- Join guitarist/audio engineer Lee Flier and her merry band of co-conspirators as they demonstrate the unique way the Rolling Stones recorded their iconic "Street Fighting Man." For Lee, this was the culmination of a dream that started when she was 16 and first read the session described in interviews by Keith Richards and Charlie Watts. We hope you enjoy the journey as much as we did!
Credits:
Lee Flier - guitars, audio recording and mixing, director
Peter McDade - drums, suitcase drums
Cameron Dye - lead vocals
Bill Shaouy - piano
Lyle Bufkin - bass
Kenny Howes - sitar, tamboura
Eskil Wetterqvist - percussion
Tom Gibson - shehnai
Christo Harris - video edit
I am completely blown away by this video. What a beautiful, way of showing what went into this song. I have a deeper appreciation for the song after watching this video. And what a bunch of great musicians.
Also, I knew Lee was a great guitarist, but this accentuated what a great sense of rhythm she has.
I was fascinated by the recreation of the suitcase drum kit as well.
I hope Keith Richards and the rest of the Stones can see this. I think they would really love the video and probably have it bring back some sweet memories.
P.S. Charlie Watts rules.
Oh man! It seems to me that every now and again UA-cam just throws you an absolute gem. What talent and dedication! Thank you for taking the time to make this.
Probably the most entertaining, informative and musical explanation of a classic recording I have ever heard. Astounding. Just wow!
As a Rolling Stones-fan and professional musician/studio-owner/producer I already knew the story about the way they recorded this song. But hey, I love this video and it's so awesome to see it being re-created this way! Great job!
That brought tears to my eyes ....... So Special ! That was so special !
Truly amazing!!! Please please keep this on the internet forever!
The piano is one of the sounds that just gets me on this song.
Wow. This is quite different from
all of the different ways that I have heard the Stones do this song live. Fascinating. Thanks for creating and sharing this video.
Yes, they've always done it very differently live - they had to, because obviously they couldn't do it like the recording!
That is unbelievable. Totally crazy. I remember 1968 in Italy in Lignano, there was a Musibox at an ice cream parlor. I used to play this song from my father's pocket money. I was always fascinated by the sound of that recording or what I heard. Thank you for this information and the re-recording of the song. Very successful. Great.
Literally, the hairs on my neck stood up when I heard the song. Astonishing research. Btw, I've recorded at Olympic in Barnes in that studio. It's a cinema now.
I was also very sad when Charlie died, he had so much impact on the people listening to him.
Absolutely Awesome! My favorite Stones song. Now I know the whole story. Thank You so much for creating this. Love it!
Well, that was just pretty awesome! Great work. I knew all the stories of this recording (Yeah, a huge Stones fan, too) but pure joy to watch you all recreate it! This was just pure fun for me. Awesome job on the final recording too! Even the vocals.., Killer!
Really amazing, informative content for music fans and audio nerds alike. Nice professional presentation and production too. Keep up the good work...this channel will surely blow up! ❤
Daammnnnn! amazing deconstruction of the playing, the instruments, the production, the mastering of the tracks. A musical history lesson of one of the greatest songs by one of the greatest rock bands that will ever be
This is just beautiful guys…
Man did you all nail this!! SUPERB!!!
Raised the hair on the back of my neck- been a huge Stones fan since I was a kid. Like many rock fans I had a period where “street fighting man” was part of my daily listening mix. Thanks for tearing it down and explaining how it was done. Great content! Filtering this track to the top of my rotation…Beggars and Exile two dessert island albums! Must have and must put on repeat.
I do have a 1970 early small cassette player, did some strumming into it in 1972, doing a song called "The Pool Hayes Pub", aged 14. Not realizing, of course, what Keith and Charlie did a few years earlier. My little acoustic guitar was tuned slightly incorrectly, nearly right, but not quite and I strummed something that just sounded good. When I played it back, complete with the saturation, yes, the sound was marvellous. Well done here, Lee and everyone, a brilliant, faithful reconstruction of Street Fighting Man, to be saved in my playlist. Brilliant.
