Something in particular that makes life a little more difficult for him everyday is that the night Joel and Sarah were shot his watch broke as they were rolling down that hill; so basically every time Joel looks at his watch it reminds him roughly of the exact time his daughter died.
It’s not when he rolls down the hill. It was hit by one of the bullets. But yea your point stands of it shows the exact time Sarah got shot. Horrible reminder.
Plus it happened on his birthday, talk about bad luck
his life stopped at that moment, he was a walking dead from there.
@@masterdonut5 Technically not his birthday anymore... but still it will be a reminder forever for sure
@@SPG-lv7wk So you're saying that Joel got shot in the wrist?
I'm loving the reactions from non-gamers to this. The sentiment has been unanimous. It's so awesome that EVERYONE ELSE is finally getting to know this incredible story.
I'm loving that the game lovers aren't (for the most part) disappointed 😅 I've only watched play-throughs of the game so I know most the big events but i'm not as deeply engaged as most players of the game
@@kuivia I had heaps of doubt going into this, but I have to say, they're knocking it out of the park! I'm so eager to see how they adapted the rest of it because this first episode (while it did have changes) was done so well and kept the spirit of the game very much alive while expounding on some of the key points. Here's to hoping the rest of it holds up this well!
@@erinhaury5773 Been re-watching pewdiepies old play through and i'm even more impressed with what they did with the 1st episode now. Like a lot of the things in the game at the start in the city would've been super weird on screen otherwise 😅😅
Not played the game either, but was impressed with episode 1, reminded me of the film 'i am legend' to be honest.
Same!!!. The story is just too good that non gamers have to experience it.
What the epidemiologist is talking about at the beginning is btw an actual thing. There are some cordyceps (fungi) that do to insects exactly what the guy is talking about.😅
Recently there are discoveries that its starting to infect amphibians. Hoping it doesnt hop to mammals
@@casta lol no. It isn’t. The fungus affecting frogs is completely different and it’s killing off species, not spreading.
@@casta There is a parasite, called toxoplasma, it reproduces in the stomach of felines. It is known to affect wolves the most at the moment, making them wander off from the pack, get more risky when hunting prey.
@@casta wym
@@casta yeah wym, hope not lmao
Sarah's death makes all of us sob everytime, even if we know that it is coming. We breathe a breath of relief after tommy saves joel and then...
played the game twice and it still got me... it me 5 minutes before just knowing it was coming.
when I first played the game I had to pause put the controller down and take a break before playing further. it's such smart writing
Suggestion: spoilers tag before posting
@@Sage2000 you are literally watching this reaction. You clicked it knowing there’d be spoilers.
Nico Parker absolutely nailed her part. I have seen reactions from gamers who knew what was supposed to happen and still cried their eyes out.
I have to agree, Nico Parker absolutely nailed her part as Sarah. Fantastic casting choice!
The fact that you're new to this story is likely going to be in your advantage. Fresh eyes to this world with Joel and Ellie.
I hope you gain more subscribers and supporters while you join this adventure.
Cannot wait for next week!
Take care, Addie!
I played the game but apparently at the third episode the serie is going in another direction in the storytelling than the game. It should be another point of view based on the notes that you can find in the game. An another character maybe? Of course it doesn't change the main story itself but it should be something new even for the gamers out there.
@@lemuriansrock POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT
I believe the 3rd episode is gonna be about Bill and Frank. Excited to see that Nick Offerman will have more of a presence in the show than Bill had in the game!
I love the little detail about Jakarta having trouble on the news during breakfast. Jakarta is one of the world's leading mill locations for flour which is probably how the spread started. That being said Joel, Tommy, and Sarah all could have been infected numerous times before everything kicked off. Didn't have pancake mix so no pancakes. Didn't eat the biscuits offered by the Adlers. Sarah didn't eat the cookies after finding out they were raisin. And Joel forgot the birthday cake, all of which contain flour and surely would have resulted in them becoming infected.
This is very faithful to the game. Almost shot for shot in many cases, yet with certain changes that keep those of us familiar with the game on our toes.
