Me and my dad used to make kid sized rocking chairs every Christmas for like 10 years to leave on people's doorsteps in our neighborhood and other people who had kids. We started in July and averaged 50 plus every year. One of my favorite parts was driving around in the truck and running the chairs to the door steps, knocking, and running. We almost never got sighted so we were able to do this secretly for a very long time. My father is now suffering from dementia so this video really hot home for me. Thank you for sharing your skills with us. Have a Merry Christmas
I've gotta say, I honestly like the 5 minute board the best. I definitely appreciate the time and skill that went into the 5 day board, but the simplicity of a beautiful live edge board just does it for me.
Tough call on the favorite. The five minute version would get used most frequently because of less guilt cutting into it 😊. I like the clean design of the five hour and the beautiful complexity of the five day. The five day version wins the challenge out of sheer admiration for the craftsmanship.
The 5 day one is endgrain - so won't mark up as much as the other versions. Imagine holding a handful of spaghetti, and cutting it with a knife. when you cut it on the flat/long/horizontal side, there's a lot of resistance. If you push the knife in the "end" where all the ends of spaghetti meet, the knife will fall through the bits of spaghetti. Same on an end grain cutting board but on a microscopic level - it'll take years for any "bad" scratches to build up.
@@TheMerce101 Completely agree - but as a consumer, would you want to be replacing your board every few weeks(if you want it pristine) or few months with normal use to totally ruin it, bits of wood flaking off in your food, and importantly DULLING YOUR KNIVES etc, or would you want a board that after several years of heavy use there's not a mark on it, saving you £100's on knive sharpening(or many hours if you do it yourself) for 10x the price? I know which one i'd want!
La de 5 minutos la usaría todo el tiempo, la de 5 horas solo cuando hay visitas y la de 5 dias sería solo para admirarla colgada en la pared como lo que es, una obra de arte!!!!

It's nice to see the honesty that mess ups are a natural part of woodworking even for someone who's a legit pro.
The five minute board was actually the most amazing. I was vicariously exhausted just watching you fly around your shop trying to get that one finished.
I made a wooden shelf from 3/8” redwood in junior high school and I had a piece big enough for a trivet left over. A few minutes with a wire brush and belt sander and I brought it home. The shelf went by the wayside a few years later, but my mom used that simple trivet for many years (my dad even reglued it when it split), and it was one of a few things I brought home when it was time to clean out my parents house. Sometimes the simple things are the best.

Wow! The 5-day is the most intricate and beautiful cutting board I've ever seen. Amazing mathematical and 3-dimensional thinking and execution. God bless you.
Just so everyone knows (some of you probably already do): Glue doesn’t need to be clamped all the way until the squeeze-out is dry. It needs to be clamped until the glue is set (that’s different for every brand of glue). You could get the workpiece out of the clamps by then but can’t put lots of pressure/stress on it yet. So if you need the clamps for something else (because you always need more clamps), you could get it out faster and let it harden. (I live in Belgium and have always done it this way.)
I dont know but something looks off with the 5 day one at the close up at 33:33. Looks to me that the bottom part is turn the wrong way, To me something looks off witht that second from the bottom to. You can see the clear line through the board. On the top half ithe lines dieappear better. Perhaps it is just the camera angle. But it looks very nice.
He said he was having trouble matching the corners perfectly so I bet he just made a design call. I think it looks like mountains on the bottom half there. Very cool
It does looks a bit off, probably due to grain direction. But it is the only part that is actually weaving. The top part is just squares on top of square .
C'est ce que j'ai remarqué aussi. Quand on regarde bien, elle est posé dans le mauvais sens. Une rotation à 180°. Dommage car on ne voit que ça. Sur un tel motif, l'erreur ne pardonne pas.
its been a year since i"ve got to play with woodworking due tome surviving a stroke sure enjoy watching you makes me more determined to get feeling back in my left arm and hand so I 'can play with wood again, my favorites are purple heart, paduk, black walnut & cherry. i enjoy your videos John!
My father who is unfortunately suffering from dementia, is a master wood worker. This video reminds me of how much joy woodworking brought to him. Thank you for showing us your skill and joy of working in the shop.
Also, my dad could have sold these chairs for probably $300 to $500 at the time. I'm proud to say he never sold a single chair, they were all meant to bring joy to the families who received them.
Sorry but I gotta share this. On at least 2 separate occasions my dad had a mishap and unfortunately split his thumb on the table saw. The first time he did this it took him about an hour to stop working due to his focus and his lack of feeling in his fingers due to having diabetes. He finally stopped working and cane inside only because the blood kept getting through the bandage and was getting on his wood. That and he knew my mom would be upset to find out he cut himself. Needless to say, he would get in trouble if he didn't check in to my mom periodically to prove he was okay.
0:16 WOW, your wife is gorgeous! You have 2 fun channels that I found a month ago. I subscribed immediately after watching you guys unbox a Lowe's return pallet. I don't do any woodworking, I would never try any of it. I took woodshop in 7th grade and built a porch swing that my dad NEVER used. I got an "A" for my swing too. It was nice. that was 35 years ago.
