Oh fun fact about this episode! The woman who plays Marlene (the leader of the Fire Flies) is her voice actress for Marlene in the video game of The Last of Us. She's the only person to reprise her actual role from the game. (however, there are other voice actors from the game that are in the show, but they don't play their actual roles from the game. But it's cool to have them in as kind of cameos I guess)
A few helpful notes! - it isn't a virus that's spreading, which is why they don't catch it by being near infected people; it's a fungus, so it needs a living host to infect another human (you saw the fungus coming out of the grandma's mouth in the opening sequence) - the infected people aren't zombies in the traditional sense that we're used to - they're not "undead" people, since the fungus is keeping the host (the Infected, as they're called in this series) alive in order to spread. Once the host dies, the fungus will eventually die, unable to spread further. More will get revealed about this in future episodes ;)

It was also filmed entirely in Alberta which is pretty cool, and season 2 is going to be filmed in Vancouver.

Great reaction! I just found your channel not too long ago through your Back to the Future reactions and loved them and now you're doing this show. Excellent choices so far! You might have caught it in the editing, but the child's body that Joel takes out of the truck near the beginning is the same child that you see wandering toward the quarantine zone. The injection the two guards gave to him wasn't medicine or a vaccine, it was used to kill the kid because he was infected. Also, you'll want to remember the song playing on the radio at the end of this episode. The lyrics will have a new meaning later. Can't wait to see the next episode!

fun fact: joel asking for the bag back, and shoe laces in high demand... both are nods to a mechanic in the video game. as you move along the story, you can raise joel's skill level in making weapons, traps and other useful supplies. in order to make them, however, you have to find it out in the wild - either in an abandoned building or on the road. so for gamers, watching joel ask for the bag back was a cool little nod to that building mechanic.

Aaaaand now there is actually a drug resistant fungus spreading in American hospitals and nursing homes - granted, it doesn't turn people into "infected" like the show - but it can kill. Crazy how topical it is. LOVED this show and became an even bigger fan of Pedro because of it. Bella Ramsay killed her role too (her American accent is so spot on, it's hard to believe she's English) - as well as SO MANY other actors on this show. the opening for the show is a very good adaptation of the opening of the game. It sets you up for a "do I want to keep going?" feeling of despair and foreboding that comes with the rest of the game and show. That opening, losing Sara, is gut wrenching, and just a little bit of what else is to come.

To answer your question about if it could infect them or not, in the game the fungi produced spores and people could get airborne cordyceps via inhalation. But in the show it seems like they do away with that concept and make it strictly a bloodborne pathogen.
Great script, great set design, great visuals and special effects. @@holddowna so this isn’t a spoiler but you’ll learn more about this infection as you watch but there’s different stages so I recommend you search about fungus infection in ants there’s some good videos here on you tube that will explain all this. The game dose not call them zombies they call them infected because zombies are non living in this universe the people the hosts are still living and the fungus controls the people. So theres 4 stages of the infection and this is what the stages are called in the game stage 1 is called a Runner. This is the begging parts of the infection the people infected are very hyper aggressive and move really fast that’s what you saw here in episode 1. Stage 2 is called a Stalker the infected person starts to act animal like they hide in the shadows and only pounce on their victims when it’s safe to do so. Stage 3 is called a Clicker the infected person loses there ability to see and uses clicking sounds like a bat to navigate there surroundings. Stage 4 has two parts the first part is called a Shambler that eventually turns into a Bloater but for this season there is no Shamblers just a Bloater. The infected person becomes very bloated and pussy like with hard scales all over there body. Enjoy the show it’s good.
Pedro Pascal spent time as a child in San Antonio while Gabriel Luna was born and raised in Austin so the accents didn't require any work on their parts. In fact, Luna actually spent a few hours as a teen in the actual Travis County jail on 10th that his character Tommy calls Joel from. It's funny how times change. When I was a kid we would eat pancakes for dinner, not to carbo-load but because it was all we could afford.
Fun fact: the actress playing Marlene in the show, Merle Dandrige, also played Marlene in the game. There's other videogame actors that will appear later on in the show.
Welcome to the last of us family and hope you get a chance to play the games and stream them on your channel. The games are well written. Also the stuff that comes out of their mouths are tendrils, fun fact the tendrils were supposed to be in the games but the creator changed it to being bitten to transmit the infection. Also the tendrils is how the infection is spread and the intro music is the same music from the games. Actually we do not what tess is to Joel he never said in the games.
Whats great about this show Harry Potter, Back to the Future and Lord of the Rings is in another series from 1991-1994 called "Odyssey". The main character a kid ends up in a coma. His mind creates another world thats in ruins. While the world trys to remeber what was the kid rediscovers who he is. Actors play dual roles of characters from both worlds. The series is amazing and has so much heart. The problem is if the kid wakes fromhis coma what happens to the other world.
Thanks!! I’m so excited! I was deep into Harry Potter and so I’m late to the show so I’m excited! Managed to stay spoiler free! I can’t wait to play the game after!
I like your channel very much and would like to recommend two movies. one is 'Nobody's Fool with Paul Newman and the other is an older fantasy film titled "The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao".
I'm the same. Not once have I ever played the games. All I knew is that it was a post apocalyptic zombie adventure. I had a feeling it was gonna be good and I was quite right. I loved it.
So in 1951 in France, fungus got in the bread supply in a small town. People got sick and started hallucinating. Some of them got violent. One kid tried to strangle his mother. Another guy jumped out of a window because he thought he was an airplane. And one guy tried to drown himself because he thought his stomach was filled with snakes. I believe there were several other incidents. Needless to say people went to prison for the corners they cut which lead to the mass poisoning.
This fungus takes over insects in the real world. Ants and grasshoppers and stuff. I doubt it could ever adapt to survive in a human. The immune and nervous system of a human is a bit more complex than an insect. But I'm no expert though.
It's within the realm of possibility but it'd take millions and millions of years to evolve that much. 150 years of global warming causing it isn't exactly realistic, but it's definitely more sound than most stories in this genre
Not sure how many times it may have been suggested before... but you definitely need to do LOTR if you haven't already. Truly a timeless masterpiece that still holds its own 20 years later. Truly probably the best trilogy ever made.
I really want to re watch, I saw them in theatres opening night 01-02-03 but haven’t seen them since, but I am trying to read the books first and I want to watch the extended versions!!!
Pedro and Gabriel Luna are both doing a great job with their West Texas accents because they both lived in Texas as kids. Pedro for a good part of his childhood, and Gabriel Luna actually grew up in Austin. That is his real accent.
It Is different from the game, but not by much. For example, large stretches of infected heavy combat are missing cause it's TV not a game. Obviously. The story is the same with some minor tonal differences. The actors bring their own interpretations on the characters, but neither is better. They are both the BEST versions of the story for the medium they are told in. They are BOTH Masterpieces. There's not much I can say without spoiling but I will say this. Watch everything carefully. Because they are experts in nuance, subtlety and visual story telling. Everything is considered and there's nothing haphazardly done. Every branch, set piece, phrase, glance, zoom, frame, etc etc.. is calculated. There are multiple specific references in the first episode that are tied to a 10 second conversation in episode 3. And there is a 2 second shot in Episode 2 that gives you KEY visual exposition about one of the characters. The obvious stuff like the flashlight PTSD flashback. Never happens again. From here on out, you have to pay attention.
Don't know... I'd argue some moments are better in the game, like the "you have no idea what loss is" scene, which always gives me goosebumps when playing the game. In the show, that moment isn't nearly as strong, imo.
Welcome to the emotional rollercoaster. The child in the chair was the child Joel had to put in the fire in the next scene.
What he said :) ^^^^^

