- Richard Hammond has been waiting a long time to test out his newly-tuned Subaru Impreza from the Grand Tour. After 2023 was spent building Martin the Subaru into a 530bhp, all-wheel drive, manual monster, Richard is finally thrown the keys to take it for a spin on his favourite Welsh Highland road.

Richard, I've owned 2 WRX's. I loved them both. The first was a year older than this one. The second was a 2015. Both were the best driving experiences of my life. The focus, the heightened awareness, of driving these cars was joyous. Thank you for capturing the spirit of the experience!
You should do cars & coffee events at the smallest cog in the summer!
I totally want to see you drive a Triple Rotary RX-7 Hammond, would be a magical time, behind a bespoked magical car of such character, such fun, such exquisite drivability, a purist enthusiasts dream machine... :)
THIS IS WHAT THIS CHANNEL SHOULD BE. It brings back the Top Gear magic. Just 20-30 minutes of chilling with Jeremy, Richard or Captain slow in literally anything. It could be a shopping trolley. Please please please more of this ❤❤❤
I really hope this comment gets read because it’s spot on, I remember genuinely hoping for this video after the last one where he got handed the keys and walked through the car
New top gear presenters can't even drift a super car on a race track and they're what 20 years younger? Idk it's just sad. BBC was more worried about what they wanted vs what the audience wanted.
Yes yes yes!!!
Agree but that's because you're objectively correct and you can't disagree. It's just true
Totally agree!!!
This is literally like watching a Top Gear road test, the framing, the pacing, the scripting, the music. We NEED more of these! James could do his Alpine properly, Jeremy could do his GTV6 properly, and Hammond can do more of his mad cars! EXCELLENTLY put together!!!
I second that
Yes, that! I do hope that after the grand tour ends we will every now and then see the 3 on here. Even if it's just a video where they do "the news" together.
And yes i fully understand that they've been doing this for 300 years and at some point everyone wants (or needs) to slow down into retirement. I get that. But still.. It'd be nice.
I'd say reviewing their own cars could even improve on the Top Gear formula if that's possible. You can tell Hammond LOVES this car, just the same as Jeremy's old tests on stuff like that coach built Alfa, or his segment about Lancias. It's a genuinely beautiful thing to see this kind of outpouring of passion for a car, we more of this.
yes, please.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!! If only!! This would be amazing.
Just seeing Hammond in a car talking about it the way he does, his analogies, the words, the adjectives used to describe the feeling of this car, it really brings back the sheer nostalgia and joy of watching the Top Gear of old. Appreciate DriveTribe for bringing us this.
As a 20+ year owner of an STI, who has thought about selling it a dozen times along the way... this motivates me to keep it another 20 years. Iconic!
I hope there’s a cure soon ❤️😊
Never sell it I sold my wrx a few years back and I'm gonna get another
Don’t sell it. You will definitely regret it. I sold my 06 sti in 2011 and i missed it so much i got 06 wrx which i also sold..now i have 05 sti 😁
@@milli_on4451 2005 is probably my favorite year, I'd hold on to it! I got a 2004 at release and just wish I had the upgraded 5x114 wheels/hubs that came a year later. No issues with it on the track or autocross, though - it came with a free SCCA membership at the time! I assume Subaru doesn't still offer that... 😆
My 2008 STI is a foot longer JDM 50th anniversary special Outback 2.5XT with half the power of Hammond's beast. But it still gives that clawing into the tarmac feeling, especially from a standing start. From a T intersection. In the wet.
This video is my childhood watching the old show, 20s with the Grand Tour and now 30s.
Properly happy for Hammond, loving the wholesome nature, and the laughs obviously!
Ive watched the old one since I was 4, I would get up early on a Saturday morning watch as many as I could before everyone else woke up, back when it was on Netflix.
I am now 18 and it still puts a smile on my face, this trio are a small part of my existence.
13 yrs and 3 motors later, I still look back when I walk away.
This exactly this! I just had to do my first motor rebuild on my STI spending money I wasn’t planning on but I still love that car. I always look back when I walk away and always smile getting in.
"We are going to have a lot of fun together. A lot." Brought a tear to my eye. That's the kind of passion we have as enthusiasts. You don't go places in your car. You and your car go places together. I am so glad you are out enjoying time with Martin. I am sure Martin is too.
You made the tears in my eyes grow bigger. Well said.