Such an insightful look into this unique song. Very cool!
Absolutely amazing 👍
Found this from the Yesterday's Papers channel. What huge effort went into making this complete take of my favourite Rolling Stones recording! From one (almost) as obsessed with the Stones as yourself, thanks Lee. And yes I play/sing as well.
and there was much applause! thankyou people,
Awesome guy's! Well done!
I'm not even all the way through and i'm getting chills and marveling at your passion for this project...yay Lee...ok, back to watching...ok, i'm back..that was just brilliant and inspiring --- thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us
I worked out as a kid that it is B - E (barred) / A- C>D, etc. Open E and capo make it seem really complicated. Thanks for all the background info.
Thank you very much, it's one of my favourits tracks of The Rolling Stones. Very well done!
Lee, saw your comment on my vid. You did a FANTASITC job here, and did everything I wanted to do but couldn't. Amazing that you got a working philips 3320, I tried but couldn't find one. Really enjoyed this and it tells the full story very well. Great work
Aww thank you! Your vid is great too for those who want to learn the guitar parts or may never have heard how the session happened! And yes, as I mentioned in the video, my Philips recorder was not working either, but luckily I have exactly the right friend who could fix it up! It was no easy task either - the belts had completely turned to goo and melted into the works, which is really common with these recorders. But my friend Paul spent many hours getting it into working shape so we could do this. So glad you enjoyed it! :)
Thank you, Linda. I remember vividly when Beggars Banquet was released....My freshman year in college. It is still my #1favorite of all time. I just wish they would have included Jumpin' Jack Flash and Child of the Moon
Great video, thanks for the breakdown.
Huge Stones fan here, gotta say thank you Lee for your hard work in bringing this history lesson dedication reenactment to actuality! I’m sure no one but you could do it. Your playing and arrangement does Keef proud I’m sure. And all those you arrayed to participate in the recording get my ya ya’s out for their spectacular performances.
This is SO GREAT!! Fantastic!! Loved it!! Thanks for putting so much time into this! Well done!!!
Thanks !!!!
Great, great job! It would be so cool to get this to Keith somehow! I'd like to think he'd be tickled to see and hear it! Kudos!
I’d like to think so too! One can dream. Thank you for the kind words. ❤️
OUTSTANDING…kieth & charlie had a bond. God bless Lee and all those who created that.
This video should be recognized. And appreciated.
This was so much fun Lee. Really enjoyed it!
Wonderful video! Such impressive dedication, hard work and excellent results. I'm a Stones fanatic too and this is one of my favourite songs. I've always been curious about how they recorded it... I too had heard the stories about it, and seen the instruments at the Stones exhibit (London edition), but was never really able to understand or piece it all together until now. Thank you!
EXCELLENT !!!
Hi Lee, fabulous job on presenting this and the recreation. From a fan for the fan! Really dug how you pulled it together! Loved the sound of the band! Wonderful!
Like you I have a deep passion for them, and dedicate also some documentaries,
Listen to the video called "DECONSTRUCTING STREET FIGHTING MAN (Isolated Tracks)". It's the real thing.
👍👍👍 Fantastic 👍👍 explained very well!!!
Wish more bands would record this way 👍🏼🎸
Simply Awesome!!!
Brilliant and amazing!
My favourite Stones song. This was a gem. Thank you and congrats.
The guy playing the piano with the black jockstrap on his face 😅😂 hahaha...
Excellent video good to see this
Well you got a new fan/subscriber in me for this one for sure. Thank you YT algorithm for bringing this video to me - I am a music nerd, and totally geek out over all the detail that goes into exercises like this. So much devotion to finding the original techniques, gear, etc. that went into one of my favorite Stones songs ever. This is just super - thank you, Lee!