Not only the voice actor, but also the body model. So she is completely the role in the game as well as in the series.

The kid Joel threw into the fire was the little boy that got the shot in the scene before. He had been infect and the shot euthanized him.

Stage 4 has two parts the first part is called a Shambler that eventually turns into a Bloater but for this season there is no Shamblers just a Bloater. The infected person becomes very bloated and pussy like with hard scales all over there body. Enjoy the show it’s good.
the game is fantastic they did a pretty good job with the show
Amazing reaction FR 🔥
Pedro Pascal spent time as a child in San Antonio while Gabriel Luna was born and raised in Austin so the accents didn't require any work on their parts. In fact, Luna actually spent a few hours as a teen in the actual Travis County jail on 10th that his character Tommy calls Joel from. It's funny how times change. When I was a kid we would eat pancakes for dinner, not to carbo-load but because it was all we could afford.
Waiting to see your reaction on eps 5😬
Fun fact: the actress playing Marlene in the show, Merle Dandrige, also played Marlene in the game.
There's other videogame actors that will appear later on in the show.
“I hope they’re not separated, father and daughter”. That comment bit you back hard!
😐
Enjoyed the video!! People who haven’t played the game are more fun to watch 😂 can’t wait for the next one 👍🏽
Thanks!! I’m so excited! I was deep into Harry Potter and so I’m late to the show so I’m excited! Managed to stay spoiler free! I can’t wait to play the game after!
btw, the army sticker was on tommy's truck. he's the vet.
Thanks!
I like your channel very much and would like to recommend two movies. one is 'Nobody's Fool with Paul Newman and the other is an older fantasy film titled "The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao".
Perfect premiere episode!

I'm the same. Not once have I ever played the games. All I knew is that it was a post apocalyptic zombie adventure. I had a feeling it was gonna be good and I was quite right. I loved it.
You need to. Game one is flawless.

Ooohh, you are in for a helluva ride.
“Pedro pascal looks sexy…” thank you for saying what I was thinking
👍🏽😁
So in 1951 in France, fungus got in the bread supply in a small town. People got sick and started hallucinating. Some of them got violent. One kid tried to strangle his mother. Another guy jumped out of a window because he thought he was an airplane. And one guy tried to drown himself because he thought his stomach was filled with snakes. I believe there were several other incidents. Needless to say people went to prison for the corners they cut which lead to the mass poisoning.
Crazy! I just watched the David attenborough BBC planet earth on cordyceps and the bullet ant to understand it more and I was like 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Living for this Pedro thirst
🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️
lot of people dont getr the green glow that woke sarah up. ive seen it irl, when certain kinds of electrical trnasformers blow up
and here we go
This fungus takes over insects in the real world. Ants and grasshoppers and stuff. I doubt it could ever adapt to survive in a human. The immune and nervous system of a human is a bit more complex than an insect. But I'm no expert though.
It's within the realm of possibility but it'd take millions and millions of years to evolve that much. 150 years of global warming causing it isn't exactly realistic, but it's definitely more sound than most stories in this genre
oh no! I mean... Yay! But... oh no... Great show, love it. Great girl, love you too. But I hate to see you cry... 😢
Gaming at it's best.
I still need to play!
Such a great show. You're gonna suffer, but you're gonna be happy about it... =p
The Griiiimmm!
The controlling "zombie" fungus is real in insects btw.
I just watched the BBC planet earth with the cordyceps and bullet ants 🤯
