No way Mike didn’t know Moe was working with Barzini prior to the Vegas trip. From the moment news reached the Corleones of Fredo getting slapped around in public, a lot of intel would have been run to find out the reason for the EXTREME disrespect. Mike is too smart (and vindictive) to ignore such a thing. So he never really intended to do business with Moe. The trip was just to see face to face just how arrogant Moe had become. And he saw. Nonetheless Moe had it coming, the moment he layed a hand on Fredo. It was insulting and also hinted that Moe was getting some real muscle. Who else but Barzini fit the picture?
Fredo is weak and too simpleminded to understand strategy and scheming but he’s actually VERY good at the hospitality business and running the hotels and casinos. He didn’t become Underboss strictly as some meaningless figurehead. He is actually a key part of Michael’s dream to make the family legitimate through running the casinos.

In this scene Moe reminded me to Sonnys attitude in the Solozzo meeting, he wasnt hiding his emotions and opinion and that led to his downfall. It seems that in the mob business it is crucial to be manipulative with every word you say and with way you act in front of people. Even the smallest gesture can be read as a sign of threath or weakness let alone raging at your business partner.

This is one of those lines that doesnt fit when Michael says 'We figure entertainment will be a big factor in drawing gamblers to the hotel". This is right after we already saw a big sign at another hotel for Lewis and Martin. I dont think there was any 'figuring' to be done here. How the Vegas economy worked had already been firmly established.

Hypothetical situation question - I wonder how this interaction would have looked and sounded different if The Don was the one present instead of Michael? Their characters are quite similar in some ways but much different in others. How would he have handled the interaction with Moe Greene, the deal and Fredo. How differently Moe Greene would have addressed The Don.
It's interesting-- the book makes pretty clear that Fredo is gay. And the stories about him and cocktail waitresses etc, are all BS-- he pays them to spread stories about him to keep the secret.
In the novel, Fredo gets the showgirls pregnant, and Don Corleone has to pay the doctor to perform abortions. He loses all respect for his son because of the public indiscreet womanizing.
That Doctor in the novel was a fascinating character. He did surgery on Johnny to get his singing voice back and then did some work on Lucy Mancini to take care of some "elasticity" trouble she had and then hooked up with her.
Tom’s face when Moe gives him the tap is everything you need to know. We all have those people in our lives that they walk in the room and we think “ughh this fucking guy”
Opposite for me. There was still a genuineness to it. An Americana that was proud of surviving and winning WW2, and that was incredibly prosperous. We had great business leaders and a man could still become successful on just his own merits. And we have so little of any of that now. All taken away and sold off by men with too much power and too little sense.
