The people who made the SR games years ago are long gone most likely, replaced by fresh graduates from art schools who might've maybe played the games back when they were little kids. But they also probably weren't too invested in the series, and without the fame or skill to create their own ip they have to resort to the body snatcher method of hijacking another series and turning it into their own with zero regard for the existing fanbase.
Obviously Volition is still at fault but I don’t fully blame them, like Flippy said at the end of the day it’s Deepsilver who decides what to do with their IP and deep silver is incapable of realizing the they were wrong

What a tragedy. I had a small glimmer of restored hope when they said the patch is their main focus. I don't want IdolNinja's hard work to go down the drain like that. He put every fiber of his being into that patch with his blood sweat and tears. At this point, it's safe to assume that the patch itself was probably put on hold indefinitely. RIP Saints Row, Volition, and especially Mike Watson.

5:05 Man, seeing the loading screens for GotR hits hard - I drew and collaged those (heraldic one was a layer-heavy clipart mashup) and some of the weapon icons in prolonged back and forths with Idol back when the mod development was in full swing, and those were the most fun "staying up late" (due to timezone differences) sessions. Idol had that contagious drive y'know. Didn't care much for reboot, but the likely death of sr2 patch just... really sucks.. Damn.
Even without Violition, I sincerely doubt there's going to be another Saints Row for at least another six-seven years, even if they started development today, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be out long before they could finish the game, and there's no way a franchise with the current bad blood thr IP has with the audience right now could even hope to match a juggernaut like GTA.
Oh, totally. Even if the patch they were working on for SR2 comes out and miraculously makes the game properly playable on the PC, even a return to form would probably get run over by GTA 6.
The reboot was their perfect window to pull in those very fans who were yearning for a new open world too and they failed on capitalizing on that. So sad.

When Embracer Group announced the downsizing of their gaming division, I knew it was only a matter of time before some sort of announcement came out about Volition having layoffs in some fashion, but a full studio closure?! Man, I'm so devastated that it came to this. Rest in Peace Volition. At least I can still go back to SR1, 2, and The Punisher and have a good time remembering the good ol days before AoM and the reboot. Thanks for keeping the community updated on this whole thing and the SR2 patch. Its such a shame that we all had to watch something we love slowly crash and burn.
I love the original Saints Row games, The Punisher, and the original Red Faction games. Volition was the king of environmental interaction, physics and destruction mechanics, especially at its peak with Red Faction Guerilla.
Not surprising. Saints Row could've easily been a topselling franchise if they focused more on crime families and fleshed them out. The sequels could've focused on british gangs, the Triads, Yakuza and other modern gangs. Instead they went with hipster college kids.
Volition thought their ESG masters would protect them the same way they protect Disney from going under. Unfortunately for those clowns, the powers that be don't care about a mid tier game studio the same way they care about a huge movie studio.

I dont know what to think right now but i hope in some way this series can continue but with this i dont know. At this point, it would be a cold and cruel move not to finish this patch. And before anyone says it; no, I don't care if they're a business who operates on how much of a profit they can turn. Business rule books can lick my truck nuts.
Well let's think like reasonable adults. Why would they spend money and resources to update a 15 year old game if they will not turn a profit? The thing about companies is that they are often funded by investors and those investors expect a return on investment. You want a say in how a company operates? Invest a large enough sum of money into that company. Because I can assure you those investors have put much more money into that company than the $60 or so you pay for a game. And why does money matter? Well no one will work for free, so they need money to pay all their employees, they need money to pay for the lights, equipment and licenses to run their business. They need to pay for the building they operate in, for the marketing of their games, all of this is very expensive, so it wouldn't make any sense for them to waste money and resources that could go to other projects on a game that is almost 20 years old just to make a few people happy. It makes no sense. Just go play a new game

At this rate, they should just give the community the source code and let the fans make a patch and fix the port. that way everyone gets atleast some kind of compromise on this. But companies like DeepSilver don't want compromise they just want all the chips.
Volition's problem is simple; they got burnout by fame and reputation of this single IP, Saints Row. Once Steve Jarros left the studio and many others followed the same, Volition just can't do nothing except Saints Row. What I meant by this is that, Volition got other great IP like Freespace, or Red Faction, Descent or Summoner. They could make Freespace 3 or 4 and put Saints Row aside for awhile but they got burnout at the end.

