i moved into a rental where the bathtub was installed incorrectly and had a low spot right before the drain. Standing water eventually wore the enamel and exposed the steel and it started to rust. Rental company said they wouldn't fix as it was cosmetic. I cleaned then sanded the hell out of it. Used automotive primer 2 coats, then applied 2 coats of semi gloss white enamel. It looked great but took way to long to dry as it was winter when i moved in and had to close off bathroom to vent the fumes. it looks awesome now, total cost `$12 and about 1 hr total work time. i still have to sponge water to drain after i take a shower but a small inconvenience.
Looks absolutely fantastic. I just wonder if it will keep its shine and good looks over some time. How do you think it will look 5 years down the road ??
nicely done! I didn't know such a thing was possible as an option to either replacing the tub or installing a cover over it. I'd like to do this to mine
I didn't know that they had these kits available I tried to patch up some things that I had in my metal bathtub and it started to rust so I have a lot of these black little dots from wear and tear also from cleaning it's starting to rust a little bit so I was looking for a refinishing kit so yours look a lot easier to use and the color is nice and white and bright and it's shiny and what I like about it is that you don't have to take the tub out
The kit comes with cleaning instructions. Basically you can’t use really harsh chemicals on it. I’ve had family paint tubs that have lasted 10+ years and are still going. Just make sure to clean the tub well before painting
As a refinisher for the last 18 years. Good job. A bit of over kill on some things and I wish you would not have used that wipe on bonding agent. Never had a tub last over 2 years when I tried it. Just clean well and make sure it is etched very well. I sand instead of using the chemicals but they do work well. Also I recommend making sure that the paint is anything other than a polyurethane or epoxy. I have had those turn yellow in the past.

