Arthur's effortlessly charismatic stage entrace, the way he dances, shakes Murray's hand, kisses the woman, and waves at the crowd makes it feel like he was just so close to being an actual entertainer, if he'd only had a little better luck, his life would have gone entirely different.
More specifically, if those Wall Street yuppies didn't attack him, forcing Arthur to have no choice but to shoot them; that is when things started going downhill.
@@Madheim777 Yes, exactly. Arthur himself had a social anxiety, he was constantly under stress trying to keep his life together and not get bullied for his conditions. He is so effortlessly entertaining once he finally stops caring about his image and is literally ready to die.
It was the gun that freed him, and allowed him to reflect his views without fear of retribution. All in all he asks to be called joker cause he thought himself a joke, but he really wasn’t into it, he inspired the real Joker though, Jack Napier, that rescues him using the ambulance, and meets him in the alley afterwards. Notice how the real joker gravitates towards things he would later be known for: ambulances and alleys…
No cursing. No off-color material. ... He said nothing about everyday stuff like murder. ... Well, alright, I guess you could call blood the off-color. ... But he won't mind once he has seen the stunning performance and deadpan delivery. 😄🤡
Arthur's main intention was to kill himself in front of a live audience but that scene of him holding a cigarette and that menacing glare, that changed the path and it was Murray that he was going to turn the gun on. If Murray hadn't brought up that video again just to spite and make fun of him, he would have lived.
@Megan Todd Gary was a great friend. Randall is a jerk. The scene where he opened up the door and saw Randall, Arthur looked pissed and then he heard Gary's voice and he looked happy.
There’s something so eerie about the way he stares at the stage, stone faced, while they’re making fun of him at 2:03. He’s spent the entirety of the movie up until this point embarrassed by his inability to control the spectrum of his emotions. But I think it’s at this exact moment, that he decides he’s past the point of having his feelings hurt. He’s finally made the permanent ascension from sadness to rage. He’s no longer looking to please those who have ostracized him his entire life. He’s looking to punish them.
There's a line earlier in the movie, "I used to think that my life was a tragedy, but now I realize, it’s a comedy.", that illustrates that Joker's journey in the movie isn't from sadness to rage - it's from having the world tragically impose itself on him, to imposing himself comedically on the world.
Isnt this what a lot of us go through? Hurting ourself for others mistakes and then coming tk a point where we decide not to let our feelings be hurt. And in turn turning to rage to protect our self
the Joker’s dance right before the curtains went up can also be considered foreshadowing. Arthur danced in the subway restroom after killing the 3 guys that bullied him on the train.
Ten seconds of Joaquin Phoenix staring at the stage while smoking a cigarette is more compelling than Jared Leto’s entire performance in Suicide Squad.
I cant get over the body language. This is real life Joker I imagined him to be, he embodied it perfectly! I was a bit uncomfortable watching a real version of him when I was watching this in the theatre. Joaquin is genius! A master!!
@@billukhan2954They are both equally as good. The look that Director Todd Phillips had in mind of a Joker origin story about a man driven to madness after being shunned by society was nailed by Phoenix. Christopher Nolan wanted a more comic book based chaos agent Joker, who was there to break Gotham's spirit, pushing the Batman to his absolute limit as a hero, and this role was nailed by Ledger. They are both perfect actors for what their films intended them to be. There is no one that is better, because these are two completely different films. Even Phoenix himself bowed in respect to Ledger when he was receiving his awards.
the makeup room scene is Arthur talking to Murray, he's nice got that friendly vibe but the moment he's waiting for his introduction thats when The Joker enter
I still feel so bad for Joker every time I see this scene. Throughout the movie, he really looked up to Murray and admired him. Then he realized his idol just thought of him as a joke and wanted him on the show just to humiliate him. It's absolutely heartbreaking that he's backstage, behind the curtains, and still having to hear Murray, his guests, and the audience making fun of him and laughing at him before he goes on stage.
this guy need a psychiatric treatment, dude, and not pity, every balanced and adult person know that tv is just crap, and the people that work in tv is crap too, if an adult think that any famous tv worker is a great guy is clearly wrong, the joker was a absolute sick man, dude, is not something to feel bad or any other shit, the man was TERRIBLE SICK, nobody kill anyone just cos he is in anger with the other person, THAT IS SICK, balanced and healthy person can manage the frustration, the anger etc in a godd way, but this joker just was a fucking psycho

This is one scene that explains why the joker isn't afraid to die, he actually made the decision to end his life, but his hatred for society made him delay his suicide. Yes, the only thing holding back his decision to commit suicide is seeking revenge against society
2:04 is one of the best scenes in this entire movie. Stone-faced and silent, but inside he's fuming at being made fun of. How you can see the intense anger in his eyes. Perfect acting.

