This video will show that you can switch a Chevrolet S10 2.2 engine with a Cavalier 2.2. This specific example is for the years of 1998 - 2001. I did a lot of research an there wasn't too many website saying that you can do a swap of these 2 motors, so hopefully this helps you. This will describe everything you will need to switch over to make this work.
I just get a 2000 s10 with bad engine en the engine from the junk yard is about 750$, but I found a cavalier for 350$, this video just save me some money.
thanks a lot and keep up with the good videos like this!
+apolinar santos you are very welcome!!!
Good informational video! I have a 2000 Isuzu hombre with the 2.2 engine. i hydrolocked the motor and bent a connecting rod . I have a 1999 Chevy cavalier 2.2 engine I’m installing it my truck. I was wondering about the timing cover because I also realized the difference in them. Came to UA-cam watched this video and found it extremely helpful!
Thank you so much for watching!
Good job on the swap. Looks good and you took your time to make sure all parts that were better were put on the new engine.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Looks like I’m gonna RWD my cavy with the 2.2 lmao thank you!!
WOW!
Good job with the updating throughout the process!
I can help but hear hamm from you story watching this video lol great video my man
Nice I love it when I see videos like this
Desde Panamá City construí un swap igual para una s10 quedo genial solo cambiar las configuraciones de los accesorios y el deposito de aceite porque el del cavaliers es más grande y el del s10 más chico. Saludos
Amigo será igual al de rodeo 95?
iv also done this swap a few years back got a vid on my page about , glad to see someone else did it , i don't understand why people say i can't be done
I looked for about an hour before I committed to the swap. Didn't really find anything saying you could for sure do the swap, so that is why I did the video. I am glad you got one out there too! Thank you for watching!
How is your oil pressure and wich oil sensor did you use.
people claim certain engines can't be done because they take a quick look at it and if it looks different then its a no go for them. Meanwhile people like you and Chad here are a bit more intelligent and see that the engines are exactly the same aside from a few covers and brackets so it should work without a ton of effort.
I had someone tell me the most popular swap for any S10 will not work. Mine is a first gen with a 4.3L now and the guy literally said a 350 would not fit and would not work and the tranny would not bolt up. After i was finished laughing in his face I asked him to explain to me why a 350 would not fit when it has 3 quarters of a 350 in it right now? At that point I decided to only listen to knowledgeable people.
Plus as far as any machine goes. If it has an engine in it then nearly anything can be swapped in it. It just depends on how much time you want to invest in modding the vehicle. Shit right now I am entertaining the idea of swapping in a 3800 Series II S/C because I have a L36 block with L67 heads and charger (also have a tranny but can't use it case it is a transverse so I have to stick with the 4L60 in the truck). Honestly the amount of engine possibilities open up a lot when you have a welder and know how to weld.
idontgiveafuck08. How can I find your video on the swap?
Hey Andre, not sure if you were referring to me or the original poster. But... I don’t have the step by step for this removal and install. Mainly, this is just showing this swap can be done. Good luck!!
great video and good workmanship.
+super8car thanks man!!
95 cavalier/sunfire engine will fit 94-95 s10. 96-97 cavalier/sunfire engine will fit 96-97 s10. 98 and up cavalier/sunfire engine will fit 98 and up s10. Always install new timing chain kit!! Im talking about 2.2 engine.
Just to be clear on this. I own a 97 Sunfire 2.2. I also own a 98 s10 2.2 with a bad motor. I can do this with no problems?
Derek Kennedy it will not work has to be 97 or 96
@@edvinneluis2635 thank you
Cool video. I want to keep my 2000 Sunfire alive as long as possible. Good to know about S10 2.2l
I wonder if a Cobalt SS engine would fit
I was wonder the same thing I was thinking of doing it but don't know if you can
A S10 with the SS swap and AWD.
They drop LS or SBCs in these trucks. Even 4.3 LU3s
@@shadowopsairman1583 Front to rear weight ratio is to front heavy to handle well. A well tuned turbo 4 cylinder will outrun your small block on the road I live on in Eastern KY. In both power to weight AND front to rear weight ratios. My opinion, mind you.
