When asked about violence in the R-rated film, Todd Phillips said, "Violence in the movie was always meant to be a slow burn. People assume and think it's going to be a really violent movie; it affects you differently. You could watch something like John Wick 3 and there's a much higher amount of violence. We tried to paint it with as realistic a brush as possible so that when it comes it feels like a punch in the stomach. But it's all a balancing act of tone." And when asked about tone, "I think movies are oftentimes mirrors of society, but never molders. We wrote it in 2017 so inevitably certain themes find their way in." When he continued, "It's not a political film" there was laughter in the press room, and he added "for some I think it depends the lens which you view it through."

Guns
Badut stres
This was so hard to watch. Like look at him, he enjoyed playing with kids, he loves make people laugh, he was a good guy
AbuShakhman Serik good guys don’t bring guns into the hospital on the job and then lie about it
@@poker8100 he took the gun for self defense and he surely didn't had any bad intentions. He didn't plan to hurt kids or smth, for him it was normal to keep the weapon because he doesn't understand that's it's not really right due to his illness. Maybe he even forgot about it cause he was happy
AbuShakhman Serik he knew full well of the dangers of the gun. Before this scene he accidentally fired it in his house and got frightened that he could have killed himself.
poker8100 Having that gun with him saved arthurs life when he was getting beaten up by those three guys on the subway. Yeah saying the gun was a prop wasn’t a good idea but remember arthur told his boss about street punks giving him a beating and destroying his sign but he didn’t believe arthur.
Yep, he genuinely enjoyed making people smile. Like Chris Farley said, he's a clown but he cries
Arthur seems to have a soft spot for children:
1. He looks legitimately happy at the children's hospital and he was on the verge of tears after he got fired over this. Entertaining children is why he loved that job.
2. He stopped strangling Alfred when he realized Bruce was watching.
3. He didn't kill Sophie or her daughter.
4. Playing with the black kid on the train.
David Gerstein I thought he did kill Sophie, cause the scene after that was him laughing in his apartment while a ambulance pulls up outside, also the way they showed him leaving her apartment was sus
@@TheLovelyPotato1 director Todd Philips told he didn't kill Sophie and her daughter.
@@TheLovelyPotato1 He didn't kill Sophie or her daughter. Todd Phillips himself said so.

children generally represent innocence, Arthur was abused as a kid (even if he didn't know it) hence he's subconsciously sensitive to them

Now I can imagine him beating Jason while playing "If you're happy and you know it".
I was worried that the gun was gonna go off when it hit the floor and hit one of the kids.
Or when he quickly picked it up, he might accidently trigger the gun.

Even more compelling than just a villain
I just have this scene in mind that he immediately meets with a nurse before leaving.
"Sorry about that back there, it's a realistic water pistol for a later show."
I wonder how that might have gone.
Maybe for a guy who is sharp could have handled the situation well. But it's Arthur, and it's a .38, I believe. The sound of metal that came out when the gun dropped on the floor was enough for Arthur and the nurses to get afraid. Not to forget the crime rate in Gotham that could make any random person suspicious.
And I wondered why Arthur was in a phone booth not Hoyt's office. Did he leave the hospital then call Hoyt to tell him what happened himself? Because the way I would picture it happening in real life is the hospital patrons tell Hoyt about the gun and Hoyt meets Arthur in person
@@jaelie8398 he was in the booth because the hospital authorities informed Hoyt. Plus, as a daily wage worker, the fear of losing his only job was enough for Arthur to talk to him without any delays.

Arthur should've told him it was for self defense, living in such a crime ridden city like Gotham.
Hoyt wouldn’t had believed in him anyway as he would had brought up Randell, thought Arthur could had say that Randell gave him the gun for self defense
I firmly believe that this scene is a homage to the scene in The Dark Knight when the Joker and Two-Face are in Gotham Hospital and the Joker brings out a gun to illustrate his point about how chaos is caused by order being disrupted. The only difference is that that time, the Joker actually meant to reveal his gun.

This scene pairing was an excellent juxtaposition of tragedy, comedy and drama. Really brilliant piece of filmaking.
When I first saw this I almost jumped out of the seat going, "Wtf!"
I think Arthur really does care about kids and I love the way he improvised with the comedy to them to try and style it out !
I absolutely love how they take a song that's innocent and child friendly in this case it's the song If You're Happy and You Know It but it somehow has a very eerie feel to it

That would be an awesome description of the Joker as a character:

Remember this movie is set before the evil clown archetype became a thing. It was even before Pennywise's debut.
CYSYS8993 there was Jon Wayne
Honestly, there's a big reference and meaning behind it. Remember in the ORIGINAL Batman movie, when Joker dances on that church's top? He pulls out a gun which says "BANG" . And it is like a.. comedic scene type thing. Y'know what I mean? And him referrencing "It's a part of my show" ( I forgot what he said just a second ago when I watched this, and I am a lazy idiot to look again. ) It gave me memories. Lmao. I am not very sure if it had to do with anything with it. But man come on, it's memories from childhood.

This was the saddest scene in the movie for me… he was happy for the first time in the movie because he made those kids happy. And it was taken away from him. The pleading in his voice when he says *”I love this job!”* It’s absolutely heartbreaking.
This scene put me on edge. Just the depressing setting with happy music to those with a bleak future.

this is such a good origin for joker. his innocent and sad "randall told you that ?" feeling betrayed by a friend. of course this with all the other shit going on in his life he wasn't gonna take it one way or the other
This scene is fucking hilarious. Why do people take it so seriously?
The part when he drops the gun is serious
Because it's really sad.
Being a party clown and entertaining kiss who are sick and injured in hospital was the only thing that made him happy and life worth it for him. And that one mistake of having his gun slip out of his pocket and then for his co-worker to stab him in the back by not taking accountability for giving him the gun, caused him to get fired. He lost it all and that is what lead to his breakdown.
The only thing that made him genuily happy was taken away from him.