@Your Totally Real Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Joaquin is a very sensitive man, you could feel his emotions in his speech, that's one of the many reasons he's an incredible actor, he catalyze those emotions with his acting.
How tf did the sequel forget this pivotal scene? He didn't create "Joker" as a split personality, it's literally his own personality making an intentional statement against Murray.
Because is a personality born out of trauma to protect arthur from abuse once it becomes clear joker wont protect arthur from abuse arthur renounces the joker
The sequel even rebukes the idea and acts like Arthur only ever was Joker for the attention, that it's not who he really is. But here you see that's clearly not the case. It's for himself, it was always for himself. It's what gives him confidence and finally a sense of freedom and rebellion. He rejects the idea that it was a statement, a revolutionary cry. He thinks it's funny that people have rallied around him and he did what he did because it made him feel good. Joker 2 is a complete contradiction, it does not match.

No that’s not when Murray died because after that scene Joker continuous to practise his bit where he would commit suicide in front of the audience for the laughs. Murray died in the 2:00, because he invited him on the show, and he still humiliated him
Robert De Niro doesn't get enough attention for his role as Murray. he perfectly portrayed the typical guy who acts and seems like a nice, cunning, and soft dude, but in reality gets away with stuff like mocking and making fun of his guests, kind of like Ellen Degeneres.
Murray is the opposite of Ellen Degeneres. He's nice backstage, but his stage character is to mock other people for entertainment. Ellen seems nice on stage, but she's apparently a prick backstage.

3:25 I love that he kisses the old lady after she said "Does he have sexual problems?" just a minute prior in 2:00. Such a great way for the Joker to say "fuck you"
The movements Arthur does behind the curtain from 2:25 to 2:54 is like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. The Joker emerging from Arthur. Arthur is dead. Long live the Joker. This movie is utterly amazing !
100% agreed. I believe it was at this point Arthur fully transitioned into Joker. After that, we never see Arthur again, only the clown prince of crime
This scene was so heartbreaking The entire show all Arthur wanted was to make people laugh and be a good performer. Now finally he is relaxed, confident, happy and after he has let go of everything he is charming the audience, everybody loves him, and they go nuts when he does the spin, dance and kiss. even Murray is impressed. He now has everything he ever wanted but it is too late he is too far gone.
Yes, if you watch the work of Carl jung, he says that we have two main personalities, one that we show to the world and the other that we hide because society told us that it was a bad personality. This personality is often more violent, more sexual, more free etc... And Carl jung says that we should try to integrate some of that behavior into the personality that we show to the world. That is what the main character of fight club manage to do. But in joker, the hidden personality takes all the control.
i know a million other people have said something similar already but the shot of him smoking behind the scenes watching murray make fun of him is truly something special. it's like i'm literally looking at the joker and not some actor playing the joker. and with the context of what we've seen before, that shot alone says so many things without a line of dialogue, it's nothing short of genius. if todd philips can catch lightning a second time with the sequel to this masterpiece he will have my respect forever.
The moment he’s behind stage smoking and listening to the audience watching and laughing at his failure is truly a masterpiece. You can tell how hurt he is by his cold stare. It was then he saw Murray not as his hero, but an enemy that must be dealt with.
LMAO you need to watch more movies then. Thats always the problem with fans of hero/villain films. They get in a bubble and think any movie related to DC/marvel are the only ones worth watching. There are no risks taken in these movies, every plot advancement gets thrown up and then spoon-fed to you. Boring cinematography too. I finish every superhero movie wishing I would've watched my grass grown instead because it makes me feel just as mindless.
Interesting point, the director said that dance scene of him in the bathroom was a meditative way of coping & an escape. I still wonder if killing Murray was an impulse, or at what point he decided not to kill himself?
You can see the rage in Arthur's eyes when they played back that clip just to take the piss out of his condition. I can imagine how angry he was deep down inside to be laughed at for something he had no control over. All he ever wanted was to make people laugh only to get the opposite.
I think Murray making fun of Joker was the straw that broke the camel's back. Like that was his breaking point to do something like this. I feel bad for the guy.
Daryl Lander the clip is making a mockery out of Arthur. Playing it once was bad enough for him, but at that point Murray basically rubbed it in. It’s bullying essentially.
Yeah... of all of his laughs in the film, this one is the most unsettling 😅 All the other laughs seemed like a man breaking or trying to form his identity. This laugh is definitely the laugh of a serial killer who gets off on killing and unsettling people