To be fair, it could just be that standards for how well a game sold in 2008 vs. what's expected of a game from 2022/3 are vastly different. It wouldn't surprise me if the reboot _technically_ sold more than 2, but not enough for them to warrant keeping the studio around. But of course, I could just be wrong. That tends to happen.

That was always the case, but they used to be competent products with actual talent in them. Nowadays they're not even seen as products by these bigger AAA companies, but as "services" They don't even need talent or a decent hiring process anymore, they can just put out trash by incompetent straight out of college nobodies with rich daddies and it will sell on brand loyalty alone.
@@trabuco9 I don’t think it was always the case, especially with the games that were made 2 decades ago that we still hold onto like CoD, Halo, CS, Fallout, etc. They were all made as passion projects that never got the respect they deserved from the higher ups until long after those games had bankrolled their companies. The people who used to make games were actually driven and motivated people with any amount of a vision for what they want to create, nowadays you’d be hard pressed to find a AAA dev who has their own opinion on anything, just another office drone that would’ve been content being a paper pusher at some legal firm.
@@trabuco9 but yeah, there is a lot to be said about the people who get hired at AAA studios now. I really do think that the money people now run games companies instead THE PEOPLE MAKING GAMES. This is evident if you watch any of Tim Cain’s UA-cam videos where he describes the process of making modern games, and even the greed that permeated the late 90’s and early 00’s and how it’s gotten worse over time.
They haven't made a game I've really liked it in well over 10 years, but it's still a shame, especially when there were people like IdolNinja at Volition, and the video community team before the reboot were clearly passionate about the games they made (even if they did go quiet post-AoM). I'm interested in seeing what you know once you get it all structured.
Saints Row at one point in time was truly something special. I’m getting older & I’ve seen a lot of big series rise & fall, but I was still sad to see this one. I know that reboot was horrible, but I’m mourning what once was more than what it became.

ive been with flippy since agents of mayhem. this almost feels like the true end of an era because flippy has pretty much said everything there could be said about one of my favorite video game franchises of all time. we know saints row literally had the potential to take over GTA as the best open world crime sim series if they put in the work but all that potential was thrown away because volition went the blue pill route, sold out, and made a fool of the series because they didn’t have the confidence to go up against gta. SAN ANDREAS is a gamg simulator where you work your way up from a sellout that ran away in the middle of a gang war to being the leader of the toughest gang in the state. that is literally the formula of saints row but they didn’t build on it.

People have been putting their loyalty into video game developer companies based off of a small handful of games that were made by company, while paying no attention to the people that made these franchises special. For example Bioware has been a corpse with EA as the puppeteer. Mass Effect 2's gameplay suffered almost immediately, the writing was good no doubt, but exploration was gutted heavy. Do I need to even mention Dragon Age 2...
It’s still a job, these publishers don’t see a game. Think about how your boss is asking you to do something. You listen cause they’re paying for you to eat and the community manager was out of line with attacking fans but who really hired them. Volition gone now and only they can say what went wrong with the game. Especially when few who did see the reboot early before releasing the trailer said it was different. It’s like Gus from Breaking Bad not hesitating to cut a man who work for him throat. Can’t mistake the industry as they’ll take you out without blinking and have you replaced. Doesn’t have to be your fault either cause they called the shots but they say it’s your fault for not being more creative.
It feels like the only option at this point is to put pressure on Deep Silver to either do the right thing or sell the IP. Seems unlikely to work since money is involved. IdolNinja deserves the community's best efforts, even if it is in vain.
There are options if Deep Silver chooses them, 1) there was another developer other than Volition that has experience with SR & worked side x side with Volition, that being High Voltage. Or 2) what’s a developer really? Ever hear of David Jaffe? He’s worked for several developers, and created several studios, and regardless of where he goes, Twisted Metal always followed him, the Director is where the series lives and dies, I’d give the license to Clint Ourso, seeing as he directed SR2, the best of the series, but that’s just me.
at this point, I don't know if I can even be shocked. Saints Row was neglected to then be butchered and they had already finished any business with Red Faction (not that I care *too* much about it, but hey, it's something). it's sad we may or may not ever get anything regarding a patch or remaster or whatever the heck with the old SR games, but with the state the series was at this point, we're basically where we started anyways

It’s depressing that Deep Silver basically interfered with the creative process this early on. Even with the janky combat inherited from AOM, the reboot had aspects like the world design and character customization where you can tell the devs cared. And with the ever growing popularity of true crime you’d figure that a soft Saints Row 2.5 style of game would’ve done great, especially with the enduring popularity of GTA5. It’s a damn shame the IP is held hostage to one of Embracer Groups dumbest publishers.

