How to Refinish a Bathtub and Tile with Rustoleum Tub and Tile Kit

- 🛁 Using the Rustoleum Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit was actually extremely simple and has now lasted over 2 years through heavy use from a tenant.
Check out my new bathroom remodel HERE 👉 • Bathroom Demos | Cabin...
As most of you know, replacing tile would cost thousands of dollars 💰. I luckily came across this product and now remodeled an entire bathroom using it and I couldn't be happier - it took 3 kits to do my whole bathroom. If you just have a bathtub with tile above it, I'm sure you could get away with just 2 kits.
For the Tub and Tile Kit (2 Parts) - Click HERE 👉 amzn.to/2GNdVJ1
For the Foam Rollers - Click HERE 👉 amzn.to/3hZK6Sb
The Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit is as simple as mixing Part A with Part B, rolling it onto the bathtub and the tile, and then applying a second coat. The hardest part about all of this is cleaning the tile and prep work you'll need to do before painting this finish on the tile.
💦I used soap and water for the first cleaning, sanded down the tile to remove even more dirt and to make abrasions in the tile, then cleaned again, then painted.
The whole thing is pretty simple and I hope you get the same results with the Rustoleum Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit that I did to turn your bathroom tile as white and clean as mine! (I am not sponsored, just loved this stuff).

*Update:* Tenants just moved out and I got a new look at the tub. 2 years and STILL perfect under 2 different renters. See you next June for 3 yrs (hopefully my tenants don't move tho).
This product has now lasted 1 entire year with a tenant using it and there are *NO* issues so far.
It's the only bathroom in the house so it got a ton of use - so I'm happy with this. What is your experience with this?
Thanks for the video. I've heard from other investors that the kit doesn't hold up. How many coats did you use? Are there any special instructions you gave the tenant about cleaning?
@@JasonJFlippingLife I've also seen the mix of good reviews and bad reviews so I was skeptical at first. I think it ultimately comes down to cleaning still and I doubt most people bother with sanding (which also cleaned a ton of gunk). I put on 2 coats and went really heavy with the 2nd one between the grout lines. I didnt ask the tenant to do anything special, but he did seem like a clean dude.
@@KellyConcepts makes sense. I'll try sanding. Thanks
Thank you so much for the video, update & links!! Ordered my kit and supploes, can not wait!!!
Ekopel 2k is nontoxic and lasts 10 to 15 years.
I have done this with a pink tub and tile. The key is be diligent with the prep. Multiple THIN coats. I did three and gave it a full 7 days to cure after. Absolutely no water running in the bathroom until it was done. If you see ANY fish eyes on the first coat, sand and clean again in that area. Your first coat will reveal any inadequate prep.
This is the comment I was looking for. I just used it on the floor in my guest shower. I'm putting my house on the market and it needed a little sprucing up. I can tell in a few spots it needs a little more.
Holy shit. This is so helpful! I live in a very old house and one of the bathrooms is yellow. This video is about to change my life, haha.
Me too!
Same! Its pee yellow and black lining 🥲
Did you do it? How’s it holding up? I have the same exact bathroom and I’m curious about longevity
@@lindseywhitman3138 I ended up moving out :( Never got to try it!
I followed your instructions to a 'T,' and the makeover on my rusted old tub looks AMAZING! Thank you for posting your video.
How has it handled cleaning this past month?
Updates? 😇
Any updates since it had been 3 years ?
Thank you so much for an extremely well made, concise, to- the-point, video. You were able to keep your audience engaged with how to's and limited banter. Appreciate that so much as a viewer ☺️
Great video. I prefer to watch video from individual home owner than someone who receives sponsorship from the manufacturer. They give unbiased opinion.
The circle on the toothbrush holder is to hold a cup. After brushing, use the cup for water or mouthwash to rinse your mouth out. 😉
Is there an update on how well this is holding up?
Not gonna lie, I liked it when it was pinkish-orangish-tan with rust colored trim. But I get it that you had to do this for your rental. I love the American 1950s tiled bathrooms. Thanks for the informative vid and true to life demonstration. It will be helpful when I turn a white tiled bathroom to the color of my choice.
