- HOW TO TEST CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR ON A CAR
If you need to test camshaft sensor on your car because you have engine light on and code that relates to camshaft sensor we will explain how to do that. This video will work on many modern cars and the procedure may apply but not to all cars and testing camshaft sensor. We demonstrated how you can simply test camshaft sensor in just a few seconds. In some cases you may be able to test camshaft sensor without computer and all you will need is voltmeter. Hopefully the video will be helpful and you will be able to test your camshaft sensor. The procedure may work for intake camshaft position sensor and exhaust camshaft position sensor.

I did that test on the camshaft position sensor. When I put the pins in I got a reading of less than one and the weird thing is, when I tapped the sensor with a wrench, the reading would go up to 4.65 . It's a Chevrolet Malibu 2015, 2.5. I get a code P0016 on it.
I really appreciate your videos I've learned a lot I like the other channel too it is awesome keep doing what you're doing I really appreciate everything
Hello just seen this video my check engine light came on with code p0011 for a 200 Jetta 2.5 it said intake camshaft sensor I did what you explained and when I put the socket extension it did not change what does that mean
That was by far the most straight forward explanation I've seen yet, thank you!
Thanks for your help. I tested the crank position sensor on my daughter’s car with the help of this video. It ended up being faulty. Swapped it out. It cranked right over.
I just wanted to stop by for a sec and say thanks. Your videos have been a huge aid in diagnosing my Chevy Cruze. I think I'm looking at changing the VVT camshaft gears in my 1.8L. But I wanna check all my sensors and stuff before I dig into the internal timing components. Your videos are easy to understand and provide great info!! Thank you!!
Signal wires run to the ecu, ecu wires always have the stripe. Hope that helps someone.
Thanks kindly, just about to embark on this!
Thank you. That info is very helpful when troubleshooting and are not a mechanic
Very much
Need help
Thanks
You guys (ha) are the first channel I have come across who has shown a live test... My FSM had me testing every circuit and connector in the freaking car just to find out what one five minute test would tell me. You guys are awesome, thanks!
Bloody marvellous , this saved me a 'fortune' with auto electricians . So happy, thanks so much from Australia.
I was gettig no change one crank sensor and cam sensor only goes down to 1.5-2v. Ordered both. Thanks!!!
The best Camshaft test bro, thanks a lot, very simple and effective, You won a like and a new subscriptor,
An excellent video, I watch 4 other vidoes before this one. In my opinion the easiest to understand, straight to the method of how to test the camshaft sensor, what it does and what to measure.
Excellent, very clear and excellent methodology that tests both sensor and wiring. Thank you!
Now that's what I wanted to see. I have an intermittent signal on my ford and I was looking for a video that uses a multimeter to test it. Well done, guys :b
im hunting down a 2177 and 2178 on a mazda cx7. this video and all your other videos are very helpful so Im not buying multiple wrong parts. thanks for all you do.
This guy knows his stuff and shows you how to test the CPS at the end with a simple Volt Ohm Meter... Basically a CPS Test for Dummy's! Just AWESOME! Thank YOU!
DUH..it's only a simple hall effect switch...no mystery!!!
@@mikesecondo2254Bet you were the same way before you learned all about it - ha
Awesome thanks man , you help us weekend non qualified mechanics get so much done 👍
Same connections and procedure for a CKP?
I will never do this but I learned smth new today. Thank you.
Thanks for your video. It is probably one of the best videos for diy car maintenance.🎉
Brilliant video! Thank you so much
Thank you somuch . Appreciated your dedication .
Absolutely love this channel 👍
Great instructions for how to test the sensor. Does procedures applied to the crank sensor also ? Thanks
THANK YOU 😀👍
great work
ive seen in other videos that they disconnect negative battery cable first before removing sensor...is that just for safety or is there a reason. behind it? thanks in advance
The best explanation ive ever hear. Better than my trainor back in the days hehe
I have a 2017 Elantra and have recently found your videos. You guys are absolutely the best on explaining everything clearly and also explaining the why. Your camera work is also excellent. I replaced my crankshaft sensor and the Camshaft sensor is next. I don't think I could've done it as easily if it was someone else's videos. I have a 1.3 parasitic draw x 3 years I can't find except I found it's coming from positive battery fuse which could be anything. Do you have a video that can help me find it? You guys are the best!!! ❤❤❤
Great piece of knowledge....Thank You
Video starts at 1:38
Great video! Very clearly describes how to check camshaft position sensor. My questions is what do you do is the power wire and the signal wire are both registering 5.05 volts with the ignition switch on? Obviously there is an issue with power wire. How do I trace it down? Started picking because getting P0017 code on 2005 XC70. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!
