Why is it called an 'X-WING' when Star Wars uses AURABESH (not our Alphabet)?

- Have you ever wondered why it's called the X-Wing, if the latin alphabet isn't used in Star Wars, and Aurabesh is? We'll look at that and more on today's Star Wars lore video!

Similar shapes occur in many systems. In runic futhark, the x-shape is read as g, and p as w.
That explains a few things. Thanks!😃

Sasuri I see what you did there.
The Xesh-Wing does sound like a low budget rip off lol

Like those rip off kids toys you get made in China where the name _almost_ looks the same but not quite...

Ahh that's just Sean Connery's interpretation of it
Because “X-Wing” sounds cooler
YOU BET IT DOES!!!
X-Wing hey!
Looks > practicality
insert memorable username here reeeese
Xesh-Wing would make no sence because the letter xesh is a triangle. There is no letter that looks like an X-Wing in Aurebesh. However, the letter vev (v) looks like a Y, so the Y-Wing could be called Vev-Wing, what would make it a V-Wing if transcripted.
I think it makes sense that they use an ancient alphabet to name things, because as you say, it sounds cooler (to them).
I love knowing that Darth Sidious has his own Sith signature to sign those checks for his imperials 😂
That comes from the journal-like source books such as _The_ _Jedi_ _Path_ , _Book_ _of_ _the_ _Sith_ , _Imperial_ _Handbook_, and _The_ _Bounty_ _Hunter's_ _Code_ which had commentaries by a select few of the Star Wars characters. They are pretty fun reads and if you buy the package deal it comes with various objects and trophies that were mentioned in the book. There's a rebel version out too but unlike the other ones mentioned it uses solely New Canon persons and information and nothing related to Legends.
I thought his signature would be sheev palpatine
If only the Republic would have done a background check on that signature... smh

MageGrayWolf they still could and say he just goes by DJ & Don't Join
It sounds so much better.
I always assumed Star Wars was translated, so X-Wing's are called X-Wing's for the same reason that everyone (usually) speaks English.
Edit: Probably should have finished the video first lol.
To me, any scifi universe set either in a different place or far in the future would be translated from it’s standard language to whatever the viewer’s language is. Except for parts of foreign languages, which would remain the same or be subtitled. I think universes like Futurama are probably getting to the end of their language’s distinguishable lifetime, and I’m surprised they can even talk to Fry or the people of Roswell understandably. Oh, and I mean “standard” as whatever is most common at the time. For example, English is the standard language in this conversation. As those universes may actually have many spoken languages of very different types, all of about the same commonality or not a majority. Near universal languages seem weird.
@@madalheidis Computers, internet and schools is causing the English language to stagnate into a standard language with words only being added and no letters being added or remove. In old times languages use to change over generations because they were isolated enough that it takes days or weeks to get from one village to get to another village. Because off all 3, English will be the same for thousands of years with no deviation. This I expect what happen to Futurama and Fry only had to look at the dictionary to get updated on the new words.
@@Dragon6687 Or it will drastically change when future colonies try to distance themselves from us. Especially the colonies from non-english speaking countries.
Like a mix between Chinese and Indian. Colonies where Indian or Chinese are the languages to communicate between different society's.
The thing is, Humanity will change in the future.
People want to be part machine, gene editing or both.
-We surely get a purists uprising-
Because in the 1977 version of Star Wars the Alphabet was used, mainly in the Death Star Tractor Beam thing and Lucas(or whoever) hadn't invented the other Alphabet yet.
I don't think Lucas invented Aurabesh. I think it was a third party for a liscenced tabletop RPG who developed it.
He said that at the start of the video.
Because it's like my ex. Extremely evasive and pesky to deal with