Sounds like you're still jilted your dad never used the swing😂 maybe because he was out working and trying to provide for you. Sounds like he was also a single father
Love the style of video. Love it love it love it. Feels modern and engaging, whereas a lot of woodworking videos are quite dry and geared towards people that are actually making the thing and wanting directions on how to do it. This gets everyone watching, even people who have never worked with wood in their life and might continue to not to
5 day one is awesome, i noticed there us one strip that looks like you put in opposite direction or grain orientation. It's just an amazing board, absolutely amazing.
That 5-Day cutting board is _too_ nice. Whose going to cut anything on that? Plus, hundreds of dollars for that work of art you prop up against a kitchen wall and just enjoy looking at it. Maybe.... maybe use it as a serving tray? I can see the two other cutting boards being used though. And yes, Etsy has some sweet custom cutting boards.
The 5 day one is endgrain - so won't mark up as much as the other versions. Imagine holding a handful of spaghetti, and cutting it with a knife. when you cut it on the flat/long/horizontal side, there's a lot of resistance. @@headleshydra scratches from years of daily use would just make it more beautiful anyway, not less. It's a hell of a board, but to not use it would be a tragic waste
Perfect charcuterie board imo... for those who can still afford the ham and cheese to go on it after shelling out the hundreds of dollars that the board should deservedly be priced at.
I like the 5 minute and 5 day ones best. The 5 min one is the one that I would happily use every day, the 5 day one is the most aesthetically pleasing one but I would use it only for special occasions, as a serving board.
I hate to say it. But I think one of the strips in the 5 day board is upside down. When the whole board is shown at @33:33 the second from bottom strip looks like it’s the wrong way around. You don’t have the defined squares you do at the top because of it.
Awesome woodworking. If i had to pick the best looking for myself, i would always pick the 5 minute one, but the craftmanship on others are impressive.
Five minute board, the most hygienic...practical, functional and beautiful as cutting board...a must in any kitchen! Five hour board, handsome as a serving board or tray...would make an awesome cheese display tray... Five day board, intriguing art work...a lovely mural for an entrance or narrow wall which is also a focal wall...too busy for a cutting board, and the joints that over time may pull loose and hide pathogens...just too risky :)
End grain is both more hygienic and better for your knife. Actually, there likely isn't much difference on the hygiene front but if forced to I'd bet on that one
For a cutting board to use, The simplest one is the best. Cutting boards are a consumable in the kitchen. For wall art, Either of the other two would look good in any kitchen.
I made an edge-glued hickory cutting board. It is more of a butcher block than a cutting board because I keep it next to my stove and it covers virtually the entire side counter. It cost $15 for the wood, just a single 1x6x4’ board. For the steaks I cut on it, it works great. It leaves a slight hickory taste too.
Just stumbled across this channel. Love the edits,😂also clumsy me would have lost a finger or two. I love the 5 minute cutting board but I appreciate the functionality of the 5 hour one too. Great job👏🏽
Awesome skill and thank you for sharing. As pretty the 5 hr and 5 day boards are, for longevity, I would always pick the 5 min one. When a board gets used multiple times daily, a board made out of a solid piece of wood, will last longer than one which is glued together. Cutting and washing will let water get in eventually and the board will become unstable. That does not mean I would not also buy one of the other 2., but to me they are more for cutting bread only or to serve charcuterie. This is my own opinion
That 5 day board looks goooood🎉 I will try the 5 hr one.... we don't hv much choice of natural colour woods in my country. Can easily get mahogany and cypress but not other hard woods
Love being able to see the behind the scenes of how cutting boards are actually made. I'm curious for the 5-day version, how many actual active labor hours went into it versus how much time was it sitting around to dry?
The slab is really nice and warm feeling but that 5-day job really looks like the fine craftsmanship that would become a family heirloom. People don't put that kind of effort into things anymore these days. Love to see it.
The five minute board is the one ~I~ use at home, the 5 hour one is the kind I make for family at X-mas, and the 5 day one is the one I try to sell. Which means I can sell the 5 min and 5 hours boards at craft fairs/on Etsy for a fair price and the 5 day will be the piece that looks pretty but comes back home for several years running because it's gonna be $$$.
Though I gotta ask, what are you doing with the off cuts? Seems to me like they might be able to be used for a nice --if simpler-- pattern. And maybe the one you borked up you could use for coasters?
I love the five-hour one. The color on the edges is wonderful. I adore the simplistic practicality of it and versatility. I saw no imperfections that would annoy me.
I’m rather disabled at this point in my life…but I’m not dead yet…so I’m gearing up to start woodworking…seeing your work is getting me excited to get going….ill need to start on a much smaller scale. I want to build drums 🪘 for adults , and toys for kids,, audio speakers is something I would enjoy building as well. ….thanks for the inspiration…Tom

Love the Ron Seandon portrait. He's who i aspire to be. Not just in woodworking but in life.
Those look amazing! Thanks for the support, John! 🇺🇸
I'm a new wood turner and just happened upon you and this video, and I'm soooo happy I did! I thoroughly enjoyed watching you and learning some new things. Immediate subscribe!
