Turned out AWESOME!! Did this almost exactly as explained EXCEPT I used the primer as I HAD a green tub (to white). I couldn't be more happy and this saved me hundreds of dollars!! I have been putting off my bathroom remodel because of this ugly tub.. expensive to replace and a pain to remove! A must ..follow advise of mask.. paint is very strong, do not beathe this in! I did paint over the overflow just to hide that it was pitted... looks great. This did take days to do as it must dry 24 hours after each time it primed or painted, but wow worth the time and energy.
With the exception of the drain, I would have taken everything off and painted it outside the home. In my mind that would be way easier than hanging all of that plastic and dealing with the paint solvents. You can also buy new trim plates and shower nozzles for not too much money. Anything that's really hard to take out, I would leave in and paint! This was very interesting and quite useful. I applaud your safety efforts as well!
I appreciate your instructions and how detailed you were in describing why you did what. I am contemplating on doing the same to my bathroom. Thanks again!
I’m definitely going to use this method since the fixtures in my shower are so old they won’t come off without risk of breaking. Like you mine is just a temporary upgrade until I can gut my bathroom.
Would love an update on the drain and finish! Would love to do matte black on my shower fixtures but didn’t know if the water would affect the finish over time!!
It's all holding up well so far. There is a little wear around the outside edges of the drain but not enough to be noticeable unless you're looking for it. I'm hoping to be done with the rest of the bathroom makeover videos within the next few weeks then I'll definitely post a bathtub update video.
@@TheNiftyNester thanks for the update , I am currently renovating my mom's bathroom and there are a few items I have been considering spray painting because either they weren't available in brushed nickel , or were way too expensive to purchase in brushed nickel. Really glad that you shared your experience, this is super helpful
This was a great video. And yes you can take off the fixtures to spray them somewhere else but with older fixtures you want to be careful with that because you could end up having to replace a fixture. One suggestion I have is that they sell pretty cheaply the Rust-Oleum Economy Spray Grip Accessory which makes it easier for you to apply paint spray coatings. You can get more expensive ones too. Your hands don’t get so tired and they do a great job. They sell them at all the home-improvement stores. They make a big difference.
How's it holding up a year later? I'm curious on the piece that moves up and down to ignite the shower.. Please let us know out show us! So curious! Looked amazing!
I cant help but thinking, painting the faucet n such first, might have been more productive lol Thank you for the video, cuz it was rly very helpful! Looks great!
I would think it would have been so much faster and easier to remove the hardware (it's actually easy) to paint elsewhere than to painstakingly mask off and then tarp around everything. Also, were you able to spray paint the shower head without getting any paint onto the ceiling? Your bathtub looks great! I'm going to go watch that video right now to see how you did it!
Thank you! It probably would've been easier to remove everything but in all honesty I just didn't want to and wasn't really comfortable removing everything (plumbing and electrical makes me nervous, I haven't attempted much of either yet). There was a tiny bit of overspray above the shower head but I hadn't finished the walls or ceiling yet at that point so I wasn't worried about it. If they had been finished already I would've taken the plastic up higher which I probably should've mentioned in this video.
Thank you! Sorry about that, I probably should've added more at the end. When I get the blog post up (hopefully soon) I'll link it in the description box here and add more pics in the blog.
Thank for sharing the video, i have a question regarding the resistance to chemicals, have you tested the paint against cleaning detergents? Will it last?. Thank you in advance
Hi Loved your videos on both the fixtures and bathtub and shower surround renovations. It's now 2 years later and I am wondering how the bathtub/surround and fixtures are holding up? I also thought, hmmm...would it have been easier to do the fixtures first and then the tub and surround? I am about to do the same updates that you did, so I really would like some feed back. Please share your thoughts with me. Thanks 💗
You did a very thorough job of prepping the area. Would it have been less work to remove the fixtures, paint them elsewhere, dry them, and replace them?
It is really not that difficult to remove the hardware and will result in a better and longer lasting job. It's even easier to do even if you have only a little acquaintance with plumbing. Even so, it looks like you did a good job and I congratulate you on your effort.
Kudos to you for taking on such a daunting project, however, all those fixtures you painted AROUND should have been removed BEFORE you did the tub paint. Its not that hard and you impress me as someone who could handle that. It really looks great!!!! I'd like to know how it looks in a year.
Thank you! I plan on doing an update in the future. As far a removing the fixtures, I definitely could've but this isn't meant to be a permanent renovation, more like a mini reno to get us by a couple years until I can come back and gut the entire bathroom. So with that in mind I wanted to create as little work as possible for myself. Taping everything off seemed like a quicker way to do this.
It's holding up surprisingly well! I'm extremely pleased and plan on doing the same thing to our other shower when I get to that bathroom. I think this will last for years, depending on how hard the kids are on it. I might have to do a touch up after a couple years but so far it's still like the day I finished it. Good luck to you!
Thank you, I'm so glad to hear from someone that's tackled this project themselves! I use 50/50 vinegar water to do most of my household cleaning and it works really well on my painted bathtub and fixtures. I just use a sponge (not a scruffy- sided one, just a soft one) with the vinegar water and it's worked to clean it most of the time. If I have a stubborn spot I'll use a bleach cleaner but I've only had to do that a couple times when I let it go too long. It's actually been easier to clean than my original tub surface was.