Same. I have white tiles with black trim on top. I want to save the black on top but won't look right I feel. I will tape off black skinny row at top and see how it goes. If no good then I will paint those tiles after.
I agree. Sad to see the unique character be painted away. I’m actually here for help trying to restore the original character of my 1954 bathroom.
Great! You just saved me thousands of dollars. Thank you.
Awesome! Yea it also saved me a ton of money 😄
Thank you. Old bathroom looked like mine, except green lol.
Going to try this
This looks like my bathroom too, except it’s lavender. Good luck to you!
Color tile bathrooms are so trendy right now...... So jealous, I'm sitting here with tan 🙄
I see this video was posted 2 years ago, I wonder if you have another video showing the update and how it looks now. 🤗 thank you for this video!
Such an amazing transformation! Love how some elbow grease and paint can drastically change a space!
Yea lol
HGTV: "updating this bathroom will put a $5,000 dent in the budget"
Me: "I can do it for $500"
I didn't see a link in the description for the elbow grease and looked all Amazon for it, where do you purchase it?
Love the redo. I have EXACT same bathroom design only its pink and white, ick! I cant find your list of products. Finding the Rustoleum is a challenge in 2022. Thank you so much! Brillant!!
Same exact situation I’m in. Did you find an alternative?
@@ahnsaunders4731 I found the rusteolum. Got the 2/3 from homedepot. Need one more before the renovation can begin.
Did it peel off?
How long did you wait between coats and how long until you were able to use it ?
Great, helpful video. Annoying music.
Instead of sanding, would it work to use a primer?
Wow. TY so much! You're right. I've watched 3 vids on this but this is the ONLY one I needed. So happy!
I'm glad this helped, thank you for watching!
Thank you for this video! We bought a flip house where the ladies who did this home didn't do the tubs correctly. Less than a year into this house we noticed the sealant in the tub was flaking off. We have family living with us now and we have to redo the entire shower in the guest bathroom. This is a must watch video for anyone needing to make their old shower look new! (We bought a 1970's home so one slower is a hideous green and the other is a rose pink color. They have both been redone in white and look brand new.... Except for the flaking we are fixing this week.)
How did you fix the flaking? Sand it down to the tile and redo it?
@@kellijomo oh she will check back with you next week. 🙄
Best video yet that I have viewed to complete this project!! Well done!! Thank you!!
We have the exact same bathroom 😆. Mine is from 1937 in Detroit. This was very helpful! Thanks for sharing.
I love the tiles before! You're lucky. It was a bit sad watching this video, haha!
thank you for this very helpful video. You were right, this is the only video I should have watched, in some of the other videos the people didn’t even wear a mask or gloves😳😳. Thank you
can u use your own color of paint, or du u have to use theires??
I swear you're in my bathroom. I'm renovating a house from 1972 and it looks exactly like that bathroom! Tile from over the sink to and around the tub and around that damn window in the shower, why did people do that?! Thank you for the tips!!
Haha yea it's just asking for water issues around the window! Thanks for watching!
I also have the exact bathroom ! I guess it was a thing back then lol we live on the country side and water is hard even with water filter and all that I’m wondering if it’ll work on this transformation .... I usually use toilet Lysol cleaner because it’s the only thing I’ve bought that works on yellow water stains ? Has anything like this happened to anyone PLEASE ! Would hate to do all the work and investment to not work but I really fo wish to upgrade !
We have a 1956 house with bathrooms with exact tile (pink in one bathroom tan in other) and exact same tubs. Ours are sans the windows in the shower but even the towel bar and sink “fixtures” match. The tub is a jack hammer removal, and anything attached on tile is done so with screws through the til so one has to remove tile to change it. Definitely they built them to last LOL! Thanks for the video 💪🏼
@@dakatonedo you have the razor slit in your wall too? 😳 😊 🧔 back when men had stylish beards. Not homeless or lumberjack beards
Can you add color to it?
Nice video! Nice job masking with the blue tape. Reglazing and Refinishinh is an amazing process and definitely lasts with proper care. Thanks for the update a year later...