Haven't tried them myself, but the rustoleum kit has alot more negative reviews on the home depot site. It seems like the bathworks one has worked better for most people
@@Jerk_ANC I decided not to because I was so worried about it peeling and I don’t have time to deal with it. I just ended up using white grout pens to turn my brown wall tile grout to white and it made my bathroom look better. That was months ago and they are still white!
I enjoyed your video. I'm renting my house and the maintenance people painted my bath tub. Now it is peeling and they don't want to prepare it. I'm going to keep looking at your video and try to do it myself. Thank You!
How did you decide on the Bathworks refinishing kits? I know there are a couple options, so curious how you evaluated your options. Really helpful video - Thanks!
I did some research of what was easily available and found the only two options were bathworks and Rustoleum. The bathworks had a lot more reviews that were positive and there were a couple UA-cam videos that used the bathworks product. Honestly I think either would have worked though
When done correctly this will give you a really good finished result. However, this is a very labor intensive process, as well you will need a lot of ventilation to exhaust the fumes. You will also need a commercial type ventilation mask,as seen in the video. Plan a minimum of a full 48 hours to complete the project. There is a reason this was shot at very high speed video. The time spent on each task should have been provided, as well as the the total hours to complete the project. This would give you a realistic time frame before you attempt to take on this task.
Very nicely done. I am thinking of doing this, but have some rust around the drain. I'll need to remove the rust but not sure what needs to be done after that. Does it need to be filled with something before doing the process in your video? Thanks.
I would use a wire brush to clean the rust up then you can use the bathworks scratch and chip repair kit to fill any voids. After that dries then you can paint the tub. I have a link to the repair kit in the video description
While that powder blue would not be my first choice, i don't think i'd want to paint that classic tub. I think i would paint my bathroom to compliment it. Aside from the work involved, it's cool to have something different than the same old white tub everyone has. Now if it was a goldenrod tub? THAT would actually be pretty fun.
I did. Mine with plain ole house primer and latex paint and worked great and holding. Did shower walls at my other house the same and did a granite look and polyunsaturated it and a kitchen counter top and still going after 3 yrs.
@@The1Music2MyEars yep, our tub is white and we had it reenamled white because it was full of little rust spots. Within a month it started peeling around the drain. Even being white on white it looks crappy.
I liked the video! One thing confuses me though: In other similar videos they tend to scrub and prepare the tub - considerably - before beginning the project? Is there any reason you didn't do any scrubbing or other preparation before you started? Do you get the same results? As durable? Thanks again for the video! I'm going to resurface my neighbor's tub while he's gone at work this week. He leaves his back window open, and I think I can get in there.
I'm glad you like the video! I scrubbed and scraped the surface for a couple hours until I couldn't find anything else to take off. Once it's fully clean you don't need to keep scrubbing.
@@BearMountainBuilds i think its amazing you don't need to keep scrubbing. Other videos show a lot of preparation and scrubbing, your no scrub no prep method will save me at least a couple hours. I want to get this completely done before my neighbor gets home from work and saving time on the prep work like this will really help! Thanks again !
Could not tell from the video. Being a DIY, my worry is whether it shows the unevenness if my painting itself is not that good? Do you think two coatings are better? In your case, can you tell the any blueness at all? Thank you.
As long as you don’t go too heavy on the top surface there will not be any unevenness. If you put too much on the top it will flow down the sides and can cause some very slight waves. Overall it self flattens very well
Thank you so much. This is very encouraging. Liked the blue tub but love the white. I have a green tub with yellow and black tile which I love. Pretty sure white is what I want for the tub. You have given me the confidence to go for it. God bless you. ❤️
Curious if you would recommend also replacing the drain kit so you have new looking chrome? Couldnt tell from the video but it looked like your drain kit looked old - Thx - great video
I don’t really like messing with old drain’s because they can easily break then you’re calling a plumber. I’d rather just clean the drain to make it look nice again
Don't do it! I was an expert bathtub refinisher. I had my own company for many years. It did this from 1980 until 2015. I charged over $200 to strip bathtubs once they've been painted and were failing. If the surface isn't prepared right and the right material isn't used and it isn't applied with spray equipment it looks terrible it doesn't last and fails and falls apart. Every time. You have to use hydra fluoric acid to etch the bathtub. HF. If you don't handle it right it will kill you. Get a professional. Someone who really knows what they're doing. It's worth the money. Otherwise you're going to have to strip it all off. Paint stripper is highly poisonous. And it will destroy your floors and walls and everything around the bathtub.
@@BearMountainBuilds It will last about a year. Maybe a little more maybe a little less. Water will get under it and you'll have bubbles and it will start peeling off in chunks and start going down the drain then it's done for. I don't do that stuff anymore. No more bathtub refinishing for me man. It's really really hard on your body. The chemicals just ruin you. But it is lucrative and it's a good business as long as you're really careful with the chemicals. You have to have a supplied air respirator that pumps fresh air from outside to your face and keep it off your skin no solvents, none, they will eat up your liver. I did my shower walls here in my house back in 2001. They still look brand new. If it's done correctly my professional it will last forever.
I was considering trying this in an older upstairs bathroom but I will definitely take your advice and hire a professional! There are a lot of things we can DIY to save money, but I'm not interested in spending double to fix what sounds like a messy and costly mistake. Not taking the chance! My brother had his professionally done and it is holding up great. Appreciate you taking the time to explain and yes, people do read the comments ;)
@@robertlee3 I agree. I refinished a shower once in a bathroom that I didnt want to gut and replace the stall. It looked good when I finished but I could tell that it wouldnt take much harsh cleaning chemicals before it stated to look bad. The prep was horrendous. I would have been time and money ahead to just replace the shower. I priced all the products that he uses in this video and it comes up to around $220. You can buy a new cheap tub for around $230 or a complete surround and tub for about $280 and these will last several years.
Great video, thanks! I am going to repaint my claw foot tub, just because it has some scratches when I moved to a new house. I am going to use Ekopel though, it has no odor, and they have a roll on too. I don't want the fumes from the brand you used. How is it holding up after a year?
As a 25 year professional bathtub refinisher, I can count on one hand the number of DIY bathtub painting jobs I've seen that would pass even the lightest scrutiny. Even the best looking jobs never lasted. They peel in a year, and I add on a $100 charge to take the rest off and start over. Plus, this guy made it TWICE as hard to tile the walls because he painted the tub first. Now that tiler has to be super careful do not damage the fresh bathtub with tools, tile, and grout. But go ahead. Try to diy it. Those kits are a scam that's been around for decades.
Just fyi this is not diy and it will not last. Not everything you see in UA-cam will work people. I tried this first time a it was a disaster. Ended up hiring a pro! And it cost me a lot more since they had to remove all that stuff before.
I did 3 tub/showers about 8 years ago. 2 of them I used appliance epoxy spray paint , and one was the 2 part epoxy for tubs. They were all still looking good when I sold my house a few months ago. The roll on tub stuff was a lot easier, but the spray epoxy (from Walmart) looked factory smooth, but was a lot harder because I had to tape off EVERYTHING.
Fantastic video, I was gonna have someone come in a do my main bathroom, the previous owners used alot of bath salts and the cast iron tub has some pitting and exposed rust spots, with the small rust and pitting just on surface do you think a 60 year old man can still do the job? Great Video once again, love your work!
The bathworks kit gives you the specific cleaning instructions. There are certain cleaners you’re not supposed to use. So far it’s held up great and I’ve seen it last 5+ years.
This looks amazing.Maybe a ignorant question but, how well does the paint do between cleanings. Will it need special cleaning instructions like no scrubing?
There are special cleaning instructions that tell you not to use certain aggressive chemicals. I don’t have them off hand but you should be able to Google it
It’s going to be difficult to keep clean ... eventually the tub will have buildup of grime from soap and body and hair oils. But it’ll look beautiful when newly painted but be prepared to do the process every 1-2 years.