Love all of your star wars lore videos. Been a huge fan of star wars since I was just a little kid.
I think most of us have been fans since we were little kids.
4:22 Rebels explains it. The prototype B-Wing was named the "Bladewing", so the production version simply uses an abbreviated version of the name.
🅱️e careful not to choke on you aspirations director

aurebesh isn't a language... it's an alphabet. galactic basic, which is written in aurebesh, is the lingua franca of the galaxy.
*yesh*
Mind: BLOWN
4:22 The B-Wing's prototype was referred to by the designer as the "Bladewing". "B-Wing" is simply a contraction of this original name.
Great video as always Eck!
The song in the beginning is resonance by HOME and during the video the song is my white daisy by De Lorra
I love videos like this. Small, seemingly insignificant things are always the most interesting imo
Thanks for answering a question I've been wondering about. I've always figured it was just a "because it's a movie and needs to relate to the audience" thing. Awesome of them to put an in universe reason for it.
Great video on a topic I didn’t even know I wanted covered. I think the name of the B-Wing was explained in Rebels as the first letter of its creator or something, but as for its naming in RotJ, because X-Wing was already taken
CC - 3802 Could’ve been called the T-Wing
Alex Day I suppose so, but really only if you’re talking about the lower case ‘t’
Cause the writers weren't fluent in aurabesh at the time lol. Great Video! Keep up the great work!
I don't think it even existed when the first movies was made. Wasn't one of the special edition changes going back and changing all the text?
It's nice to think they put this much thought to retroactively correcting their world-building...
Yo Eck have you ever tried using music from HOME's "Resting Place" album? (12 and 17 are awesome)
I've been wondering about this for years, thank you.
Interesting video keep up the good work and I didn't know the xwing name had an origin still it's pretty interesting I enjoy your videos @Eckhartsladder I always learn something new
The "B" in B-Wing stands for "Blade", due to the blade-like wings and original purpose as a blockade-breaker, "cutting" through blockades like a sword.
What the hell. I was just in the middle of a wookieepedia binge and after reading the V Wing article thought this exact question and then found only one article on how it's related to Higher Galactic Alphabet. Hell of a coincidence. Great video!
Great video! Have a wonderful day!
I always thought the simplest explanation was just that what we hear is just an adaptation into English of what the characters are actually saying - sort of like Tolkein's explanation of Westron and how Sam's actual name is Banazir, Merry's is Kalimac, etc.
Thing I find funny about aurabesh is in the original version of new hope they used the our alphabet on panels in the death star, they then changed it after aurabesh was created in later movies
About the b-wing
I'd say if the s foils are closed and it's standing up vertically, it's a lower case "b"
I would’ve never thought of this if you didn’t make a video about it
Always wondered about this
Edit: I never came across this info, even after reading *loads* of EU books.
NPC#10572 lol i hate that too
@@wlm1697 nah I just said thanks. You should see some other comments. But fine, to Humor you. I'll edit it, so you can rest easy.
I always assumed that X, Y, B, and A were the equivalent of shapes, so this is an interesting fact. The existence of High Galactic reminds me of the original ideas of the force, with the human from Earth being the originator of humanity and the force that I believe you brought up before in a video.
This video is incredible, more like this please!
Dear EL! Here are some ideas for future videos: 1. Yuuzhan-Vong theology, 2. They're releasing a new Star Wars book called "Alphabet Squadron" this June.
I read about it last night, and thought "Shouldn't that be "Aurebesh Squadron?""
I like how you seem to be able to amazingly answer questions that I never thought to ask in the first place. And then I wonder why I never asked it before.....hmmm. Anyways Bro Great Job!!
I really wished that there were a lot more Hyperspace articles still available or at the very least saved on forums or backlogged. I remember first finding out about the site when I found the main Star Wars website. There were also some mentions to it in _Insider_ pages and old Star Wars magazines particularly when the Prequels were being made.
Me too. It's a damn shame. Some of them are still available if you know where to look
Hahaha hadnt thought of it but this video clears up any possible confusion so perfect thanks eck
