Thank you for the information and video I have been looking for, unfortunate for 48 YEARS! Yes, 48 years. On our 1976 honeymoon we [okay, I] bought 2 LARGE Redwood burls from a roadside wood yard in Sausalito, CA. Had been outdoors for ? Years, unsold due to their sizes, which dictated the pricing of the dozens of dinner plate & tray sizes of most of his wood blanks. Sold those for clock, small tables, plaques, etc. Anyway, they have moved across the country twice with us. Finally found a way to support 1 as The Table in a corner of our living room [@6' x 5']. The 2nd still in garage [@8' x 3>5'], 1 end doglegs a bit to 1 side. The slab isn't much wider but it requires a 'wider' overall rectangular space to lay flat. Told my new bride "will make a great breakfast bar!" She bought that line literally and figuratively in 1976! And she has reminded me of that many times! I burned out 2 electric sanders over the early years trying to smooth 1 of the 2 faces with the original saw marks. LOL! Luckily, both slabs had a relatively smooth face 'for showing'. Unfortunately, I am now too old to manhandle either piece (2) vs (5) people to move since they have dried out. Your video brought back many memories tied to our 'future' Dining Table & Breakfast Bar. Thank you!!
Wow! I am stunned. Thank you all for comments. My career brought us back to where I was born, Colorado. Altitude is @6000' and dry [snows mostly in the mountains, not where we live]. This video gave me some ideas to consider that maybe doable , considering my limitations. I have just started working with epoxy, but I have been undecided about filling the cracks and channels in the slabs. Gives them 'character ',
0% chance you'll read this comment since you have a bajillion subscribers. But, when gluing veneer, I've found that using epoxy as your adhesive can help with the moisture issues. PVA glue is water based, so it introduces water to the veneer, which causes uneven moisture and curling/cupping/twisting.
Great job! And I love that you had Sam doing some of the explaining this time and he seems way more involved since the failed bend table. Great way to bring it back. Happy to see your videos on my FYP again 🎉
Maybe you should have an insect mesh screen on the door and a fly zapper by the door. So flies can't easily get inside and if the do get inside, they will be drawn away from the resin project.
That table turned out insane! The burl veneer in the legs was absolutely the right choice ❤ Also loving seeing Sam fully exploiting his protected status 😂 the way you guys all handled the inflated internet outrage with grace and humour is awesome to see! 😊
I've watched you for what feels like 2 or 4 years and enjoyed all your content but never commented until now. That table is beautiful. Agree that a Cam/Blacktail-style subtle chamfer on the underside edge would elevate it even further, but it's an absolutely stunning table
@@sebastianbenner977 just something that happened a few videos ago but now they are good and as the guy said their chemistry has definitely got better 😁

Gibson uses bookmatched maple veneers on the tops of their les pauls and they essentially have a full build video on their UA-cam channel that yall could easily follow. Would be sick to see!
I don't think they have what it takes to be luthiers. Sure building the lp body shape with veneer might not be difficult but they'd never be able to do the binding on the body nor would they set the neck properly or get the scale length correct.not to mention the fretboard and frets. I like John but I think that's just a little out of their league. Yeah sure they poured 2 epoxy guitars but they also used pre-made bolt on necks.. an lp with a bolt on is an atrocity
@andrewdobosz3682 Other than a large slack belt sander, they have everything in their shop to make it happen. Gibson CNCs all of their bodies now. Even the binding grooves. Also, not all Les Pauls even have binding. Could still be a fun video even if it doesn't come out super quality. Or they could collab with BurlsArt or someone like that on here.
@@andrewdobosz3682 I might not expect them to build a custom shop level guitar on the first go, but John definitely has what it takes to give it a fair go, especially with Chris' CNC skills. That table is absolutely SICK!! That burl is absurd and the perfect use of the clear and black to still be able to see the burly edges is NASTY!! (In a positive sense of course.
What if you had large holes that led to a full aquarium underneath. Use the top table portion as an attached feeder/viewing tank. The fish will swim up into the table portion. It will allow for a much better fish friendly tank setup and clean up.
Wow. Amazing work. Love the fact you show the process, warts and all. Very instructive. Shows even a Master Craftsman has stuff to learn. Very, very nice.
Looks amazing! Curious to see what it looks like in your space though. Dark furniture can be really amazing with the right contrast. I was hoping to see some cream or white resin instead of black this go around to compliment those beautiful wood tones
I'm curious - you only polished it without adding any finish on top to protect the end result. How well will that stand up to everyday use? Blacktail studio usually adds a nano coating to protect the finish if I remember correctly.
Awesome table. Sooooo on the east side of Pennsylvania there is Martin Guitar. They have tours and when you finally decide to build a guitar you could come over and go on the tour get some inspiration! It is a great tour I've done it. Have an amazing day!
Another way to lay out the wood pattern is by printing out picture (8”x10”)of the full slab and cut picture apart to lay out in a proportion downsized box. Should get a better visual of what final project will look like.
Sensational result. You push it with trying new things on such an important (and expensive) project. However it turned out fantastically. Once again - well done.
I love seeing all these woodworking youtubers getting their slabs from Goby Walnut. I drive by their milling place almost every day! So that cookie was almost certainly milled right by my house! Nice job. Looks sick. Next time, I would love to see a piece of wood like you started with made into a tabletop, maybe try and cut some streams going thru it. I love the uneek shape
Since the black layer is opaque, you should have placed some scrap oak strips in the bottom of the mold, at the bottom of the river. This will not only fill some of the bulk, saving black resin, but it will give you a proper bite to any leg fasteners and C-channels. Of course, you could also put fiberglass or fiberfill at the very bottom of the mold. That will make the epoxy work as it was intended, forming a strong composite material.
Wow John. The workmanship you and your team put into this is phenomenal. The end result is outstanding. Very well done. It it a piece of art at it's best. Thank you for sharing this with us all. Take care and be safe. 👍👍😉😉

Hi! I love your work but I was shocked when you mixed the resin with acetone. I do a lot of things with wood & resin but I usually coat with pure resin first. Can you tell me why you add the acetone & what the ratio should be? 🙏🏻
a thing we do with tables, but is also a possibility with those veneers. put ur track on it, with a slight overlap and cut into it, either forward or backwards, depending on the thickness. that would allow for a better seem

That my friend is a beautiful piece of work. what a build. Yeah I would keep that one too.
Absolutely stunning craftsmanship!