@@bubbalouie4022 a Lamborghini has no chance against us on those Kentucky roads we know family, we've been to dress rehearsal a couple thousand times literally. I live out in the sticks and could drive to town blindfolded. I know how to lead every curve when to brake and when to goose it!!! We have also learned the hard way not to buy expensive vehicles because it's just a matter of time until a deer gets your front end again😂
After doing a couple of V8 swaps I already know it's way more than you think, and you end up with a very front heavy vehicle
This video is very helpful as it gives me a heads-up what to look for as I am swapping an engine out of a newer Cavalier that has the 2.2 engine into a 1996 Chevy S-10. Still not clear in my head as to what to do w/the Cavalier distributor; hoping to use it as is, maybe knock a little depression in the S-10 firewall before installing. Looks good otherwise, Thanks
Oh man. An automatic 2.2 liter what’s powerhouse! Got the 2.2 stick in my 2000 it’s the slowest truck I’ve ever driven can only imagine an automatic trans in that truck with this engine
a turd on wheels ,it sucks
@Marty Gray mine got totaled. Damn kids drivin their dads wranglers at night.
@Marty Gray damn near ripped my cab off the frame. If the bed didn’t stop it it would of flung off.
Enjoy that little truck for me.
Mine was literally irreplaceable it was so clean RIP lil cheby
Love the sound of an ol 2.2
Joseph Betts hate the sound of a old 2.2 wish these engines were smooth and quiet like my maxima engine
Edvin Neluis Maxima engines ROCK! That would be epic is they put a 3.0L V6 in a s10! They can fit a 4.3 so why not a 3.0? (Also my fave maxima is the one from 89-94, I call it the square body maxima. I wish to own one some day.)
DestruxandExploze I have a 1989 black nissan maxima. I installed a 1994 engine because i bought the car with a engine that bkew a rod. Engine is very smooth and quiet.
Thanks for the video.
Great video, I’m in the middle of doing the exact same swap and after years of working in Mercedes I can tell you this is the worst engineered vehicle I’ve ever dealt with its absolute piece of crap
Has anyone done an aftermarket intake manifold? I’d like to clean up the look of my engine and get rid of that mess up top. Hopefully find a way to bypass Egr and actually be able to see the valve cover
Casting numbers? Sensor compatibility?
Anyone doing this swap, make sure you move the oil pickup tube with the pan.
Why?
@@trikelyfe6090 because he said so bitch
Great video nice job
Thank you!
if you would Have bought a 4.3 V6 S10 you wouldn't have been doing this swap in the first place but anyway good job how it lasts longer then the 1st one
+Dillon Koch totally agree!!! lol I sold the truck, but it was running strong before selling it. Thanks for watching!!! :)
Chad Williams that's good did you at least turn a profit for break-even?
Drove it for the whole winter and then sold it for what I bought it for. So I broke even :)
Chad Williams hell yeah that's good I don't think I'll ever sell my 2002 ZR2 this specific one is so rare
I might get the early 2000's 4x4 blazer and do the LS3 conversion, and will add lsd in it.
What year is your s10? Great video!
I did the same swap but the cavalier sensor reads full pressure all the time and the s10 sensor reads 20 pounds after warm up at idle.oils clean and motor isnt consuming fluids or making any terrible noises.sounds good..
I would maybe do a manual oil pressure test. You can do a loan a tool at a local auto parts store, they usually have them. 20 pounds of pressure is what I had before I changed the motors, it was too low for me. The new motor from the Cavalier had a lot better pressure.
Chad Williams 20 psi is normal for this at idle warm
I've heard you have to mess with a freeze plug in the cylinder head if you do this. Is that true?
Umm low oil pressure? Why not change oil pump????? Why do all that work.
Afraid of the damage that may have already occurred. :/ 50-50 chance with just replacing the pump
Worn cam/crank/rod bearings can also affect oil pressure...
