    Regarding the Z-95 Headhunter. I wanted to keep this video to 6 ships to match the CIS one so I left it out. I'll probably circle back to that ship if/when I do a Rebel Alliance breakdown video.

      My only issue with it is the main cannons are too far apart to be much use outside of strafing runs on large targets. 12.5 meters long, the wing span is as long as if not longer than the length of the ACR-170. So at best a 12.2 meter gap between their mounts.

    Were the Z-95 and ARC-170 used at around the same time? Watching the Clone Wars, it seems like we only ever see one or the other, never both being used at once. The Z-95 is more of a dedicated fighter, as opposed to the ARC-170's heavier ordnance and bombing capabilities, so they definitely wouldn't be used exclusively apart from each other. Personally, I prefer the ARC-170. Looks way better, bigger guns.

      Z-95 should be a pre-clone wars non-hyper drive light fighter used in planetary defense. the ARC-170 was developed based on the Z-95 and incorporated more powerful shields and weapons and built as an assault bomber/fighter with a hyperdrive
      leaving the T-65 X-Wing to be a refinement of the two designs to create a more balanced all-round fighter/bomber

    I’ve always been of the opinion that the Z-95 was an early war ship, contemporary with the V-19, since it would seem to me that the Republic underestimated early on the importance of fleet battles (seeing the war as largely a matter of putting down Rebellions on planets they already dejure held, like geonosis) hence the V-19 was more an dual atmosphere (space+air) craft with Shuttle design influences than a out and out star fighter. In my view it’s job was to cut through a planets defense screen of star fighters once an Acclamator came out of hyperspace over an LZ, and then escort LAATs down to the surface. That requires the shuttle type design of the ship, and explains the lack of astromech & hyper drive. Then the Republic got into larger fleet battles, and its only options were to continue V-19 production, rush the Y Wing bomber into service, and buy up the already in production, commercially produced, Z-95s to fill the gap of fleet fighters. But then I never watched all of the Clone Wars series so they might contradict me, and I still think 3 years is too short a timeline for the war (its WW2 in space, and that irl lasted at least 4-5 years or more depending on who you ask).

    Hey, Daniel! Great video, as always! But as long as we are on the topic of Republic fighters: in the Clone Wars series - in "The Rise of Clovis" episode - Anakin could be seen holding a model of a starfighter that looks like wierd cross between Delta and Actis. Do you know anything about it?

    I don't know why the Empire replaced the V-wing with the TIE, as the V-wing, other than cost. It's basically better in every way, and certainly more cost effective if more expensive. It costs 100,000 credits to the TIE's 60,000, but one of the reasons TIEs were so cheap was because of mass production an militarization reducing costs. Besides, the extra 66% cost is well worth it for having shields, being more maneuverable and faster, and being better armed. Oh, and it also has an astromech droid. I think we all know 30 V-wings would win against 50 TIE fighters.

    • @scytheseven9173
      @scytheseven9173 6 років тому +1

      Those are advancements in overall technology, not ship design. The V-wing, which is still faster, is a much more sound design.

    • @scytheseven9173
      @scytheseven9173 6 років тому

      I'll give you that the TIE interceptor is a good ship, but the V-wing is much more versatile than the TIE fighter. Unlike the TIE, it has repulsorlift vanes and shields, making it much, much more suited for atmospheric combat. Its astromech droid can conduct repairs, unlike the TIE. Its better acceleration means it has a better thrust-to-mass ratio, giving it a maneuverability advantage, as both their engines are spaced around the same distance apart and away from the center of mass, giving them about equal leverage. The TIE's laser cannons may be better, but it only has two of them. The TIE pilot has a better field of view looking down, but his vision is much more restricted from every other direction. It also isn't fair to say that the TIE is easier to mod, as we don't really know how easy to specialize the V-wing was.

    • @scytheseven9173
      @scytheseven9173 6 років тому

      You're right about the anti gravity field; that does seem quite innovative, but not enough to make up for its shortcomings. Just because it can have shields does not make it better than a ship which is specially designed to have and in fact has dedicated heat sinks for its shields. As for the TIE's repair systems, I've found no evidence for them, they aren't in the cutaway, and the idea of them is completely contradictory to the Empire's design philosophy, which is to make them cheap, expendable, and near-suicidal. As for the TIE's computer, the V-wing also has onboard computers. The astrodroid aids the onboard computer, but doesn't replace it. The TIE manages to have much less internal space than a V-wing for things like computers, fuel, and power systems while having a similar target profile facing head on and a much worse one from the sides. As for the sensors and computational systems, there's no reason why they wouldn't work better on a refit V-wing (a V-wing II?). As for the the L-s9.3, it's on the TIE advanced, not the standard TIEs. The V-wing can turn faster than the TIE, physically speaking, because it has better acceleration and the engines give more leverage. The TIE's engines are pitifully close to the center of mass, meaning they give very little leverage. The V-wing isn't really any better on this, but its higher acceleration still edges out the TIE in maneuverability. Again, for a fair comparison you have to factor out differences in era technology, as there's no reason the Empire couldn't build a V-wing with better tech instead of a TIE. As for reasons to build the TIE, there are 3: It's cheaper, it costs less to maintain (engine with no moving parts), and it has an anti-gravity field in the cockpit. 40% cost reduction is a lot, but is it really worth the loss of shields, speed, and repair capabilities on almost every single fighter you have?