The old version from Get Yer Ya Ya´s out, I love it. I have spent several times looking on many versions to learn me my absolutely favourite, but this is the closest to the original sound. I have some question about this, how can I reach you?
You can email leeflier1@gmail.com
Who knew? Now we do. Thank you for your love and admiration of the Stones.
Well done!
Sometimes the algorithm is my friend! This appeared in my feed, and I had no intention of watching all 20 minutes, but once I got started I just couldn’t stop. I just loved it. Congratulations! Great job all around!!
One of my favorite Stones songs. I had no idea there were no electric instruments. You nailed it in an amazing reconstruction! Many thanks
I shit my pants.
Imagine RS SFM coming from a quadrophonic stereo system!!
My friend is like you, hard core stones fan, i mean he even dresses up like Kieth and Jonny Depp, everyone calls him pirate😂, but my music abilities aloud me to learn lots of the songs note for note, tunings and all, and show him how to play them, the hardest time was learning Micks parts of course
Looks like the algorithm gods have blessed you finally, i commented twice to boost it up, was impressed at the accuracy
This deserves more views! Fantastic job. I was almost in tears at the end. You absolutely nailed it.
Holy moly ... Thank you so much! I have often imagined this and now you have demonstrated every detail meticulously. How awesome is this!
A real labor of love. Well and meticulously done!
Absolutely incredible reconstruction & execution. Wow!🎉
What a joyride you've given us. That song perked up my ears when I first heard it and you've upped the fascination level here. You've got talented musical friends. Shout out to Cameron Dye, the singer. Way to go, Lee -- thanks!
Thanks Lee! Always wanted to know how they got that SOUND! Great cover of SFM!
Labor of love with killer results!
I thought Brian Jones was the first one to use the portable cassette recorder. He showed it to Keith and then he bought one.
It’s possible, but Keith had his by 1965 when he wrote “Satisfaction” on it, and that eventually led to his sessions with Charlie and the toy drum kit.
Hey Lee, thanks for your Video! I got one of those Philipps Tape recorders, but its having problems with keeping speeds correct. Do you maaaaybe have the contact to paul (His Website maybe) so i can contact him about repair= Thanks for the great video!
It’s amazing what you have done here Lee! I too am obsessed with Street Fighting Man and how it was recorded. I am a teaching assistant and in lockdown I produced a demo video of the song for the music department featuring much of the original instruments plus Shahi Baaja and Autoharp. It was a project to support the BTEC music’s fusion topic. I’d be really interested in any feedback you may have if I could PM you the video?! 😃
Yes, I’d be very interested to see that! And sorry for the delay in responding - have a lot going on.
@@whattherock No problem, Lee- I’ve sent a link to the demo to your company e-mail address. Let me know if you have any issues with the link 👍🏻
Dayum you guys killed it. And i've been a fan of Paul Frindle for years. So much talent... my God.
That felt amazing! Thank you guys!
My Uncle Dominick Romeo mastered the London Records 45 rpm at Bell Sound in New York City,
He shared with me that when he mastered "Their Satanic Majesties Request" Keith and Mick where driving him nuts with their demands that sound engineering wise could not be met. When he brought home "You Can't Always Get What You Want" he said this will be a timeless classic. How true. You guys sound great.
I’m 62 and started hearing the Stones from my older siblings at 4 ( (1965). I have been a fan all my life. I’ve seen them six times I’ve read countless books on them and was a member of the Brian Jones fan club in the early 11970s. I’d always heard Keith talk about this but never seen it replicated. But I have never heard a better version of this song. Every note and nuance is perfect. I’ve probably listened to this song at least twice a week since 1968 lo. I’ll bet if you did Yesterday’s Papers you’d include that little ‘ ding’. In the middle. Well done you have an incredible ear. I guess it comes with the territory. Really enjoyed that. Thank you. Peace from Montreal
Also, I have some tiny victorian double headed drums with those little snare strings across them. Definitely gonna have a crack at recording with them now! :)
This is a great video although it doesn't quite nail the original acoustic distortion sound it's a totally cool and certainly usable sound and is in the ballpark as they say. Not certain how to match the original yet but I keep trying.