Did you need a puller to get the crank pulley off?
Is it still running good? I heard the cams are slightly different which causes pinging under hard acceleration but I only heard it by one person on an s10 forum so it may not be true.
I'm planning on doing that swap after watching your video, I'm in california, my concern is the smog state requirements. what state are you in?
I am in Michigan, so I don’t have to be compliant with any smog (Luckily). Maybe if you buy another California smog motor would be your best bet.
thanks for the quick reply, I really appreciate it. very nice and informative video.
Thank you, I appreciate the praise! :)
So a s10 motor will fit in a cavalier?
+Jamair Wright Sure will, you will just need to swap everything I did in the video. Easiest if you have both motors out right next to each other like I did.
I have a 1996 S-10 and want to put a 2000 Cavalier 2.2 in it. Would I have trouble w/the bellhousing/transmission, or would it still fit?
I've always heard that all 2.2 have a chatter to em my Sonoma does is that normal?
+Lilwill Newell yeah, they usually have a little chatter from the timing chain. If you haven't changed yours out and have a good amount of miles, it may be a good idea to do that.
this is an old post and so is the info,my son just traded for a 2001 s10 with the 2.2 4 cylinder, and its really quiet, kinda spooky, the truck on has 142k miles on it and it runs like a sewing machine, and the engine doesn't have enough power to hurt the transmissions,he loves the gas mileage, just saying
will a 2002 cav motor fit a 2000 s10?
any ideas on replacing the EGR I did the same swap not sure where to place that? or if there is a alternative for that...... great video thank you in advance for any ideas you may have.....
Could you maybe just do an egr block off and not use it at all?
My transmission went out on my 2001 Chevy s10 2.2l automatic. Can I use a 1998 to 2001 chevy cavalier transmission?
Thanks
No, a Chevy Cavalier is a FWD, and an S10 is a RWD truck, so the transmissions won’t work.
It won't work.
I've got a 95 2.2 s10 and was wondering if you know if a 96 2.2 sunfire will work in it?
I am saying yes, they are the same engine.
No! 94 and 95 s10 need 1995 2.2 cavalier or sunfire engine 1995 only!
I have a 94 sonoma/s10 with a 2.2l would a a 2.2 from a 2001 s10 fit?
Why didn't you put in a 4.3?
I feel like that would be counter intuitive. the weight of the 4.3 compared to the 2.2 is much heavier. So although the 2.2 has 50 less hp it would still come out on top because of the weight and fuel consumption and honestly it would be the same.
The 2.0 engine and 2.2 has the same trans bell housing , as does the 2.5 Pontiac iron Duke , as does the 2.8 V-6 ,and the 3.4 V-6
All 4 of these engines will fit the transmission, you will have to change the motor mounts with the V-6 engines ,
As for me , I'm installing a 350 V-8 and installing a Turbo 350 trans
Is that valve train noise when you started it up sounds like a little diesel lol sweet swap l'm gonna do the same swap when my engine poops out just wondering what that noise is my truck doesn't sound like that now
+Slime Lines well, that timing chain I switched out, ended up being worse than the one that was in it. So, I bought a new timing chain and that noise went away.
Chad Williams oh gotcha yea i was wondering it sounded horrible glad you caught it before it got much worse
+Slime Lines me too!!!!
I wld like know if engine from 98 cavalier fit on 99 S10 both are 2.2?
I am 98% sure that It will work. But, you might want to do your own research as well.
Change the motor mounts and I think starter is different been a bit since I done one
I have 2000 s10 and I swapped for 01 cavalier but the fuel rail isn’t the same ?
What do you suggest?
Will this work for s10 4.3 to 2.2 sunfire engine ?? Thanks ;)
Personally, I wouldn’t go from a 4.3 to the 2.2. Probably a lot of work.
@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll thanks bro for the reply
Does it perform better than the original 2.2? I ask cause I think I remember seeing cavaliers rated at 140 hp
The 2.2 OHV engine like this one was rated at 115HP. The cavalier was also sold with a 2.2 DOHC engine rated at 140.