This really sucks to hear about. Admittedly I am more of a GTA fan, just seeing a gaming community get rocked like this is hard. I follow a lot of GTA IV mods which seek to improve the game and make the shitty PC port playable and a lot of progress has been made. Rockstar have made a lot of dumb choices which have hurt the community over the years but things still go on in the modding scene. I hope that this doesn't end up causing people to stop caring about improving the game, and if there is any hope left maybe the patch will come out some day. I was actually looking forward to hearing news of this patch because I have wanted to play this game but was put off by the extensive list of mods to get it working properly.
I'm probably one of the biggest reboot hater, the game was bad and wasn't selling too well but it wasn't the reason they went under. They shit all over the franchise with the direction and it's the reason why people are reveling in their shutdown but even despite all that I find it really sad that the reason their studio shut down was not a video game or shitty management with money. It was some random group bullying other dev companies to expand its bubble buying out as many as they can until it just didn't work, forcing random companies to close their doors because of it. A lot of developers lost their jobs to greedy business men being assholes, not because of a failure of game development and even people who make shitty games don't deserve to get thrown on the street because of that. I've seen a lot of other developers give condolences to the company and the developers for closing, even John Remero said he had listings available for developers so that's good, I just hope a lot of people take out of this that Embracer Group are a bunch of idiots who got the company who made Saints Row, even if it's a shell of its former self, shut down. About the SR2 fix btw I heard that Deep Silver were trying to get rights from Gearbox to keep the work on it before they went down so I assume the people working on it are still working on it or at least on hiatus right now until the situation gets cleared up since Volition was owned by Gearbox so they didn't have the authority to work on the franchise until both Gearbox and Deepsilver agreed to it. Now that there's no worried "can I do that" "can I do this" from DS, maybe we'll get it in a longer time since there needs to be a bigger dev team? It's up for grabs but it's not as hopeless as it seems I think. I may be a little wrong but I don't think Deep Silver would give up now since they seemed adamant to complete it even after Volition was sold.
We all saw this coming. Game companies often don’t understand players. It seems like with this Saints Row, the higher ups wanted their cake and to eat it to by trying to attract a young audience despite the series having an older fanbase. What a shame, because Saints Row 2 struck a good balance of being both progressive and very dark and “gangster” at the same time. RIP Volition, it has been many good years.
All they had to do was make a good game (not even a great game) and not take a dump on its dwindling and divided SR 1/2 & 3/4 fanbase, but they couldn't even do that. The only good thing that came out of it was that it band 1/2 & 3/4 fans together to take a dump on the game right back

What a tragedy. I had a small glimmer of restored hope when they said the patch is their main focus. I don't want IdolNinja's hard work to go down the drain like that. He put every fiber of his being into that patch with his blood sweat and tears. At this point, it's safe to assume that the patch itself was probably put on hold indefinitely. RIP Saints Row, Volition, and especially Mike Watson.

5:05 Man, seeing the loading screens for GotR hits hard - I drew and collaged those (heraldic one was a layer-heavy clipart mashup) and some of the weapon icons in prolonged back and forths with Idol back when the mod development was in full swing, and those were the most fun "staying up late" (due to timezone differences) sessions. Idol had that contagious drive y'know. Didn't care much for reboot, but the likely death of sr2 patch just... really sucks.. Damn.

Even without Violition, I sincerely doubt there's going to be another Saints Row for at least another six-seven years, even if they started development today, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be out long before they could finish the game, and there's no way a franchise with the current bad blood thr IP has with the audience right now could even hope to match a juggernaut like GTA.

When Embracer Group announced the downsizing of their gaming division, I knew it was only a matter of time before some sort of announcement came out about Volition having layoffs in some fashion, but a full studio closure?! Man, I'm so devastated that it came to this.
Rest in Peace Volition. At least I can still go back to SR1, 2, and The Punisher and have a good time remembering the good ol days before AoM and the reboot.

