@@vincentwierda5473 Yeah, I actually think Pompeii 2016 beats Pulse...but that solo from Pulse is just special. In all cases, the live versions are superior to the album. Fuck, oh well.
i would argue that the solo of pompeii 2016 beats pulse because gilmour is aging like good old wine ... BUT: the pulse experience is special because of the sensational show elements.
First time I heard this live version, I was stoned asf. I almost started crying, made me so fuckin emotional. Still does. And I still listen to it when I get High, as it only gets better lol
Gilmour must have been 70 years old there. Voice still great. I love his accent, I love it when the lights blaze at the AHHHHH. .you’ll feel no more AHHHHHHHHH
Great call. Don’t think there is a bad Comfortably Numb performance, but Live at Pompeii is classic. Listen to the crowd just before he goes into that epic solo...they know they are about be taken on a journey.
Not only is this epic but may possibly be the most historic performance in music history, this theatre hasn’t been open to a public performance since 79AD 🤷♂️ David Gilmour 🙏
Interesting trivia. The guitar strap ( with the “Xs”) Gilmour is using used to belong to Jimi Hendrix. Gilmour’s wife bought it for him at an auction for his 60th birthday.
This was the first live performance in this amphitheater since 79AD. The 72 performance was for a video, there was no audience. It's incredible that they gave Gilmour the privilege of being the first modern concert. Gilmour is the greatest guitarist in music history. He doesn't need theatrics, he just plays and people's lives change when they hear him. I still thing that the 1994 performance is king, but this show is in a photo finish with Pulse!! This wasn't Floyd, but Damn they were good!!Thank you David!!
The meaning of the song is closely linked with the story of the album The Wall. This song is a bridge from when rock artist Pink is at the lowest, have become comfortably numb from all the pain he has from life and is totally strung out on drugs, till he fights back and tear down the wall. The verse is the doctor that comes in to get him going for the show, then Pink talks back within himself.
True, but there was no audience back in the early 70s. I think this was the first performance with an audience in this venue since the Gladiators did battle.
John McCullough um 🤔 there was no audience when Pink Floyd did their “documentary” live performance there so yes this is the 1st time since 79ad that a band actually performed in front of of an audience
@Difference of Opinion David Gilmour actually did give his live concert in Pompeii in the Ancient Roman arena there. It was the first public performance of any kind since the destruction of Pompeii in AD 79, nearly 1,950 years ago ! This version, I think, is the very best of many great performances of his and Pink Floyd. I saw them live in outdoor concert in the summer of 1992 (I think), in Hamburg, Germany. Incredible, absolutely incredibly mind blowing. None better!🙌
The song is not about drugs.. Back in the 70s, PF was doing a concert in LA and Roger Waters had what he found out later to be Hepatitis. A Venue doctor was called and he gave Roger a shot which he later recalled to be the worst 2 hours of his life. But he finished the set and later wrote about it, and the result was this masterpiece
Nice! I’ve only seen reactions to the Pulse concert and also the studio version. I’ve been waiting for someone to react to the Pompei version. Both Pulse and Pompei are epic. I honestly can’t say which one I prefer, so I won’t. Thx for this reaction.
Your right both awesome, I watched the Pompeii 1st had goosebumps all over, then I watched the pulse one and must admit a few tears leaked out absolutely monumental, the pulse one had more feeling and soul I felt so thst one tops it for me.
All members of the most successful lineup of Pink Floyd are still alive and quite active except for Richard Wright who died in the mid-2000s. Nick Mason the original drummer is currently on tour in the United States. And founding member Rodger Waters has just wrapped up a spectacularly staged world tour where he performed basically the entire Animals album as well as other Floyds greatest hits.
Mmm, i dont have a difference of opinion here. I bought the wall back in the seventies, and do not remember it being as good as this Pompei gig. Good video, enjoyed watching it, and yes, my first thought was wow on that geetar.😎
The version from their Delicate Sound of Thunder tour is also very good. (I may even like more than the one on Pulse) This version is definitely a good one. David clearly ditched some of the effects here and the solo is a little raw due to that (to my ears) but also very direct and pure. I love it too. But then again, I love everything he ever did.
This is David Gilmour solo, so he's the only Floyd there. Syd Barrett (first album) died 2006 (last album 1970 and lived mostly reclusive after that painting). Keyboard player Richard Wright died in 2008. Gilmour still at it solo, and have released two great solo albums. Founding member Rado Klose (aka Bob Klose) plays guitar on those two albums. Drummer Nick Mason has his own band (together with Gay Pratt, the bass player here), The Saucerful Of Secrets, who plays exclusive Floyd songs pre Dark side Of The Moon. Roger Waters is also still active with his solo stuff.
I think the Pulse solo is better, but the Pompeii version has much higher and richer sound quality, which made the guitar sound really crisp. I usually prefer listening to the Pompeii version just for that.
People always refer to PULSE. And of course especially for the time (mid 90s) the concerts blew stage lighting standards off the roof! But in my opinion, this Pompeii version is the best version ever of Comfortably Numb + Solo. Also, I think the Pulse version is a little too slow! Just slightly. The certain drive or flow at correct speed is missing.
Please check out David Gilmour’s song On An Island on the album of the same name, a great album of his solo work. Also check out Pink Floyd live in Pompeii doing Echoes in 1971. The original drummer, Nick Mason, is still around and so is Roger Waters.
It was great to see your reaction. The lyrics on this were written by Roger Waters and were influenced by his own feelings of being isolated and withdrawing from the fans, to the point were he was unable to perform one night. A doctor was called gave him a shot of something (knowbody seems to know for sure what he was given), which left him 'comfortably numb' and the show went on, with Waters feeling like he had when he was ill as a child.
original pink floyd: syd barret (died pretty early), nick mason, richard wright, roger waters and david gilmour. as far as i know only gilmour, waters and mason are still alive. pink floyd is besides bruce springsteen my favorite music for almost more than 30 years by now. sry 4 my bad english
fair enough, personal taste. i love the solo in this 2016 version even more than pulse. to me, it´s like gilmour ages and gets better like good old red wine.
While the Pulse version is good, it my opinion that the Delicate Sound of Thunder version is better. As is this one. I have seen the AMLOR, Division Bell and both Gilmour solo tours. It makes zero difference when he's playing live.
Masherbrum I'm going to have to check out the Delicate sound of Thunder ( what an awesome phrase by the way) , I can only imagine what seeing that live must have been like my friend, must have been amazing. If you have any other Gilmour solos would be awesome to hear your top 5.
