The only criticism I got, is: I can´t give more the one like. You were very, very helpful in my decision to choose this cam. Best regards from your country´s twin 'in name only' from another continent.
Hi mate! Great video of one of the greatest lenses in the small L-Mount-Universe. You layed out the characteristics very well and you showed, that the AF works better than all the critcs think . That confirms my findings. Especially the 35mm is a heck of a lens. Keep on producing great Lumix stuff. Maybe one day the world will recognize the potential of this system... Take care!!
I only learned of this channel during your Q&A Tuesday (September 20). Great to have this for reference. I started shooting Nikon 35MM in 1968. I shoot basically stills and am heavily invested in Nikon Lenses since I'm still shooting Nikon. I said that to say this, since people know I love my Nikon's, they constantly ask me what I recommend. I tell them if you want to shoot video, not just stills, there are better choices available than Nikon. From now on, I'm going to tell them to refer to your channel!!! Great info, Shane. It's nice to have a willing accomplice (or as I usually say, "partner in crime") like Rhyannon, and of course, it's great seeing Brave making his appearances. While, I love my Nikon's, I only shoot stills. There is so much more today's products offer, and thank you for keeping us informed!! Please keep the great videos coming.
So now since you are a Panasonic Ambassador (Congratulations BTW) I own the 20-60mm kit lens with the S5II, 50mm & 85mm f/1.8 primes. I am interested in buying the 18mm, 24mm and 35mm in a full frame. Any recommendations? Cheers!
I’m not an official ambassador but I do review their gear. That term meant folks only using Linux gear, I use the stuff I enjoy from any brand. The a combination of these primes depending on the job. For most sit down studio shots I’m using the 35mm for everything else the 24 and 50 would be my first choices. The 24mm in APSC mode works out to 36mm so it’s pretty much giving you that middle one. The primes are so great I am away right now and I have the 24 and 50 with me it covers so much.
Enjoyed this side-by-side of the various lenses. Just acquired the S5 and the 50mm f1.8. My initial impression was that it is smooth (for lack of a better description) and not so sterile. But seeing your setup for the lens focal length comparisons, it appears you inadvertently added a bokeh torture test. Some of the bokeh looks nervous (as some describe it) and a little unpleasant. After re-watching the video and studying how the bokeh looks at various subject distances, it seems the nervousness is limited to a somewhat narrow range (with subject is further from the camera). This provides some opportunity to work around it if one is at a location and finds it objectionable. Otherwise, I really like the 50mm I have, but not so certain I'd add another at this point. To be fair, I did get into the Lumix S system to use with vintage lenses; that said, it is nice to have at least one decent AF lens on hand. I like the build quality save the soft rubber focus ring which attracts dust like there's no tomorrow, and for which I worry it will degrade and become tacky (as has happened on some of my other equipment). I'd prefer solid, ribbed plastic or the type of hard rubber like what's found on the Zeiss Contax lenses.... but that's just one opinion.
Thanks for this comprehensive review. You cover all the ground anyone would likely be curious about and don't get hung up on pixel peeping details that only a select few will fuss over. I have a S1H with the great, albeit heavy, Lumix S 24-70 lens. I won't fly that on my gimbal and so I'm leaning towards the 35mm lens. I use the FF/Super 35 modes quite often, which will add versatility to the prime lenses. Q: Although these primes don't have a "clutch" focus ring option, does the linear focus work as well as on the 24-70 lens? That feature on the 24-70 lens really makes manual focus-by-wire tolerable, and to some degree usable with a follow focus.
Thanks for the kind words. The 35mm is my favorite of the bunch and works amazing on a gimbal situation. The field of view makes it really easy to frame and keep up with the subject. :). Focus pulls are repeatable as long as your camera has the linear focus settings mode for it. I have no problems with it handheld. I haven't tried the 24-70 so I can't compare the two, sorry.
Great review! For my eyes, the 50 mm variant had best looking bokeh. Maybe getting 24 mm and 50 mm lenses + switching between full frame and APS-C crop would be the most cost effective solution?
Amazing stuff, Shane!! I love Panasonic for video sooo much. I’ve been trying to get a hold of anyone from Panasonic here in Canada to show off their cameras but no luck!! At least I get to watch these great reviews from down under!!
