The power of oscilloscopes and people that know how to use them. Good job, Oz!
Just having fun with the scope. Thank you for watching
Great Video Oz! I wouldn’t have guessed those small ripples on the cam signal would have such an effect, but when you changed your time scale you can see it clear as day. Thanks for sharing!
Good job Oz. Really appreciate your videos. From experience 120 mV AC to 250 mV AC seems to be the max allowed ripple depending on manufacturers. Usually outside this range you'll get sensor related codes just like this beauty you diagnosed. Even if no codes occur it's good to test AC ripple when newer batteries are testing bad. AC voltage is bad on batteries.
Billy Yoder thanks brother. Yea I’ve been waiting to get something like this. I’ve read about them but haven’t messed with one that would mess with the cam.
Excellent work Oz, I have been chasing a cam sensor fault on a 2001 twin turbo Subaru Legacy. I swapped out the sensor, checked and double-checked the wiring and so on. I was getting to the end of what I could check! scoped everything and hey-presto NOISE! That alternator seemed fine, was putting out a good charge and all but was causing interference. Changed the Alternator and the vehicle runs beautifully. Thank you so much for your great video.
Awesome!!! Glad this video helped out. Thanks for watching
A man that actually knows what he's doing!!! WOW!!! Very impressive!
Thank you very much. Feel free to check out my newer videos to see more exciting diags
Found this video as I am tackling a stubborn P0335 Code on a 2010 Honda Civic Hybrid (not my first choice in a car but as a ride share free lancer; it is my bread and butter) Replaced cam sensor (New OEM) and it’s back six months after the repair. Ocasional abnormal idle. Rpm activity will act up while driving and shifting gears. Lurches every now and again while driving. I appreciate this thorough and informative video. I am still scratching my head on what could be causing this code but it looks like I found myself a good channel to subscribe to in the process. Video notifications are turned on. Great video!
Paradoxx thanks for stopping by and checking out the video and for subscribing as well. Have some new videos coming out soon
That was an awesome diagnosis, Azael! Great scope work too. Also thanks for the custom PHAD shot glass! :)
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics glad you like the shot glass
Very good information I’m in the middle of an electrical problem but I never thought about the alternator causing all those issues with the campshaft thanks a lot very good video👍🏼
Great video dude! This probably saved me from just running and buying the sensor that the codes are related to if they aren’t actually the problem
It's things like this that motivated me to buy a scope. Love the diagnostic strategy. Excellent work Oz 💪
I have a 2004 F150 with the code p0340. Changed both of the sensors and check engine light lights up after a while. When the truck is in parking, it feels like a rough idle but once i put it in drive, theres no rough idle. What do u think?
Dido on the scope fixing to get me one.
Nice diag work bro'
This one reminded me of a '94 Acura Vigor that would start misfiring around 2500 rpm. It was late in the evening, so I decided to bypass diag mode, & jump straight to iATN Fix Database mode, where I found one hit on this symptom, which turned out to be related to excessive diode ripple. So, I removed the connector from the regulator, & viola, symptom gone! New alternator fixed car.
Thanks for another great diag vid.

That was fantastic Oz!!! 😎💪👍 Way to prove it out. And the great thing is once completed you can verify the repair with confidence! Great lesson
Excelente diagnostico gracias x compartir sus conocimientos sobre la mecanica automotriz.
Gracias por mirar mi video :)
I had a similar issue with my 09 explorer 4.6,had a P0341 and it turned out it was the alternator problem, changed my alternator and the code disappeared buy itself .Thanks for your video bud
Great video, the right way to diagnose problems.
Great catch on that signal. True diagnostics at work!
Joe's Auto Electric thank you very much. Have a new video coming out soon that was a fun job
When I first started down this path of learning about diagnostics, I was attempting to find a way a DIY'er could bypass using a scope and use common methods (cheap). But as I learn, I have also realized having a scope is required, or, you take it to a good shop.
That is true. Scope just makes everything easier and clarifies the actual problem. Once I got my hands on one I was hooked
Wow! Excelente diagnóstico! Muy buena observación mi hermano, sin el scope le hubieran metido hasta agua bendita para tratar de arreglarlo.
Moving Up Auto Diagnostics 😂 😂
Thank you so much I have problems with my cam sensor didn't know what was going on until I watch this video and told my personal mechanic and everything worked out right thank you
Loved it , excellent presentation !
I’m having similar problem with my 94 3.1 liter Olds Ciera , gone through 13 cam position sensors , very frustrating, especially if that’s not the problem , same trouble code here
13 sensors? , your halfway there man, don't loose hope, don't give up on that one, you are never going to forget that one,
@@sargetester99 bahahahahhahaha
I replaced like 3. They last for like 6 months to a year. Always wonder why same code comes back.