Ah ok.
I just did this swap and I have everything bolted up besides the driveshaft and exhaust. And I have this misfire/backfire when it's running. New plugs, wires, ignition module, coil packs, and crankshaft sensor any ideas will be much appreciated
Hey Joey! So, first thing I would check is if you have the wires ran correct from the coil pack to the spark plugs. If, they are all correct, then I would check compression for each of the cylinders. Let me know if that help!
Chad Williams yeah wires are correct and compression ranged from 160 -175 so I'm at a lost
Did you do timing while you had the new engine out? Maybe it is a tooth off? Maybe there is slack in the chain or tensioner that is causing it to be off at certain intervals?
I didn't touch the timing I'll do that today thanks
Sounds good! The timing chain can do crazy things in these trucks. Mine had slack in it, causing a lose of oil pressure. It was so hard to diagnose.... Good luck Joey!
Build that 2.2!!!
ohhh, I would have loved to, but just needed a usable truck at that current time. That truck is long sold now :(
Hey Chad, do you know if I can put a 1998 Chevy s10 2.2 4cyl motor into a 2001 2.2 4cy ( flex fuel) s10. The 2001 blew up but I have a good 1998. I know I have to change the exhaust manifold for the secondary air injection, but not sure about any sencors or anything else I need to worry about. THANKS ALOT FOR ANY INFO.
Hey Kyle! I am not 100% sure about the 1998, but the 1999 -2001 2.2 engines will work. You may have to do a little more research on what is different between the 1998 engine and 99-01 engines. I hope this helps a little.
I'm in the middle of doing a swap. Do You really have to swap the oil pan?
Hey! Yes, you do have to change the oil pan. They are different.
@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll yeah, I noticed it, but I was wondering if it would actually hit the Cross bar. I'll be play it safe and swap it out too
How was oil pressure after warmed up and did you wind up swapping over the oil pressure sensor again from the Cavalier
The oil pressure was great! It sat right at 40 or more the whole time. I ended up just using the oil pressure sensor that was on the S10 motor. It turned out to work perfectly.
What about the motor mounts?
They swapped over perfectly. They have the bolt holes in the block and treaded. You will have no issues there.
I have a 2002 s10 that I got cheap because it threw a rod. What year cavalier motor will work
+blake barnett any that say 2200 SFI on the Intake plastic. I believe 99-00 would be safe bets.
Chad Williams ok thank you ! They are proud of the s10 engines!
+blake barnett you are very welcome!!
Any modifications needed on the motor mounts?
I had to do zero modifications to the motor mounts. The Cavalier engine block already had the holes tapped and just swapped them directly.
+Chad Williams ok thank you building a budget s10 now with a cavalier motor lol
happy u made the video but after almost completely apart why not rebuild it? 300 bucks for kit :)
+shadyonej I love to replace engines rather than rebuilding them. It is easier to do for me and less time. I am glad you liked the video! :)
absolutely! thinking of swapping my 03 with a reman engine
+shadyonej not a bad idea! These S-10's are super easy to work on and plenty of room.
Because that 300 quickly turns to more than 700
What year model truck? What year model cav did you use ? I have to fix my sons truck
I believe this was a 2000 S10 and I used a 2001 Cavalier donor motor. I hope this helps!
My sons truck is a 2000 model broke a rod with 84k might rebuild his not sure yet. But thanks How that truck running?
I ended up selling it, but it was running great up until I sold it. :)
notice any increase in power?
+panchosamurai no power increase, the were the same engine, just had to replace it. I did increase my oil pressure though which was the goal.
Hmm I wonder how much power output would increase if the Ecotec was put in the place of the 2.2 Ohv, that or the 2.4 quad 4.
Coming to think of it, maybe use the turbo Cobalt SS engine setup in the truck.
Does the cavalier engine make more power than the s10 one?