Keep watching. The video game is one of the more gripping and emotional games made and from what they've teased, it's going to be much like the game.
The Mandalorian and TLOU. This is Pascal's year.
My thoughts exactly.
The first game is absolutely incredible, one of my all time favorites! I'm definitely pleased with the first episode, Pedro Pascal, in my opinion, killed it as Joel!
Man's super busy, he's in this and in March, he'll be in The Mandalorian, hyped and and proud of him!
I'm pretty sure this spread through the wheat/bread/flower. The whole thing of them not having pancakes that morning for the dads bday then the daughter not having the cookies since she doesn't like rasin cookies. Plus the dad mentioned about atkins and not wanting muffins
Good catch
Addies solution to anything is: get out of there, or just run . Such a fighter 😂❤️
10:40 "I know.... I know.... I know..." OMG, the acting is fenomenal.
FYI, Cordyceps, the fungus they are talking about, IS a real thing, but it only affect some insects like ants and turn them into litteral zombies. This zombie show is probably the most realistic one from a scientifical point of view !
Lol no. It isn’t even close to being realistic. The fungus is real but 1. It can’t infect anything other than insects because mammals and reptiles get too warm for it to survive(yes reptiles are cold blooded but heat up when they bask). And 2. It’s not 1968 anymore. Modern medicine has plenty of working treatments for fungal infections. The “mutated rabies” zombies, like from “28 days later” are actually the most realistic. And “realistic” is used LOOOOOOOOSELY.
@@zimvader25 I never said this is realist, obviously it isn't since we aren't all zombies currently. I just said that this is the most scientifically accurate, given the fact that, yes, with a lot (a very big lot) of the proper mutation this type of fungus could contaminate humans. This is very unlikely, but scientifically possible
@@loicrose9916 yeah, I watched a mycologist saying the most unrealistic part was actually the infection speed. The fungus multiplying quickly enough to take over a human in 24 hours literally defies physics - but if it was a realistic growth speed, we'd be able to contain it and wouldn't get a cool zombie story
@@JBWinter yes exactly. There is now way the fungus spread that fast. To spread, the fungus would need to metabolize enough glucose fast enough to start releasing spores, or whatever reproductive mode it uses
Addie you were onto something with the cookies...The radio broadcast something about Jakarta which happens to have the largest mill in the world it spread through flour...so Joel and Sara avoided the infection but not having the pancakes, biscuits or the cake
Pain, lots and lots of pain, that’s what your getting yourself into.
The scene when Sarah dies, whether from the game or show, still feels like getting the wind knocked out of you.
Watch ALL of it, I promise you won't regret it! This is my favorite game of all time (along with Part 2) and it is an amazing journey. This really centers around people and how their relationships affect things, so it's very character driven. I'm glad you're giving this a chance. ❤
Mushrooms are pretty fascinating. There is a type that does turn insects into "zombies" like the man was talking about in the opening. We share about half of our DNA with fungi. It has more in common with animals than plants. Which means we share a common ancestor. The largest living organism on the planet is a fungal chain in Oregon. It's over 3 miles wide. There's so much more interesting facts about them and with potential barely tapped. Some strains can even help fight cancer cells. The cure for cancer could be growing around us. Some strains can even eat plastic.
They were very faithful to the game. It makes me happy, too, because I'm not a gamer, but I love The Last of Us. Having a daughter myself makes Sarah's death in the game hard to watch, and I'm not ashamed to admit it made me tear up, but seeing it played out in live action... man that got me right in the feels.
lol she was right on it when she said don’t eat the cookie. The infection started with infected flower from South America. Anything made with flower was probably infected, the cake, the cookies, the biscuits, the pancakes. Lucky guess
If you notice they inadvertently avoided all flour products all day. No pancakes, no biscuits, no raisin cookies and no cake. That might have something to do with them avoiding infection. They did show the man feeding his mother biscuits and she was the first to turn
Me encantó el detalle de que para el doblaje de la serie en español de latinoamérica usaron las mismas voces que en el videojuego.
eso quedo de huevos!!!!