Looks great. The 5:47 circle is for soap, people used to use soap to brush their teeth.
I thought it was for a glass that you use for swishing :)
I just tried this. Some things worth mentioning: You need a ton of foam rollers - I went through 9 or 10 and I didn't even finish the bathroom. This stuff disintegrates the foam almost on contact. Also, you need to pay extra attention to grout lines. The house we bought is 60 years old and the grout was super eroded, so the rollers did not get down far enough to cover them with paint. I had to spend a lot of extra time running a foam brush along the grout lines so they would get painted. The soap dish is very hard to paint and have it look evenly coated. And, this stuff doesn't go very far...my bathroom is 6'x7' with tile half way up 7' walls and a tiled stall shower. I only got through 2 walls and the stall shower with the first coat/kit. I opened the second kit, and like others have mentioned, though I stirred the requisite 3 minutes, (and had no problems with the first kit) this kit was watery and never quite thickened. So, I had to use a ton to try and cover the bit of blue tile still coming through, and ended up not having enough to do a second coat all the way to where I'd finished the first coat. So, my bathroom looks crazy, and I'm not sure what to do since this is only available online and takes weeks to get delivered.
Home Depot sells a version by Homax called Tough & Tile refinishing kit. Hope this helps.
Beautiful job! We just bought a house built in 1973, with 70s tiled walls and floor in the bathroom.
I have this exact tile color and tub in my bathroom in Atlanta. I use this product on the tube and it holds up great. i plan on doing the rest of the tile in Sept. I didn't know about the sanding step so thanks for the tutorial.
Awesome and good luck! The instructions don't say to sand on the packaging, but I did learn that from someone else and it also really helped clean up all the dirt from these 70yr old tiles that wouldnt come off.
Great video and the round thing on the toothbrush holder is for a cup...
Thank you for this video and the links! I’m refreshing my parents home (their 90) and painting the bathroom tub and sink/counters to white :). I’m excited to see the outdated brownish 70s tile look fresh and new!! Your video made me feel like I can do this!!!
How did it come out? Any chance you can make a one minute video
Looks amazing
My house was built in the 60s and this is the exact tile. It’s on the floors, walls and in the tub/shower! I hate it!
Is you floor pink too? Ive been trying to figure out how old my home is and the tile is sort like this too pink/burgundy though
@@liviaree5410 this style became popular in the mid 30’s and lasted all the way into the 70’s
Pink/white
Tan/cream
Black/white
Pink/red
Pink/pink
Green/green
And sometimes purples and teals were all popular
Mine was built in the 50’s: My full bath was baby blue and yellow and the half bath is turquoise and white. So far, we’ve renovated the full bath (hated the baby blue/yellow) but still debating what to do to my turquoise half bath. This vid is a great idea!
@@0110Nay I have pink/black it's on the tub walls floor and around the walls yuck 🤮
Same. Except mine is pink and green. 😭
What if the bathroom has dodgy grout... do you recommend removing and regrouting the tiles first?
Thank you! I have faith in myself now!!! My tiles are black and salmon color....they will be white this spring!
How did it go??
I just started doing my bathroom today. I'm not sure how to explain it, but it is watery and goopy at the same time. It should be mentioned that the fumes are NO JOKE and it burns your eyes real bad.
This literally looks the same size as our guest bathroom. Thank you for the tip about using 3 kits bc i was only going to purchase 2.
No problem, and good luck! Definitely needed 3 kits 😄
This stuff basically turns into plastic when it dries. Pretty cool! About to do this to a second bathroom in my house. Thanks for the video.
Awesome! Good luck Rob - it is pretty amazing how solid this "paint" becomes
Thanks for the vid. I am planning on attempting this in a few weeks. You make it look very doable. Thanks again. I'm sure I'll be rewatching this a few more times.
Thank you and good luck! Cleaning is the most important part, after that you're good to go.
Amazing! Never knew you could paint over tile with that Rustoleum kit. Your bathroom looks brighter and bigger.
I actually like the color of the original tiles😊
Yeah this bloke has no soul. He's vandaluised a flawless art deco blue tub one time by doing this and making it white. He must be snowblind with how much white paint he's splashed around in the process of becoming a slumlord.
