    "Go for the camera that looks good to you." I couldn't agree more! This was exactly why I got my Lumix S1. I fell in love with the design when I first saw it in 2019, bought it in 2021 and I still fall in love with it every time I open my camera bag!

      Same for me as well. I bought S1 in 2021 and I just love the camera. Quality of the output, the feeling that we get while holding the camera, the build quality and ease of use, everything is very special about this camera.

    I love the S5. The custom dial makes it so easy to switch settings for different scenarios. Panasonic is definitely one of the most practical cameras to use regarding workflow. As a mainly stills shooter, I would love to see an S5R for higher res or smaller S1R.

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  2 роки тому +5

      I have never used custom dial - never needed to (yet).
      I don't think they would do S5R but hopefully S6 will have higher resolution sensor and better AF

      Well maybe S5ii with higher megapixels and 8k video. Set up the custom dials but never used them. For v-log shooting etc. Still a fantastic stills shooter and very good vlogging camera. Couldn't be more pleased. Was originally going to go for a fujifilm x-t4. Also a very cool camera. But don't regret going with the s5.

    There's a workaround for changing AF and MF on the fly. With the lens switch set to manual, you can still apply autofocus with the rear "AF ON" button. You toggle between MF and AF via the focus ring and back button.

    • @Photovintageguy

      I use vintage lenses, I use punch in to focus. I have punch in set to joystick push in. I move the box to where I need it, i have the box small like 10x like two down from max. Then i press down on the joystick. I can still move it right left up down if needed, just don't press hard. Top dial can still maje box smaller or bigger. I use full screen push in zoom to focus. I also put the punch box on the rule of thirds line, if that makes sense for composition. That way you know you're actually in best focus even if lens has different focus away from the center. I also move forward and back a bit rather than reaching for the focus ring every time.

    • @SatisfactorX

      where can i find the rear autofucs 'on' please

    • @borderlands6606
      @borderlands6606 Рік тому

      @@SatisfactorX With the lens switch set to MF (not AF!) you can still autofocus with the top right button on the back of the camera, marked AF ON. When you move the focus ring on the lens, the camera reverts to manual focus until you press the AF ON button again, when it autofocuses. This is the case whether you have the camera back dial set to S (single) C (continuous) or MF (manual focus).

    I bought the S5 with the 20-60mm and 50mm F1.8 last black friday for only $1450 (after cashback) as my first serious camera. I love everything about it except for the lack of affordable lenses... I guess this will change once Sigma starts making more lenses within the L-mount alliance. Hoping for a 70-200 2.8 from Sigma later this year!

    I really love this review. You can tell that Pav is a frequent user rather than a youtuber who tried a camera for a week or so. Lumix cameras are greatly underappreciated. Many keep babbling on about the AF, but for 95% it works fine and for most stills it’s actually great! I personally prefer the S1 and S1R (for their EVF and tilting LCD), but the S5 is a great camera too. Files are easy to process, colours are great and handling and build quality is better than the obvious competition. The L-mount allows me to easily use Leica M and L-mount glass as well, next to the great choice Panasonic and Sigma already offer. The only issue I had for a complete switch was the lack of native Profoto TTL and Capture One tether support. I believe by now, there’s a Profoto trigger esp. for Panasonic G and S, but C1 tethering is still out there…?

    Your video came up on my suggestions again today and happily rewatching it, I noticed your comment about pics from the Sony (I have the A7IV) being darker than what you see on the screen, compared to the S5. At least when we're talking about the LCD screens and what we're expecting straight out of camera. This is so true and it took me at least a few weeks to come to terms with this on the Sony.

    I don't have an s5, but I do have an s1 and gh5. I love working with panasonic cameras. I switched to panasonic 4 years ago and I have never looked back. The only complaint I have with them is the difficulty of connecting my phone through the apps on iOS. I am a fan if the color science, the image that comes from the sensors is wonderful. The L mount combined with sigma glass is phenomenal. I have used Canon, Pentax, Olympus and Panasonic. These cameras give me any option I can think of as a creator and it never limits my capabilities. Keep pushing for Panasonic because they deserve it!

