Scariest part is not how his laugh sounds but how he suddenly stops.
It's not a genuine laugh, he's actually angry because Randall made fun of the only guy who was nice to him. When Randall and Gary came to his place, Randall once again made fun of Gary and Arthur killed him.

I don't believe that's what's happening here. That laugh indeed isn't sincere however i don't think its because Arthur is angry for his friend, that is him emulating standard humor. It has already been established at this point that Arthur is socially awkward, hence he puts out a laugh devoid of actual enjoyment because he believes that's what he should do in that circumstance. Similar to the stand up show he attends (to watch not perform), laughing at all the wrong beats.

Man this resonates, the ops manager at work is convinced I was being a dickhead on one of the machine's, I broke it trying to mount a curb, the front two wheels dislodges so I get my senior and tell him immediately, they took it into the shop and the spindles weren't bent, immediately assumed I did it, immediately assumed I was some how being reckless on a fucking ride on lawn mower and assumed I was lying about how it broke.

That’s one of the biggest themes in the movie. There’s so many points where someone, anyone could’ve stepped in and at least alerted authorities or offered help. All the way back to when he was first adopted and abused. It all could’ve been stopped multiple times

Arthur should've snapped back right there, either the boss respects him more, or he's fired, either option is better than the status quo. You don't even have to be aggressive, just ask "what do you think it's more likely, that I stole the sign, or that these guys jumped me?". People like that are usually cowards when it comes to explicitly stating what they're implying.

Randall brought his fate on himself screwing Arthur over and lying to the boss. Should have just left him alone or defended him the same way Arthur lied with the “it’s a prop” excuse.
I may even felt Randall lied about Arthur's sign being stolen and kept it himself. Then taking the opportunity to shortsell him a gun for quick bucks. That's why Randall deserved it in the end.
Actually, Randal set him up and also only went to see him after the investigators sent him. Never spoke to Gary, Randall volunteered information.

I feel like the main reason Hoyt (the boss) blames Arthur for the missing sign is because he personally doesn’t want to cover the damages and just sees him as an easy target to screw over.
Yeah, it's a common thing to do in the workplace
Mentally differentiated people are usually taken advantage of because of their typically generous nature. It's the same thing that a retail employer may tell the younger/newer staff that "You can't take a break now" despite the fact that your breaks are either government or union protected so them refusing to give you proper break times is illegal. They take advantage of the fact that new/young workers don't understand this and won't fight back, just like most employers will easily take advantage and abuse disabled people.
It's kind of why it's hard to watch this movie, it approaches one of the biggest problems with mental "illness" in a direct attack on how society treats people like this. Mentally differentiated people don't fit in to the work environment, as they are taken advantage of and depending in their mind, over work themselves. They won't go to work with the mentality of "coasting" or "it's just a job"
They grew up having to put effort into things, they may have had previous jobs that dropped them because "they don't feel comfortable around you Arthur cause people think your weird, ok? And I can't have that around here." so they always put fourth MORE effort to keep their job.
It's mind boggling that autistic people have to work jobs instead of people just understanding that a disability paycheck is the only real solution our government can handle. But they don't qualify, because "mental disabilities don't effect their ability to do hard labor" despite the reality that no hard labor job is devoid of human interaction that they can handle it, and the idea of making mentally "ill" people do all the physical labor is a bit evil really. Our society demands more Jokers to lash out at the unjust treatment of those with mental "illness" and that's why the media hates this movie. It illustrates how our society uses and abuses the mentally differentiated and won't even make an effort to understand them. We "need" garbage men and construction workers, if we don't have access to some minority to take advantage of, the mentally disabled will work fine.
It's honestly disgusting watching people that work hard get fired from their job for being "weird" which is exactly what happened to Arthur.

It breaks my heart watching this scene because when Randall makes fun of Gary for his size, Arthur has a laughing fit and then immediately goes stone-faced, showing that he is the only one who cares about Gary and vice versa. (As seen later on)
Joker went from “We’re not supposed to have a gun” to killing someone on live tv. He had nothing to lose by that point
The boss says it doesn’t make sense when he hears that the thieves would take Arthur’s sign but when Arthur says that it doesn’t make sense for him to keep it, the boss says he doesn’t know why anyone would do anything. That directly goes against his first statement and shows that he automatically assumes Arthur stole it. That is when that grin starts forming on his face.

I think the reason why ledger is less insane than Phoenix and more calculated and strategic is because in that movie he aged a lot more than this movie. This takes it to a different level, and means that he has matured, and is making attempts to rid the world of what made him who he is, which is the goal of ledgers joker.

I can relate to Arthur. So many people are out for themselves and are selfish beyond belief, they don't care about the consequences of their actions until some of us decide to bite them back, then we get the blame. Egotistical oxygen wasters deserve everything they get.

This movie is written so well, that you literally forget at times that it is about The Joker, a comic book villain. This movie just resonates as an excellent work of fictional writing about a believable character named Arthur.
Also look at the smile at 3:18, you can see that Arthur is nearing his breaking point, he is already starting to lose it.
I don't think Joker is a well written film at all.
maybe because it's not really about the comic book villain, The Joker, but an alternative story assigned to a villain as a backstory to try to give a harrowing lesson.

Sometimes you smile in disbelief, when you're angry and stressed about how is life treating you. He explained his boss what happened and yet his boss is blaming him. That is most likely what he was thinking at that time.

What makes this scene even more painful to watch is because it’s relatable. We literally have been yelled at by some prick, even if they’re our boss, and we have to endure while smiling through the pain. Joaquin really deserved that Oscar.

throughout this whole film not a single person actually listens to him, not his mother about what his laugh really meant, not his doctor about how he was doing, not his boss about his work conditions, randall about him not being allowed a gun, and not the people on the train about his disorder. at the root of it all, all he wanted was to be listened to. the only people in his whole life who ever listened to him were the protestors. its no wonder he ended up the way he did.
he didn't necessarily need a hug, he needed to be listened to.
All Arthur needed was someone he could trust and someone that cared about him

I can relate to this Joker so much. I’m a bit different than other people around my age (21). I don’t have any illnesses, but I don’t follow trends, I don’t drink, i don’t really like to go out, and I don’t have social media. People treat me like crap just because I don’t have/do those things.

Man it's such a shame to think that Randall seemed like such a nice guy at first genuinely trying to help Arthur...that went away real quick

For the real version of this movie, it was a part of his hallucinations, and so, Arthur was the true villain of the movie, cause, he killed Randall for nothing.