How has the paint held up. Is anything peeling off?
Looks great! How durable is this? Have you gotten any chips or cracks? I'm interested in doing this and I want it to be very durable and sustainible! Hope you can help!!
Hey sorry this comment slipped through.
After a year of tenant use, there were ZERO issues with this product. Again it's only been used for 1 year so I can't speak about longevity too much but I'm happy with it so far.
Also, for me - I don't expect this to be a permanent product but hoping it can delay replacing the 1950s tile for 5 more years or so...
Just bought a house I'm definitely gonna try this out on my full bath. Avoiding tub replacement would be awesome, hopefully I can pull it off well.
Good luck and just remember the cleaning is the most important part!
@@KellyConcepts thank you. I'm literally prepping list of supplies now.
Unless your budget is super tight, it would be better to replace the tub and tile. The paint won't last long. It normally last 3 to 5 years and it will start to peel.
@@lishen9223 it turned out quite well. I'm fine with this being a 3-5 year temporary fix. Once it does deteriorate I'll definitely look at replacement options.
From personal experience, most important step is the prep work, cleaning and sanding! You need the surface clean enough to eat off (but don't really do that 😉).
I used this on a bathroom abt 2 years ago and my sister did last year, same product, same color. Mine is still going strong while hers is not to put it kindly. The only difference, she only cleaned her tile once and then went straight to applying, no sand, no deep clean. I can't stress enough how important that is!
Our bathrooms are in vacation rental, so also very heavy use by people who don't care the way you do for your own home, just fyi.
Can you tell me what product you used to glaze and the name of the white paint
Hello my friend.
Another good repair and idea. Really good idea to fix the Bathtub and Tiles Kit. It's nice to create and share a variety of ideas to help many people. Congratulations. I wish you healthy days.
Great greetings.
Thank you! and I'm glad to see you on Instagram!
Loved it! Thanks for making it simple and straight to the point! Kinda rolled my eyes when you said this is the only video you’ll need but then I took that back at the end! 🙇🏻♀️ lol
Hello Sir…
Our bathroom looks about the same size same age.. question.. did you remove your toilet to get behind it or no?? Thank you
Will be doing mine soon.
I didn't remove mine on this one, I took the lid off the back, put tape up and down the sides of toilet closest to the wall, and then rolled behind it. No one would ever see the paint on the back of the toilet so I just did it the quick way.
Your bath looks great! I am in the prep stage of doing my shower (pink tile!). The sanding seems to be doing nothing. Even tried an 80 grit paper. I can see that yours still look shiny even after you sanded. What should I expect the tiles to look like after sanding? I want to make sure the paint adheres to the tile surface.
Hi Kimberlee, yea when you sand it doesnt look like much, even in person. It is still making abrasions on the surface that will help the paint stick better. The other purpose of sanding (for me) is cleaning up the tile even better since its from the 1950s.
I am having the same problem with my 70s bathroom tile.. I am also using 80 grit sand paper..
Tks for the video I actually have the same tub from the 1950’s. I followed your instructions and it turned out perfect 👍
Omg my bathroom needs this! It looks just like yours
I want to do this in my apartment building.
Do you think the fumes will be too strong.
Thanks
This video is handy. When I decided to resurface my tub, I did a lot of research, and the product you used is the one I found to be affordable and with a beautiful finish. Then I thought, why not do the tile, and as I contemplated this thought, I was thinking of breaking the walk and putting new tile, but I am so glad I ran into your video because I had not thought about using the same product for the tile and more. I am impressed at how nicely your entire bathroom restoration turned out. You inspired me to do the same. I'm so excited can't want to get started. If you have time, can you please answer one question. I have specks of mold in-between the tile crevices in some areas more than others, and my number one reason for wanting to remove the tile. I will curate the mold specks a day before, but with time will the mold seep through the restoring product? Thank you for doing such an awesome UA-cam video. 😁
I had the same question, did you ever complete the job and how did you prep or get rid of the moldy crevices between tiles. Did the mold come back after renovating?
Does the paint come off with time after washing and scrubbing the bathroom?
