The car turns on now, but it still won't start and the engine light is still on. I have never had any fuel issues, but the mechanic is saying he doesn't hear the fuel kicking in. That was when he replaced the crankshaft and still nothing.
If the engine light is on then there will be a diagnostic code that you can read from the OBD2 port that will tell you what the computer thinks is wrong with the car

Test the sensor as shown, then check that your camshaft is actually turning by looking in the hole where it went. The timing belt/chain may have gone or cam snapped.
my car wouldnt drive and rac said camshaft sensor, the car was taken to a garage he ran diagnostic test and said cam sensor fine and the timing chain has slipped he has told me he has not checked the timing chain but because the sensor is fine that it must be ?! any ideas?
jade hollyfield I would like to know how he tested that sensor and why he deduced it was ok. It may be a timing chain slip being sensed but as that job is expensive, personally I would like to have confirmation that it is not the sensor as that is easy to change. See how I tested the sensor.
No you can’t. The car won’t start unless it initially sees a correct signal from the cam sensor. Once it has started, then it is not needed as the ecu stays in sync with the crank sensor.
Thanks for that. Yes it seems on some engines (your Toyota example) the sync between cam and crank sensor is remembered inbetween engine turn offs. Or maybe the ECU is just guessing the sync in the absence of the cam signal, as there is just a choice of 1 out of 2 positions to choose from. That seems to fit with that video as some of the time it doesn’t start. Then try again and it does. On the MG, Rover, LANDROVER engines that are in my video it doesn’t do the same and definitely needs to see a cam signal in order to start. After that it doesn’t matter. Hence the ice trick to get some sort of signal from the sensor to start it as after it warms up the faulty cam sensor packed up but the engine kept going.
@@comeinhandynow what if the location of the sensor is behind the front passenger wheel well and not easily accessible like yours? Can u take a fuse in and out or reset another way?
The P0340 is the same as in my video and is camshaft sensor, so sounds like the same issue. Try and find the sensor and test it like in the video. From a quick search: OBD II fault code P0037 is defined as “Oxygen Sensor Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 2), and is set when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects a signal voltage from oxygen sensor #2 that does not fall within the predefined range for that sensor.
Hi mate it's me again would the coil pack do the same thing.on mine it would blow the 20 fuse saying engine management I've changed them now and it starts do I a new cam senor thanks
You'll only need a new cam sensor if you get a p0340 errror when read using an obdii reader (see my other video on those cheap elm327 based obdii readers)
I swapped cam sensor in a passat 1.8T 2001/2002. Still throwing the code, runs like shit when clearing codes until the CEL comes on again. What is the next step....? I'm not sure how to check all wiring...
I had code po340 so I replaced the camshaft position sensor but still didn’t start could it be I was an aftermarket one and not OEM also was told that a bad starter could also cause code po340 ?
I’d be very surprised if a bad starter motor would cause that error code. If the starter is bad it won’t turn over properly. Try and test the sensor with a multimeter like in the video and check the error codes again.
Have you measured the voltage from the sensor, as in the video, and confirmed that the sensor is not working? Maybe its out of position somehow, like too far away from the camshaft...
So maybe you can help me out - I believe the cam shaft sensor has gone bad on my 1997 pathfinder 3.3L. Problem I'm having is when I call auto parts stores to get one, no one even has one listed, they tell me they don't even have a part number for a cam shaft sensor and one fella told me there was a notation in his computer that they can't even order them. I've no idea what gives with that but I called a nissian dealer and they tell me that I can order one from them but there isn't one at any dealership in the entire state, the closest one is 2 states away. Any I missing something here about this part. I had no idea it was so "special", I've never had a problem getting any part for this car from part stores before, even sensors - everyone has the crankshaft position sensor but no one has the cam shaft sensor. The car began dying at idle once the weather heated up here this spring. This went on for about a week. It would start back up but sputter and have a hard time of things at about 2500 RPM through 4000 RPM then clear out and be fine. A week of this and one day it was dying under load at highway speeds every 1/2 a mile. It would start back up, then about the 9th time I had to let it sit and cool down before it would start, about the 15th time it just said "no" - had it towed home, it hasn't started since. Strong crank, new distributor, plugs, plug wires, battery. It's got spark, fuel, air, compression - all tested out fine, so I was told it was the cam sensor but I'll be smacked if I can find one. Then someone told me it's the same part # as the crankshaft sensor and basically the same unit but before I go sticking a part on that doesn't belong I'm trying to get so more information on this elusive part. Internet searches are a bust - 1000 of pages on crankshaft sensors, next to nothing on cam position sensors. Any help is GREATLY appreciated - I've been dealing with this mess for 15 days now and about at my wits end.
Any other engine codes? Has the 0340 cleared? Does the new sensor work ok like the tests in this video? If the new sensor looks ok then it must be some other problem.