Thanks, Mark. I ended up trading my last original GH5 to get another S5 haha. I still have the GH5II and GH5s but the full frame image quality with these lenses is a huge incentive to swap some of the older cams. I think you'd dig the S5 mate! :)
Hey Mark I watched so many of your Douggy videos but the Sony ZV E-10 has not been in stock in Europe for months. Guess they don't make much profit to "waste" a limited supply chip in there. I am close to buying a Panasonic Lumix S5. There is a 200 Euro Cashback offer. I have about 2 weeks to decide...
Great video. You re very serious, you explain things perfect and simple as well and, the most important, you re polite person Congratulations. As for the lenses, yes they re great. I use Panasonic for about 10 years. For me they re the best! The very best! I prefer the 50 and 85 mm . Just awesome.
Amazing video my friend, the autofocus is pretty good actually. The 85mm and 35mm are stunish lenses in video and photo. I would love to see how these lenses performance in the S1 camera. Greetings from Mexico
I want to buy a S5II, and a fixed lens. I hesitate bêtement the 35 and the 50 mm. Do you think that,in post,in Da Vinci, I’ll be able to play with the cropping, to obtain a similar result as if it would be shot with a zoom lens?
You could just shoot in the 4K APSC mode with the 35mm and it would be very close to the 50mm without losing resolution. It might look a hair different but it will work. The 50mm lens has a really great look to the background blur though but it means moving the camera back further.
Really great review. I currently have the Meike FF lenses on my S5 and was thinking if picking some of these lenses up but every review is see seems to suffer from the same weird backgrounds. If you look at 3:28 and look behind her face and the green bushes in the back , look almost like an oil painting. Ive taken similar videos with the Meike and they don't do this at all.
Thanks for this, Shane. So far it's the only review on the lens set. Assuming you have contacts with Panasonic, have you considered suggesting they sell the full combo, with a discount, as a filmmaker's kit? Seems to me their marketing team needs to wake up a bit.
Really good showcase of the lens lineup. It boggles my mind that more companies don't do the APS-C crop mode, it should really be a 'zoom feature' if you ask me because you have the resolution, why not? Do you have any of the others outside of the 50mm and kit lens? Seems like the 24 and 35mm make great studio and field lenses. Quality looks awesome. Maybe Panasonic still has some legs left in this industry?
This lens lineup is a huge help for their system. It's basically most of the of the focal ranges that people want and need at a more affordable price. The image quality out of these cameras is suburb and the functionality is also good enough that before even getting my hands on the lenses, I got another S5. Panasonic has become more of a niche product with the exception of the GH series but the overall aesthetic of these cameras and lenses I prefer over the Sony I own. That's just me though. :)
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Very true. Have the G9 and G7 and a couple cheaper Olympus bodies plus the ZV-1 and Doug (ZV-E10) and I have to say, Sony is a bit sad, the experience is just lifeless and control of the cameras is not ideal. Panasonic really knows video shooters. If only OM System had a G9 Mark II of their own. It'd be absolutely killer!
@@KPGuitarStudios Agreed. After getting the Sony FX3 (which is great) and the A7C, they feel very boring to use and still don't have half of the features of the Panasonic's from 2017. :). It'll be interesting to see what OM/Olympus does down the track.
Solid look at these lenses. I have the 50 and am very happy with it. Also excited for the 35, and 18 release. The dual Native ISO in the S5 is so great.
Hi again, Shane. Thanks for the video. I am still gobsmacked at how well the continuous autofocus worked for the walking shots of you and Rhiannon. I have both an S1 and an S5 and the Panasonic 24-105 f/4 and the AF is generally unreliable (shooting in V-LOG at 30fps). What kind of magic were you using to get the autofocus to work so well? And have you continued to experience usable autofocus since making this video? I know you mentioned one-area and that is what I usually use - in conjunction with the face-tracking option available in one area - and the continuous autofocus performance still makes me want to cry like a three-year-old kid.
He used natural profile. But for vlog i nlticed using a view lut helps to focus better. As it gives more contrast. I also have 24 105 and wonder how betrer the primes are at af.
I've posted a video about my autofocus settings recently. It's called decoding the Panasonic Autofocus. I do use the Natural profile to save time (and it looks great) and the increased shutter speeds can help the AF work better (or faster frame rates).
I’m new to using different lenses and just brought the 50mm prime lens but didn’t realise it’s for the s series as I has a lumix g7 is there a certain adapter I could get or nah?
@@GeekyNerdyTechy yeah I had to do some more research and there isn’t so I’ve returned it. Thank you for the recommendations and most definitely will go with one of those.