I have a blue and grey tub where could I post to sell?
It looked like shit. 😂
The best video I ever seen, as instructions had to do it yourself. Thanks for sharing.
I remember helping my dad do this years ago. I don't know what the paint was, but it was wicked stuff! I could almost see the fumes :D
You really want a mask and good ventilation
@@BearMountainBuilds haha yes.
*Wow! Wonderful job! The tub is so crisp and sparkling!!!* 🌠
Thanks for the demo and tips.
Your music is soo much better than most videos.
i moved into a rental where the bathtub was installed incorrectly and had a low spot right before the drain.
Wow same situation I have. I like the auto primer idea
Looks absolutely fantastic. I just wonder if it will keep its shine and good looks
over some time. How do you think it will look 5 years down the road ??
I'm coming up on two years now and it still is in perfect condition. So I expect it to be doing great at 5
nicely done! I didn't know such a thing was possible as an option to either replacing the tub or installing a cover over it. I'd like to do this to mine
I paid a professional to come in and do it … you just have to be careful not to use grit type cleaners like Vim to clean the tub. I just use dish soap
This is an awesome video your instructions are precise. What if I want to paint my tub another color. Im thinking black or navy blue?
The brand I used only has 4 colors but you could probably reach out to them and see if it’s possible to add other color dyes
Youre an awesome teacher😅
I didn't know that they had these kits available I tried to patch up some things that I had in my metal bathtub and it started to rust so I have a lot of these black little dots from wear and tear also from cleaning it's starting to rust a little bit so I was looking for a refinishing kit so yours look a lot easier to use and the color is nice and white and bright and it's shiny and what I like about it is that you don't have to take the tub out
Very helpful, BMB! Thanks much. I will be doing same in a month from now. Glad I saw this. Cheers.
Lovely. You simplified the process.. only concern is how do you clean the tub and how long will the paint last?
No dura mucho,y si está oxidado menos, vuelve a aparecer

While very satisfying to see this kind of low cost update, I can't help but be mesmerized by a man cleaning a bath tub, this too was very satisfying.
Ah ! That's kinda sexist...I'm a guy and I wouldn't let my girl clean our tub...I do the laundry and other things that woman are assumed to do...I was raised right !!!

Thanks Bradley cooper!
The blue color looks way better imo
To each their own. The fun of decorating!
Thank you for showing us. How to fix our bath shower
I’m going to refinish my bathtub and shower walls in a month. I’m not sure if I want to try this kit or the rustoleum one. I feel like I would screw this one up! Yours looks amazing. I would’ve recommended removing the drain cover, however. It could be a source of chipping based on my brother’s experience with his tub that was professionally recoated.
@@kathleenelwood6839 I do not coat my tub yet. I realized it was going to smell and it’s winter here. I wouldn’t be able to ventilate the house. Maybe this summer.
Haven't tried them myself, but the rustoleum kit has alot more negative reviews on the home depot site. It seems like the bathworks one has worked better for most people
Did you refinish your tub yet? Curious on how it went if did.
@@Jerk_ANC I decided not to because I was so worried about it peeling and I don’t have time to deal with it. I just ended up using white grout pens to turn my brown wall tile grout to white and it made my bathroom look better. That was months ago and they are still white!
@@Millasoaps good idea. Thank u
I enjoyed your video. I'm renting my house and the maintenance people painted my bath tub. Now it is peeling and they don't want to prepare it. I'm going to keep looking at your video and try to do it myself. Thank You!
All that work to turn it white? I would have kept it blue. That blue looks lit 😎

