  • Here is how to perform a pressure test at the fuel rail. This test can be done to diagnose a number of things. Bad fuel pump, injectors, fuel lines, etc.
    I did this test on my 2.2 Chevy S10, but this will be the same with any vehicle with a valve already installed from the factory.
    Pressure tester similar to the one I have:

    Mine was staying at 61 psi while at idle running. I hope that is in spec? When I gave it some throttle, it didn’t go up. I guess that normal on these cause 61 psi should be plenty under load...

    The fuel filter and fuel pump was changed. Still seems like the truck doesn’t have enough power. Going up hill in 5 gear, hits 55 mph. When I give it fuel with the hood up, sounds like it is sucking in a lot of air. Is that normal?

    Your regulator might be bad. It was twitching a little. When I tested mine it was steady as a rock. When I unplugged the regulator it would twitch like yours did.

    Hey I have 0PSI in my jeep but my car starts and sometimes I have to crank it longer to start. Could it be a bad fuel pump?

    • @MightyMechanic

      Does it stay running after it starts? When it does start what is the pressure then?

    • @FA-sr6lx
      @FA-sr6lx 6 років тому

      MightyMechanic it stays running after I turn it on, never shuts off. But the pressure is 0. I think my pressure gauge is broken or a bad fuel pump. I'm going to test the fuel pressure gauge on a different vehicle.

    • @MightyMechanic

      It can't run on 0 pressure. You must have a bad tester.

    • @MightyMechanic

      That should be enough for it to, at the very least, try to start. I believe your problem is elsewhere. I would check to make sure you are getting spark and compression.

      @@MightyMechanic Checked spark and already put in new fuel pump still trys to start for a few seconds longest was like 12 seconds could it possibly be a jumped timing chain on this 2.2 gmc sonoma 1998, also replaced crank sensor and i believe its good since tach moves when it starts to fire a little also thought about camshaft sensor but leaniong toward timing chain skipped any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

      @@maryshan80 probably definitely timing, timing chain tensioner usually breaks/loosens prior to chain failure, personal suggestion; don't bother changing crank sprocket. Not worth the headache

    Hey I have the same 2.2L S10 as you but I can’t seem to get my fuel pressure above 45PSI. Do you have a flex fuel model? I’ve replaced my pump, regulator, injectors, filter. Still 45 PSI. I’m at a wall on how to get my pressure up to where yours is.

    • @tomrc4328
      @tomrc4328 5 років тому +1

      If you have a SFI 2.2 S10 like shown in this video, then your fuel filter is probably bad. Three port filter has a pressure regulator. I had a brand new filter that had a bad regulator and I'd get 100 psi at idle. Put the original back in and pressure dropped to 55 psi at idle.

    • @MightyMechanic
      @MightyMechanic  7 років тому +4

      I believe that is the EVAP hose. The cap is where you apply pressure or vacuum to find a leak in the system.

But if I give anymore than half of the gas pedal it spits and sputters so bad the engine boggs and the best way ik to describe it the way it sounds is a 1990's honda civic with a fart can trying to do a 2 step.....if anyone may have an idea what it could be plz help I got it bc I thought it would be a simple and easy fix like spark plug or coil pack but they are fine.....

    I have 99 s10 2.2 liter with intermittent no start/long crank time to start, though sometimes starts right up. Suspecting fuel issue. Fuel pressure is about 40 with key on, and about 35-40 while engine running. When turn engine off gague shows it holds pressure. Is it possible weak fuel pump? Do you know fuel pressure specs for 99 2.2 liter engine. The fuel pump was replaced about a year ago, so I didn't suspect it, but now wondering since my pressure reading is at least 10psi less than yours

      @@GiorgosC-rp5ms So I had my uncle who was a mechanic listen to it, and he told me it was the starter. He stated that the starter was sometimes catching and starts up, but sometimes not catching and thus the long crank/no start. I didn't really think it was the starter, but since he has decades of experience and as I had replaced the fuel pump last year and the fuel pressure seemed okay and it had the OEM starter in it from like 20 years ago, I decided to just go ahead and replace the starter. The result? Fixed the problem! Starts right up ever since, no issues! So, if you haven't replaced the starter in your truck, that could be the issue. I mean after 20 years, why not right? It's a pretty easy job to do, and the starter is not too expensive if you order it online.