Like you said at the end, I thought the in-universe explanation was that it was describing the shape, ie. X-wing as in "crossed" wing, or Y-wing as in forked.
Half the reason I watch your videos is the outro. Still love the dog at the end.
High Galactic designations make sense especially for R2-D2 and C-3PO. R2-D2 was after all a state of the art Astromech Droid intended for high ranking officials and even royalty in which case a high class nomenclature is fitting. Anakin craving the same sort of prestige and likely seeing similar numerical designations on customized ships, vehicles, droids, etc, would likely apply the same convention when naming his Lrotocol Droid C-3PO. The secondary identifier ie Human Cyborg Relations was likely intended to sound official and important thus lending creedence to the High Galactic designation. One could hardly blame him for taking pride in his work.
The Ecks-Wing. Its like an x-wing, but looks slightly like a dog and has advanced tracking equipment along with an onboard database containing a vast wealth of information. Also, its cargo compartment always has at least one ladder in it (usually at least somewhat collapsable). Pilots of the Ecks-Wing have remarked about the strangely frequent occasions on which having a ladder saved their lives and to this day lobby that ladders of some form should be standard equipment for starfighters.
Thank you Eck, very cool
Hey! There's an explanation! I was wondering about this not too long ago
🤨 very good video. Interesting information. They Q very much. Thank you for letting us know more about the Star Wars universe. Look forward to your next video.
This topic has bothered me more than most anything else about Star Wars. It's nice that there is an explanation outside of "Lucas went power mad did a Rowlling retcon that just made things messier." Thanks Eck
Why do interdictor cruisers require 4 spheres? But the designs of Old Republic era ships with the technology seem to be missing this entirely?
On the same topic how did the technology seem to go missing for so long when it was such a tactically practical peice of tech? Revan used it but seems to be almost unknown till the clone wars again .
Finally a video explaining the alphabet of the starwars universe. Thank you so much
This is the content I subscribed for! 👍
julianzolo bold of you to assume I’m not a moronic nerd
you should cover what kind of training clone troopers and stormtroopers went through. especially what training stormtroopers did in case of finding a Jedi.
I have some questions which I think could be interesting videos, How many rebel factions were there, which planets in star wars were loyal to the empire, and what were some major battles in the galactic civil war that weren't in the movies
U really answer the questions i didn't even know that i wanted to know them
I love the end of video when you tease your dog. I used to do that to my dogs.
I was just asking about this in the X wing video that Resurrected Starships did. This always bugged me about as much as how starships always seem to be level when in space.
Because it's someone's X-girlfriend
X-boyfriend?
Real world example (maybe): In Japan, there are three writing systems: Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana. Kanji are imported Chinese symbols or pictures that represent words and sounds. Both hiragana and katakana are alphabets representing 46 different syllables, both represent the same sounds. Hiragana is used for Japanese words, and katakana represents words "borrowed" from other countries. (Instant Immersion Japanese Deluxe Edition Workbook, page 4) There is also a "translated-to-the-Roman-alphabet" called Romunji which makes it easier to pronounce in English.
"B-wing, what is even going on there" I'm dead! 😂
That is so interesting! I can read/write in Aurabesh but I never knew about this!
Why am I so interested in this? I am seriously watching this entire video....you weren’t planning a video and yet you roll out a 10 minute video on the SW alphabet.
julianzolo I could have saved 6 minutes if I just answered it myself. Still enjoyed it. Like taking the scenic route.
The B-Wing looks like a lowercase b if you view it from the side, upside down, with the S-foils closed or ignored.
Of course, the ship is normally turned on its side when the s-foils are closed, so you would actually see this from the top in that case.
The cockpit is the circular portion of the b, while the rest of the ship is the bar.
I have always thought about this nice one dude