Hi what is the setting you recommend for the original S5 to shoot person who would be in the same position and I will go around closer and further of the person and still wants to keep the person in focus. My biggest issue with my S5 is when I move away or closer from the person the camera loses focus and I want have focus when I move around my subject. What I experience is that instantly when I move away or closer to the subject after snaping focus the camera starts losing focus and starts hunting. I don't even move faster than your wife when she moves towards the camera. What is the BEST focus setting for this scenario on the ORIGINAL S5?
Aperture Priority mode and put the AF speed +2 and see how you go. If you stop down to 2.8 it can also drastically increase the AF speed on the original S5.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks. Will that keep focus on the subject better? Well I am a bokeh freak so stopping down to 2.8.. :D I use the same lenses you use in this video. 50mm and 85mm only. What about one area mode with human detect? And if I set the AF speed to minus or plus? I didn't touch the settings for AF at all.
Awesome, Michael. I hope you enjoy it. The 35mm is a great choice thanks to it covering up to 50mm with that APSC crop. The 50mm is pretty amazing as well especially for the background separation.
When you switch to APS-C mode, doesn’t it just crop? You may get a different FOV, but you get less light hitting the sensor because it’s a full frame image circle versus using a lens with an image circle for APS-C, right? I would think it would like using an APS-C lens on a M43 sensor without a speed booster.
4k uses 8megapixel anyway. No matter if you shoot in crop or normal mode. S5 got dual iso and a 1.8 lense is 1.8 no matter what. You will never have low light problems with the s5.
@@andersistbesser I'm sure the low light would be fine, but isn't the point of a speed booster to get more light onto the sensor? Like the metabones APS-C to M43 adapter? If there was some sort of adapter for FF to APS-C, then use the APS-C mode on the S5, wouldn't that give you more light? This is just a theoretical question and less of "I'm worried about low light" question.
@@elephantgrass631 boosters are made to give a wider firld of view. The better low light is a side effect because it makes the lense faster. A full frame sensor gathers more lightthan a small sensor anyway.
Depends on your needs. Try the kit lens and see which focal length you like. The 35mm is my favorite but that doesn't mean anything if it doesn't suit your needs.
If you use the Kit at 20mm you shouldn't have to correct the balance much. That won't be the case if you use it zoomed in. All of the primes are physically the same size and basically the same weight making it easy just to swap them out on my Ronin S without rebalancing.
I have the 85mm. It doesn't focus well wide open and it won't focus very close up. Otherwise, it's beautiful and I am very happy with it! I am planning on getting the 35mm also.
Great video and awesome footage! Exactly what I need to know, because I am deciding what to put on my S5 with a gimbal. I prefer the 24mm, so for 50p I am wide enough with 35mm to frame properly. One question: the low light scenes are captured with native 4000 iso. That's the native iso for v-log. Did you shoot these scenes in v-log or like before in natural?
The entire video was shot in the natural profile. I get pretty much the exact look I am going for without having to do anything in editing. Vlog at 4000 also looks really good but you still get great noise free low light in the normal profiles.
great video! Can I ask you for low light scene with moving objects (fast dancing people) which lens is the best? Thank you .... note: I already have 50mm 1.8 and i like it.
All of the 1.8 lenses are good for low light. It really depends on how close you are to the subjects but the 24mm is a good alternative to the 50 and with the APSC crop you can turn that into a 35mm.
Great informative video. I have a g9 and since the last firmware update I'm extremely happy with autofocus and do think it's very reliable for what I do. Wanted to mention after watching your olympus em1ii video I picked one up for a steal at 200 Canadian dollars. Just wondering if you kept yours? Autofocus is very reliable on the olympus but it lacks some of the features found in the g9. Anyways for the price I paid for the em1ii body it's a keeper and well worth every penny.. There's also a new firmware for the g9 that lets you do linear manual focus with some of their lenses. Keep up the good work always enjoy your content.
The AF on the Olympus was great and the picture quality was good, but it wasn't as good as the other cameras so I did sell it. I actually regret that decision now because that stabilization is so good and it's a great run and gun camera.
I was undecidable between Canon EOS R6 II vs Sony A7 IV and now Panasonic drop the bomb S5 II After watching your video I think I will pick S5 Mark II because color science is very close to Canon Color 🥰 Thanks for sharing you did awesome job
reckon out of them all the 85mm seems to struggle maintaining focus. The 35mm and 50mm looked the best to my eye. Although the 35mm still looked a smidge too wide for my liking. The 50mm was just right. I can see how if you could only afford one you might go for the 35mm though especially if you're indoors a lot and space was at a premium.