I love the practicality of a good end-grain cutting board, but the 5 minute board looks great.
Wow! The 5-day is the most intricate and beautiful cutting board I've ever seen. Amazing mathematical and 3-dimensional thinking and execution. God bless you.
The 5 hour board is really great as a gift. 5 hours is not too much time to give and it looks really nice.
Yeah...
He said he was having trouble matching the corners perfectly so I bet he just made a design call. I think it looks like mountains on the bottom half there. Very cool
Agree
You can see it on John’s face during the 5min board… “Why the f*** are the paper towels all the way over here”…
My father who is unfortunately suffering from dementia, is a master wood worker.
I bet you didn't think this video would make anyone emotional. 😢 thank you yet again for posting this.
Working as fast as possible with dangerous power tools……SWEET!!!
I like these videos/this series because it illustrates the importance of taking your time and just how long woodworking projects take.
Ouch. Easy bro people have feelings. My apologies if your a bot
Love the style of video. Love it love it love it. Feels modern and engaging, whereas a lot of woodworking videos are quite dry and geared towards people that are actually making the thing and wanting directions on how to do it. This gets everyone watching, even people who have never worked with wood in their life and might continue to not to
I know this wasn’t an ad for that glue but it probably should be 😂
First video of you that I've ever seen (and I'm not really that into woodworking, actually not at all) and I'm SOLD! Wow! Really nice job!
Wow the 5 day looks amazing, but I like the simple 5 hour for a daily board.
As much time and effort you’re put into it all. I really love the rugged look of the five minute board.
If nothing else, the 5 minute board was a great ad for Mirka. It did an awesome job of cleaning up the edges really quickly.
Love that Mirka knot removal tool
5 day one is awesome, i noticed there us one strip that looks like you put in opposite direction or grain orientation. It's just an amazing board, absolutely amazing.
The editor needs a raise. When you showed all the cutting boards at the end, the editor perfectly timed the beats of the music.
I don't even do woodworking but I love your videos!!! That 5 day board even though you "messed up" is phenomenal. Great job
I would 100% use that board. Using it shows appreciation for the work put into it.
@@fourringking
I appreciate it too much to use it, if I bought it or something similar off of Etsy.
You don’t have the defined squares you do at the top because of it.
the 2 bottoms ones got flipped. r1 and r2 are flipped and rotated 180. very sad cuz it kills how i feel about it
Yeah, but that's what makes it "real".
Live them all but the 5 hour is my favourite! Classy, elegant, simple with beautiful character! Love it!
Awesome woodworking. If i had to pick the best looking for myself, i would always pick the 5 minute one, but the craftmanship on others are impressive.
You do realize that warning is misspelled at the 1:10 mark.
Warnging lmao
In de warninging
He was rushing and sprinting through it
I love what you do and love hearing that Pittsburgh accent. Having grown up in the area, it sounds like home.
That last board is . . . stunning. No other word for it.
For a cutting board to use, The simplest one is the best. Cutting boards are a consumable in the kitchen. For wall art, Either of the other two would look good in any kitchen.
Great watch and great introduction to your channel!! Look forwards to watching other amazing videos
next time without cuts
I made an edge-glued hickory cutting board. It is more of a butcher block than a cutting board because I keep it next to my stove and it covers virtually the entire side counter. It cost $15 for the wood, just a single 1x6x4’ board. For the steaks I cut on it, it works great. It leaves a slight hickory taste too.
Just stumbled across this channel. Love the edits,😂also clumsy me would have lost a finger or two. I love the 5 minute cutting board but I appreciate the functionality of the 5 hour one too. Great job👏🏽
By far, mix of quality, skill, and entertainment is unparalleled with wood working channels. Love your show
John is usually so goofy, then he does something like this and I'm reminded he actually knows his stuff.
Wow! Amazing work! My dad was a great wood worker! If he was still alive, he would love your videos!
the "its so hot in here" "OHH" had me rewinding a few times. NICE WORK BOI
I think a border on the 5 day one would look really cool. something like a dark wood type to give an outline. still looks great though.
I absolutely love the dedication for the 5 day board and its very beautiful. My personal favorite though is the 5 minute one.
I'm back! Puke and Rally! This went through my head before it came on the screen. Lost my biscuit when it came on! Keep up the awesome work John!
30:08 ft Riley Ks is where the big red one resides nice glad to see those flags up there man I also saw a cav flag up there too if I’m not mistaken
Hey if I got a flag from my unit would u put it on ur wall
The last one was as if im looking at a kaleidoscope endlessly, damn bro, hats off
The five minute board is the one ~I~ use at home, the 5 hour one is the kind I make for family at X-mas, and the 5 day one is the one I try to sell.
ALL THREE ARE FANTASTIC JOHN!!! *CHEFS KISS*
That 5 min challenge was extremely entertaining to say the least and damn good exercise as well 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love the five-hour one.
I love the over all shape and looks of the 5 hour board the best. Not overly complex and distracting, but good looking.
Honestly, all things considered, even though it might not have been finished to the standards that John would've preferred, the 5 min board is absolutely fantastic!