2:02 is one of my favourite shots in cinema history. That’s Joker all over. Colourful background, the smokey chaos and the deadpan face of a seriously disturbed individual.
The thing people misunderstood about the movie, is that he is not descending into madness. He is getting out of it. As he goes forward, he has less delusions about an imaginary relationship, less uncontrollable laughter and more self confidence and control over himself. He is becoming normal, in a crazy world.
Yeah no lol 😂 the point of the movie is it's his narrative. The real events probably didn't go down like this, probably similar, but this is what he was seeing. It's literally a character study. I don't think anyone who would laugh about taking a life is normal 😂 . He's a living delusion, that's what makes him Batman's greatest foe. He's the hero of his own story. Him and Batman are both madmen , with opposing goals. Batman is exactly what you described. Everyone thinks he's strange, he just sees the world for what it is. Joker just be talking out his ass but sees the world as he perceives. Far from normal
@@keytrononit3 I did not say he became a good person, he is just starting to fit into what is normal in Gotham. Yea, in a more comic book style world it could work better. But as hard as it is, try to empathize with him a little. He was constantly victimized by everyone, and taken for a loon. He wanted to commit suicide in public, so maybe people would understand how miserable he feels. Instead, he kills someone, which means he finally started to express his hatred outward, not inward. Again, he did not became a good person, he just taken control, and did what he wanted, with no regrets.
I like how his initial intent was to off himself as punishment for all his problems but something twist in his mind and turn it against everybody else, as if a realization struck his mind, that the problem is not him is the city.
2:02 there came that realisation. That he would forever be a joke as Arthur fleck. It was time instead to make a mockery of the world and people and be born again as joker with that transformation dance
I know it seems really dark but i was hoping for him start going of at the people in the show to but it would have been probably to much to handle for a lot of people already hating on this masterpiece!
This scene makes me sad for a couple reasons. Arthur was soo anxious yet, still,, despite everything, excited to meet Murray, Sure Murray had already insulted him on live TV and therefore betrayed Arthur in Arthurs mind already but part of me feels like Arthur was still holding out the smallest bit of hope that Murray would be nice to him in person, but then he gets hit with "What's with the face?" At 00:16 ) You can in that moment see the heartbreak and disappointment in his eyes. I mean, damn.
The part where Arthur tells Murray to call him Joker and Murray not remembering actually hits me hard. Murray called Arthur a Joker and that stuck with him ever since. Worst part is, Murray didn't even remember. Arthur was literally planning to kill himself right in front of him. In reality, we say stuff to other people all the time but we don't know how the people we're talking to takes it. We may not have meant it or even remember, but the people we talk to take it really seriously which leads to depression, anxiety, etc. This shows how your choice of words can really impact a person with potentially dangerous consequences. These little comments and insults can really damage a person. I think we as a society need to think what we say before and/or whether how they'll take it. Just be more considerate and polite. Is that too much to ask?
@@Brian-gk1cd Hmmm Joker isn't a nickname in this case It is more of a transformation or more of a process of metamorphosis Arthur was sick of it and then In the scene right before the curtains are opening he twitches which is showing his metamorphosis into Joker. Not yet IMO, he just feels embarrassing when the clip keeps showing and he really don't want to "laugh" because of his conditions, he tries to keep calm and prepare for the show.
lawlaw 91 Naw, I agree with the original comment. He definitely decided right then and there that he was gonna kill Murray. You can just see it on his face. He wasn’t calm at all in that moment, he was angry. When he went on stage, he just played along with everything for a little bit and then he unraveled.
o0Desimere0o not yet, he changed his mind during the interview, he realized he wasn’t being heard anymore and you can see through Joaquin’s amazing performance that he starts to lose control, and you can see the moment in his face when he decides to kill Murray, you can see his descent into complete madness as he loses complete control
@1:15. The way he said “That’s what you called me; a ‘joker’” there’s the slightest hint of resentment in his voice that Murray doesn’t pick up on because Arthur is smiling while he says it. Phoenix did a phenomenal job in this movie. Right up there with Heath in my opinion.
@Caspean Sea That's subjective as I think both Heath And Joaquin did a terrific job portraying this character but I still prefer Heath just slightly more.
@The Riddler No, Nicholson played the best comic book Joker, and Joaquin wasn't a modernized Joker he was more of a 80s Joker while Ledger and Leto are the modernized Joker.
This movie represents everything i like in cinema: Character development, emotions journey, good cinematography, amazing acting, a perfect color palette and original score. What a masterpiece, every superhero movie should be an exploration of the character as a person rather than an explotion of weapons and meaningless action scenes. Diving into human emotions is poetry and pure art, and this movie is all about that.