I love the original Saints Row games, The Punisher, and the original Red Faction games. Volition was the king of environmental interaction, physics and destruction mechanics, especially at its peak with Red Faction Guerilla.

Well let's think like reasonable adults. Why would they spend money and resources to update a 15 year old game if they will not turn a profit? The thing about companies is that they are often funded by investors and those investors expect a return on investment. You want a say in how a company operates? Invest a large enough sum of money into that company. Because I can assure you those investors have put much more money into that company than the $60 or so you pay for a game. And why does money matter? Well no one will work for free, so they need money to pay all their employees, they need money to pay for the lights, equipment and licenses to run their business. They need to pay for the building they operate in, for the marketing of their games, all of this is very expensive, so it wouldn't make any sense for them to waste money and resources that could go to other projects on a game that is almost 20 years old just to make a few people happy. It makes no sense. Just go play a new game

Volition's problem is simple; they got burnout by fame and reputation of this single IP, Saints Row. Once Steve Jarros left the studio and many others followed the same, Volition just can't do nothing except Saints Row. What I meant by this is that, Volition got other great IP like Freespace, or Red Faction, Descent or Summoner. They could make Freespace 3 or 4 and put Saints Row aside for awhile but they got burnout at the end.
Ugh they could've easily brought back Red Faction or Summoner.

To be fair, it could just be that standards for how well a game sold in 2008 vs. what's expected of a game from 2022/3 are vastly different. It wouldn't surprise me if the reboot _technically_ sold more than 2, but not enough for them to warrant keeping the studio around. But of course, I could just be wrong. That tends to happen.

@@trabuco9 I don’t think it was always the case, especially with the games that were made 2 decades ago that we still hold onto like CoD, Halo, CS, Fallout, etc. They were all made as passion projects that never got the respect they deserved from the higher ups until long after those games had bankrolled their companies. The people who used to make games were actually driven and motivated people with any amount of a vision for what they want to create, nowadays you’d be hard pressed to find a AAA dev who has their own opinion on anything, just another office drone that would’ve been content being a paper pusher at some legal firm.
@@trabuco9 but yeah, there is a lot to be said about the people who get hired at AAA studios now. I really do think that the money people now run games companies instead THE PEOPLE MAKING GAMES. This is evident if you watch any of Tim Cain’s UA-cam videos where he describes the process of making modern games, and even the greed that permeated the late 90’s and early 00’s and how it’s gotten worse over time.
They haven't made a game I've really liked it in well over 10 years, but it's still a shame, especially when there were people like IdolNinja at Volition, and the video community team before the reboot were clearly passionate about the games they made (even if they did go quiet post-AoM).

ive been with flippy since agents of mayhem. this almost feels like the true end of an era because flippy has pretty much said everything there could be said about one of my favorite video game franchises of all time. we know saints row literally had the potential to take over GTA as the best open world crime sim series if they put in the work but all that potential was thrown away because volition went the blue pill route, sold out, and made a fool of the series because they didn’t have the confidence to go up against gta. SAN ANDREAS is a gamg simulator where you work your way up from a sellout that ran away in the middle of a gang war to being the leader of the toughest gang in the state. that is literally the formula of saints row but they didn’t build on it.

People have been putting their loyalty into video game developer companies based off of a small handful of games that were made by company, while paying no attention to the people that made these franchises special. For example Bioware has been a corpse with EA as the puppeteer. Mass Effect 2's gameplay suffered almost immediately, the writing was good no doubt, but exploration was gutted heavy. Do I need to even mention Dragon Age 2...