That’s perfect!
Great Outro! One of your best. Suggest you consider such closing reactions more often.
In case no one else hasn't mentioned it, the scenario the epidemiologist was describing at the very start (the 1968 talk show part) about the cordycep taking over an ant's body is a real thing that occurs in nature.
I'm a huge fan of yours , from now on, I'm going to continue to watch your streams 🔥
This is my fourth reaction video to this show lol. Nice reaction Addie. I'm impressed with everyone's acting and portrayal of each character.
Watched this just before watching your reaction! As someone who's played the first game, I must say this is in my opinion, the best video game adaptation I've seen. Also, it's definitely interesting to see your reactions to this as someone who's not familiar with the world of TLoU.
As a personal sidenote, it's great to see Anna Torv again! Been a while since Fringe.
And lastly, subscribed! :)
If you listen closely at 21:14 when they get caught, that's the same sound they used for being caught in the game.
Really excited that you decided to add this to your schedule. The game is fantastic. Definitely one of the best stories out there. So far the show has done about as well as possible in terms of sticking to the actual game. There's added stuff for depth and a few minor changes, but the minor stuff is only nitpicking. I'm thrilled with how this first episode went. And it's pretty much impossible not to cry when his daughter dies. That part is always heartbreaking even if you know it's coming. Ahhh I'm so excited for future reactions now.
Craig Mazin is the genius behind CHERNOBYL and 2008s SUPERHERO MOVIE
Too bad BORDERLANDS won't have the same level of quality because of AVI ARAD
haha Avi Arad did his best to ruin Spiderman.
Caps definitely makes your speech look more meaningful...(no).
@@Jumpman67 and Morbius
I haven’t played the games either but I am loving the show so far 💜💜
I absolutely do not have the guts to watch this myself, so I appreciate you bringing the highlights
Another nice reaction, Addie. I've heard a lot about The Last of Us TV show via Instagram and watched this episode with your full-length reaction to it on Patreon. Even I know nothing about the game either, but I'm definitely looking forward to watching the next eight episodes along with your full-length reactions to them as well. I can't wait to see what's next for Joel. Kudos to your partner, Jeremy, for suggesting this show to you. BTW, nice shacket.
You’re in for a ride! I wish i could go back and play the game for the first time again. Or be able to watch this series without having played the game.
Did anyone else notice how they introduced the cordyceps fungus through the yeast fungus or flour in baked goods? The visibly undercooked biscuits being fed to the old woman who turns first, the cookies Sarah is given (and never eats), that Sarah and Joel eat eggs when they were meant to be eating pancakes, the cake that Joel forgets to pick up, and that Joel is on the Atkins diet, meaning that he's not eating carbs, like bread made with yeast fungus or flour.
The Atkins thing was just a joke on Joel's part, everything else is spot on!
I understand that Jakarta is home to a major flour mill but wouldn't most flour in America be produced in America? Not like cordyceps actually thrives in any climate in the USA. In the game it was hinted through a newspaper article that it was crops from Central and South America which would point to things like coffee, cocoa, bananas.
In the game, the original news articles mentioned that the fungus originated in Central and South America. The idea was that the cordyceps had infected coffee beans and cocoa beans. Can you imagine how fast the infection would spread around the world in coffee and chocolate?
After an additional viewing of 1x1 the kid shuffling towards the city was a means of reminding you of the beginning words about how the cordyceps goal of control and spreading is evolving, trying to spread by using a child to bait others into getting close so it knows what it is doing. Another thing I noticed is the lurking enemy on the left building at the end after they cross the fence into the city.
That is NOT how the infection works lol
That kid wasn't under control of the cordyceps yet, it was bitten in the leg and infected within the last 12-24 hours. That kid was shuffling because it was injured, exhausted, and traumatized, not because it was under control of cordyceps.
