I’ve been wanting to play the intro to Happy correctly since the 80’s and just couldn’t get it right. Thank you so much for walking me through it. Finally, I can play it. I have a big smile on my face and I’m going to rock the neighborhood with this song.
A lot of their iconic stuff is impossible to get right until - somehow - the words ‘open tuning’ come across on someone’s wavelength. Like, well, Brown Sugar. Ohh! And Start Me Up! Of course Honky Tonk Women is on the list. And so is Sympathy For The Devil. Satisfaction? Absolutely. Which brings us to another good open tuning tune…Jumpin’' Jack Flash…. Etc etc etc….
Having called Charlie once as "my drummer" caused Jagger be punched in the nose by, actually, the superb drummer of The Greatest R'n'R Band in The World! So be aware of that, dude!
Shamed to ask. Been banging on guitar for long time. Why use the capo ? What does a capo actually do for the sound ? I know it changed the voicing but open G one way to play & adding the Capo does what? I don’t understand ?? BTW well done . Love Keef
I admire you alot you are great player and a gift to the guitar universe. And the fact you have a love for "the Greatest Rock N' Roll band". Been watching your videos for 8+ years. Learned alot, thank you..
Little tuning tip if you are using a capo: If your guitar is in tune when you apply the capo then you should be able to get it in tune without adjusting the machineheads. The note is distorted by the tension placed on it by the capo. If the note is sharp then pull gently on the string below the capo and if it flat then pull/pluck the string above the capo. This also means the guitar will still be in tune when you remove the capo. Give it a try.
Amazing. I got an alert that you did this song so I turned on my amp and reached back to grab my seldom used Reissue KR style 72 Tele Custom, Black with Maple board, which I keep tuned to Open G (with no E string) and got ready to go. And you pull out the same guitar (or something close) to teach it. Too perfect. Thanks a ton.
Nice shirt and this is my favorite go to channel if and when I ever struggle with a Stones tune. I like and am grateful for your other content as well. One of the few channels out there that gets straight to the point and the most accurate with the Stones to my ear. Thanks!
That's a gorgeous guitar! I basically learned to play from watching your channel, so thank you for all of that! Greetings from Hungary Wish you all the best!
This the first stones open g tune I learned by ear. And you just solidified the the way I play it. The groove moving thing was exactly how I felt that loose pick hand mojo!
Hi James James not really big into posting comments on internet etc , but big into your channel and have been for years can I just say I think what your doing for the music community is absolutely fantastic your dedication and knowledge (even though you probably would be understated about it ) is up there with the best , so a deep heartfelt thanks for the years of pleasure I have taken from your videos from a bog standard guitar player living in a now forgotten industrial backwater town in the north of England ...
Picked up this guitar after your first video showing it off, absolutely loving it so far, cant believe the quality of some of the new Mexican builds, Thanks again :)
Love your channel. Your interpretations and ear are spot on. I also learned to play by ear but being older than you, w a turntable and unfortunately every album I own is scratched to hell and worthless from the jumping the needle and using my toe to learn passages way before tab, internet, you tube and all the great resources available today, Im 63, been playing since 12yrs, and except for my ear development, I have learned 4x as much w the introduction of tab, internet and you tube. I truly believe if all those resources been available in 1972, I would have been a serious performing guitarist not needing a day job. with that being said, I admit when asked to add an unfamiliar song to our sets, the easiest avenue to me getting the basic groove will always bring me to privateer or james james.. I owe you brah.
Love the Stones lessons, it's so great to learn a sound in about 10 minutes. Keep them coming. In that first verse, is there a slide note in there right after the first spoken verse? 'Never kept a dollar past sunset... {'A' string slide or hammer...?} 'always burned a hole....' Its always hard to tell with Keith, never plays the same twice.
Cool....think my guitar's the same, Squire Vintage Modified Telecaster, didnt see the head stock, nice player, found the neck a little sticky, sanded it down with 180 grit made it more agreeable, great deal 550.00 new. Thanks for posting all the Stones vids I watch them all
Another awesome keef lesson, thank you man 👍🏼 Open G + capo 4th fret, so far I can Jumping Jack Flash Tumbling Dice Midnight Rambler and now Happy 😁 5th fret for You can't always get
I feel like da Vinci writing (backward) in the margins "why is my soup cold?" I'm looking around "where is my capo?" And we're having the Snowpocalypse.
Want to really thank you for helping so many people bring joy and happiness in their musical lives and for putting up with rude comments from self centered jerks with nothing better in their lives to do than TRY to make other people’s lives as miserable as theirs. Good job James like the shirt keep it up and keep dodging the squirrels you come across in every day life lol
I noticed how you had to move right about the time you said it. Lol! And yeah Keith played bass. I believe he was the only Stone on the track. I am of the firm belief that there is no problem that will not go away for three minutes and 4 seconds while you listen to Happy...it's not that, it's, it's whatever the opposite of that is! Baaaahhh!! Love you man.
Regarding open G and the low E string, I recently told my SG he was going to have to be the open G guy and took his E string away from him. Whole different feeling to playing.
Hi James, long times (but silent) subscriber. Really enjoy your videos, and appreciate you sharing your knowledge/expertise/talent. Enjoy the Q&A qith your wife too! Question for you : when looking at the video, immediately to the right of the bridge pickup, we can see some spools with what seems to be copper wire but it could be some ribbon for hand crafting. Are you winding pickups ? Doubt it but thought I'd ask! Cheers to you and your wife ! 🙂
Hi James. I’ve been watching your covers for a long time now. Been a long time subscriber. I only have one question. Do you use pedals for your stones covers? Thanks
I know I am in the right place when I hear hey all,I start chemo Tuesday can you cover I’ve got a feeling will n Be in my iso room next 8 weeks, anyway ty for what you do
Maintaining an Open G guitar is a big reason I have an extra Telecaster
Great idea!
My tele has been in open G for over 20 years for this reason!
I can understand that one 😆 ive usually got something tuned G or open E
I have a DANE in open “G” for Keef tunes.
I do the same, but it’s so simple to drop down fairly quickly. I’ve become pretty adept without using a tuner.
So glad you love the Stones as much as I do!