@@comeinhandynow yes I finally got it fixed it was the ones under the valve covers I took it to a mechanic and finding out how easy it was to change I'm kicking myself lol
See this recent video of mine for confirmation of whether the sensor is actually working, ua-cam.com/video/kAOlPEnuTMw/v-deo.html I had a recent experience of a new crank sensor being worse than the old one. Also have a look in the timing belt cover to check that the camshafts are actually rotating. If none of that reveals the fault, then check the cam timing to check it hasn’t slipped due to a slack belt.. ua-cam.com/video/kAOlPEnuTMw/v-deo.html

That's a neat trick but tell me brother how many people ride around with a cooler full of ice to cool off a crank sensor LMAO! Also most of the time break downs don't usually break down near an ice machine either.
Most people here have some ice cubes in their freezer at home. Scenario that happened to me: car broke down, get a lift home and get spanner and some ice from freezer, go back to car and use spanner and ice to get it working and drive car home, then can wait for new camshaft sensor. If your not near home go to a shop for ice or a bag of frozen peas!
So i have a 2000 ford ranger that turned off suddenly and wouldnt start. Got a P0340 code so replaced the camshaft sensor. The starter is still trying but no luck. What do i do

I have a 2004 Chrysler sebring. I got a diagnostic and I was told the code was p0344. I had the camshaft sensor replaced, then had to replace the battery that same day and a few days later I got the crankshaft replaced as well.
Hey mate i have a 1999 mazda protege 323 trying to confirm if i have a cam or crank sensor or both problem. Any help greatly appreciated cheers
You need to read the error code from the OBDII port. See this video, hope it helps ua-cam.com/video/RnyXdxYaW2Y/v-deo.html
I got that code p0340 car takes time but starts and runs rough like the timing is off I just put this engine and when I connected the camshaft sensor connector to the sensor I messed bent the middle pin on the camshaft sensor replaced the sensor but still throwing that code.. did I mess the ecm?
I doubt that would mess up the ecm/ ecu.
carguy fastorslow any luck with resolving your issue?
So i change the camshaft sensor and still wont turn on.. I can take it out an Clean it like u did.. I mean can it be taking out or onece u put it in.. It cant b taken out
You can take it in and out at any time. Test it by measuring the sensor voltage like in the video.
I’ve changed my car sensor and still won’t start. What should I do next ?
Test the sensor as shown, then check that your camshaft is actually turning by looking in the hole where it went. The timing belt/chain may have gone or cam snapped.
So if my crank sensor reads 5v constantly. Even after being in ice for 10 minutes ? I assume that's thr sensor broken
If you are measuring the right wire and there is no change when touching it on and off a steel surface on the end, then yes
my car wouldnt drive and rac said camshaft sensor, the car was taken to a garage he ran diagnostic test and said cam sensor fine and the timing chain has slipped he has told me he has not checked the timing chain but because the sensor is fine that it must be ?! any ideas?
jade hollyfield I would like to know how he tested that sensor and why he deduced it was ok. It may be a timing chain slip being sensed but as that job is expensive, personally I would like to have confirmation that it is not the sensor as that is easy to change. See how I tested the sensor.
You can simply plug out the sensor and drive home as well. Not all folks will have ice on a whim
No you can’t. The car won’t start unless it initially sees a correct signal from the cam sensor. Once it has started, then it is not needed as the ecu stays in sync with the crank sensor.
@@comeinhandynow I will do it and upload the clip for you
Thanks for that.
@@FindShindoHere I don’t think so, best to just replace with a new one.
Hey mate, today I can not start my car, and it sounds like yours, it can be a problem as yours? I have Nissan Almera 1.5 72kw 2005.
It’s possible, but its best to try and read the error code from the OBDii port using a cheap (£15 ish) reader. See my other video on that.
We have made a diagnostic today, and it shows 0340 error and P0037 error code, do u know what it could be?
The P0340 is the same as in my video and is camshaft sensor, so sounds like the same issue. Try and find the sensor and test it like in the video.
From a quick search: OBD II fault code P0037 is defined as “Oxygen Sensor Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 2), and is set when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects a signal voltage from oxygen sensor #2 that does not fall within the predefined range for that sensor.
comeinhandynow Thanks u so much for your response, appreciate it! I will see what is with that car tomorrow.
2022 worked for me thanks
Great.
Brilliant thank you
Cheers!
Hi mate it's me again would the coil pack do the same thing.on mine it would blow the 20 fuse saying engine management I've changed them now and it starts do I a new cam senor thanks
You'll only need a new cam sensor if you get a p0340 errror when read using an obdii reader (see my other video on those cheap elm327 based obdii readers)
comeinhandynow thank you
I swapped cam sensor in a passat 1.8T 2001/2002.
Suppose you have no power going to the camshaft sensor can it be a fuse that’s bad
That would be possible, but also make sure that the ignition switch is on (dash lights on) before you test for voltages at the cam sensor.
My car ran tho code and I bought a new one and replaced it and it’s still not starting
You try testing the sensor as in the video to check the new one works.