    That camera really feels like a hidden gem, once you tap deep into it. Most comments about the focus out there have some truth in it, but still are unbalanced, as they make it sounds like every other solution has no flaws. The reality is with a camera like the s5, you really need to understand how it does behave and the scenarios you're shooting, and choose the lenses and the settings accordingly. On other solutions, if you're a beginner you'll feel more comfortable. The s5 is literally a robbery for the price.

With the IBIS I can take razor sharp portraits in dim lit bars, completely noise free, handheld. 10 years ago with my Nikon D90 and kit lens, it would need to be on a tripod with a shutter speed of several seconds to do this, a lot has happened since then...

    In my experience with my S5 and Lumix S f1.8 lenses, the linear focus ring mode is truly amazing, although I have to point out that 90º and 120º are very skippy (not really usable for focus racking unfortunately... hope Panasonic will be able to fix this eventually). What I mean is that you can clearly see the focus breathing in a very skippy way, not smooth at all. Although, 180º and up to maximum work very smoothly, just like a true mecanical focus ring. Still an amazing feature for hybrid shooters!
    EDIT : Strangely, I just tried again and now it seems to work smoothly... so I don't know what's the deal here. Maybe this issue is only occuring when battery level is low?

    Pretty much agree 100% Pav...except for me, an even better choice would be if my S1R, S1H and S5 had a child together...
    The stills capability of the 47mp S1R (but not the position of it's on/off switch nor it's orange lit top screen).
    The ergonomics of the S1H and it's square top screen plus position of the on/off switch.
    The tilt screen and resolution of the LCD of the S1H (that of the S5 presents an image a bit more 'muddy' than it's actually capturing).
    The EVF from the S1H and S1R.
    The dampened shutter of the S1H and S1R.
    The size and weight of the S5.
    Yes, slightly better tracking AF would be appreciated, but for anything else, isn't as bad as some make out and as you say, for stills, a total non-issue.
    For pure stills, IMO the S1R is the daddy.
    For pure video chops, the S1H.
    As a hybrid, the S1R has the weakest video spec, but there's an argument to be made for both the S1H and S5 based on the individual users needs...

      It won't come out or bend if you don't push it. I have been filming a lot hand held, when the camera is in the cage, without the cable clap and with the left hand side handle. With that set-up my hand is actually constantly touching the cable and I never had an issue

      We shoot weddings mainly and so similarly we can’t afford to have a cable come unplugged, and that being said shooting handheld etc it’s super easy to bend the connector, and I went through like 3 Atomos branded cables in a month. Buut Smallrig has a cable clamp to protect the connection if you have a cage that completely holds it in there!

      @@greyhousevisual and if I connect a Full HDMI adapter to the mini????? Would it help with anything?

    • @greyhousevisual
      @greyhousevisual 2 роки тому +1

      @@lapinchetele I think it would make it worse to plug in to the full adapter, because it adds a bit of leverage to the side of it as well as more of it sticking out, the other option we’ve had a lot of luck with is using a 90 degree angled micro hdmi cable as it cuts down on the amount sticking off of the side of the camera!

    Will the S5 be ok to shoot workout videos?
    Will the AF be good enough for 1 man doing workout movements while the camera is on a tripod?

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  2 роки тому +1

      theoretically speaking, yes ... in reality, if the light is too low, or with certain lenses, the camera might struggle with too much or fast motion . Switch the camera to manual focusing, dial the spot in which you'll be in and go for it - zero problems

    What Memory Card would you recommend for this camera ? for someone who does a lot of slowmo thanks in advance!!!

      I personally use Lexar cards but I also record everything externally to Ninja V so the card is a little bit irrelevant

    What lens would you recommend for the S5 ? Apparently, if the lens attached is not OIS - then the IBIS is not enough to give smooth handheld video...and those OIS lenses are very expensive...

      this is not true!
      I get decent stabilisation using vintage lenses on S5 (or the new 7Artisans cine set - check out my latest video)

      Nikon Z6 II will have better autofocus in video. But I think the S5 will be better for videography in many ways. Better IBIS, Waveforms, built-in LOG profile, Luminence spot meter.