Sympathy is in standard tuning, both guitars @@bullcrap9409
Satisfaction is in standard tuning also@@bullcrap9409
This guys knows his stones!!! The attention to detail is amazing. Should teach Keith’s parts in a damn auditorium.
Good job, every time my drummer ask if I can play a song I look to see if you've covered it, saves me a lot of time
Dude this channel is amazing
Having called Charlie once as "my drummer" caused Jagger be punched in the nose by, actually, the superb drummer of The Greatest R'n'R Band in The World! So be aware of that, dude!

@@ronaldoguimaraesgarcia579 I remember when that happened.

The tee shirt is great!

Paige Capos problem solved
@TooBadJim Would that apply to mafia capos, as well...? Tug on Silvio and watch what happens... oh wait...he was a consigliari...nevermind.

Oh man. I just got a 70s Custom Tele and it sounds soooo good in open G tuning!! This was the first song I had to play on it. Love it!!
Nothing like an open G on a tele.
I had an Epi LP Jr. kicking around and I set it up 5 string open G. Single HB and it rocks. Cheap money.
Amen...Just ask Keith...
open G on a Tele going thru a slightly driven Fender amp . . .

You're probably one of the best on the network and in the univers. Thanks so much.
You James have a great technique for showing all of us Guitars players how to play classic songs properly. Thank You
One of my Fav's from the BEST R&R band of all time! Thanks JAMES
Thanks so much brother. Your lessons are by far some of my favs. Digging the ‘72 tele too.
James,....It makes me HAPPY to see how easy it is to play this song!

YESsss!!!! I've been waiting for this one!!
I kept almost bursting into song! Such an infectious riff by Keith!! 😄❤️
You're one of the few players that play like Keith, with the same groove, for me the best on you tube.Brilliant!!!
Cool explanation about studio and live and specially about the Groove.Stones and Zepp have this magic thing.Drummer, soul and the right hand.
A Keith classic, thanks for this
This video was really great! Very practical. Insightful. I’m going to run away with Open G tuning and loose my mind in it. Thanks so much!
More performing than playing
You perfectly summed up Keith since 1995 roundabout
Still one of the greats if not the greatest
Keep up the good work
Great explanation and demonstration.. I love the way you teach..just fits my ability level..
A great lesson as usual, and love the shirt!
Open G changed my life (of a mediocre guitar player). Love it on a 12 string.
Thanks 👍 Awesome stuff ✌️🙏
This is absolutely awesome!! Sheryl Crow does a great live version with Keith....Thanks for putting these videos out. I have learned a ton!!
yes my favorite mistake that she wrote about Eric Clapton is actually so stonesy when you listen to that open G tuning on it it's an awesome tune
I enjoyed learning this one, reminds me of tumbling dice with the suspension at 1 up on B and 2 up on D.
What a record exile on Main Street is!!!
One of my favorite from the RS. Thanks!
“Feels” - the secret sauce.
Great lesson...and beautiful tee shirt ! Regards from France

My tele got the same news.
Keef tends to transpose songs to open g too his stuff in standard tuning like spend the night together, easily transposed to open g from standard.
YOUR AN AWEZSOME TEATURE

James James
Actually I tune to Open E & put my capo on the 7th fret.
I thought nobody could like the Stones how's much as I do, but you beat me by a mile....
Open G puts your right in the pocket.
As Keith said “5 strings, 4 chords, 2 fingers and 1 arsehole...”
Where can I get that shirt???