Now how would anyone ever see this without a scope?! Beautiful video Oz ! Great diagnostic process all the way through
i was thinking the same question ...
without his searching scope wouldn't solve it at all , scope is a good tool when a good reference is available which is not always the case , which proves that the scope is just a fancy tool but it's not necessary at all to have
amr hamed so how then would you pursue a flex ray network failure due to signal attenuation? It's not a fancy tool at all. It's quite basic . And if used properly is one of the greatest in any diagnosticians arsenal. Are there other ways ? In most cases yes , but certainly not all. A decent scope is under 100 dollars. A snap on ratchet used is the same price. Remember that we do not have the luxury of just repeatedly fitting parts to see if it's the failure. We only have a few hours and that customer must have their vehicle back. Where are you from if I may ask?
amr hamed never mind . I see you like Scotty Killurwallet. And you also know now how to super clean an engine bay as well thanks to Chris.
BTW i have a pico scope but you already said what i am trying to say ( Are there other ways ? In most cases yes ) that's it
awesome troubleshooting, good mechanic!
bud prepper he’s technician cus he diagnosed it and confirmed what the actual problem was ;) a mechanic just replaces parts hoping it’ll fix it
Super good vid. Nice verification. Always love the vids!!
Had this problem with my mustang 12 years and no one had a clue what was wrong with it. I eventually found a clue on a crown vic forum and got the alternator rebuild. The guy thought I was crazy for thinking it would fix the cam sensor code
I liked your video tons more since minute 6 👍🏼
Thanks a lot buddy Grey Bidrio I love your videos which is Gracias amigo👀👍🌿
Spectacular video, Oz!!!
Awesome video!! I love you, I mean, this video so much! - your biggest fan
Linda Perryman ooooh really lil baby. I mean random subscriber
cool man! good job. I got a p0340 code on a Pacifica that will now not start...even after I replaced CPS. BUT!, you have given me another place to consider.
Did you fixed it ?
Well?
Great video my friend you rock. Sure helped me on my 97 GMC Sonoma same problem alternator
Sweeeeeet and glad this video helped out
Very nice video! I am newer to your channel but am very glad I subscribed. Thank you for your videos!
Nick hey thanks for joining in. Don’t forget to hit the bell to get the new video notification
It was the first thing I clicked after subscribing haha.
I done my timing chain on astra h, as soon as you suspected the alternator, a bell rang in my head and I dont remember plugging this little connector back in. :/
Wow . thanks bro, from I install a new alternator I been getting that p0340 code, I change the cam sensor two times still no change , so it is the altinator, 1998 lincoln navigator. Thanks a lot back to AutoZone I go
It might be something else that code is pretty vague. The proper way is to hook an oscilloscope to it
Hey Oz I have a 2005 Subaru Legacy gt i have a cam sensor circuit code and i changed them both changed the oxy sensors had new coils an sparks done an a month later i got the cam code but it runs fine but when i go to slow down it either dies or has a rough idle. Not all the time does it do this though it is random. Most of the time when i crank up it has a moment or two the idle sounds rough an some times when i put it in drive or reverse it acts up but its random though so no consistent. Would that be the wiring harness to the sensors? being its a Subaru not the best wiring. Or would it be something else cause its not feeling a running like a bad cam sensor thank you for your time!!
You would be vey hard pressed to find that without a scope. Fantastic work Azael
Yea that would have been a wild guess there. Hey thanks for stopping by
Very informative!
Thanks for that great information!!!
Thanks bro life saver.. I got the same problem whit this code tomorrow I’m check the alternator signal and camshaft signal too new subcriptor
You did your readiing on tools u use way to go 👍🙌👏
Great diagnostic and shows why electronic problems can be tricky. I hope those who don't wrench on their cars appreciate why the mechanics they pay can't always solve every issue on a 1st pass. It appears the alternator output noise coupled into the analog ground of the engine controller (needs more filters), and also that perhaps Ford chose a too-low threshold for the VR signal from the camshaft sensor. Perhaps purposeful so it would still work as the sensor magnet aged or if installation distance was off, but also makes it touchy to any noise in the signal or controller.
I'm betting any noise is irrelevant.
@@darishopkins2573 No need to bet since he proved the alternator was the noise source. He disabled the alternator so the engine then ran off battery alone and the camshaft sensor signal became very clean. He also researched the problem for this specific model and found where others cured the sensor code issue by swapping in a rebuilt alternator. The camshaft sensor error code then disappeared, proving that the noise was the problem (thus was very relevant).
Hi there Oz I have that problem with my 2004 nissan pathfinder I changed twice my camshaft sensor bank 2 cause I don't have that equipment that you have, so you think maybe is my alternator?