@@TheNiftyNester Thanks for responding it means alot. I would like to share my outcome. How can I send you pictures? Also I noticed a bit of rust forming on top of the marine paint. It scrubs away did I miss something in the process? Has that happened to your tub?
I would love to see the outcome! The easiest way would be to message them to me on Instagram @theniftynester . I also have an email address but I'm horrible about checking it, Cherie@theniftynester.com , if you sent it there let me know so I can make sure to check it. I haven't had any rust on mine, sorry I don't know why you're having that problem. Did your original tub have a rust issue? Sometimes rust bleeds through. Also could it be from the bottom of one of your toiletries in the shower, like how shaving cream sometimes causes rust rings? The only other thing I can think of is that it could possibly be rust coming from your water lines or shower head? Let me know if you figure out what's causing it, I'm going to look in to it as well and see if anyone else has had that happen. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to seeing your results!
Lots of good info in your videos. Small details including the overflow plate saved me time and money. I watch how-to's, keep going, your style is great. I'm curious, it looked like the overflow gasket was coming out. Did you put in a new overflow gasket?
Thank you so much! I didn't but I probably should have. That bath is only over used for showers so I wasn't really worried about fixing the drain or the overflow, I just wanted to make it look better until I can install a walk in shower someday.
Thank you so much! I'm sorry to hear yours is peeling. That's no fun. I would scrape off what you can and then sand the rest down. Since it's been painted, I would use the Rustoleum Marine Primer (even if it looks like you've gotten most of the old paint off), then use the Topside Marine Paint.
Sorry your paint peeled. I am curious what paint you originally used? I really want to only do this renovation once. I would be sad if my paint peeled after so much work. I have reviewed a bunch of bathtub/surround videos that used the made for resurfacing kits. One showed a comparison of 4 different kits made for this. I was surprised to see that they all scratched pretty easily down the road. I was turned off to use them as they were so expensive. Thanks.
@@THELASTJENNY I used RTG. I even waited 4 days to use the tub. It looked great for a little bit but started to peel. I went ahead and had a professional company come and remodel the shower. They took the tub out so now I have a beautiful shower, glass doors and black fixtures. Cost a lot but definitely worth it. Good luck to you!
@@mimime5376 Yeah, I priced new ones. YIKES! Mine are an awful deep shade of harvest gold. I wondered about boat paint used for the underside of boats, if that would be a better alternative. The only thing different about them is they have an anti bacterial and fungicide in them, so no, that wasn't a better solution. I don't think there is any real fix accept new ones. Thanks for replying.
My granddaughter did her tub with the paint I used and hers is still in good shape. I think you should try it. Make sure to clean tub super good and let dry. Get sandpaper and sand entire tub and clean out. Next step is to paint. Give it a couple days to completely dry. My tub had to be done. It just wasn’t because I didn’t like the color. The porcelain on the tub started coming off and got down to the rusty base of the tub. I think you should try it.
Thank you for sharing ! I'm wondering if the paint will comes out ?the water would affect the finish over time? Can I paint the sink too ? Please can you do an update ?
I'm trying to get an update video done very soon, I've been behind on my editing and have a few videos to finish but hopefully it'll be soon. You can paint the sink as well. I haven't had any issues with the paint coming off during this last year, it's held up really well. There's not any chipping or peeling.
The texture is smooth, it's almost like a hard shell. There's no added texture but some of the original texture on the bottom of the tub is still there. I might use the grip additive just on the bottom next time so it's not as smooth as it is. And yes, you can use this on any tub/ tile/ sink.
I thought about doing the curtain rod but decided to just buy a new one. You could definitely spray paint it but my concern was that the curtain rings would rub the paint away over time as the curtain is pulled back and forth across it.
So far so good! Once I have the rest of the bathroom done I'll do an update on the bathtub (it's been a long process, lots of breaks in been projects over the holidays).
Are you looking to paint tiles in the shower, on the wall, or the floor? If they're in the shower or the wall, I'd suggest the paint I used on my bathtub. I used Rustoleum's topside marine paint. Two hours of masking the fixtures, plus the expense of painters tape and plastic drop sheet...or ten minutes to remove the fixtures so that you can take them outside and finish them properly without any concern of overspray...hmmm!

What type of paint is best for painting over bathroom tiles?
Are you looking to paint tiles in the shower, on the wall, or the floor? If they're in the shower or the wall, I'd suggest the paint I used on my bathtub. I used Rustoleum's topside marine paint. I have a video on that project as well. If you're painting tiles on the floor, I'd use Rustoleum's floor tile paint.
Do you lacquer this so there is a protectant coating?
I didn't, but you could use a clear coat spray. It's held up really well without one, but the drain area has a little wear around the outer edges. If I was going to do it all over again, I probably would've used a spray paint primer first. This paint isn't supposed to need one, but that drain area could've used one.
Do you have an update video?
I'll be filming the update next week and will have it posted in the next couple of weeks.
Sorry is yours bronze or nickel satin?
I used satin nickel, I think I linked the exact color in the description box if you're wanting to find it. If I'm remembering correctly I think it was the Rustoleum brand (I tend to use that brand a lot).
How has it held up?
So far so good! There's a little wear around the outside edges of the drain but not enough to be noticeable unless I'm looking at it closely.