Comrade, a tip: Next time do your after shot during the day. Your night version already looks brighter and cleaner than the before shot, with full sunlight it'd be a spectacular transformation. Anyways, that's my 2c, thank you for the useful/informative video!
What can we do for a shinier finish? Extra coat of varnish?
You used protective gear!!!! Yea!!!! Great DIY video. Keep up the great videos!!
LOL because I couldn't breathe without that mask even if I wanted to! Also - I just watched a show where the dude couldn't finish his cabin build because of health and that really got to me. Safety is becoming priority.
YOU DID A BEAUTIFUL JOB
Thank you!
Thank you for this video! We have a bathroom that looks terrible! This gives us a good idea for repairing our bathroom!
Wow you did a beautiful job on that bathroom doesn't take that much to have a beautiful home it just takes some elbow grease thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the tips, doing my bathroom vanity tomorrow, fingers crossed!
Prep is key. It's just like you're painting a car. You got all the substrate clean and even tack clothed. I would offer that during sanding, a hand detail of all the not flat nooks and crannies would be a good extra step. 3M scrub pad thingy or sand paper (even a used disc) Everything you are going to coat needs to look dull from being given "teeth".
I’m in the middle of this project. I tried 220, 120 and 100 grit paper on my orbital sander. Barely did anything. Now using 60 grit and it’s finally removing the gloss finish. My bathroom is nearly identical to this one.
I guess my question (I’ve never done this before) is do I have to sand the tile down to a flat/matte finish before applying the paint? In the video the tile still looks shiny when he applies it?
@@idonthavealithp Think molecular mountain range. The less glaze left the better, but the key is to hit everywhere at least a bit to provide "nooks and crannies to hold the melted butter". I'll bet our host gets away with the job he did, but my idea might buy a few more years. [Nooks and crannies courtesy 70's English muffin commercial.] And the goop used in this is pretty thick so it should hide 60 grit scratches. Da a test tile to make sure you don't need to smooth it first with finer paper. Be a shame to have to do it twice.
2 questions for you. How long did you wait between the first and second coat? Also, how did you do the small detailed spaces? Like the soap holder and toilet paper roll holder?.. did you use to foam rollers or a different brush?
Thank you so much for this informative video. I feel much more confident going into this now. Especially the prep work! That seems like an important step
Hey! I did the 2nd coat about 2 hours after the 1st coat. This stuff is pretty goopy so it dries quick. And the other little stuff was done with a foam brush that you can get for like $1. A regular brush will work too as this stuff smooths itself out.
I appreciate you watching, and yes cleaning is the most important part!
Great video.
How long did the process take: from beginning to end.
Would you recommend for the floor?
Hello Kelly,
Phenomenal video, thanks for including all the steps and products used in the refinishing project. I'll be ordering mine today.

Just finished glazing my bathroom! How long will it take for the smell to go away? It's been 5 days now and even with opening the windows with a fan I feel like the smell hasn't gone anywhere.
Just removed 14 year old caulk and silicone sealant from tub/shower with NO CHEMICALS :) I used a hairdryer, a box cutter and patiently pulled it off bit by bit. Happy DYIing and thank you for this @KellyConcepts
Thanks for the video! I am planning to do this. I have few chips in the side of my bathtub from removing shower doors a few years ago. Will this product cover those small chips in the tub? Also, could this work on a sink and counter top?
Hi Yolanda! This stuff is pretty thick, so it could cover some small chips of the tub (although you still may see a little dent still). This will also work for sinks and countertops, but may not last quite as long if you set things on it like a water glass, a hair dryer, or something hard.
@@KellyConcepts Thanks!
Do you need to caulk after if you reglaze the tiles and the tub?
This is the same exact tile and tub I need to redo
When you have time, start cleaning and getting it ready!
Mine is the same color to😂 going to try it . Thanks
BTW I got a little chuckle when you show the toothbrush holder and not sure what the “round thing” is for. It’s for a cup. 🤗
Wow fantastic job. The bathtub looks an amazing . Keep up the great work and keep in touch my new friend .Thanks for the share and have a great day .Best regards, Gosia
Thank you!