0341 when I touch the cam wire 1/2 it fires fuel and spark
Thanks
the last 1month,my 2004 kia Sedona camshaft have been troubling me and have replaced it three times but problem still not solved
This story sounds like yours and has a solution! -

Had a P0340 code got a new sensor and the vehicle starts but still has loss of power and take a while to turn on
On a 06 G35
Any other engine codes? Has the 0340 cleared? Does the new sensor work ok like the tests in this video? If the new sensor looks ok then it must be some other problem.
Desxo Esco yea bought a sensor from infinity and that one fixed the problem
Well done.
Hi I'm having this problem I changed both now my car wont start at all
What error codes did you get? Got it working yet? Did you test the cam sensor like I show in the video?
@@comeinhandynow yes I finally got it fixed it was the ones under the valve covers I took it to a mechanic and finding out how easy it was to change I'm kicking myself lol
Oh well, better luck next time. We ‘live and learn’. At least you got it fixed.
Yea I know that's true but I could changed it for a quarter of the price but next time I know lol
@@mattl2477 what exactly did you get fixed...I changed to Cam and crank too and it still won't start...any advice please
if you dont have ice grab a stick and release some of your freon onto the sensor, better than walking.
Creative thinking.
Thank you, very well explained!!
Cheers
Because the wiring looks fine I did test for voltage and it tested good
You can also test the sensor like I did in the video, touching it on a piece of steel while measuring the output voltage (ignition on).
@@comeinhandynow thanks for replying
On mine 45 kv6 i change the sensor but still same situation i cant start car again, anybody have that problem also?
See this recent video of mine for confirmation of whether the sensor is actually working, ua-cam.com/video/kAOlPEnuTMw/v-deo.html
I had a recent experience of a new crank sensor being worse than the old one.
Also have a look in the timing belt cover to check that the camshafts are actually rotating. If none of that reveals the fault, then check the cam timing to check it hasn’t slipped due to a slack belt.. ua-cam.com/video/kAOlPEnuTMw/v-deo.html
@@comeinhandynow well actually at first i get first problem with crankshaft sensor the car will just turn off in midlle of driving, then i will restart fault with TOAF and car will turn on normally and i will continue driving till again same thing will happen. So i change crankshaft sensor and everything was fine maybe 20 days, then sudenly my car just turn off in middle of driving again, now i get this code like on ur video so i change camshaft sensor but still no help.I just notice one thing when i get this camshaft fault code and when i try to turn on ignition i heard some knocking sound down the jatco gearbox and then i clear the camshaft fault with TOAF this sound stop but still i cant turn on the car ...really strange
@@i_mgzr9038 I believe if the car stops while driving it must be the crankshaft sensor failing. A faulty cam sensor stops it on restarting not during driving. Maybe there are some poor crank sensor parts out there. As in the video, I fitted a Delphi one and all good. I would also recommend the digital scope for diagnosing with confidence, as in the video I posted earlier.
@comeinhandynow yes i understand but still on diagnostic i have only camshaft fault like on ur video
I prefer to try taking it out and use contact spray (outside the vehicle) with all sensors.
I guess the cooling effect from evaporative spray may also work as a temporary fix.
I changed camshaft ,crankshaft, coolant sensor and still crank but no start it all started with a misfire 3cylinder and I changed all spark plugs and all ignition coils and then the sensors I been working on this 2010 Hyundai Tucson for 5 wks keep buying parts changed the oil added coolant nothings working i'm checking fuses and then I don't know
See if there are any error codes in the ECU, see my video on a cheap OBDII error code reader and diagnosing car faults.
I took it to the shop got the Head Gasket and the water pump and the thermostat changed out runs like new now thanks for the reply
thank you for the tip
Cheers
But I’m Canada and it’s already cold lol but it still doesn’t wanna start
If the sensor fails the test I show then it’s time for a new sensor.
Mine will start gears want change it’s push to start
If the gears won’t change easily then it’s probably the clutch slave cylinder bracket come loose, see my video on fixing that.
@@comeinhandynow it’s in the transmission shop
I have a 2004 pacifica 3.5 replaced cam and crank sensor and still doesn't start
Try an engine error code scanner to diagnose the fault: ua-cam.com/video/RnyXdxYaW2Y/v-deo.html
Check your ground or replace the connector. That's a cheap fix before you take it to shop
Im gonna check if the timing is a tooth off
That is sometimes easy to do. Worth carefully checking.
If your not near home go to a shop for ice or a bag of frozen peas!
thank you !!!!
Cheers
He cleaned it with paper towels
And the point you are trying to make is what?.....
@@comeinhandynow did it work that's all I wanna know?
Yes
So i have a 2000 ford ranger that turned off suddenly and wouldnt start. Got a P0340 code so replaced the camshaft sensor. The starter is still trying but no luck. What do i do
Have you cleared the error code and then does the code reappear or do you have any other codes? You could try testing the sensor by measuring the voltage at the sensor that I show in the video.