I bought a vintage Phillips cassette recorder [exact same model] but alas it only makes a high squealing noise. I wonder if you know someone who can repair this?
Nicely shot and edited video - very engaging.
Your performance of the song ROCKS, all the nuances included, down to the claves!!🤘🎸
Wow. I think this just blew my mind..
Now do Sweet Virginia! :)
wow !! That was really something !! Should be teached on university..👍
that was incredible ! made me so happy to hear it too . not to be a stickler but the turkish "zurna" or the chinese suona would have worked in a pinch for the drone at the end but those instruments are so loud . i would violate me lease . i looked them up to price them online and my wife said NO . she extremely rarely has said this word to me . like maybe three times . i am a pretty good boy , for the most part but still ...
So I had a feed come over my FB page about the group Oasis recording Street Fighting Man in order to piss Keef off. While listening to their distorted version ( not impressed ) I found Lee's little jewel of a project. Outstanding ! It's cool to discover how much effort went into recording their songs 50 plus years ago.
Wow, I'm speechless, I just suscribed, why didn't I find you earlier?
Started off as " Has Everybody Paid their Dues ?". Great video. How to get that piano to sound like how Nicky Hopkins played it amazed me watching Bill Shaouy play it. A lot less up and down the keyboard than I thought it took to get that sound. Thank you.
I just scored one of them recorders. My dad bought one in that time, 1250 FL, guldens.. then. an inflation calculattor tells me that is € 4.497,87 today 🤣
I've been waiting for this video for years - great idea to re-create recording into the Phillips tape recorder and use an antique drum set. Super musicianship, sent shivers down my spine. Thank you!
GREAT!
This is an essential Stones track.
You nearly have it.
But not quite.
But nobody could.
Thisvudeo us great a lot of work. Back then must have been something to put an acoustic guitar overloaded through a cassette to an extension speaker and on studio tape. Very unique sound for sure. Acoustic
Made electric acoustic playing through the extension speaker
to studio tape. Only electric instrument is the bass. So cool
My best friend's family had one of the original Phillips cassette decks. Recording volume control. We used it in our first recordings when we were 14.
I was afraid this was going to be too long.. A couple of minutes in and I realized this was one of these rare utoob cases where a lady actually knows how to speak my language 😊; ms Flier, you can talk all you want and I'll still ask you for more.
Fascinating bit of rock lore! Thanks to Lee and her posse for undertaking this historical project!
The riff Keith recorded for Satisfaction was in the Clearwater Fort Harrison hotel, long since owned by the Church of Scientology.
Lee, I am making a doc, and was hoping that I can use some screen shots of this and promote your site?
Very possible - can you send me an email with more info? leeflier1@gmail.com
Yet another Brian Jones tune, rhythm guitar as well. Notice he has a strong right hand.
This is an absolutely amazing video! Thank you so much for the history lesson, the passion and also the epic recreation at the end. Well done!
Awesome story, did not know about the suitcase drum kit....thx for sharing
Another Stones geek here and this is the first time I’ve ever seen your channel and you are super cool! You remind me of Joey Ramone kinda! Rock on!
Excellent recreation! Such an incredible song and recording.
Amazing. This vid is great and then the moment you start the playback it seems almost miraculous.
Very cool ! One of my favorite Stones songs for sure.
So interesting on how the song was made . Awesome performance of it also .
Great video! I was always curious about how they made this song. Rock on!
Well done. I'd pay to come see you guys play anywhere, anytime. Congrats!
This is absolutely fantastic!!!! Thank you for making this!!
I haven’t looked it up but this has GOT to be western mass ! Fun vid !
That was outstanding! Thanks for all of your research.
Very nice video and your actual performance in the end is spot on.