+Bob Can Too horsepower is no different. Will not make any difference. Would have been nice if it did though!!!
Okay, good to know and thanks for the reply man!
Hey, Nice video. I was wondering if you could possibly help? . I have a 99 s10 that I put a motor in from a 01 Sunfire. Everything works great, runs great, no misfiring. But it vibrates, Park, reversed, Drive, going down the road. I did put in a new motor mounts, cheap ones from eBay. But I did everything just like you did and I can't figure it out. Wondering if you or anybody else had any ideas ???????Thanks, Carl
+Carl Nutter The only things I can think of is the 2 motor mounts and validating all the bell housing bolts are tight. You put the 2 long bolts in the motor mount to rubber bushings, right? I assume these are things you already checked, but just thinking out loud.
Yep everything is good there. Nothing is binding, I have a new flex pipe on the exhaust all exhaust is good.. well thank you very much if you think of anything you know where to find me😳
+Carl Nutter good luck Carl! I will ponder it some more and let you know if there is anything I can think of.
Torque converter
that's not a stamp, its a warranty button if you engine is overheated and u try to wannaty it from junk yard they check it
Ahh, that makes sense :) Thank you for letting me know!
yep they fall off if overheated its a dead give away
Did u end up doing the swap?
Yeah, I swapped the motors! Ran great!
Chad Williams nice
good jop
Thanks!!! :)
is it quick?
Same speed as before. Cavalier, Sunfire, and S10 4 cylinder truck share the same engine.
do you know if a motor from a 2001 cavalier work in a 1999 s10?
+bob jerry yes, that should work as both those years are SFI 2200 engines.
the cavalier is auto and the s10 is manual what would consist of changing it to manual if you know?
+bob jerry it should just be the flywheel. But when you have both motors side by side, you should be able to tell differences.
flywheel and clutch and flywheel bolts from s10 just remove the flexplate and bolt ur clutch and flywheel on and you will need to swap the pilot bearing in the crank as well
i was getting this motor for a rebuild to have a spare so i was gonna order my new parts for a manual but thanks for that
How many hours?
Probably around 8 hours total.
@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll wow, it seems extremely efficient. Nice Job.
how about some v8 w/ that s10??
That would have been so good! Just wasn’t the right time :(
Sounds bad. 3 motors on low miles 🧐
TheRussellcarl
Well when people don’t know how to do routine maintenance.
And in my opinion these s10 2.2 4 cylinder trucks are only worth it if they are 5 speed manual. Automatics are slow as a turtle.
I wish mine was a manual... oh well.
@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll hey Chad, will a 98 s10 2.2 fit in or replace a 2001 s10 2.2 flex motor. The 2001 2.2 flex fuel motor blew up. I'm worried about the sencors. I know I need to change the manifold for the secondary air injection. I'm not sure about anything else I will need to be concerned about. ANY help greatly appreciated..
Crees que sirva el tapa rayado
Huh, a FWD engine in a RWD truck... incredible
Its easy
Incredible? Not that hard
So would this mean it would be fwd ??
Nope, still rear wheel drive. The S10 and Cavalier share the same motor. It is the transmission, intake, exhaust, mounting brackets, and a few other things that are different.
Some have the 4x4, with press of button it kicks in, at least in the Blazer it does.
XD LOL!
I would of thrown a 4.3 in it
Not a bad idea, just didn't want to deal with the computer and transmission change... 350 would be even better.
Chad Williams true
you know what be even better than that? a 4bt cummins
Get the 350 engine and ecm along with other parts from the gmc pick up and stick it in the S10 / S15 / Blazer / Jimmy.
Degrease that engine
Get a fucking V8
Would loved to, wasn’t in the budget at that moment :(
How did you get it to work with your ECU/computer?
Well, everything is just plug and play because it is the same engine, sensors, etc.
@@ChadWilliamsFixesAll Yeah,i guess.I did this with a Nissan frontier putting in an engine from a Nissan Xterra and had problems but I guess this would work.I'll give it a shot. Thanks