More of this please. He’s spot on that not everybody gets it, and for some (most?) a car is just a transportation appliance. But for those of us who do, times like these behind the wheel are part of what makes life worth living. Many thanks, Richard.
the sound of this car makes me feel like i've died and gone to heaven 🥹
why is youtube just… here
Is that before or after you censor videos that have opinions you want to shut down?
Thx for stopping by. Glad to have you with us
Worlds apart from the current plastic sponge that's offered new. This was living. It's real driving and emotion.

This video got me in my feelings, I just lost my project car that I had put a lot of time into, that made me feel alive when I drove it (someone hit me totaling the car). It makes me happy to see hamster drive a car that makes him smile.
Maybe in the future you’ll build another. What car was it? No doubt there were nice memories and there will be more with the future project
The car did its job, you got crashed into and survived it. If you want to, build it up again, doesn't matter if the insurance write off is tiny. It's the car you want to be driving.
It was nothing fancy, but it was an NC miata, was building it into a spec miata. @xevious2963
@@simonyoungjr3816that was special for you, build a new one mate, and blandt it on the internet. Do you have a build tread
@simonyoungjr3816 sorry for your loss brother, that's always hard. I hope you find something else soon that invokes the same feelings!
What an absolutely immersive drive, along with the commentary of one of the 3 most important car people on earth. Hammond's way with words is just unreal.
Agree on the first part for sure!
But who are your 3 most important car people in the world?
Richard Hammond
Chris Harris
Mighty Car Mods (I know, it's cheating, it's two + friends, but as it stands, MCM wouldn't be MCM without either 1 of them)
IMO, Clarkson and May have moved on from cars. I don't even know what May does anymore.
@@himaro101- May does travel programmes. Decent ones.
Richard if you READ THIS, congratulations you’ve just cemented your legacy as the greatest car reviewer of all time, in perhaps one of the greatest legendary cars of all time.. superb video, felt like peak top gear review.. excellent.. this is what we want Richard ! Your a living legend!
Amazing to see him drive this again
Ikr it’s only taken them 2 years 🤣
And not crash!
Unlike that last video 💀💀
@@salami99
Random skull face emojis... You must be a gen z.
Every STI owner has a LOT of fun always not just Richard 🙃
Regular WRX owners have a bit of fun as well.
I agree @@wscott9779
Yeah everything Hammond said about the car that it has it’s own personality, it’s planted down to the ground to the point you feel like your on rails, and it feels like what you’d expect when you think of performance because it does everything and more and until you drive one you probably won’t really even understand it because I know I didn’t and from the moment I got it my expectations for it were so much lower than how great it ended up being
And dads of STI owners.( me) My daughter has 1. Front mount intercooler and stuff. So much fun to drive.
I have a regular WRX, it's such a drivers car.
I grew up watching Richard, but now I’m older I can appreciate how good he actually is with words. He does such a good job of explaining how something feels in a precise, but poetic way.
When he said “and I suspect you are too” in regard to being the type of person to want a car to be cartoonish, you actually feel like he’s involving YOU, not just speaking about himself and how it feels to him.
As an audience we WANT WANT WANT this type of content. Please keep doing stuff like this💙💙
I am always so impressed by Hammond's effortless delivery. He delivered that passionate monolog from start to finish and it came out like a beautifully scripted drama but it felt anything but scripted. Hammond is a master of presentation - best in the trio (and this coming from an engineer whose a James May fan). I just can't get enough of Hammond's presentations. So eloquent, so graceful and always passionate. Bravo, dude!
I've fallen in love with how Hammond review cars. Again.
I love the silly Top Gear we had but we all forgot why the trio love cars and how good they can express their emotions and connections with cars. That was a brilliant review! MORE PLEASE and a big thank you!
This has to be one of Richard's best pieces to camera in a long time. He defintely needs to get back into car reviews again. Such a talent with words.
Towards the end of the video I felt like I was watching an episode of the old top gear again with the music, charisma and everything it almost brought a tear to my eye. Miss those days
At the end I was waiting for the audience to clap as it cuts back to the studio..😂😂
Except that it was Richard in a Subaru, the rest of this clip kind of felt like that season ending clip that Jeremy did in the Aston Martin V12 Vantage.
How can Richard be the best car reviewer I have ever seen, what's it been 20+ years since peak Top Gear and still Richard is the GOAT, nobody comes close... emotion, connection to the audience, so compelling you cant stop watching, draws your undivided attention.. amazing work every time.