Nice to see you cover this topic. The sheer amount of times I have had to explain the translation into Basic for us, and High Galactic is insane so this will be very helpful in not having to do it myself. One thing that I think really works about High Galactic is that we see this kind of thing IRl like with English being considered a commoners language, to take from this article www.thehistoryofenglish.com/history_middle.html
However, the peasantry and lower classes (the vast majority of the population, an estimated 95%) continued to speak English - considered by the Normans a low-class, vulgar tongue - and the two languages developed in parallel, only gradually merging as Normans and Anglo-Saxons began to intermarry. It is this mixture of Old English and Anglo-Norman that is usually referred to as Middle English."
It also reminds me of how we still use the Greek Alphabet and use Latin translations directly for college mottos and the naming of species. We even saw Greek become the go to in the Eastern Roman Empire after the rise of Christendom, we see major Romans from Cicero to Marcus Aurelius write in Greek. It honestly would be absurd if this was not the case in the GFFA.
Great work as always.
I can think of two possible "B" shapes on the B wing. If you exclude the vertical wings and squint really hard, you might be able to say it's a lower-case b. Alternatively if you omit the wings *entirely* then the remaining section could be interpreted as a "B". Still, it's a weak correlation compared to the other letter fighters. Maybe if it was two large engines on either side of a central cockpit and support pylon...
Notification squad! Plus! How do you think a Thrawn doctrin would work instead of the Tarkin doctrin if it existed? #askeck
Go fuck yourself squad!
I imagine a Thrawn doctrine would be something like "Stop making stupid things that are scary and start making stuff that actually works well. And get some computer officers while you are at it"
Although that's partly because the Tarkin Doctrine is a retcon and gets used to explain away every dumb thing about the Empire's military.
If there was a Thrawn Doctrine then there would be no Rebel Alliance and the Empire would rule the galaxy.
we gotta give u credit for putting in the end clip even though u wanted to sleep
The reason the B-wing was given its name was because that was the name it was given during the production of Return of the Jedi. In production, it and the A-wing were simply given the names "B" and "A" respectively. The names evidently stuck.
I would think that the b wing was named as such to be like hey it's our dedicated heavy bomber and the hb winc doesn't have a good ring to it but b wing does
I actually have the answer on why it's called the B-wing. Prototype was known as a "Blade Wing" (when the S-foils are folded in, it does resemble a blade somewhat) which given the naming conventions and all, reduced it to B-Wing. Along with some things (can't verify) saying that the prototypes designation was B6.
Blade wing however, I can confirm in current canon - Star Wars Rebel's, Season 2, Episode 7.
That center part (Engine part from the front) of the B-Wing looks a bit like the Aurabesh Symbol for Besh...
Nice video
Really refreshing seeing that footage from TLJ in this :)
DJ being called Dorn Jenth is my new headcanon
Don't know if you were kidding about not knowing the origin of the B-Wing name, but it grew from ILM calling the two new fighters for 6 A Fighter and B Fighter. A wing looking somewhat like an A was a coincidence. Also a lot of work on the B-Wing was put in by Bill George, so it was jokingly called the Bill-Wing Fighter (and Bill's Baby). There's a new canon explanation though, that I'm sure you know. For those who don't, it was originally the Blade-Wing, in-universe.
3:24
Just like the B-Wing!
Yeah blade wing I know.
Damn, you weren't kidding about the original Hyperspace article being hard to find. A lot of the old ones are backed up to the internet archive but it doesn't seem like the written word was and I can't find a copy anywhere.
Well the B-Wing's name derives from the B meaning blade, and blade because when the s-foils are locked down and you look at it from the side which resembles a blade scything in space.
Never thought about that, because in the original trilogy (where the X-wings get used the most) the other language(s) are almost never shown (in written form at least).
Love this content
I did notice that the letters for h and v are the Greek letter ξ (Ksi/Xi) and Latin letter Y respectively.
On your final note about translation convention... the X-wing could be called the cross-wing. The London railway station of King's Cross is often shortened to "King's X". Y-wing could be fork-wing.
... still no good explanation for B-wings though.
your looking at the b wing from the wrong angle