Why the price of the 24mm is expensive ? i have a 85mm with the s5 its fantastic in Paris with the sky is grey ! the bokeh and colors is wonderfull ! very light ! I prefer s5 on my old a7III colors and others function ...
That's a good question. I wondered the same thing about the pricing structure. It would have been nice if they were all the same price for customers. Perhaps there's either more demand for a 24mm or there's more glass internally. I am not so sure.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Really keen on Panasonic S5 because of the price (A$2149 for body only, wowe) but we used G85 in the past and the autofocus is woeful. Seeing it from your videos, S5 looks much better!
@@PeterFoeng The S5 is a huge upgrade over the G85. I had two of the G85 cameras and they were very good, but I ended up trading them both in for an S5. The S5 has also made my original GH5 cameras redundant now. I much prefer the image out of the S5.
nice overview, thank you! not beeing able to afford all at once and owning the 20-60 kit and the sigma 45 i would go with the 85 first and - well - 35? 24? remember those uncompleted sticker albums? dang!
It call comes down to which focal range works best for you. The 35mm is a great choice as it's wide enough and also goes to 50mm with the APSC crop. I feature the crop mode comparison in this video as well if it helps.
great video and thanks. I'm soon to buy my first digital SLR after my film SLR's finally packed up on me and I'm thinking seriously about the Panny S5 after using Canon Film SLR's for decades. However....dammit, I hate to say it but...that autofocus! I'm vision impaired somewhat (Op pending) and will need an autofocus I Can TRUST! Even in your video, there were glitches, sadly. Why oh Why won't Panasonic build a system to rival Sony or Canon, both of whom, are years ahead.
Autofocus sucks! To show shots like this is misleading! Why you did not show talking head when you speak about it? Because it sucks …. I am using native L mount Panasonic lenses and it is not usable for work!
Misleading? I show samples of every single lens. The entire video was shot with Autofocus. Experiment around with the speed and one area modes and it works very well. The AF on this camera is very usable. I used it for all the talking head shots with the kit lens as well. All the best. Edit - if you have older lenses on a different camera, you probably will get very different results.
I never understood the Canon thing for video. Once their cameras caught fire under normal use conditions I tuned out. You're going to love the S5IIX, it's a beast.
This video took a long time to put together so I hope it's a helpful overview if you are wondering which prime lens is best suited for your needs. If you have any questions please let me know.

@@GeekyNerdyTechy thanks will check out. Do the primes focus better then the 24-105? (standard 30 fps) cheers
I’m new to using different lenses and just brought the 50mm prime lens but didn’t realise it’s for the s series as I has a lumix g7 is there a certain adapter I could get or nah?
I don't think so. You'll need to return it for the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 or Panasonic 25mm f/1.4. Those will give you the same field of view.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy yeah I had to do some more research and there isn’t so I’ve returned it. Thank you for the recommendations and most definitely will go with one of those.
i d go with the 24 one
Great video!
I got my S5 today and looking for some native lenses to buy! These might be the best bang for the buck 🥳
@@andersistbesser I see. Thanks for the info.
So you are a Geeky Nerdy Techy when you are not in the blues… Love both your channels! Keep it up😀👌
Which one pick up for video and photo?.I have Lumix S1
Depends on your needs. Try the kit lens and see which focal length you like. The 35mm is my favorite but that doesn't mean anything if it doesn't suit your needs.
Does the s series 1.8 balance just as well as the 20-60 kit? That’s the ronin sc with extended lens support, correct?
If you use the Kit at 20mm you shouldn't have to correct the balance much. That won't be the case if you use it zoomed in. All of the primes are physically the same size and basically the same weight making it easy just to swap them out on my Ronin S without rebalancing.
this is extremely helpful! what a nice video :)
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Ok, thanks! Good to know! I will try that out.
I wish I had all of these lenses. Currently only have the 85mm from this set.
How would work with sigma FP,.. I hope we can see that some day
I don't own that camera but being that it's also L Mount, it will work fine. AF performance will depend heavily on the Sigma FP.
