I never learned about style over fashion. We always tried to follow trends and never had anything to wear! Style is so much more frugal, more comfortable (because it's mine), and stress-reducing! Everything I own works well for my life and works together! Such great lessons!
My mother taught me all these lessons back in the 1960's and also sent me to a class that one of the department store offered for 12-14 year old girls. I will never forget what was taught. The teacher included in the class what quality workmanship looked like and why it was better to have few well made clothes which last and can be styled together for many choices. Christine

Love your simple, direct and simplistic guidance. With all the marketing ads it’s hard to get to the core of my wardrobe style. I can now strategically clean my closet and build my wardrobe.
Well said, Marie-Anne. We can't go wrong if we stick to these five essential elements. We will always have something to wear and will be well turned out every time we leave the house. Thank you!
YES. YES. YES. I am 70. I live in the UK for more than 20 years, but I was born in Russia, and, despite the Iron Curtain, we tried to catch every single word of fashion from France and follow the French style. I know all your rules and taught them to my daughter. Neve tired to say that you are amazing! Thank you.
My mom always thought me to feel the fabrics and look how the sewings were made. She has a very refined style and good eye since forever. All you say reminds me of her.
I absolutely adore your pale pink silk blouse with the strong vertical line created by the tie. I have always gone for classics. I still have/wear clothing from 30 years ago because a black wool high-waisted pencil skirt never goes out of style.
Yes to all five. I have a blush pink silk blouse similar to the one you’re wearing. Bought it in 1987 and wore it once again in 2012. Still in my closet.
Neutral colors and simplicity lend themselves to an elegant look. I can't afford expensive pieces right now but I have noticed that even if I buy something inexpensive from h&m I can treat it like it is high quality in the way I care for it and it lasts a lot longer. I loved this video!
It's something we need to teach our daughters. Fashion comes and goes, but I've had my own personal style since I started purchasing my own clothes ( thankyou mum )
@@MarieAnneLecoeur Merci Mme. Lecoeur.I have been following French style since I was 11, (I'm 50) when I had my first French teacher from Paris! She was so incredibly chic! I tried to emulate her in every way! Then in college, I purchased a book, by Conde Nast, How to Dress Like French Woman, and of course studied Mlle. Chanel, as well as other French style icons. To that end, I've always been complimented on my sense of style, and even imitated as well! I owe it all to mes soeurs Françaises! I'm so happy to have found your channel!!! 💜
Style over Fashion! Growing up my mother taught me about the other four rules /tips for a beautiful, classic wardrobe. I never really understood Style. Now I get it! Thank you Marie Anne for bringing these Tips together! I have re newed many of the classic ideas from my mom and now this. #1 Style Over Fashion! Love it, Love You!
1) I want that lily silk blouse!! It is my favorite one! 2) I wish I had learned earlier to not care about what people say. I’ve always dressed on the side of Style and “dressy” and was constantly mocked for it and because of that I didn’t wear what I wanted because I didn’t want to be made fun of. I love all of your tips they are all very important! The only prints I tend to like are on dresses (a very clean floral at the hem or strategically placed on the garment ) and a good striped sweater!! Also Kiss is my favorite! I cannot count how many times I use this acronym!!
Bonjour Marie-Anne! I wish I had learned all of this years ago although have have caught on recently! I guess it's never too late!! Love your enthusiasm!! It's contagious!! Merci!!
I love the blouse you are wearing i this video! To me it sums up what you teach - understated, classic, neutral color, nice details - tie, tie pin, & small chain. I WANT ONE TOO!
Style over fashion always❤️Thank you Marie-Anne. I enjoy the simplicity of French style because the ladies wear the clothes, the clothes don't wear or overwhelm them
(Melanie here) I wish I would have seen these videos years ago! It would have saved me so much stress. Well, it is never too late to learn. So, I am really appreciating your instruction. The points that I will remember from this are: buy neutral colors, quality over quantity, and avoid buying clothes with patterns. This will help me be more selective, frugal and confident when I shop and when I style.
Your advice is the same as my mother always said and I tried to instill these ideals in my children. It was a great reminder of the way I should dress. It’s easy to get caught up in the fashion end instead of style and classic. I work at a thrift shop right now so not all my clothes are the classic style that I would be buying if I didn’t get most of them where I work but your advice made me realize having a full closet isn’t the wisest decision. I can remove a lot of the items and I will look better and feel better about my wardrobe. So thanks for the reminder.
Bonjour! What a wonderful video that emphasizes the Gestalt of dressing well rather than just describing the clothing itself. I remember watching a documentary hosted by Carla Bruni. She was dressed in blue jeans that were worn at the waist with a beautifully simple belt and a crisp white shirt and ballet flats. She looked like a million dollars. The elegance of her simplicity was such a refreshing change from the women I view every day in the workforce where I live. Your advice reminds me so much of my mother, who had impeccable taste. I still have a navy blue Tregere coat with a stunning red silk lining that she presented to me as a gift when I was in my 20's: It's a work of art. I do so love the way the French ladies dress. You have that certain je ne sais quoi that looks easy but is very difficult to duplicate.
Thanks for responding Marie-Anne! I would like to add that in the video you didn’t mention what I think is the main one - FIT! If an item fits perfectly then you can get away with it being cheap. (Similarly you can get away with cheap make up if the colour suits you perfectly.) I love your videos and I’ve really upgraded my style since discovering them! Best wishes, Janice.
I love your videos Marie-Anne, and I learn so much from you. I have bought a couple of blue tops, you are a good influence! I watched your video about comments some people have left, don't take any notice, Marie-Ann, none of us can please everyone all the time, or in some cases, even part of the time. There are so many of us who love you and what you do, and the wonderful advice you provide, thank you!
I’ve been addicted to florals for ages but recently have been eliminating them from my wardrobe in favor of basic colors and more classics. I’ve been shopping more thoughtfully and replacing the “fast fashion” pieces in my wardrobe. And am getting far more compliments on my clothing.
Great review. I agree with those who said all five because each one is important and together they give us a winning strategy to always look well dressed and stylish.
I love your style lessons especially KISS. I have always loved turtleneck sweaters and I have them in neutral colors. It's always in vogue year after year. Thanks again Madame Marie-Anne.🇫🇷👗💄👡
Hello again! I usually pair them with neutral colored trousers or skirts. With or without a blazer and turtlenecks always shows off my statement jewelry with finesse.
Thank you, Marie Anne. It all sounds so true to what I like. I loved it that you were taken to shops and taught these things as a young girl. Having these sound basis up her sleeve a young woman can build and develop her personal style. Sadly, nobody does it here. I did try and at the time thought my daughter didn't listen but now I can see some of it did sink in. 😀
I’m still learning. Color was huge for me. Something you knew intuitively however the book color me beautiful confirmed so many choices. Style, classics, quality and simplicity all are great basics to take shopping. I really like the format. Great work. 😊
I look at color first, then style, quality, etc. If it's not my color I move on--I look great in black, navy, grey and white anyway! I am a label reader. Plus my mother taught me not to do free advertising, another words, don't wear clothes with the designer's name or symbol showing. She believed it was not a classy look.
What superb advice for all ages.
How much money and waste would be saved by following these tips.
Thank you so much.