@Hitler Loves Anime it’s a theory that goes as Murray might have MPD or multiple personality disorder. And the joker is one of his “personalities” it would explain why Arthur thought some things to be real (like with his “girlfriend”) when in reality it’s the complete opposite. Just a theory, but a pretty solid one at that
@@katatonikbliss yep, but also no. Different personalities, same body. But that’s just a theory. No full on evidence other then heresay and the way the movie was presented.

2:35 what a scene. What a symbolisation of the state of Arthur's mind. He is almost lost in his own confused utopia that exists only and only in his mind- an absolutely beautiful catastrophic world. And the two technicians next to him have no idea and never can understand the chaotic mental state that exists within Arthur. He's a complete different entity, almost an idealistic artist believing in morals while existing in a modern 'civil' prison where people are blind to emotions and only see wealth and popularity.
People always say things like this. "Arthur's not a good person, and that's what makes him free. He's beautiful. It's everyone else who is ugly slaves"
2:03-2:18 The palpable, silent rage combined with sadness/disgust as he smokes while watching his idol make fun of him, is some elite acting by Joaquin Phoenix. Such a phenomenal actor.
I think that Joaquin is just perfect for a character like Joker.. because you can just sense from him as a person that he has some of his insecurities and vulnerability as well. The way he does interviews, how shy he is, how thoughtful and barely ever smilling or laughing. He always seems just kinda tense. He does not like to be in the public and he appears to be a very focused and dedicated person to acting. He also has a history of depression and dealing with loss since his brother died. I think that Joaquin is just one of those kinda tired or even broken individuals who are dealing with too much behind their eyes from day to day basis. Which makes him ideal adept for a character like Joker.
The poetically disturbing aspect of joker that I love, is the fact that he was a terrible comedian as Arthur (Or whatever alias you perfer) but only because he lacked confidence. The joker persona unleashed his inner potential to be a great comedian, but his jokes are now sadistic and crude. It was like Joker is his true self, and without fear he expresses himself truly and therefore convincingly, although barbaric.
"is the fact that he was a terrible comedian as Arthur (Or whatever alias you perfer) but only because he lacked confidence." Please, comedy isn't about confidence. A bad comedian with huge confidence *is still a bad comedian* . Fact is people tend to find those "I'm-obviously-the-funniest-comedian-ever" types who are full of themselves to be downright annoying. "The joker persona unleashed his inner potential to be a great comedian" More nonsense. HOW? Some people aren't funny and don't have any potential. In the film it's repeatedly shown that Joker/Arthur Fleck doesn't understand what parts are punchlines and what parts are just observations leading up to the joke. Confidence isn't his issue (and most people talking about confidence being the solution to all problems are usually *narrowminded simpletons and idiots* ) his issue is that his mind is damaged beyond repair due to being subjected to some incredibly cruel treatment by his mother and her lovers. He wants to laugh and be funny because his life has always been about pain, but the bottom line is that he simply doesn't understand what people (in general) consider funny. He even admits late in the movie that his own humor isn't like other people's humor but humor shouldn't be the same for everyone. "but his jokes are now sadistic and crude." Then it's not humor to anybody but himself. Which *drumroll* ... *makes him disturbed* . "It was like Joker is his true self, and without fear he expresses himself truly and therefore convincingly" And here your ship sinks below the surface. What is this utter nonsense about him feeling FEAR for comedy? He frickin' laughed whenever he was suffering or actually crying. He made odd observations of what people "consider funny" at stand up comedy shows. People all showed him angry, annoyed, upset or indifferent faces. He hated that and wanted to see them smile and laugh. There was no fear in him for pulling his clumsy jokes. He wrongly believed he was funny when most people were just put off by him. Worse many were cruel and took advantage of his damaged personality when they should have provided support or help to him. "although barbaric." Your entire comment is barbaric. What are your qualifications if I may ask? It's very clear you have zero understanding of people, the human psyche and just superimpose your own fears and myopic narrative onto anything. My guess is some chimp told you could achieve anything with confidence and you believed him. Hence this is your bizarre interpretation of the movie. Your deduction leaves a lot to be desired. You're claiming that a disturbed man who had suffered all his life had "potential" to be a great comedian but failed because he lacked confidence (these are *your words* ) but then when he snapped and became homicidal and spread fear he suddenly had the "confidence" (which is an observation an alien from another world would make) to be funny - except now this is just crazy murders (and obviously not funny to anybody but him). 3:00 Confident, energetic, creepy and unpredictable. You'd swear this was the Joker himself pulled right out of the comic.
Exactly one of the reasons why I hate the second one
The Joker is also a criminal master mind....I could never see this joker pulling that off
There’s something so eerie about the way he stares at the stage, stone faced, while they’re making fun of him at 2:03.
And the whole time his laughing condition never flared up once that dance was completely joker taking over
Isnt this what a lot of us go through? Hurting ourself for others mistakes and then coming tk a point where we decide not to let our feelings be hurt. And in turn turning to rage to protect our self
the Joker’s dance right before the curtains went up can also be considered foreshadowing. Arthur danced in the subway restroom after killing the 3 guys that bullied him on the train.
I would love to do the same
Ten seconds of Joaquin Phoenix staring at the stage while smoking a cigarette is more compelling than Jared Leto’s entire performance in Suicide Squad.

