I can hardly listen to my earlier recording efforts. Didn't have a clue what I was doing to begin with but that was part of the challenge that kept me in it. I call them timestamps. Thanks for putting the lesson together!!

Their best live album. (Match it with Live at Leeds!)

If you have never heard the version of Midnight Rambler from The Brussels Affair (1973 live), I would suggest giving that one a listen. I bet Keith snorted a couple of rails of cocaine before starting the riff. It's a ripping version. In fact it might be one of the best concerts the Stones ever played. Billy Preston & Mick Taylor are in full effect. Here is a clip from the band's UA-cam account:

Mick Taylor makes the live version on YaYa’s. His lead playing is super tasty.

They played the Los Anneles Forum in '69. When they started up MIdnight Rambler Mick Jagger grabbed a hat off a cop's head who was guarding the front of the stage. Mick was dancing around the stage with cop hat on his head with cops chasing him and then he threw the hat out into the crowd. He held his hands up like "Ok, you got me." The cops backed off and MIck went back to singing the tune. It was really perfectly theatericaly in synch with the song. .

I’m not sure if he did the slide part, but Ry Cooder had recorded some things on this album. There’s this album, called “Jamming with Edward” that was recorded at the same time.

Midnight rambler rocks, you gotta have that capo on the seventh fret . If you play it without the capo it’s just OK. You put the capo on and it comes alive. I can chug away for hours on that,, a Belgium bootleg is the definitive performance for me

    • @jillparu9511

Interesting choice for guitar. My intro to the Stones was also Hot Rocks. Check out You Cant Always GetWhat You Want from Love You Live. It is imho the greatest solo of all time. Ronnie hits every note on the board!

What a classic Stones song. Keith was ahead of the times with this song following his 'Keep It Simple, Stupid' - 'KISS' approach. The E tuning for slide guitar part is so f'kn obvious. A great jammin' song.
I had known for years the incorrect concert pitch, however I believe the in-between pitch makes it sound moodier/darker. I used to think the Stones, as did many other bands at the time experimented with pitch. A very good lesson. Good work.

I must have played this song a hundred times and really thought you’d teach me how slightly wrong I was, again. But it didn’t happen this time, pheew. One thing though : I never thought about the Stones slowing down that tape but now.. the very dark warm-up intro, the pitch and Jagger’s deep voice would make this a very valid theory.

Rumor is that Keith used his beat-up Maton guitar on Midnight Rambler and Gimme Shelter, probably thru a Vox amp.

He left out the open 5th and 4th strings before the E-shape riff. You might as well play “Here Comes the Sun” and “Hotel California” with the guitar capo at the 7th fret. I always do and you should as well.

Good comment about the pitch of this song. Additionally, at least one of the guitars is even out of tune with that baseline. But that adds to the beauty, right?