I did test it by passing a socket under the CP sensor and no change in the output so assuming the CPS is bad. My main question is if the 5V to both the power and signal side is normal in a Volvo XC70?
Well that sure is an excellent, but simple explanation/ instructional video. Thank you, off to test mine now! Great job y'all!
500k views and only 5.5k likes!? Great video thanks!
These guy are always helpful I've learned a lot about my kia
What is a likely cause of no signal wire power to the sensor?
Rodent eating wires or connection.
im fan of you bro im seeing your so many videos bro very nice explaining
I would always connect your black lead to a ground that is preferably not on the connector (until you know which wire is which). It would suck if you sent 12 volts somewhere it shouldn’t go.
What do you mean by this? Like put it on the negative if the battery?
@@sarahkline389or on the bare metal
Your the best mecanic like your tips crystal clear as always thanks
Absolutely brilliant gentlemen, this has helped me out loads,to fix my mates 2002 x trail t30.
Very very helpful..I learn a lot ..thank you so much
I love watching your videos. You are amazing!
Love how u guys have Ur racing suits on.
This video was easy to follow. Thank you!
Good test on the sensor, I've never seen that before
Good job and thanks for sharing, can you please show the 2 wire test for camry 2000 4 cylinder 2.2 ???
Perfectly 👌. Going to try it. Thanks
You guys are the best you explained it so well
Hey bud thanks for the video, it is very useful and informative! I tried to test my sensor yesterday. It shows 5.07v, when I use the metal for testing the tip of the sensor it shows 0.28, is it normal? Please advise with many thanks
I love you man! Thanks!
Great explanation thank you!!
Thank you for sharing this knowledge.
Fantastic job 👏🏾👏🏾
This channel is very underrated!!!! Love this channel
Very good explain thank you sir
Thanx very simple and straight forward
Great vid guys!
Best videos are the best 👌 👍
Hello, thx for the vid. Do you have a link to your other channel about electtrical car repairs? And is it the same procedure for the crankshaftposition sensor? I have a daihatsu Sirion with a 2-wire crankshaft position sensor. And can i test the 2 wire crankshaftsensor harness, maybe with a continuity test?. Regards
Excelent video brother, how do i do it on two pin camshaft sensor? Thank you in advance!
Thank you. Is this the same for two wire cam sensor.
Brilliant video thanks 🙏
Great Video!
Wow, thanks for sharing this also is it true that if you have a crank no start engine and your RPM gauge doesn't work. Does that mean you're CPS sensor is bad? I just put a new CPS sensor in my VR6 engine and I have a crank no start and the RPM gauge doesn't work either. Should I buy a new sensor because this one is broken that's new?
A new drinking game , every time he says guys take a drink! JK he does explain a lot.
im ignoring this on account he's just possibly saved my car from the scrappers 😂
so thanks
@@logohigh1 he has been a big help for me as well.
Pretty good video, hats off to you.
Hey thanks for the video I got a lot of information out of it but I was wondering if this would work for a Lamborghini I have two of them. I have an 88.5 Countach special edition and an 05 special edition Gallardo. So I needed to do a tune-up on the Gallardo and when I was changing my spark plugs I was pulling up on the coil pack harnesses and pulled a little too hard and the plastic around the camshaft sensor pigtail connector completely disintegrated but the wires are still there and just hanging so I don't know what pin position they go into the new pigtail connector so I was wondering if this method of checking to see which wires are pulse and constant and ground would be the same procedure. Well hopefully you'll read this and great video I subscribed you have a fan
If both sensors test good on a honda crv, is the next step to check timing chain for stretch?
I'd like some more info on why the metal object takes the voltage away?
I mean, they sit next to or on an engine block so why does it zero out?