One thing that i always found disturbing is the airport, so all the planes if you noticed were leaving at the same time, the pilots werent panicing, most likely the tower was overrun and no one was directing anymore for takeoff clearences and at that point its up to the pilots to say “were taking off” and having to work together to not wreck on the runway and block everyone else.. so much goes into that one scenario, then imagine the rest of the city or world lol
Amazing Episode, Amazing Reaction - Joel & Sarah's scene is so heartbreaking - both in-game and now in live action - overall, a phenomenal episode!
ENDURE & SURVIVE!!!!! Keep up the great work and stay safe.
I was so excited when I finally saw this was getting a live action adaptation! The story of The Last of Us is an emotional rollercoaster and it's great seeing others experience it for the first time.
You were spot on with not eating the cookies.
This premiere is perfect. Im so excited
Hey, Addie! The premiere is scrupulously faithful to the game in every way including story, dialogue, production design, wardrobe, props and characters. A few embellishments like the 1968 prologue, the elderly neighbors, the wandering boy and the FEDRA guard customer actually add context and enhance the drama. Neil Druckmann, who created the game, is producing the show and HBO is obviously letting him influence the production. Craig Mazin, the showrunner, previously produced "Chernobyl".
That wasn't a clump of hair in the old lady's mouth but fungal tendrils. As John Hannah's scientist explained, the fungi seeks to propagate so these zombies don't feed on you but instead seek to transmit the spore aggressively. As the cordyceps fungi blooms it erupts out of the central nervous system of the host in several horrific stages ultimately rendering the body into a moldy tableau plastered to the wall. The spores were airborne in the game requiring the use of gas masks in areas of high concentration but the show will be dispensing with that since an airborne contaminant would have afflicted everyone in 20 years except those in hermetically sealed rooms. That's the reason for the vector being fungal tendrils extending from the mouths of the infected in the show.
The increased temperature serving as a catalyst was a new explanation provided in the show to reference the issue of climate change.
The actress playing Marlene, Merle Dandridge, actually portrayed the same character in the game!
The '60's scientist was played by John Hannah known for "Four Weddings and a Funeral", the Brendan Fraser "Mummy" franchise, "Spartacus" and "Agents of SHIELD".
Anna Torv, who plays Tess, is best known for "Fringe".
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are both "Game of Thrones" alums known for Prince Oberyn and Lyanna Mormont, respectively.
Pascal is, of course, Din Djarin as well from "The Mandalorian".
Uncle Tommy is played by Gabriel Luna who portrayed the Robbie Reyes iteration of Ghost Rider in "Agents of SHIELD".
Nico Parker, who stole the show as Sarah, is Thandie Newton's daughter!
The video game is one of the most extraordinary journeys you can take that will haunt you forever.
The sequel is highly controversial but even darker and deeper than the original!
This is very accurate to the game version of the last of us. This episode being almost scene for scene, line for line at times with the game's intro, with only a few changes or added scenes here and there.
One of the best new shows. I loved the games even though they break your heart so thoroughly and the show really takes up the mantle. It is fine drama/horror/action.
Good choice.
The episode was perfect and your reaction was awesome Addie. I cant wait to watch you react to all the episodes which will be exciting, especially when you haven't played the game ☺!
Addie, watch Tom Holland (Spider-Man) in Uncharted with Mid credit scene. It's also based on video game.
Avi Arad ruined everything
Hear, hear. My girlfriend & I enjoyed seeing that movie in IMAX 1.90:1, last year. She's a huge fan of and has a crush on Tom Holland.
The beginning of the game is that period right before the fall. You play as the daughter and get even more attached if you are going in fresh. So when she dies and the time skip, it hurts.
oh wow, i wasnt expecting this! as a huge fan of the games, this show is SO GOOD.
Having ambition is all it takes to make a videogame adaptation work
That's why most videogame adaptations in the past failed, because the studio hired people that didn't understand videogames or filmmaking
That's why recent adaptations like "Detetive Pikachu", "Sonic The Hedgehog" and "Arcane" worked, because the people behind it understood the games and the media
And the new upcoming animated Super Mario movie, perhaps, since Miyamoto is involved?
Wow very good observation about the cookies!
