My first "electric guitar", was a dime store acoustic, with a Wollensak microphone stuck inside it and plugged into a 1950s Wollensak monaural reel to reel tape recorder with a PA function, output to a Sears Silvertone 12 inch speaker housed in a Sears Hi-Fi cabinet. The Wollensak tape recorder used a 12AX7 preamp tube. It didn't sound too bad.
Funny, back then, early seventies, we had so many uses of a cheap cassette player. Owned a cheap acoustic guitar and with the cassette player turned it into an electric one or get fuzzy rock sound, like the Deep Purple , sustained lead guitar sound etc.. 😃👍 That was lot of fun!
I used to do this in 6th grade with my crappy acoustic that was missing two strings. We had one of those stereo consoles with and 8-track and a microphone with a hard-wired cable. I wanted an electric guitar so bad but alas… So I would jam the little mic inside the hole on the acoustic and get this great distortion. I could get the tone on “Shattered” almost exactly like the record.
The cassette bit intro was fun. Knew the story, but not the siren part; the Clash had a tune Police On My Back - same siren effect. I found with open D, if it's hard holding down one finger barre, vary pressure - and if you leave out the 6th string or mute it, the 4th string is the same note octave. Great stuff, dude. keeep awn!! Ü♫
Great lesson, thank you! Your detail on the open D guitar section of the song is right on. Would've liked your take on the other guitar part that's in standard tuning- it may be a guitar strung in Nashville tuning.
I Love This! I don't know why I didn't know this, when I was young, and playing a lot.... duh...I've next to never explored open tunings. Certainly explains a lot:-) Thanks upon thanks, upon thanks, upon thanks.
Yeah you got it right for sure! You know the original title was DID EVERYONE PAY. THEIR DUES and it had a whole other set of lyrics but it was sung over the same backing track! Also it had an electric violin on it played by Rick Grech later bassist for Blind Faith! It’s out there on UA-cam.
LOL, so I JUST bought a blank magnetic tape (for the first time since 1998) two weeks ago to experiment with JUST this recording method/tone. Having some issues with the playback speed on the little tape deck, which runs a bit fast. In any case, a great (and for me timely) video.
Now This is exactly what I'm interested in, how things were done when people used their imagination If only I had the patience/intelligence/ time etc etc to research it myself Could make an interesting series!
I understood similar cassette recorders from the 70s were 'improved' in that they would not overload (anymore), so that might be an issue to pay attention to.
@@12footchain The later 'auto-correct' for level regularly created weird effect, but now you mention, indeed the meter disappeared (my father had the original Philips one, where that meter would go bezerk in, for instance, I'm a train by Albert Hammond, or Kodachrome by Paul Simon 🙂
Why does he call a d chord tuning open D?My understanding is that he's in fact in ''OPEN E TUNING'' So then call it that. NOT OPEN 'D' Which it clearly is not...or am I confused/convinced? Anyone, a simple, clear, easy to understand, like what a 3 year old could easily understand?. Thanks for your kindness.
Great and Fascinating tutorial. I don't know how I missed this one; looks like it's been out for a while. This was the album where Brian was spiraling downward and Jimmy Miller would isolate Brian in a remote sound booth so that he would not distract the band. Anyway, according to producer Jimmy Miller this was the album where Keith took over and came into his own. Beggars Banquet is #3 for me, behind only Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed. There's a certain warm and sophisticated vibe to it. I would like to propose a few more songs of this LP: maybe Stray Cat Blues, with that sleazy and decadent guitar and Jigsaw Puzzle, with not only those esoteric-sounding chords, but that harmonycslide guitar, which is ultra-cool!!....Again, thanks for all your hard work. It's greatly appreciated.
Excellent job. What strings do you use? I have a Hummingbird by Epiphone and I'm definitely putting whatever you are using on. They sound really genuine.
those were D'Addario phoshpor bronze mediums. i don't pay much attention to strings in terms of nuance of sound, so those were only used because that is what i had. I have no special insight on what strings would be best, but if those sound good to you then that's great.
Thanks! It's a metaphor for breaking free of self imposed limitations. I'll repost that story again soon, but it's basically like one day you realize you are strong enough to free yourself from what you thought was the limit of what you can be/do/achieve. I'll tell the story again soon
@@12footchain Great metaphor! I’m very aware of self-imposed limits. Finding the key to unlock the chain is the ongoing story of my life! Sure love to c ur post about it.
Yeah but your on it man. But…. There’s always a but. My understanding is that this is the one of the trilogy that didn’t have the mike stuck in the sound hole. Hence Charlie’s suitcase kit bleeding into the left hand guitar. Just saying, I heard the master tape in 1979. 😍
Thanks. Yeah, I think pretty much all from 69 or so forward with some exceptions. Angie and beast of burden come to mind as standard but probably 90% of everything else is open.
I thought he used a capo in open d. Maybe cause he uses a capo with open g. Can’t always get what you want is open d and has capo for sure. Not sure but mick jagger may have played acoustic. In sympathy for the devil movie Keith played and open d acoustic with a capo on 2nd fret to play an open e to be in tune with keyboard. Oh yea it makes sense that there’s no capo so you can play the low d chord open
I have one and it works fine...I just never used it after I realized why am I even going to bother trying to write a song the same way Keith did. Or even worse, try to make myself sound just like the song. Its a complete waste of time and nobody cares, except for peeps on youtube..Better to try something original and let people copy what you do..
It really really sucked when you showed the open D tuning and hit one string and stopped hitting any more strings. That would have been the perfect opportunity for us to tune the guitar to open D and hear it without having to go find another video that actually had sound of the tuning. Good way to not get a subscriber!
@@12footchain But you stopped plucking the strings. For people that are new at using this tuning, it would have been a GREAT help to continue plucking each string so the person watching the video could have tuned their guitar right there instead of changing videos to another one to tune the guitar. You assumed that everyone is experienced in tuning each string completely by ear? Really?
Yes the infamous European signature police siren! And Charlie's drumming, don't forget that. Wow!
Brilliant lesson. Terrific background information on the song too. Many thanks!
Beggar's Banquet is probably my favorite single Rolling Stones record.
The alt version everyone’s paid their dues really illustrates this riff in the open D

I used to do that with the cassette player when I was a teenager back in the 70s. You get some great overloaded sounds.
Great work mate. All your videos are well put together and explained
Uau, this is the best explains to how to play this song. You are a great professor
Very nice - you break it down really well with the background, to the point where the hardest part will be tuning the guitar!
Excellent story telling as well!
working my way through your back catalogue slowly. another great vid

Great job again. It would be good if you could do some lessons on scales etc. Thanks for what you do.
Great lesson man! Next stones tune tutorial must be Sympathy for the devil, keep going 💪🏼
Great, useful, and interesting! Thanks!
Cool..!! I’m not really too fond of playing my acoustic.. but this will be an exception..!
Plus..it is usually tuned to the open D…Thanks man.!👍🏼❤️

If it's a strong right hand strumming ,then you can be sure Brian Jones was playing the acoustic.

Second time this week I was like number 666
In open D tuning, what would that 2nd chord be?
G if straight across, Gsus with fretting 1 fret up on the 3rd string
Wich mic did you used to put in the guitar?
Theres a little crap external microphone that came with the cassette recorder