Harris
After all these years watching these guys I actually feel connected Hammond feels like my long distance uncle or something lol its almost magic when u put him in front of a camera
Magic when any of those 3 are on screen
Kinda brought a tear to my eye this did. Was like watching TopGear again, the camera angles, the analogies of the car, the music choice and the reactions Richard makes. All we want is more videos like this with the Trio before they retire for good 🔥🙏
Loved that! The car, the style, the cinematography and a classic piece of Hammond.
I love Subarus. I've had such a hard time trying to convert my feelings into words, but Hammond perfectly nails the feeling of driving a Subaru, no other car can compare the feeling of one.
My daily commuter car is my beloved STI. It's impossible for me to start it up without a silly grin. Nothing fixes a tough day at the office quite like walking out to the parking lot and driving it home. And yours is just about the most perfect build I've ever seen. Please make some more videos with it.
Sold my daily STi after driving it 10 years for a car just as fast, nicer inside and more practical and all I can think about is getting it back. The character of the car and mechanical beauty is one of a kind.
This is like me but with my b4 legacy nothing pleases me more than driving that car
Same here.
@@2008tmpI miss my STi every day
Didn't have an STi but did have a pre Facelift Prodrive Performance Pack GC8 and a 'stock' post Facelift GC8... two of my absolute favourite cars!
This just took me back 10+ years to Sunday night top gear - thank you
That exhaust is probably one of the nicest sounding ones I've ever heard on an Impreza, the whole thing just looks and sounds like a true rally car. Good job guys, keep this sort of thing up!
Genuinely shed a tear - lovely car so happy you kept it! Gives me memories watching early Top Gear growing up, thank you Richard
nothing beats a Subaru and the feeling you get driving one
Well... That feeling when it inevitably blows up does 😋
or rust on them :/ @@mattwillow7
What about an Evo?
as an ex evo owner I disagree
Lol I've rebuilt a 2.5L
The truth hurts@@mattwillow7
So good to see he Hammond hasn't lost the ability to make you feel emotional towards a car, bringing that feeling to me sitting on the other side of the screen but feeling like I'm sitting there with him enjoying every second top video 👏👏
This felt so natural that I was waiting for an applause and a cut back to either a tent or a BBC studio
The genuine heart to heart he gives us a peak at between him and the car is really something special and what made top gear and the grand tour so special.
Gorgeous car, brilliantly improved.
Well done for not crashing Hammond :)
Just give him time.
In the old TG spirit "Richard Hammond, a hot Subaru and a wet, windy road - what could possibly go wrong?"
@@claudiopiccoliromera2646 I know right haha i was half expecting a little crash :D
This review really took me back to the old Top Gear days, More of this please!!
I’ve had my Hawkeye for just over a year, done a considerable amount of miles in that time and there isn’t a day where it doesn’t make me smile! Awesome cars, there’s nothing quite like it ❤️
there is something about men and cars, the two go so well with each other..Hammond feels that special connection with that car and the same goes for every dude on the gas pedal...whether you hate a car or love a car, its still amazing getting behind a wheel and going or a spin, it feels so mutual, it does what you do and takes you where you want, thats why we put so much cares fore cars, we just feel a thrill behind a wheel.
This video personaly touched my feelings, seeing a man like Richard Hammond a man that made my whole childhood awesome seeing in my childhood dream car smiling and loving it, it just hits me different. It got me emotional
I own a Subaru Impreza gc8 that has been completely restored. It was with it that I learned to drive fast . It belonged to my father who passed away 6 months ago. I don't think I'll ever sell it. Welcome to the Subie club Richard. Happy New Year.
I'm trying to buy an old Evo for the purpose of restoration. Hopefully I'll be able to pass it down like that.
Absolutely epic video. One of the best on Drivetribe. Proper emotional and very gripping. More of this please!
Georgous road and amazing backdrop and my God what a machine! I love the fact its pouring with rain but you can still drive at some speed. To see the kid, joy and emotion in Richards face is priceless! Its authentic and genuine reaction. Presenting this car brings it all out and that is one of the great 4cyl car of all time.
In the world of qtr mile runs, fastest acceleration, EV's or power you can't really safely use in the real world this is a breath of fresh air.
Great video. Enjoy and wishing a safe and fun year for the DriveTribe Team!
Watching this with Richard Hammond really felt like old times again. Just back to basics car reviews from one of the best automotive presenters in the modern era. Really enjoyed watching this and would love to see a lot more of this style. Well done!
My daily is a 500hp F80 M3 but my 05 STi gives me chills every time i take it out for a Sunday drive. Such a drivers car, no electrical gimmicks, no traction control, pure drivers car.