Hope you enjoy this series, the game is one of my favourites of all time
You saying you're nervous is like calling water wet😂
Yessss The Last Of US!! I'm late but I'm about to binge this now!
Ive only played a few minutes of the first game... and this show managed to expand on and be more than The Walking Dead, Sweet Tooth, The Girl With All The Gifts, etc. and makes all those things its own. Im so hooked.
Had a feeling you would react to this show. Glad you did, it's an amazing game!
Great reaction Addie! Always fun seeing reactions to this from people who don't know the game.
I have been almost exclusively watching the reactions from people unfamiliar with the story. It’s so cool to see people experience it for the first time like I did with the game when it first came out.
Didn't expect to see you here, but I guess I should've lol
I was hoping to get some reactions to this by reactors I know who haven't played the game, couldn't have asked for a better one. I'm excited!
What I find really interesting about the premise is that an older use of the term _zombie_ referred to a person who was enslaved by some sort of magical mind control (usually depicted as voodoo magic). So technically the infected could still be considered zombies, they're just controlled by the fungus instead of a person.
In the game, Sarah's scene happens about 15 min in i think?? And immediately after the intro song starts. I remember the emotions felt vividly durong that way back in 2013 playing it at midnight 🥲
Great start-off! I'ts also great to see a reaction from someone who doesn't know the game also.
You aske about vaccines, but as the scientist i then beginning says there is no defence; vaccines are ony useful for virusses and for bacteria we use fungi as a defence.
I loved the acting and cinematography in this first episode; I think we're going to be in for an awesome ride.
Till the next one and warm regards from the Netherlands!
It made me happy that someone that didn't play the game liked the story. I knew what to spect, but to see someone that didn't know anything about the game and reacted like you did brought me joy.
4:55 😅 it’s the cookies for sure.
By the way, the fungus talk at the beginning? All real. Some fungus do infect insects and make them behave like zombies.
I was hoping that one of my regular reactors would check TLOU out. Good reaction Addie! As someone who's played the game, I'm glad that you liked it and want to continue watching it!
the hole episode addie's nervous laughing is priceless
They kind of give u hints on how it started. Alot of people were infected by flour or foods. They didn't have pancake mix, then he didn't eat the biscuits, she didn't eat the cookies and he didn't get a cake and the old lady was the one eating biscuits and she is the one that turned first
In the game, the prologue was set in the present day of when the game was released before jumping 20 years in the future. The TV version of *The Last of Us* is in reverse. With it stating in 2003 and before transitioning into present day of 2023.
PS: I like how Sarah has a poster of *Destiny Child* and their single *Survivor* above her bed. Well play to set up the theme of this series.
Another great video game adaptation, hope you enjoy the story, it definitely has plenty of special moments.
What a great episode🔥
Pedro Pascal is amazing 👏🏼
now counting 6 reactions (including this one) that I have seen on this episode I love each and everyone of them. almost as i love the episode. look forward to join on the journey that is the last of us.
Now you feel our pain playing the video game you should definitely check out the video game if you want more details welcome to the world of last of Us and the most iconic beginning scene in history that will break your damn heart the first time you watch it!
I glad you enjoyed it ☺️ I'm glad you didn't have any expectations but from a person that played the video game expectations exceeded the hype on certain things they did so much honor to the original game the first TV show or movie to do justice for a video game in a long time ! You definitely need to play the game after you watch the show you'll understand so much stuff that's in the show that's homage and honor to certain scenes that are in the game for cutscenes in storyline
There are so many lines in the show pulled straight out of the game! So good!
"Drugs, I sell hardcore drugs." ❤
Perfect reaction
The game is one one of the all time gaming classics. The story is what really drives it, and there is a lot that is going to happen. I wish I was like you and enjoy the series blind, which is definitely the best way to watch it. Still looking forward to the next episode, look like you are hooked.
Enjoy the ride, this show is definitely true to the game and that is a great thing.
