@@RollinRocker Same, had similar sentiments for Mann's other film Collateral. Felt the ending was really rushed and threw a lot of things at the wall while seeing what would stick.
What’s truly amazing about that scene is I don’t see Robert and Al. I only see the characters. It’s so simple and understated and it really tells the story of the whole movie in this one scene.
The restaurant scene is the perfect example of acting, writing and directing working together. You don't need anything else. The funniest part of the scene though is they actually don't drink their coffee!!
I think that's really fitting they didn't drink the coffee. It shows how superficial the whole restaurant and coffee thing to are to their actual point/goal: to suss each other out and warn each other that they are dead serious. They were never there for the coffee to begin with, and the scene visually reinforces that by them not drinking the coffee ;)
Michael Corleone having coffee with young Vito Corleone. Lol. I was hoping for more scenes together, but I guess less is more. What a great scene. The writing was spot on. This is exactly how a real cop & a real thief would converse. This is Mann's signature movie.... a masterpiece crime drama.
I really loved this movie , I have this scene on my car , and I like to repeat their line while driving. Fantastic scene , perfect in every way, two titans of acting together , both enemies, but despite that, respect each other point of view , and way of life , at the same time warning one another to get out of the way, and stating their intention toward each other without further ado.Magnificent scene,it will stay in the movie history for all ages .
"I got an idea what they're looking at" I mean is this guy something... wanna know what they're looking at?". Awesome, classic scene. HEAT should of got an Oscar for each scene. Lol
My fav movie of all time. I went to Kate Mantilinis in about 2003 and asked where they sat, the waiter laughed and sat me and my brother at a table in that exact area. Sad it’s no longer there.
Actually adore this film hardly gets a mention in film critique..some brilliant moments in this film executed with appropriate legendary aplomb...modern masterpiece
I watched an interview with Jon Voight about his character in “Heat”. He purposefully played the character as a man who had lived a hard life in the world between legitimate and criminal. I remember thinking, damn, Jon Voight has really let himself go. He looks bad. The interview revealed his choice to play the character that way was on purpose. Heartily embraced by Michael Mann. Apparently, quite a few people in the movie business thought the same thing. “Geeze, Jon Voight has aged poorly.” We were all wrong. Now that is great acting, directing, makeup, cinema photography, etc. Amazing.
Deniro and Pacino!!!! What else could you ask for in a movie? Hell the whole cast basically. Here we are in 2018 and what do we have left? Batmans and Supermans and Xmen Bullshit. Truly sad and depressing the state of movies and music these days
Man I remember watching that movie at the cinema, the bank heist shoots out in the street in LA was phenomenal, I remember I was focusing so intensely as the sound of the gun fight was so real. Then the scene of the two of them met and talk it was just classic, robber and cop having a conservation before showdown. Can’t wait for another Michale Mann film. He is such a master at telling and creating classic movie🙏👍
It was certainly for me the best film I saw involving police and bank robbers , and this scene between these two great actors in the restaurant is in the history of cinema !!!!!!
Members of Hanna's unit include actors who played absolutely ICONIC roles in other films: Sgt. Drucker is played by Mykelti Williamson. Who is Mykelti Williamson? Oh, you know, he's BUBBA from Forrest Gump. Legendary character. Detective Casals is played by Wes Studi - the toughest Pawnee warrier in Dances with Wolves and Magua from Last of the Mohicans. Detective Bosko played by Ted Levine (Silence of the Lambs). Unforgettable characters. Yet when I watch Heat, I completely forget those associations. This is one of those films that is full of well-known actors, both male and female, but you just see these characters because the characters are so well written and played so well. Now THAT'S a trick.
Michael and Vito Corleone reunited. I loved the silence of the shoot out seen and the diversity of casting. Italian, black, native American, Hispanic love it
Would be interesting to see whether their dynamics change at all between takes. They hadn’t rehearsed before, so there’s the probability that while what we end up seeing was what was ultimately intended, there’s probably much different versions of that scene in the takes we never got.
Definitely one if not my favorite scene must’ve gone to see it 2or 3times when it came out Who can remember how the echos from the gunshots outside the bank just made it so real and different then any movie from the time
The scene is perfection. No shouting, no raised voices even. Just 2 opponents on both sides of the law. The 2 are really the same, but for the different sides of the law they reside in. The part I really love is when they both admit "I don't know how to do anything else. I don't much want to do anything else either", then watch the very thin smiles they exchange. Just perfection by 2 great actors. BTW this exchange is based on fact, the real cop told the story of running into the real Neil McCauley. He ran into him coming out of a dry cleaners and did approach him and invite him for a cup of coffee. Told him "Hey, I know you're planning another job, do it in another city, not mine'. And McCauley did say "Nah, I think I'll stay" and both later exchanged the fact that while they see each other as 'regular guys" when they next meet in the street, one is not walking away.
My favourite photo of these two legends together was a behind-the-scenes shot from the set of Godfather Part II. Pacino is seated, in character as Michael Corleone, looking at the camera with De Niro stood behind him, dressed as Young Vito, making a funny hand gesture. They wouldn't share their first scene together until Heat - 21yrs later.
Back then (now he just barks and sleep-walks through his roles), Al ran circles around Bob in that scene, who just did his usual 'staring and muttering' thing.
Actors and Actress talk about films like rocket science, they are so smart and are able to convey themselves in such an articulate way, it’s beautiful.
My fav actors in my fav scene of the movie. I love how the scene is basically about the real life actors. Always pinned against each other and both great at what they do and both having a sense of respect for each other
Thanks for posting this. I read that Pacino and De Niro were feuding and refused to be in the same room for this scene, so they used body doubles and each actor did his lines and then they were cut together. Obviously the footage here proves this is not true.
+Pan Jacek feud (noun): a bitter quarrel or contention. Actors are known to be primadonnas and sometimes refuse to work with other actors or to follow director's instructions.
Damn, I wish every other director follow the example of Michael Mann in shooting scenes where two characters are talking to each other for it to be fluid and part of ONE FUCKING TAKE! It is so obvious to the observer when the camera flips over to another actor that the scene was another take and not the take previously shown from the perspective of the other actor. Whether they realize it or are too stupid to realize, it completely kills the authenticity and the nuances of the performances when directors and editors do that stupid shit. It's like seeing fake blood that looks bright red instead of the actual color. Authenticity/truth should matter above all else and only an actor's director would know that.
Exactly. Gilligan, another actor's director. It makes so much more sense to do it this way. Actors feed off other actors and when you're doing the umpteenth take, the performance becomes redundant and contrived. Spontaneity is very important and the reward is some of the best performances for even a sloppily written scene.
This way of filming ask for superb lighting on both ends, and is not very easy to achieve that with limited budget. I'm sure that director need a small army of set up and lighting engineers to make it right .
Probably the best casting I’ve ever seen of any movie. Top to bottom the cast is A-list all the way
Can you imagine the electricity on the set? What an unbelievable movie, an absolute masterpiece.
I saw this movie 🎥 7 times, I just couldn’t get enough of it
The only thing I didn't like was the ending. It seemed rushed and thrown together to me.
