lots of times it is family, friends etc.... who have zero experience with the person doing actual work on their house, or wives who don't tell you it is their husband and are basically giving referrals when they really are just trying to get business. If you are asking for referrals, make sure you ask the person giving the referral how they are related to the person they are referring. Are they a customer, did they have actual work done by them or are they a friend or family etc...
For something like a shower, ask the contractor if you can drop by a current job and take a quick look, or at least see some pics of finished projects.
IMO, an all tiled shower, is the most complicated thing to build in the entire house and it takes real skills and experience not to mess it up and give you a top notch product. There are so many little details that must be done right. It is so easy to make little mistakes here and there.
This wasn't a contractor, it was the homeowner for sure.

Haha it’s funny because I’m a tile contractor but I work in restoration and customers work on things them selves and end up costing them way more money to fix the work they attempted. And I tell them whoever did this messed up your floors and they act like someone else did it but I feel lien it was them, who knowssss

You should see my bathroom. The contractor I hired did a bang up job. Lippages everywhere, doesnt even know how to do the corners and the installation was not levelled. I don't know what to do. I started removing the tiles he installed to see if I can work it out. And don't even ask me what he did with the vanity.

Did not know the 2x2 minimum rule. What are we supposed to do, calculate the area of individual river rocks on the floor? May look elsewhere for my waterproofing needs. Too much drama with Schluter/Kerdi.

Dang, what a bummer for the homeowner, along with the extra expense over the holidays. That said, least didn’t get completed & used as thats would have cost maybe more down the road from the issues.

Because it was very easy for people to look at that shower and start insulting the person that did the job and I’m sure it was easy for you to do that but you didn’t do that
A large tile like that needs absolutely level floors, and walls , not only level , but no bows or dips, etc. You need to " strike off" walls. This was common knowledge for every tile guy before even thinking about tiling. The fall of the unions and not paying proper wages has caused illegal work force , this has been going on like 40 years or so. Disrespecting the American craftsman ,, end of rant.. the results ....
Home owners don't often hire actual qualified tradesmen.

Big cost difference between unqualified labour at 10-20$/hour versus qualified at 40-80$/hour.
It's the same here in UK. Here it's because you dont need any qualification or anything to do it and too many people think it's easy and have a go. I worked with a bathroom fitter who believed that the adhesive was only there to hold the tiles on the wall ready for grout. He thought the grout was what 'held' everything together.
@@paulp.l.4869 I agree. I dont work for customers any more. I just buy rental units and remodel them. If I tell a customer I charge $40/ hour they go crazy. Keep in mind I can completely remodel a bathroom in like a week and give them option to install new plumbing while everything is open . So 40 hours at $40 would only be $1600 + their materials ,, a bargain if you ask me ..!!
Only very wealthy customers will pay me those rates, and I can't wait for just wealthy customers.
If you are a skilled craftsman , , invest in a quality area and do rentals or remodel and sell .. it been this way for like 30 years here in a lot of cities in America.. I am an immigrant myself ,, legal and always pay my taxes...
30 , 40 years ago you apprenticed for 2 years , and would go to trade school. You got paid well and had insurance,, now its just no rules ,, just depends on your ethnicity into which job you get hired on. Beleive me I saw what happened in the construction trades ...