It’s still a job, these publishers don’t see a game. Think about how your boss is asking you to do something. You listen cause they’re paying for you to eat and the community manager was out of line with attacking fans but who really hired them. Volition gone now and only they can say what went wrong with the game. Especially when few who did see the reboot early before releasing the trailer said it was different.
It’s like Gus from Breaking Bad not hesitating to cut a man who work for him throat. Can’t mistake the industry as they’ll take you out without blinking and have you replaced. Doesn’t have to be your fault either cause they called the shots but they say it’s your fault for not being more creative.
It feels like the only option at this point is to put pressure on Deep Silver to either do the right thing or sell the IP. Seems unlikely to work since money is involved. IdolNinja deserves the community's best efforts, even if it is in vain.
There are options if Deep Silver chooses them, 1) there was another developer other than Volition that has experience with SR & worked side x side with
Volition, that being High Voltage.
Or 2) what’s a developer really? Ever hear of David Jaffe? He’s worked for several developers, and created several studios, and regardless of where he goes, Twisted Metal always followed him, the Director is where the series lives and dies, I’d give the license to Clint Ourso, seeing as he directed SR2, the best of the series, but that’s just me.

Saints Row was neglected to then be butchered and they had already finished any business with Red Faction (not that I care *too* much about it, but hey, it's something). it's sad we may or may not ever get anything regarding a patch or remaster or whatever the heck with the old SR games, but with the state the series was at this point, we're basically where we started anyways

It’s depressing that Deep Silver basically interfered with the creative process this early on. Even with the janky combat inherited from AOM, the reboot had aspects like the world design and character customization where you can tell the devs cared. And with the ever growing popularity of true crime you’d figure that a soft Saints Row 2.5 style of game would’ve done great, especially with the enduring popularity of GTA5.
It’s a damn shame the IP is held hostage to one of Embracer Groups dumbest publishers.

This really sucks to hear about. Admittedly I am more of a GTA fan, just seeing a gaming community get rocked like this is hard. I follow a lot of GTA IV mods which seek to improve the game and make the shitty PC port playable and a lot of progress has been made. Rockstar have made a lot of dumb choices which have hurt the community over the years but things still go on in the modding scene. I hope that this doesn't end up causing people to stop caring about improving the game, and if there is any hope left maybe the patch will come out some day. I was actually looking forward to hearing news of this patch because I have wanted to play this game but was put off by the extensive list of mods to get it working properly.

I'm probably one of the biggest reboot hater, the game was bad and wasn't selling too well but it wasn't the reason they went under. They shit all over the franchise with the direction and it's the reason why people are reveling in their shutdown but even despite all that I find it really sad that the reason their studio shut down was not a video game or shitty management with money. It was some random group bullying other dev companies to expand its bubble buying out as many as they can until it just didn't work, forcing random companies to close their doors because of it. A lot of developers lost their jobs to greedy business men being assholes, not because of a failure of game development and even people who make shitty games don't deserve to get thrown on the street because of that.
I've seen a lot of other developers give condolences to the company and the developers for closing, even John Remero said he had listings available for developers so that's good, I just hope a lot of people take out of this that Embracer Group are a bunch of idiots who got the company who made Saints Row, even if it's a shell of its former self, shut down.
About the SR2 fix btw I heard that Deep Silver were trying to get rights from Gearbox to keep the work on it before they went down so I assume the people working on it are still working on it or at least on hiatus right now until the situation gets cleared up since Volition was owned by Gearbox so they didn't have the authority to work on the franchise until both Gearbox and Deepsilver agreed to it. Now that there's no worried "can I do that" "can I do this" from DS, maybe we'll get it in a longer time since there needs to be a bigger dev team? It's up for grabs but it's not as hopeless as it seems I think. I may be a little wrong but I don't think Deep Silver would give up now since they seemed adamant to complete it even after Volition was sold.
To me Volition shutting down feels like if a company like Valve shut down.
We all saw this coming. Game companies often don’t understand players. It seems like with this Saints Row, the higher ups wanted their cake and to eat it to by trying to attract a young audience despite the series having an older fanbase.
What a shame, because Saints Row 2 struck a good balance of being both progressive and very dark and “gangster” at the same time. RIP Volition, it has been many good years.

All they had to do was make a good game (not even a great game) and not take a dump on its dwindling and divided SR 1/2 & 3/4 fanbase, but they couldn't even do that. The only good thing that came out of it was that it band 1/2 & 3/4 fans together to take a dump on the game right back

I say we go the Hat in Time/Bomb Rush Cyberfunk route ...Community made duplication of the game we know and love updated in ways that make sense (More modern 3rd person action & transitions that weren't possible in SR2)

Rockstar is on an entirely different level than Volition. They have multiple successful game titles. Plus GTA has been around for almost 30 years.