I loved this episode! This almost felt like watching Old TG back in the day, the production was wonderful. Well Done DT!
The last 2 minutes and 30 seconds is why I drive a modified 2004 subaru sti no matter how much pain it may cause me when I'm not in the seat
This review was so good and took me so far back into time that I thought it was going to cut back into a studio, with Jeremy wondering how fast it goes around a certain track 😂
Good for you Hammond, good for you. This video out of every episode of top gear and the grand tour hit me harder in the heart for some reason. A lot of depth to this video that not all may see. This is what it’s all about.
Driving an STI is truly a phenomenal experience, glad to see him enjoying it! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Subaru + Hammond combo is unbeatable. Look at the Africa special from 2013. Says it all
And I’m an Evo guy
It's okay, we have May.
I'm sure that's the B4560 road Llangynidr, awesome road 🏴
2 decades ago i remember hammond talking about getting the mother of all imprezas, and now he does, great to see, fast happy hamster
Best Hammond video in a long time. Sums up exactly why I love my STI, character. It’s not particularly fast but it’s about the feel and sounds. More videos like this please.
please continue to review your cars and future awesome cars... it really is a joy to see you talk about cars
Hamster is the best!! This is what we’ve been waiting for!!! Excellent work Richard!👏👏👏Great test Drive!!
Ritchard Hammond doing road tests again is the thing we need but we do not deserve. I love this video. BIG THANK YOU RITCHARD FOR ALL THOSE YEARS.
Your vids keep getting better and more slick, this is top tier content and much appreciated. I am inexplicably happy for Hammond that he's got Martin back, better then ever.
I'm glad it's up to your expectations Richard😊
Nostalgia. This brought me back. Amazing to see him behind the wheel of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI.
This has TG nostalgia. It brings about a sensation of the joy that Hammond has with cars, with presenting. Remembering how Hammond talked about Sabine Schmitz in the TG tribute video, the last few seconds of that video he says, and I quote: “ 'You watch those films with her in again and just watch her smile. Watch her expressions when she was driving right on the ragged edge, even in those moments she was happy to give in to the joy of it.”
Watch Richard’s face in this video. Watch the joy in his face, the passion in his voice and body language. You can’t fake that. And for every video he alone, or with the other two should decide to make, it will bring smiles to our faces to. Gotta love it :D
The fact that you can get that kind of a reaction from someone who's been on any form of crazy vehicle for the past couple of decades is nothing short of an achievement for the team that created that mosnter of a car! Amazing work! Cheers!
As if he's just pushing the limits of that car and heel-toeing. Never seen him do that and I've been watching him all my life. He's actually a certified driver 👏
Hammonds words, the videography and the style in which it was all put together gave me goose bumps and a big grin on my face. Well done this is the content we want!
Yes, the three of them need to get on again. Who are the fools who don't recognize that in TV land?
They are not interested in talent just diversity.
Top gear is no more due to incompetence.
This is possibly the greatest thing ever captured on camera. Great review of a mega car - I was lucky enough to own a Blob STI years ago, and since I got rid of it 9 years I've thought about little else except buying another, but kids and life keep getting in the way. This at least lets me enjoy the boxer burble vicariously until I buy another - much more of this please!
This is the best video I have ever watched on UA-cam 😍 Hammond face is just a look of pure joy the entire time, absolutely love this!
Drivetribe has just gone up a level, more like this please! 👌
I believe Hammond is one of the most passionate car reviewers (alongside clarkson too). Great to see you behind the wheel like this again 🙂
love Hammond, love what you guys at drivetribe are doing to keep the epicness from the grand tour and top gear series, incredible work to put this much emotion into me from such a simple video, well done
At time: 2:18 he does a heal toe shift that uses the fact that front breaks always engage first. So it shifts more power to the rear differential to tweak performance. That's brilliant, and I have done that before and never knew it was an actual thing! Wow, learn something new about myself all the time these days!
Side note: really hard teaching some people how to drive a stick. And I hate how there are zero manual transmission cars being produced for us. I don't want to live in a population where no one is smart enough or well rounded enough to drive a standard transmission.
These videos literally make my day 🥰
This was amazing to watch, Genuinely incredible to see the impreza brought back to life and reunited with Hammond 🙏
Love watching Hammond behind the wheel..almost as much as I enjoy his take on the car he's in. That Subaru is epic. I've always enjoyed the sound those engines make
Always enjoy the happiness of Richard when he's driving a car that makes him feel alive. Next, we need a video of Izzy driving the car with Richard as the passenger, the mixture of joy and fear on his face will be a classic.