You're right about buying to remodel and rent. It's great if you are handy, and have handy friends. That's what I've been doing since about I was 25.
I'm an electrician in Canada, tradesmen here get good insurance and pay.
I tell everyone that usually the cost of materials is very close to what it should cost you in time.
Even at 40$-50$ per hour, I'll be under the cost of materials.
I helped my friend estimate a job for his family... The cost of materials was 2700$ and time was at under 500$. The guy complained that "you charged cheaper for your hourly rate for your aunt".
My friend was very happy when he wasn't given the job.
He was going to get screwed. The potential customer called a few companies and found out the cost was between 5000$ and 10000$. Then he had the balls to ask for a price reduction because some items were cheaper from the companies who had wholesale prices... Ufft.
Anyway, if you got this far congratulations on your accomplishments. Sorry to hear about the race issues in hiring.
Here companies on government or bigger sites need quotas of minorities. They have a really hard time attracting any to hit the mark. It causes huge issues because one hired that person can't be fired, if not they get penalties and lose the contracts... Even if, really story here, the guy almost killed 2 people on my site. Once right in from of me, with a scissor lift he pushed a guy through a barricade. Lucky the victim held on to the kick plate. The drop would have been 150 feet...
Then the minority hire panicked ran away, leaving the guy hanging.
On another site his negligence, and failure to follow the rules as usual, caused a death.
My only issue with minorities and women (especially women) is that they don't need to go to trade school. They can skip the 1800 hours of trade school and magically get their cards to work. At the very least I'm fine with the ones who tell me they don't know and want to learn. Unfortunately this has been less than 10% of the ones I encounter.
The others randomly do stuff, pretend to know what they are doing, and cause problems for everyone.
The worse part is because the bosses know those people are "untouchable" they test them out, and when they fail to perform they give them the worse easy jobs.
This person I mentioned was given 8 months of "electrician" labor (that was the fair test) and then confined to just drilling holes where he was told to.
Most workers aren't very good. I'd say: 40% are trash, 20% can work but not alone, 20% can work alone but don't know why they do things, the last 20% are the all rounders that are reliable.
This is the result of the older workers who got in without any school, and weren't able to properly teach and mentor. Then add all the special cases that skip school and you lower the workforce quality.
One girl, on a hospital site I worked at, went from installing insulation and firestop to being an elevator mechanic over the weekend...
Huge pay increase.
Never went to school for either...
That's when she told me about the programs, and I verified if it was true. Sadly it was worse than I though... They received better conditions than everyone else.
1/3 off their salaries, up to 20k, was paid by other workers dues. So the employers would not suffer from the hires incompetence as much.
Oh and there was a loophole because that subsidy was available for up to 3 employers. The women would "switch companies" and employers barely paid the salaries.
They would stay on the sale work site, but in the books they were lent from other companies.
I'm always the one fixing the mistakes or doing the harder jobs.
I hate fixing mistakes that were entirely avoidable, and that a 1st year apprentice who came out of school wouldn't do. Especially when they were warned, told how to do it, but failed to follow instructions or inform others that they didn't know what to do.
You still get gems in the rough though. The best 50+ years old worker I met, in the quota companies, was a woman.
She came to me for information and guidance. She was sharp and learned quickly. She admitted to not have any gone to school, and always felt like something was missing. She was hungry for self improvement, which I couldn't ignore and helped her with code and more complex issues.
Anyways sorry for the rant... haha
I hear that in the states, like Canada, your pay and benefits are very relative to where you are. Moving for a while is an option.
Here you can earn between 70k to 180k depending on location. Working for oil, mining, and power plant construction is really lucrative.
That is if you don't mind being isolated and 12-14 hour work days.

Ome of the biggest problem we are facing here in Australia is that plenty of Indian and afghanian who work for low prices destroyed the market. Plenty of commericail buling companies now in melbourne they just wanna get the jobs face and cheap not caring whether it is a good job or nah. The price of tiling a wet area ( 2 bathrooms and a laundry and a small toilet is $1300 with Gst yea and the worker charges you at least 350 for one day and we all know no job is being done perfectly in one day. What i can tell is the way work is going in melbourne it won't last. The govermonet should do something about these companies about prices of houses about wadges. Employ trusted supervisors watching work and the way the hoise is being build. You know what sometimes i feel shamed cause the price house is 1500000000. 1 million 500 thousand in Australia and workers are getting paid 1500 and they have to finish it in 2 days max. And this worker can't even afford buying a house like the one he is working in every day. Bro like if i wanna talk about everything i see here it would blow your mind but i can tell you if government doesn't find solutions for all these troubles it will affect the economy and this will not gonna end good in the country favour. Don't trust the commericial building companies anymore i see their work and i work for them everyday. If you wanna build a hoise build it on your own and get professional to build it for you and don't be a greedy person just saving $50 but on the other hand you have to get another tiler to fix what yous have destroyed
After installing my own shower, I understand how hard a shower with multiple deviations can be. Bench, window niche.
That was entertaining. Long ago, I did tile and have seen much worse. The guys who made tons of money had a line : "Looks good from my house.". I never had a contractors license and had an excellent reputation, so much so that the head of the contractors board asked his unlicensed plumber to ask me to do his job, I refused. There are no tests for contractors on competency, it all has to do with paying the legalized extortion quarterly. Most of the contractors I knew their wives held the license and when they would call me for help I knew it was going to be a very elaborate job and needed me to help on how to approach it correctly.
Yes. A lot of folks confuse a contractors license with journeyman certification. I have both and can testify that there is no substitute for experience. A good tradesman fixes his mistakes.