Thank you very helpful
Can you please tell me how to check the variable valve solenoid and the connectors or do a video on it ?
when I do the test you describe, I pass the metal in front of the sensor but the 5.0volts doesn't drop to zero, it doesn't change at all?
you almost make it sound so simple. thank you for your insight.
I have a P340 engine code for camshaft position sensor low voltage. I replaced the sensor but made no difference. Looks like the issue with the signal wire from the ECU. I hope this video will help me diagnose my 03 Civic issue. The problem I am having are engine stalling mostly at highway speed but also at low speed and coasting and sometimes when the engine is hot and also when park an inclined surface. I replaced the fuel pump, but the issue still presist.
Wow very educational
So you dont have to change both when you get the error code for camshaft sensor?
Hello when i put the conector in the sensor i have 4.97 volts and if i take a socket on it i drops to 0.30 volts is that sensor faulty or is it good ?
Thank you so much for yet another great and very helpful video! You guys rock! Thanks again, David
Most helpfully videos
best vid on testing the sensor, but my Chev Colorado 2011 uses a connector which does not provide access while sensor is connected. So sadly no way to verify the reading drop...
My camshaft position sensor drops to 0.11 volts when testing it. Is that a good enough reading or does it have to be replaced?
Dude I've got some weird stuff going on. I have 4 cam actuators solenoids, 3 of them are delivering 12 volts The other one has no voltage. Any info much appreciated
Thank God for u folks.
Thanks great explanation
I make the same test with a new camshaft. And when i conect the camshat it goes from 4.8 to 0.02 volts... is the camshaft bad? Because is "New"... thanks for the help..
An amazing video
I would really appreciate your video clip,,,, Otherwise, I almost replaced 4 of this sensors on my 06 MB R-350 gasoline engine without any knowledge. Wish you have more video on this car for those who do DIY on car.. Thanks again.
Driving x trail t30 currently i am guessing this sensor is gone its 18 years old camshaft sensor had crankshaft sensor replacemen like 7 years ago but what happens now is my car has insanely rough idle big cranks when cold but when hold it cranks long and cant keep rpms until i rev it .... randomly dies while revving and driving my engine completely shuts off and after that crank takes like 10 times for 5-10 sec till it starts am i right to guess this is the issue ? PCV Valve was stuck cleaned ... New Spark Plugs Headgasket checked no leak New My coils are absolutely noew had to replace them along my Valve Cover because gasked wouldnt do the job it was melted am i right in my guesss ? Also my fuel consumption got up ..
very good job
Thanks 👍👍👍😊
I don't have 12 v going into my cam position sensor only 1v
But I do have 5v on signal wire.
Why would that be? Does the v come straight from the battery or from the computer.
I have a MK4 Ford Mondeo turbo diesel.
Wow you guys make it sound so simple and easy. Thanks heaps
DUH...it's only a simple hall effect switch..no mystery!!!
Thank you for sharing
I backprobed the connector and got 4.93V across the ground and signal wire. But when I plugged the camshaft sensor into the connector the voltage dropped to 0.26V. I made sure the sensor was not near any metal and this happened both when the car was running and not running. What would cause the voltage drop?
Cómo sabes que te está fallando ese sensor?? Acaso el carro no prende? Yo tengo el código P0340 ya le cambié el sensor...el carro prende tiene fuerza....pero lo que noto es que huele a gasolina ....que podría ser? Buen video gracias
THANK YOU .VERY MUCH,VERY MUCH HELP FULL
Great video, but what do I do if the connector is GM, aka points so small I can’t get the voltmeter in to check?
Paperclips. Or smaller wire.
How to know camshaft position sensor is weak
Any link of p0012 with camshaft sensor hybrid prius
also you have a new subscriber in me!
Hi , love ur vids , can u help me out i have gmc holden 3.6 motor with code p0008 ,car runs fine but code keeps coming up and i remove it . im stuck between timing chains, cam shaft sensor od solinoid can u help .cheers
Thank you my guy
Wonderful video. It was so useful to diagnostic my case (which was an "Intermitent" failure, diagnosed by my 2004 Peugeot 406 Coupé's BSI).
Hi was yours the cam sensor failure nate ? Helping a friend with a 107 . Crank no start . Spark on cylinders 1 only it's not ignition coils or spark plugs ruled that out