    • @scytheseven9173
      @scytheseven9173 6 років тому

      I get that it's technology is more advanced, but that's no excuse to make the design worse. With its poor engine placement, the only way a TIE could be a maneuverable as a V-wing is with gimbaling engines, and we know it doesn't have those because the beauty of the Twin Ion Engine itself is that it has no moving parts, making it reliable and easy to maintain. Again, the TIE has extremely limited space for internal systems; There's no way its repair capabilities extend beyond automatic fire extinguishers, with a wrench, duct tape, and prayer for the pilot. The engine (its design, not its placement) and anti-gravity cockpit are truly impressive on the TIE, but the rest of its design is quite awful. The shape maximizes the silhouette from most angles, but doesn't have the space for systems which usually comes with such a weakness. My guess is that the engine, while advanced, doesn't produce a lot of thrust, so they needed to reduce mass as much as possible to give it good acceleration. It's irrelevant to say it can have shields when it rarely does. I'm sure TIE pilots up against A-wings and X-wings will be happy to know that it _can_ have shields. As for their utility, the V-wing had the same designer and purpose as the A-wing, so a modern V-wing would likely have similar shields, enough to protect from glancing blows. It's not much, but it can mean a big difference in combat. The TIE is a poor successor to the V-wing, and a waste of advanced technology.

    • @scytheseven9173
      @scytheseven9173 6 років тому

      For speed you're absolutely wrong. Max speed in Star Wars is determined by relativistic shields, which prevent the effects of time dilation, not engine thrust, which would make precisely 0 sense. In Space, the only two things that matter for both speed and maneuverability are acceleration (thrust to mass) and engine placement (in the absence of rcs thrusters and gyroscopic stabilizers, which neither craft has). The V-wing's engines give it a maximum acceleration of 4800g to the TIE's 4100g, meaning the V-wing has more powerful engines relative to its mass. Ideally, engines used for rotation on any spaceship, given the absence of gimbaling, should be as far away from the center of mass as possible to maximize leverage. The TIE's engines, despite the ship being 6.4m wide, are both less than 1m from the center of mass; this is dreadful for maneuverability, and means that the TIE, given lesser acceleration, also has less torque for turning and is thus less maneuverable. As for armor, the TIEs have none. They literally don't have enough armor to stop a hand blaster from piercing the cockpit, much less two twin rapid fire light laser cannons. As for the radiators/solar panels, they are also unarmored and won't stop a thing, and damaging them, which is very easy to do, will unbalance the ship by shifting its center of mass, usually causing it to crash (though that tends to happen to TIEs anyway, regardless of whether they're damaged or not, though I blame the pilots and plot rather than the ship itself). As for the Battle of Yavin, you have to remember two things: these weren't normal TIEs, they were Darth Vader's personal escort and the Empire's best pilots, and the Empire also brought an entire freaking Death Star, bristling with guns. Now, the TIE advanced is a good fighter, but that doesn't make TIE/Lns suck any less. As for A-wings, they are faster, more maneuverable, and better armed than TIEs, if much more expensive, but that makes sense as, like the earlier V-wing by the same designer, they are interceptors. The X-wing is less maneuverable and slower, but it is much more durable, having a shield and astromech droid. It is better armed, with more laser cannons and proton torpedoes. It is more versatile, having a much, much longer mission duration, operational range, and being equipped with a hyperdrive. That being said, the TIE fighter, being closer to an interceptor than the X-wing's long range heavy fighter, is better in many situations, and I'd rather be in a TIE in a fight between the two. As for self-repair systems, I'm not saying they don't exist in some small form, but these thigs are not designed to come back from missions; that's Imperial design doctrine on fighters, which is why they don't have shields, in addition to saving on mass. The TIE simply has very little internal volume, which is great for mass but horrible for systems. The high surface area also gives them good heat properties, so at least they won't overheat, but this comes at the expense of a pretty crap target profile. As for its weapons, they are stronger than the V-wing's, but have a lower fire rate and are still mostly L-s1s, the Empire not being too keen on refitting their old ships. As for shields, it's better having them than not, which is why TIEs can have them and more advanced models do have them. I'm not saying that it's a horrible interceptor (it can shoot down Y-wings very well and isn't bad against X-wings either), but it's like the F-35 to the F-22: Multirole, cheaper, more versatile, and much, much worse in combat.

      With the hyperdrive ships, make non hyperdrive variants used for close support with a fleet that have the space for the hyperdrive taken up with extra shielding. Wouldn't need much reengineering (may even be capable of being an aftermarket modification or even swappable by ground crew/maintenance to vary the inventory and mission profile) and could confuse enemy fighters who wouldn't expect it to survive so many extra hits.
      Good for busy pitched battles with Venator support and planetary defense where they won't be jumping away.
      Especially useful for Y-Wings doing precision sub system attacks that have to charge enemy capital ships and endure point defense and screening ship fire.
      And confusing the enemy about the abilities of your ship by having several identical looking variants is useful, although knowing the Republic, they'd give each type a different paint job.