Having played the game and knowing the story, and that this series is telling that very story, I can tell you that you are in for one of the greatest stories ever. The game won multiple awards, the story is powerful enough to make the player fully invested in the characters and their bond, right up the finale. Even though I’ve played it a few times, Sarah’s death is still painful… but I would say even more in this series though, as the game picked up from the night of the outbreak, the series actually fleshed her out more by giving us the full day.
Ellie is “infected”, but her immune system has fought back and stopped the fungus from taking over, so her DNA could be the key to finding a cure. Joel and Tess have to help get her to the doctor who is working on that cure. The perils they will face will definitely have you on edge. Please do keep watching.
10:40 I cried too, although I saw the scene in the game x times and knew what was going on.
My conclusion after this episode: I've never been so captivated by the start of a series based on a story I know inside and out.
ur in for one hell of a ride Addie... its scary it's emotional its hopeful and then it's hopeless its everything u could want for an apocalypse and to top it all off it's unapologetically real
if they stick reasonably close to the story from the game (which so far they have) then it's a winner
All my favorite reactors are doing this show and I love it. The first bit makes me cry every time.
Me - "Pfft Ive played the game i know whats coming"
Joel - "TOMMY HELP ME"
😭
When they dumped the kid they questioned into the fire heap
The first episode was very close to what happened at the start of the first game. Including some recreations of shots, dialogue and even costumes. There are some changes from the game but it's nothing really big. Most of them are small things for pacing. For example one of the characters is introduced with a tutorial mission which obviously doesn't need to be shown in a tv show so they were introduced differently in the episode. I am both excited and a little bit jealous of those of you are getting to experience this for the first time completely blind. It makes me happy that a wider audience is getting to experience this story who otherwise probably wouldn't have.
Thank ya partner for us Love the game and this show so far 🤞 and I’m chuffed to see you react to it ✌️🇬🇧
Calling all Reactors to eventually get "The Expanse" in their library of shows they're reacting to. Hope one day you're one of them!
Addie if you want to take your Zombie viewing to another level watch the movie World War Z, for me personally it was the most intense movie I have ever seen, I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning to the end.
Best game ever. Great recommendation from a partner Jeremy.
Please watch “United 93”. No movie has ever hit my emotions as hard as that movie did.
If he brought back a cake for Sarah, then she'd have been infected. The Fungus/Fungi infection was in flour... Therefore anything like mass produced bread, cake and even the offered baked cookies was infected. So having had eggs instead, saved their lives.
Cant wait for season 2!
Fun Fact : The whole Fungi Part at the start of the episode is actually factually correct...Which make the premisce of the whole game/show even more scarier! These parasitic fungus spores taking over the host body actually exist. Research ''zombie ant fungus'' on youtube and be ready to go down a scary rabbit hole. Not saying the whole ''Last of us'' scenario is lurking around the corner... But just the fact IT COULD happen, is scary AF.
This is absolutely fucking awesome!!!
My Favorite HBO Series
If you didn’t catch it the kid you saw immediately after the time jump was euthanized because he was infected. He’s the kid in the back of the truck.
There isn’t a cure.
I noticed you had little to say during your reaction! Clearly gripped by what was happening onscreen like the rest of us.
Can't wait to see what happens in this series!
I, also, never played the game, but I do know the game starts out exactly like the episode did, before the time jump.
To think, the game came out before Covid...
It’s a really good thing that they didn’t have pancake mix OR eat the biscuits the Adlers were offering And it was a great thing Joel forgot that birthday cake. Tainted Flour is supposedly what started everything. Please keep watching the series! It’s one of the greatest (If not the GREATEST) story’s ever told in a Video game. Just an FYI they’re not called Zombies. I won’t say what they are called cause you’ll learn as the show goes on but suffice to say they 100% are not Zombies. They aren’t eating people! They’re just transferring the disease/parasite to another host (It’s why both Adlers got up after being infected by the Grandma).
I think that one of the good things about this show is that it brings this story to people who didn't play the videogame, and perhaps have no interest to do so.
Yes! Another reactor I follow doing TLOU!
You know it's a good adaptation if a particular scene hits you both in game and show. Deym..