Good stuff man, wish you were my mechanic
I have an 03 neon that dies when driving. Have codes for cam and crank sensors. Replaced them both and took timing cover off to check it. The timing looked good but I put in a new belt since I had that off. There has been no change it still does the same thing. Is there a way I can test the food of the alternator without the scanner?
Hello My friend, excellent diagnostic.
Hi OZ I have a 2006 dodge caravan and I have an issue with it I got an engine light on and it started to run rough tough to start and jerking at roughly 2500 rpm diagnosed both sensors and wires there perfectly fine can the alternator cause this ?
Wow great video thank you. I want a fancy scanner now!
I also think that my transmission Governor solenoid sensor needs to be replaced as well because it won't shift into gear 3. Out here in Atlanta Georgia it seems like people at mechanic shops don't want to help me so I'm thinking of buying some tools and fixing the problem myself
Thank you! I really hope this will help me
Good catch, great video
alternator noise feeding through the entire power lines. Nice. The should put filters on cam sensor. nice video

Good Morning 🙏 🌄
From Nick Ayivor from London England UK 🇬🇧
I have this code on a 2012 Chrysler 200 I just picked up cheap. Has new cam and crank sensors and a new connector in the back. Connector tests 5v on one side and minimal on the other. Before the charred connector was changed it was reversed minimal on the othet one and 5v on the one now reading low if that makes sense. Could it be the alternator?
Is there a way to diagnose this without an expensive scan tool? I've just got a fluke meter and a cheap Innova scan tool that doesn't graph.
I understand the video very well. But I have the same cold going off on my 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L. And i don't know if it's just that needs to be replaced or is it just my distributor not screw down all the way that's causing the real problem
I'm having this problem right now on a ranger. I don't have the fancy tools and would not have found this. Thanks. I wonder, however, batteries are capacitors that are used to clean up noise on dc. Shouldn't the battery have cleaned up this problem? I wonder if there is more that is wrong here. Thanks.
That was great , my cam pos sensor is barely a year old. The body that the sensor rides on was changed about a year and a half ago. That damn p0340 pops up every month or so, truck runs good so I don’t think that it’s sensor. It’s gotta be the alt. Thank You for the Video.
so was it the alt ?
Does the camshaft position sensor brand matters, such as Dorman brand?
Very well done. I wish your shop was closer
Heloo Oz..this is pretty awesome. i am using a Lexus RX300 v6 engine and i had both my Camshaft sensors changed including the Crankshaft sensor. Both the Camshaft sensors responded positively except the Crankshaft sensors which failed to reset. The code keeps on coming back. i also have this Whinnying sound which all along i have been thinking it comes from the Power Steering Pump. Any advice?
I got a 2000 Cadillac Deville DHS it has several codes and im now wondering if it all related to my alternator....putting out to much voltage??? Great video... got the 0340 and couple other electrical issues, hmmmmmm
I have a 2004 Nissan Frontier 4x4 3.3L V6. It all of the sudden would just not start. It threw the P0340 Code so naturally I had the County mechanic replace the distributor because that is where the Cam position sensor is; well, it still didn't fire after that. I saw another video that said this code could also be caused by the Crank position sensor, so i ordered one of those and it hasn't arrived yet. I also ordered a knock sensor because I also got that code a while back when I was having misfires and needed to replace spark plug 6. It is winter here in Northern MN and my truck is a long ways away from civilization parked in the snow. I really need some help with this one.
Great video man good job
2003 Honda Accord 4cyl.
I got a check engine light P0341 that i need to clear.
It sounds like a lawnmower when i start it and the RPM drops and dies out.
I changed the spark plugs and coils with new ones and
It cleared the 4 codes it had that were P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304
HELP?
Check engine came on and code P0340 cam position sensor. I replaced and check engine light still on. So I did another scan and code P0340 was coming up, suggesting that I check the plug of the sensor. It looked good. Watching your video alternator will be checked. Thanks for the info.
Did it work?
Did it work for you
Great video man✌️✌️
Could this be the same issue on my 5.4 e-350 econoline??
Had this problem with my 1984 Camaro. The choke light would flicker and the key buzzer would partially come on at certain speeds. It was the diode trio in the alternator had lost one diode function. Ac feedback caused the choke light to flicker. 7 dollar part.
Great video sir !
Great info my guy!
Can it prevent the car from starting at all with this fault in the altenator, where you have P0340 present?
How are you able to see the cam signal ? I’m using the zeus and have to use 20v scale with 500ms time base
Is the p0010 code for 2015 Hyundai Sonata sport 2.4L GDI problem really is what the scanner says it is or the problem somewhere else? also where exactly is the cam position intake solenoid located because where everyone is showing it’s not there on my vehicle. Let me know please
really great video...thank you
Basics that’s for watching. Glad you liked the video
Great Video Bro..
Thanks for watching
Nicely done my dude!