How do you compare with new Sigma 35 and 85 1.4 for video manual focusing? Would be great if you could do comparison showing image quality and other:)
Thanks Lukasz. I haven't tried the Sigma before but I will see what I can do. :)
@@GeekyNerdyTechy great. It would be good comparison. At this moment Lumix and Sigma are two brands that I am think off on L-Mount :)
What mode is this shot in, V log?
The entire video was shot in natural profile
@@GeekyNerdyTechy thanks for the reply, and the very helpful video!
Panasonic finally got usable AF! cheers!
The S5 is the best so far. It's not 100% perfect but it's far better than ever finally.
great video!
Hey Shane. Your Saramonic link is broken.
Thanks, Dean I will fix it up mate.
Does the Panasonic S5 have two SD card slots?
Yes. It's like the GH5 but with a bigger sensor and better image quality.
awesome! that's the video I needed all these lenses showed FF and apsc. Cool one
I was undecidable between Canon EOS R6 II vs Sony A7 IV and now Panasonic drop the bomb S5 II
After watching your video I think I will pick S5 Mark II because color science is very close to Canon Color 🥰
Thanks for sharing you did awesome job
Thanks for the kind words! You'll love the camera, it's a powerhouse.
Panasonic S5 Will Photos and videos feature both?
It's a very good photo and video camera. I use the S5 mostly for video for my use case.
reckon out of them all the 85mm seems to struggle maintaining focus. The 35mm and 50mm looked the best to my eye. Although the 35mm still looked a smidge too wide for my liking. The 50mm was just right. I can see how if you could only afford one you might go for the 35mm though especially if you're indoors a lot and space was at a premium.
As usual excellent comparision
Thanks again!
@@GeekyNerdyTechyDear sir I brought 25mm f1.7 lens for my lumix G7 cam . Will you suggest me best settings for sharper images with best bokeh ?
Why the price of the 24mm is expensive ? i have a 85mm with the s5 its fantastic in Paris with the sky is grey ! the bokeh and colors is wonderfull ! very light ! I prefer s5 on my old a7III colors and others function ...
That's a good question. I wondered the same thing about the pricing structure. It would have been nice if they were all the same price for customers. Perhaps there's either more demand for a 24mm or there's more glass internally. I am not so sure.
What lense did you use on your entire video?
I used the Panasonic 20-60 kit lens
First😏 don’t forget to sandbag that tripod Shane
Good point! I need to get that sorted asap! :)
great review!
Thank you! Cheers!
How do you contact Panasonic Australia? Keen to try the S5 :D
I contacted them from their website and heard back. Odds are you need a certain amount of subs for them to send stuff out for review.
I much prefer the image out of the S5.
amazung test!
thank you
Awesome review. 👍
Thanks, Coby!
nice overview, thank you!
not beeing able to afford all at once and owning the 20-60 kit and the sigma 45 i would go with the 85 first and - well - 35? 24?
remember those uncompleted sticker albums? dang!
It call comes down to which focal range works best for you. The 35mm is a great choice as it's wide enough and also goes to 50mm with the APSC crop. I feature the crop mode comparison in this video as well if it helps.
i believe there is a 18mm coming, right? use the crop regularly. honestly i was fine with the pixel to pixel crop too...
I thought the second native ISO of the S5 starts at 640...
High gain native ISO is 4000, low gain is 640.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Oh right, in VLog. In a non-flat/cine profile high-gain is 640. That's what had me confused lol
Nice video thanks for the video
Thank you :)
I get the value of this video to narrative and commercial videographers but I shoot Multicam events and I have to use zooms.
Your zoom choice makes the selection process a lot easier. The 24-105 or the 24-70 are the best bets.
great video and thanks.
Excellent!! Thanks
i have 20-60 ,24-105, 35, 85 s series. the 24-105 not so good..use 2 years. the 20-60 bad mechanic zoom..
My favourite lens is 85
I am most interested in 85mm.
And they look remarkably like the Sigma lenses . . . . Which isn’t a bad thing!
Bokeh looks kinda busy against the greenery on these lenses.
For talking heads you dont need autofocus at all. Maybe its your skills that suck..
@@andersistbesser or maybe when you taking video and the person is not Stephen Hawking
@@ondrejjanoska660 such a dumb comment.
Another great video. I am switching to full frame and the x version is what I will get. Goodbye Canon.
I never understood the Canon thing for video. Once their cameras caught fire under normal use conditions I tuned out. You're going to love the S5IIX, it's a beast.
Ty for your great video. It has inspired me to go for it. I have been really cautious, but this feels right. Cheers.