You bought 3 kits to complete this job. Do you know roughly the area size of tile this covered.
I’m doing shower tiles as well as tiles by the sink and I’m hoping to ensure I purchase enough for the tiles as well as tub and sinks.
Love the way the bathroom turned out! And yes - Bar Keeper's Friend is amazing!
Thank you!
Can update? Did it crust over time?can you use cleaner sprays in them to clean?
Thanks a million for the detailed, unsponsored review! I'll be trying this soon.
After this is done & ready to use, what cleaner do you use to clean the tub ?
I have heard it doesn't last a lifetime. So how long does it last ?
Excellent video! Quick question. Haven't purchased it yet. How long did you wait between coats, and how many kits did you buy? Thanks. Take care!
When sanding the bathroom what are you looking for?
Great tutorial...I’m getting ready to do this to our dated master bathroom. My question for you is do you think it will work on tile that has images on them. The base of the tile is beige but then some have flowers on them. Question 2 did you do anything to your grout before or after.
Hi Heather - sorry this comment is late. This will definitely cover any images/designs. It's a thick type of paint and you should apply 2 coats anyway. The most important thing with the grout is to clean it before hand. I also had to use a hand brush for some harder grout areas where the roller wouldn't get - but that's about it.
How did you get behind the toilet?
I used this product on my shower. Have you warn you, the fumes are extremely strong and toxic. I had a fan running 24/7 with an open window and it took at least 1.5 weeks for the fumes to evaporate completely.
Is there any other products you can get that is not strong my window does not open
Yeah, I heard that on another video using the same product.
Grow a pair paul.
Is it possible to add color to it? I want to paint my stone tile floor; I think a little grey color would be nicer than pure white...
Great video! question: could you refinish the floor tiles and walk on them using the same kit, and then walk on it? do you think it would last? my bathroom floor tile is also pink :/
thanks!
Thank you! If you were to walk on the finish with shoes, it probably wouldn't last very long. But if you are barefoot or wearing socks it would probably last a few years.
Interesting think I'm going to try this I've got old green tile. Similar set up around shower then half way up the walls the rest of the room.
Thank you so much for doing this! I have this exact project to do and like your bathroom mine has tile around the entire bathroom. I am concerned with the certain areas drying before I get one full coat on. It seems you did not have an issue. Any advice on stages of application? Also ventilation was the smell horrible? Was the window in the bathroom enough for ventilation?
No problem! I would start in a corner and go around your room until you meet back up where you started. Then let all of it dry for at least 2 hours and start from the same corner you did before. My window was not sufficient but I only had 1 open (it was 100+ degrees and no window screens). I'd open all house windows if you can. Thanks for watching! And good luck
Smell was horrible so if there's people at your home, go for a long walk while it dries.
Bat City Designs thank you sooo much for your response and advice!! I’m looking forward to this project despite the work it will take to complete.
This is my new project this years, My bathroom is a ugly green so I will let you know how it turns out.
How it Turn out
Update?
Update pls.....
Can this product be used on bathroom floor tiles?
I clicked on this because of the color tile. Would it cover pink and black tile? 🤢🤣
Itd definitely cover pink with 2 coats, but black would probably need 3 coats 😁
@@KellyConcepts Best bet is to buy more than you need and return any unopened product you didn't need. It's much better than stopping halfway through to go back to the store. At that point you pretty much have to wait until it dries before continuing on or you will get a mess wherever the new coat overlaps the old coat.
and just how much would this "refinishing" cost me to do a bathroom vs. a complete tile gut/remodel?
Great video and results!
I have some doubts about sanding, i think that i have remove all the old coating from tiles but it seems in ur video that after sanding they r still shining so remaining old coating is not a problem.
Could u please explain. Thanks
How many kit did you use for both walls and tub?
It's been 3 years. How well has it held up?
My tiles have shiny surface white shiny. Please what color is the greyish paint ?
Hi Kelly, I sure if you’re still checking comments but:
1. what caulk do you recommend afterwards?
2. No need to a straight edge foam brush for edges? Foam roller got all the nooks and crannies?
TY!