Oh yes!!
The shear joy and excitement this car brought Richard while driving it is so wholesome. Great video, DRIVETRIBE.
Bravo 👏 👏 Richard Bravo 👏 , i just new this side of you was alive and well and watching this brought a tear to this 42 yr old man. You have been a major part of my lifes happiness for more than twenty years and i thank you. There will never be another trio with such impact in the automotive entertainment industry or reality based infotainment for that matter. Todays generation really missed out being able to grow up with Hammond, May and Clarkson and their weekly trips to all of their fans tv sets for 20+ yrs of pure pleasure and knowledgeable comedic banter! I pray the powers that be release season 6 TGT for us to have a 'One last time' moment with three of our best mates that most of us have probavly never even met. Im gonna miss them and know a lot of you will too. Happy New Year TG/TGT family
Amazing to watch his genuine reaction, im gonna miss the grand tour though.
I remember vividly my Dad taking me and my brother out in a Turbo 2000 Impreza unmarked police car around 1995, it was like nothing else we'd ever experienced at that time.
He ended up owning a couple of the same shape as Hammonds from new, and I was luckily enough to be old enough for him to let me drive them by this point - they definitely feel, erm, unique lol
Trust Hammond to put soul into a video every time he happens to be in a driver's seat. Can't get enough of such great videos.
This was an awesome video! 6:28 I love what Hammond says here! its profound stuff you only hear from Hammond, Clarkson, and May! Cars are living things!!!!!
A brilliant vid that shows Richards passion for cars, and the thrill he gets from driving them quickly. More please!
every country in the world: "oh it's raining. we'll have to postpone filming"

Richard looks more happy about his STI, than a Rimac! Genuinely loves this car!
Best video ive seen on youtube. This is old style top gear vibes, such a great throwback and absolutely made my day
Brilliant video that was...Could really see the passion flow through Hammond while driving Martin.... Can't wait to see more of Hammond and Martin on a road trip of some sort...hopefully with Clarkson and May...
nothing hits me in the feels like a 04-07 sti i own a 06 and its the most fun and best car ive ever driven
This is exactly what we all want. Feels like the old days
This video just shows how real and genuine the three are in the GT or Top gear. Even after all the scripting in the shows. It makes watching the shows even better again
Seeing Richard with a big smile on face gives me the heartful feeling of satisfaction watching him enjoying the drive, makes you feel that you're in the car with him. Congrats Richard enjoy the drive like I did when I got my first GC8 rally edition back in 97, still got the car I will never part with it I guess some car do that to people.
I have always admired these cars from afar until I nearly bought one but plumped for a Fiesta ST and never regretted it. My neighbour a lot of years ago had the MacRae 555 version then bought an RB5 and although I never drove it his partner drove myself and friends into town one Saturday evening and it cornered like it was on rails. That car you have there is a real weapon and has to be driven to be appreciated. Enjoy!!!
Just a man having fun in his car.
so glad you like it, was a pleasure to see your reaction to it, im glad you and the car are together its such a great pairing and can really see and hear you pleasure with it
As far back as I can remember, I always wanted a WRX. 3 Years ago I turned 40 and I finally bought a 2013. She wasn't treated the best befor I found her, but I wouldn’t trade her for the world. Thanks Richard! You really captured the essence that the cars are made of.
How to make a man cry. Put Richard Hammond back in front of a camera just road testing his own car.
You may not review cars anymore, but you haven’t lost your fastball. Congrats on the new ride. Enjoy it.
I love that you're actually using the DCCD to change the feel of the car while driving. I've got an 06 STI and use it regularly to better my urban driving, or mountain runs. So many people I've met that also have WRX STIs never touch it.
I'm excited to see Martin come to life in the hands of its owner. Richard has been behind this and waiting ever so patiently. I'm almost as thrilled as he is. This is a bucket list car for me... Thank you for sharing this experience...
the things i would do to have even the low setting in my wrx wagon 😂😂 i dumped money in suspension/mount makeover instead. but it would be an animalnin the twisties
love your vid
The way Hammond sets the tone of the Blobeye is amazing! As a subie owner.. makes me shed a tear!
After the colours and scale of grand tour this video reaches out and touches you. Its almost nostalgic. It feels of the old top gear like its personal and in a world of big budgets and outdoing everyone it feels simple, no frills and bloody brilliant.❤❤❤
