  • In this video I show you how I was able to test for fuel pressure on my 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. I was using the Harbor Freight fuel pressure test kit which I thought was decent for the price.

I used to tell my students “the doors are going to fall off, the headlamp switch will fall back into the dash, and the seat will beak while going down the highway. But your Chevy will always get you home if you have an extra fuel pump or two in the glove box!”
Of course we had similar sayings for ford and dodge

Here some specs for fuel pressure from the haynes manual 99-06
Fuel pressure (key on, engine off)
    V6 engines 60-66 psi
    V8 engines
    Vin z (e85) 48-54 psi
    All other 55-62
    Hope this helps someone :p

Woo-Hoo, Jimmy! So glad to see you got this fixed. I look forward to hearing what the problem was. I figured it was a fuel supply issue, but I'm guessing it wasn't the fuel pump since it was apparently working.

Strong fuel pump very good fuel pressure at 45 psi . Rev it up little pid it will jump to 49 to 50 or more .45 psi at idle is normal because the fuel pressure regulator doing its job at idle to return more excess fuel in the fuel tank. And congrats

The guage fluctuation is normal. May I suggest you buy a service manual like Chilton or Haynes there is a wealth of information and troubleshooting.

Congrats finally got it up and running again. Will I am 100% sure it's the fuel pump. Because I drive GM trucks and that usually what goes bad. About your fuel pressure doing what you see it's normal, It is because the pressure needs to be at specific amount. And when ever it get over that it returns the fuel through the return line. :)

  • @prancstaman

I had the lines blow off the pump inside the tank a couple of times. Just enough to lower fuel pressure at first and then completely blow off. Gauge jumping around is normal, a sign of the fuel flowing through the lines. Fuel pressure is set at 45 psi for cruise, the fuel regulator has a vacuum line going to it so when you floor it, vacuum to regulator drops to 0 and in turn raises the fuel pressure about 10 psi because when accelerating the engine needs extra gas coming out of injectors. Easier to do it this way because it takes more doing to lengthen the injector pulse and probably create a stumble. Vacuum line going to the fuel regulator is the same idea as an accelerator pump on a carburetor.

The gauge shakes when running because the fuel is moving through the fuel rail instead of just sitting there at a constant pressure.

I'm guessing a connection came undone- either the strainer sock or the pump itself. As for the fluttering needle- my '89 Buick OEM setup has a component called a "pulsator dampner" that is inline with the pump. Because it's a "roller cell" design- the pulsator turns the pulses into a steady stream; when the diaphragm goes bad- that's what you get. I plan on replacing my OEM with a Bosch Turbine pump, which is far superior.

Sounds like: 1) the pressure reg. could be bad. Can you see &/or smell any gas in the vac hose connecting to it? That or 2) one or more of your injectors are faulty & stuck open, so it's basically dumping waaaaaay to much fuel into the cylinder(s) Are any of your plugs carboned up? That could also explain the Vibrating gas press gauge reading. Was any of this close to what you found??? DL

Hey Jimmy. I live in Vegas.
Hi, I have a 2000 CLass A Winnabago Sunflyer with a F53 chasis V10 6.8 liter Ford. 2 weeks ago it was driving fine and then all of a sudden the engine stopped running. It will crank but wont start.I checked the relays and fuses, all were ok. I changed the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator. Still the same symptoms, i pushed on the shrader vale located on the fuel rail and very little fuel pressure was coming out. I dont have a fuel pressure guage and my wife and I are both disabled and cant afford RV tech mechanics at 200.00 $ an hour. Any help or suggestions you or anyone can please give me. Thank you. Oh BTW, I had disconnected the battery earlier and I can see any codes.

You need to purge the air from the tester You can to that with a tester that has the pressure relief valve. Little more expensive, but it's worth it.

    • @JrSpitty
      @JrSpitty 2 роки тому +1

At 50lb of pressure you are going to compress air to the point it doesn't matter. That pressure relief valve is for people who like to remove the gauge without having to crank the engine over with the fuel system disabled to safely remove the tool. I know this because I have one of those high end kits... never have I ever needed to "purge" air. If that was the case you would see a procedure in service manual for this... which there isn't because they know its not a problem and would be incredibly dangerous to do so.
