Al Pacino's transition during the Godfather was stunning. You need to bear in mind that at Connie's wedding, he appeared as an 'innocent' and an outsider to the family business, but he was already a Marine Corp officer and WWII combat veteran. So Mike had some steel in his character already, along with his Ivy League education, Corleone DNA and upbringing. You see the Marine officer come out when he tells the nurse to help him wheel his father's bed out of the hospital room, and the combat veteran when he confronts Captain McCluskey on the front steps. The transformation didn't start when McCluskey broke his jaw, or when he shot Sollozzo and McCluskey in the restaurant. It started December 7th 1941, when Mike decided to volunteer for the military.

I was so fortunate to see Al Pacino act in “God Looked Away,” a play performed at the Pasadena Playhouse in 2016. I was a few rows back and sat next to someone who began loudly eating chips halfway through the show. I politely asked him to stop because it was distracting, and I swear Al Pacino glanced at me for a split second and smiled. He was incredible in the play.
The strength of this interview is that the interviewer does not compete with Al Pacino for attention. He is allowed to speak, reflect, and not get interrupted, which allows him to share his thoughts and experiences in a way that is revealing without the constant prodding of an outsider. We see and hear Al Pacino, as we might had we sat down to dinner and a drink with him. Something we'll never have the honor and privilege of doing, but this certainly gets us close. This setting and format were the perfect vehicles for an actor of Al Pacino's caliber to just relax and talk and to share things about his career, friendships, roles, good fortune, childhood and acting choices that so many of us wanted to hear. He was as good at this, as he has always been in his acting profession.
One of the finest actors ever in American history. When I saw "The Godfather" in 1972 everybody left the theatre saying "Who IS that guy?" Never have I seen an actor make an initial impression like he did in that movie. He's been impressing us ever since. A true legend.
I've seen all of his films too. What a great actor, and every character is different. Did you see House Of Gucci? That was really good. Al has a new one coming out in September called Sniff. Same director as The Devil's advocate:)

My first exposure to Al P was Serpico. Such an amazing performance. I’ve been a lifelong fan ever since. Over theirs I’ve had so much enjoyment watching him. Many thanks Al
I met him on Broadway in Manhattan. He was on his way into the Circle In The Square theater to act in the play Chinese Coffee. He was kind and down to earth. After a chat I asked him for a kiss and a hug. He said "Sure baby". I will never forget this experience for as long as I live.

@@abeltesfaye_ we're discussing 2 different things here. 1st and foremost Brian DePalma did an absolute phenomenal job with Scarface. That and his other films should be celebrated forever. As far as Pacino's acting, I feel it doesnt scratch the surface when it comes to his capabilities. Serpico and Dog Day had way better performances
Albee H Agreed. Pacino is far too talented to be reduced to the performance of Scarface. Especially for it to regarded as Oscar worthy role. Entertaining film, with an electrifying character. But definitely not even close to his best.
I’m amazed he still has all his hair. Most people his age already lost it all. He looked young all the way up until his 60s. Insane he’s almost 80 now. A legend. I always looked up to Pacino.
I remember a reviewer once saying about Pacino: 'you can argue that sometimes he shows a bit of overacting, but never bad acting'. I think that's right. He's always totally immersed in the part. He even made me like the Merchant of Venice, as his Shylock was such a compelling, human character.
Even when he's overacting, I think it's because how his character was written. He has done some over the top performance but it's understandable why he did that because that's how the character should be like in Scarface as an example. Pacino can do no wrong, he's one of few actors that can do over the top performance and still be great
Just occurred to me that I've seen Al in two movies this year at the movie theaters- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and The Irishman. He's still a master at his craft.

Hate to see legends get old but it’s apart of life.. just thankful for everything that he’s given us throughout his legendary career.
Panic in Needle Park, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Goodfather...and Broadway. Brilliant genuine original one of a kind actor. Thank you Al for so much great art
I love Al Pacino!!! I fell head-over-heels in love with him when he did Serpico. I was very young, I think I was about 17 when I saw Serpico. He definitely made me do a triple take. My dad told me to "take it easy". Still head over heels in love with him and he's 79. I was hooked forever. If he made a movie...I watched it.
Without a doubt, for me at least, Carlito Brigante was his best role next to Michael Corleone. Never felt so stressed out for a character like I did watching him trying to make that train in the last 20 minutes of the movie. Completely underrated.
I don’t understand how people can lose their minds over the death of artists or actors. For me personally pacino is the exception. I Will cry the day he passes.

Oscars aren’t everything though. He only has one and he is widely considered to be one of the greatest actors of all time. We all know the true worth of his acting.
The oscars are a joke. I don’t care what they do.
M Bos Decaprio should’ve won it for Wolf Of Wall Street hands down!! I felt that Tom Hardy’s performance in The Revenant was far better 👌🏻

Eating chips at play??? It's bad enough at a movie....
I need to have more bravery like you. I just sit and silently stew in anger.

God would be hearing Pacino's life trip and having a good time...

Omg. I would frame that scarf and point it out every time someone comes over to my house like “Al Pacino gave me that scarf.”

I remember a reviewer once saying about Pacino: 'you can argue that sometimes he shows a bit of overacting, but never bad acting'. I think that's right. He's always totally immersed in the part. He even made me like the Merchant of Venice, as his Shylock was such a compelling, human character.
I love how he has a loud intensity and a quiet intensity. The dynamic of the two is really interesting. I cringe when people say he plays himself.
Even when he's overacting, I think it's because how his character was written. He has done some over the top performance but it's understandable why he did that because that's how the character should be like in Scarface as an example. Pacino can do no wrong, he's one of few actors that can do over the top performance and still be great
He can go over the top, but the nuances are still usually there and I hate when people act like going BIG means the smaller details are lost.
