  • Join me in this video for a hike in North Staffordshire. The route takes us from the village of Flash and we head across fields and moorland to the beauty spot of Three Shire Heads and Panniers Pool. Our return route takes us back along the valley of the River Dane and across farmland via Wicken Falls before finishing with a steep climb back up to our starting point at Flash.
    The entire route is only around 6 miles or 10km, but as there are a lot of ups and downs it still provides a good workout, along with some excellent views!

    Great walk Des! It’s always fun to see some sheep and a few chickens along the way! I’m used to following well worn and planned trails, so it’s interesting to see how you put your hikes together with country lanes, footpaths and walking across fields. Interesting to learn the history behind the name for Three Shire Heads- a nice legacy for a beautiful location. It’s probably all for the best that the sheep and lambs were guarding the bridge and not a troll- 😆 I always loved the Three Billy Goats Gruff when I was younger!! Have a great week!

      Hi Jennifer. It's great just putting together your own routes by studying the OS maps! It all works fine until some landowner illegaly blocks a route! 😂 It does happen more often than it should!
      The Billy Goats Gruff was one of my favourites too 😁 So I was pleased it was just the sheep at the bridge👍😊

    Never heard of Flash before and nice to do a familiar walk in a different way for a change. I always enjoy a good sit down weather I need it or not and I always love the Moors when the yellow gorse is fully out. May have only been 6 miles but when you finish on a steep up, it takes it out of you and surely you god have managed a post walk shandy, cheers Alan

      Hi Alan. Flash looked a nice little village, but I'd somehow never got around to visiting as it's a bit out of the way from where I live.
      The moorland parts of the walk were lovely, with the gorse and sound of the curlews! I saw some little Green Hairstreak butterflies too, but failed to get any video 😁
      I was sorely tempted by that pub at the end, but I tend to give it a miss if I'm driving right after, so it was a pint with Maria in the local later on👍😊

    What a lovely tour Des, the views were beautiful and hearing the birds was too, along with the rushing water. The yellow flowers looked great. The farm looked really nice behind you too.

      Hi Nicole! Those yellow gorse bushes are really striking aren't they? You can see them flowering as early as February!
      Some of the old stone farmhouses around this area are just beautiful. It must be a tough place to live in the winter though!
      All the best and see you soon👍😊

    Hello dear Des! As always it's nice to be in your company and enjoy trails in nature with such attractive landscapes!
    This seems to be a really interesting trail, because it offers different sceneries and a lot of variety. Then I always like when you meet a stream, a stream, a waterfall ... This always relaxes me a lot!
    I really liked it, Des. A hug and good day and weekend! My like for you! Renata

      Hello Renata! So pleased you enjoyed it! The moors just above are like a huge sponge, and I think five of the areas rivers start up there! So there are little streams and waterfalls everywhere 😁
      Hope you are keeping well👍 All the best & have a lovely weekend👍😊

    Hi Des.... The name Flash was derived from the trading in counterfeit money at nearby Three Shires Head in the last century when lawbreakers or coiners evaded capture by crossing into neighbouring counties. At that time it was only possible for police to act within their own county limits. The word Flash has since become associated with being dishonest or not of genuine quality i.e. Flash men (thieves and shady characters), Flash money (counterfeit currency) or Flashy (not as good as it looks)....We all know a Flash Harry....an enjoyable watch mate.

      @DesGreene  Рік тому

      Cheers Chris! As you probably know, this was only a few miles away from my previous video, so it does seem to be a good area for cuckoos and quite a reasonable number of curlew too👍 Flash is tiny, but seems to have plenty of interest. Would love to try that pub some time!

    That was cool how they used rocks as stepping stones to get over the wall and so many sheep. Beautiful terraine. The rock formations that jut out of the ground are really cool. They were in your last video too. Picture perfect with the stone bridge over the rippling brook and the hills in the distance. So pretty. That wooden bridge with the lamb, sheet and brook was pretty picturesque too. Great hike. What NO cheers! 😂

    • @DesGreene
      @DesGreene  Рік тому +1

      Hi Bill & DeAnna. This wasn't far from my last hike, so some of the rock features are quite similar. We have a lot of ingenious stiles like those "stepping stones" so we can cross farmer's fields without letting the animals loose 😁
      Sorry no cheers, I had to drive! 👍😊

      Hi Dave. I knew from the start I'd saved myself a grueller of a climb to finish up with! I hadn't quite bargained for how many times I had to gain and lose altitude around the rest of it! 😂 Only a short walk, but I felt it!
      There are some really pretty bridges in the area. I think it's criss-crossed by old packhorse routes, and of course there's about five rivers that start up on Axe Edge Moor.

    Another great video Des. It’s a great area to explore, a bit different to the core of the White Peak to its East and very different from the Dark/High Peak as well. So much landscape/Geological variety in the Peak District, which is great. Thinking of doing the classic Macclesfield Forest / Shutlingsloe walk as one on the itinerary when we are up there soon, not too far from there. And tackling some of the heftier scrambles up Wildboar Clough and Wilderness Gulley. Possibly Nether Red Brook on Kinder as well, been meaning to tackle that for a long time! Will have to think of a decent circular route for that, possibly descending Fairbrook. ATB Greg