Thanks for watching
Could you please make a video of replace camshaft position sensor of Ford transit 250? Thank you.
What have you disconnected at the alternator side precisely? I wasn't able to see clearly on the video. Thanks.
Oh cool. Alternator fits my other codes. I do miss having access to stuff like mitchel online and tech line along with the dealer tsb’s
Hello sir I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra it has a code P0016 it’s reading a camshaft correlation Bank 1 sensor A
So I replace it and it’s still doing the same it starts rough and stalls
When it warms up it runs a lot better any idea what I have to look for or do
Could a bad alternator with a po340 code cause no start for any reason?
You do nice work.. Other sites have accused the alternator..You explanied and proved it Thanks.
Thank you very much. It’s nice to know you appreciate my video
nicely done!
I got a question. I just replaced my cam sensor (bank 1) on my Nissan Pathfinder 05 and the code is still coming up. What possibilities do you think it could be? Connector? Wiring? Defective part or maybe something else? Because my car starts fine and runs, just bugging that I can't find the root problem. Thanks for the video, gave me more insight!
Added information... the Radio suppression capacitors are found on the front of the engine. Those capacitors aren't for the "radio." Capacitors filter out noise just like what you saw on your scope. In other words they filter out radio frequency noise (RF noise). You might have fixed it with the alternator but I believe the better fix was with the capacitor... it only costs $8. Soon the new alternator might cause the same problem and you'll be in the same problem. Excellent video but go further just like you said and don't throw parts at your car. In fact might be able to clean the connections on the capacitor and it'll be free.
Does my 2014 Ford mustang v6 3.7 have capacitors?
@@florenbaron7111 There's a good chance it does but often they are called something else. Noise filter, DC filter, Noise Reducer, etc. Inside it's usually just a capacitor.
Thanks for that tip !!!
You think this would apply to a 2006 5.7 hemi on a 300c Chrysler? I’m having this issue, car starts right away when cold but when warmed up it struggles to turn on
Great video. Just subscribed. That’s the way to diagnose.
Feel free to watch my other cam and crank sensor videos and don’t forget to smash that bell to receive all the notifications on my new videos

LOVE IT!
Jack got to love that nice and good stuffffff
@@OzMechanics I appreciate nice and good. Nice and good is so much better than nasty and bad. Who among us has an argument with nice and good? Let those who do walk around the block a few more times. Be that as it may, instead of, "How to fix code P0340", I would suggest, "One way to fix code P0340." Your fix, while very nice and good, may not fix all instances of P0340. My neighbor just came into possession of a 2001 BMW 525i that is throwing a P0340 DTC. I need to get a scope like you have to probe the situation. I will keep you updated.
@@7jack7 fixed?
@@karyl-lynndesrosiers7599 The car had a few other issues besides the P0340 code. My neighbor took it to the local German car shop that has a good rep, Siegfrid's. My neighbor said a new sensor fixed the P0340 code problem. The car ran beautifully he claims, even when it was throwing the code.
@@7jack7 Done that, twice. Once OTC, second time, OEM. No go, chasing wires as I text. Thank for answering.
Will this also cause a high pitch whine like a super charger on my radio
You might of just solved my issues. I have a 06 3v gt with a p0340 code and before the code popped I had a check charging system light pop and go away and my alternator whines at high RPM and car surges
Need help my cam sensor code will not go off I have change it twice Autozone first then O'Reilly's still want go off it is my Alternator?
this video is awesome!!! i have been having an issue with my 99 tahoe. keep sending it to NTB and these yahoos cant figure it out. would this process work on a 1999 chevy tahoe 2wd?
Yes. With a skilled tech behind the scope.
The money light 😂
Man, bro i have a 09 Pontiac g6 , its throwing the cam position sensor . I changed the sensor , the car still acting up. The car runs fine but check engine light is on , what should I do ??? Please help!!!!!
Did u get it fixed?
Good info!
I have 06 fusion 2.3l that is throwing a p0340 cam sensor code and had another cam sensor laying around so I swapped it and code still comes on. When driving it bogs down and won’t accelerate over 15 mph. Alternator don’t have a whine to it, could it still be an alternator??
Tyler Dixon would have to look at it with a scope. To see what the signal wire is doing on your crank sensor. Other than that it’s only a guessing game
Bro I got an 05 Sunfire. I've got ignition coil, module, crank shaft position sensor, and spark plugs replaced. I still got a check engine light on but it runs better. It was shaking really bad. It throws a cam shaft code but when I go to get the part its like it don't exist. I'm so confused and angry. What do I need to do .
Well, I didn’t expect those results.
I'm having this same code in my expedition. Took to Autozone pulled codes. Had the position senor fault P0340 Said replace alternator, with the cam sensor faults. Will find out more Monday when I have my Tech look at it