Thanks for your help I’m planning to paint my bathtub and with your help looks more easier
Excellent!
Just want to know if the paint won’t peel of with the water.
My paint is still going strong. I’ll be making a 1 year update video in the next couple weeks
I did the whole thing in about 5-6 hours, but let it cure for about 30
Very nicely done.
@@BearMountainBuilds Thanks
While that powder blue would not be my first choice, i don't think i'd want to paint that classic tub. I think i would paint my bathroom to compliment it. Aside from the work involved, it's cool to have something different than the same old white tub everyone has. Now if it was a goldenrod tub? THAT would actually be pretty fun.
I did. Mine with plain ole house primer and latex paint and worked great and holding. Did shower walls at my other house the same and did a granite look and polyunsaturated it and a kitchen counter top and still going after 3 yrs.
Latex wall primer and paint on a bathtub? Ok whatever

@@gordonnewton4832 Why?
@@rvc9876 I dropped 1 item in my tub and it eventually led to it peeling more and more
@@The1Music2MyEars yep, our tub is white and we had it reenamled white because it was full of little rust spots. Within a month it started peeling around the drain. Even being white on white it looks crappy.
It's a few months early, but are you willing to provide an update?
Overall it self flattens very well
I have that identical bathtub, but mine originally came in white, and it will remain white, but it's definitely time to do this to it as well.
Thank you so much. This is very encouraging. Liked the blue tub but love the white. I have a green tub with yellow and black tile which I love. Pretty sure white is what I want for the tub. You have given me the confidence to go for it. God bless you. ❤️
Great tutorial. I'm looking forward to that follow up video.

So far mine has been doing great! So we’ll see how long it lasts!
You did a great job and white is more modern and better looking.
Great video, thanks! I am going to repaint my claw foot tub, just because it has some scratches when I moved to a new house. I am going to use Ekopel though, it has no odor, and they have a roll on too. I don't want the fumes from the brand you used. How is it holding up after a year?
Still going strong! You can check out my update video on my channel.
Excellent very helpful for a DIY'er 👍
👍great job, am looking forward to paint my green tub😃❤ pretty neat.
Mine still looks great after a year!
We had our tub painted and it started pealing off with in a year.
Is this cast iron tub?
@@veramachinskiy2992 Yes, it's porcelain over cast iron.
Since he’s remodeling his bathroom, he’ll be careful with the rest of the remodeling.
GREAT DIRECTION TO RESTORE THE BATHTUB, ONE QUESTION, CAN I PUT ON ADDTIONAL COAT? DID I NEED TO SAND LIGHTLY? OR JUST PUT AN ATTIOINAL COAT?
How sad to get rid of the blue.
Yea I get it. It’s like painting beautiful stained oak cabinets institution gray. Lol.
This looks great. I have one question: does the paint require special cleaners to clean after use of the tub? Thank you!
Nope, you just can't use abrasive cleaners on it
I like it in blue better.
There’s no accounting for taste, which is why color change kits like this exist!
Yea me too! It’s my favorite color. 😊
As time goes on, it becomes impossible to match new items with old colors, like trying to find blue toilet or sink.
Are you over 70 years old?
The new styles suck. It's all white, on white, on slightly less white out there.
Me too! My tub is green and so happy I discovered your video!!! Thanks
Ok, just saying…I LOVE the blue tub!! White is BORING!!!
Just fyi this is not diy and it will not last. Not everything you see in UA-cam will work people. I tried this first time a it was a disaster. Ended up hiring a pro! And it cost me a lot more since they had to remove all that stuff before.
It’s still working on my tub!
@@BearMountainBuilds u getting paid to market this product lol stop capping
You definently can do this! I hate working on my knees so I would recommend some knee pads
I did this today after watching your video and following the steps but mine turned out splotchy on the outside 😭 any ideas on how to fix this?
How's the paint's resistance to regular scrubbing and cleaning soaps? How does it stand up to the time test? I'd like to know please.
The bathworks kit gives you the specific cleaning instructions. There are certain cleaners you’re not supposed to use. So far it’s held up great and I’ve seen it last 5+ years.
Don’t do it.. get a new tub.

From what i can see it looks impeccable 👌 nice work bro!
This looks amazing.Maybe a ignorant question but, how well does the paint do between cleanings. Will it need special cleaning instructions like no scrubing?
There are special cleaning instructions that tell you not to use certain aggressive chemicals. I don’t have them off hand but you should be able to Google it
@@BearMountainBuilds thank you for your response 😊
It’s going to be difficult to keep clean ... eventually the tub will have buildup of grime from soap and body and hair oils. But it’ll look beautiful when newly painted but be prepared to do the process every 1-2 years.