Way better than ledger
@@billukhan2954 joaquin is good, but you're out of your mind if you think he's better than ledger brother

ToxicSkull0 that quote is from Scareface.
That confidence and unpredictability when he walks on stage is pure Joker. Like it's not even Arthur anymore.
You see him transform in front of the curtain. There's even a trick of the light which makes his red/magenta suit look purple.
the makeup room scene is Arthur talking to Murray, he's nice got that friendly vibe but the moment he's waiting for his introduction thats when The Joker enter
He thought these were his last minutes - for he was about to kill himself -, so he wasn't stressed, like nothing matters anymore.
His transformation always starts from his left. See how he raises his left arm in the beginning of the dance. It's a transference that is happening.
That's because Arthur's no longer there, Joker is born to the world at that moment
I think Joker realized this when he left the dressing room to stand behind the curtain.
At first I thought people laughed cuz they loved it. But it’s the total opposite right?
Kamen Yake well Murray broadcasted Arthur’s video to make fun of him,so yeah, the opposite. (Or both)

How tf did the sequel forget this pivotal scene? He didn't create "Joker" as a split personality, it's literally his own personality making an intentional statement against Murray.
That's the reason the sequel is not canon in my book

For some reason I thought he was doing a de niro impression.
You can tell right here he already decided that he was gonna kill him 2:09
I like to think he doesn’t decide to kill him until like 30 seconds before he does it. He was planning on shooting himself until then, that’s what it felt like
I think he decides it right at the knock-knock joke, when he reads “I just hope my death makes more cents than my life”
It was at this very moment that Joker knew he wouldn't be killing himself.
Leto: Kids Joker
Ledger: Teenagers Joker
Phoenix: Men's Joker
Leto: brain dead people
Literally every other joker: People with two brain cells

2:02 is one of my favourite shots in cinema history. That’s Joker all over. Colourful background, the smokey chaos and the deadpan face of a seriously disturbed individual.

The music is perfect for the clip I think.

2:29, nice head nod to the original Joker. Check out the color of his jacket 👀

Good eye!
The thing people misunderstood about the movie, is that he is not descending into madness. He is getting out of it. As he goes forward, he has less delusions about an imaginary relationship, less uncontrollable laughter and more self confidence and control over himself. He is becoming normal, in a crazy world.
I like to think he’s not becoming normal, just self aware.
That’s correct
Rofl OK
I like his expressions when Murray tells him the rules. It's like a kid watching his idol talking. Such great actors!
I love that part of the scene.
I like how his initial intent was to off himself as punishment for all his problems but something twist in his mind and turn it against everybody else, as if a realization struck his mind, that the problem is not him is the city.
Yeah
Or the Society
2:02 there came that realisation. That he would forever be a joke as Arthur fleck. It was time instead to make a mockery of the world and people and be born again as joker with that transformation dance
It was the part where he found out about what his mom did that made the twist
I know it seems really dark but i was hoping for him start going of at the people in the show to but it would have been probably to much to handle for a lot of people already hating on this masterpiece!
Ledgers Joker: *Creates Madness*
Joaquin Joker: *Madness creates him*
I mean, I say "I made you" you gotta say "you made me." I mean, how childish can you get?
Nicholson joker: was already mad. Falling into criminals just made him worse.
Leto joker: drives viewers mad.
The Joker was just giving back to the community...
Ledgers joker got a lot of suicide pity was never that good.

@@bobiprayoga186 Thanks 😊 Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case, Thanks, Murray. Lol.
@@zs3436 now you gone too far bro😂
I love how he actually was true to his word and introduced him as joker
Well he didn't remember his actual name so not sure what else he would've called him lol

2:04 I think he changed his mind about killing himself at this moment and decided to kill Murray instead

@1:15.

The palpable, silent rage combined with sadness/disgust as he smokes while watching his idol make fun of him, is some elite acting by Joaquin Phoenix.

A classroom clown*
Priceless!
