Actually, the winner's time, 3m 40s, is very slow. I'm an Aussie and I can assure you that a typical time for the Melbourne Cup is about 3m 20s. The winner here finished about a furlong and a half behind that.

I think the most amazing thing about that is when you look at time, Secretariat ran his last furlong faster than he ran his first. He was actually still pulling away as he crossed the finish. A book I read about him, which is the one I believe the movie was based on, called it chasing the ghost horse.

I can understand as a trainer that if he had been beaten and not at least tried to encourage the horse with the whip I would have been angry. What a nice horse and set that kind of pace.
Except that Secretariat didn’t give back an inch, this horse was up 30+ lengths and then at the end won maybe by 5. Another 1/8th and they would have caught em.
This ride reminds me of a horse called Night City. It was ran on the all weather between 1m 2f to 1m 4f, must be 20 years ago now. It used the same tactics each time by doing his sprint at the start going off like a scalded cat and putting a couple of furlongs between him and the rest then just coast home hoping the group wouldn't catch him. I've not seen a horse since try the same method. You always got a run for your money and I landed lots of nice bets on him. This is the closest I've seen to a Night City ride since then.
I remember a horse, when I was younger, back in the mid 80's trained by Mick Haynes called VORVADOS, he won his races the other way round, by just getting up on the line with a barnstorming late flourish, he won me a few quid :)
What was the jockeys ‘ reason for whipping The Steward before the finish line ? Absolutely unnecessary! Race almost seemed “staged” to make sure Steward would run off & leave the pack in her dust. Hope her win was due to brilliant talent like Secretariat.
The Steward was channeling Secretariat during most of that race though in the end he didn't win by nearly Secretariat's margin in the 1973 Belmont Stakes.
Great race and win for this horse. Totally dominated the field. But please don't even whisper the name Secretariat as a comparison. Secretariat got stronger as the race went on. This horse weakened. The Steward had a 30-some length lead at one point but during the last third of the race and heading towards the finish line the other horses were gobbling up dirt taking give chunks out of his lead. He ended up winning by about 13 lengths. He definitely still annihilated those dogs but it was nothing like Secretariat's historic Belmont win. I do have a question: how long was this race? It seemed to last forever.
Compared to the pace in a sprint race, they were all going slowly. You don't see a lot of 2 mile races at US tracks. It's like watching a merry-go-round.
@panhead....Secretariat was certainly increasing his lead, but he was NOT “still accelerating”. Every 1/4 mile split was slower than the previous one - not by much, but slower.
He said "see ya I'm outta here I have a date with my feed bag and the spa I got to get this over with fast ". Beautiful job . Just let the horse do what comes naturally. They love to run and hate being held back. You don't need to beat them with wipps or sticks . They are extremely competitive you just need to let them be them.
Shades of secretariat for a minute, but faded at the end Secretariat never faded, pulled the whole way, He pulled away from the pack every step he took
Was a awesome run and win. Some horses love to get out in front and away from the pack so I guess if you can do that and hold your position and Ein full credit to Horse and Jockey.🙂👍🏼😉❤
I love to watch races like this. I have been saying for years, my favourite tactics is a good front runner. No messing about. I will be keeping an eye on you Charlotte. :)
I'm the complete opposite Rachael and only back horses that come off the pace and have a good turn of foot. But having said that I was really chuffed to see these tactics work and it did my lil ol' heart good to see Charlotte out-fox the lads and win as she liked! Mark my words , within 5 years a young girl will win a classic and I can't wait for it to happen. If I had been an owner I would have put Hayley Turner on my Derby contender and know she would be as good as any of them on her day. The same goes for Holly Doyle. Here's to the girls Rachael!
You would not have had to keep an eye on Charlotte for too much longer, as she tried the same tactic on another horse later on the card and ended up finishing last and was beaten 40 lengths behind the winner.
@@kevvome you forgotten my favourite girl of all! We bryony frost. With my favourite cuddie Frodon! Thanks for your kind words, but you sound like my pal I bet with, he likes to settle at the back. But remember it takes a brave horse to cut through the pack, if im in front you have to catch me!

Credit to the jockey. I think she realized after the way the horse acted on the way to the post that she should just let him have his head because trying to hold him was a lost cause. I often come back to watch this race but I prefer ones like Tiznow in the classic where two horses are fighting it out tooth and nail right to the finish and you wish that it was a dead heat because neither should lose.

The horse was pulling hard and wanted to run freely. Charlotte made a wise decision to let him have a bit of his head but not too much, just like Emmet McNamara did on Serpentine in last year's Derby.
Reminds me of a race in the 80's I think it was, a horse called Run Over, it got left at the start but then when the others had jumped the 1st fence it decided to run, caught them up and went on to win by a fence, never see it run again, amazing, it would have been withdrawn in todays races.
Great spectacle when this sort of scenario develops successfully. You can just imagine the other jockeys behind at a given point thinking entirely in swear words. C.Jones no mug of a jockey, had some great winners this season
When the horses are stayers, how do the jockeys behind think that their horses are going to sprout wings and catch the one in front, having given it so much leeway? I've seen this a couple of times on the Newcastle tapeta now, where a claiming jockey lets a horse go and it doesn't come back...

@@labella9291 Are you sure that was the Belmont Stakes? I know he ran each furlong faster than the previous one in the Kentucky Derby.
@@kwgrid I wrote that about 2:45 in the morning. After being up since 7 am.. and look, still up (lol), insomnia is a bitch.
No, I am not 100% sure... I know his first quarter mile fraction was faster than his last, but I am specifically recalling something I read about the first furlong as compared to the last furlong.
@@labella9291 Sorry about your insomnia. As for the stats, it's not like the fate of the world hangs on getting it right, right? :D
Muy buena carrera un galope 🇻🇪🇻🇪🇻🇪🇻🇪🇻🇪
It was like watching Secretariat at the Belmont. Amazing.
Well, someone had their wheaties this morning.
That's for sure. What ever the horse had, market it. My God that was a race.
I was gonna comment " What the hell are they feeding this horse?". Lol
I can understand as a trainer that if he had been beaten and not at least tried to encourage the horse with the whip I would have been angry. What a nice horse and set that kind of pace.
Why is that jockey using his whip? Seems unnecessary and cruel! That horses has heart❣️
Barbara DeSelle The jockey is a girl, the horse was losing focuse, so she did right to use her whip hard to get the horse to focuse again.
No snow at Newcastle today. We had 6" in Yorkshire! Great race btw. The jockey obviously had social distancing in mind!
I can confirm just a light dusting in the morning...
Aha funny, I’m in Newcastle too!

Can’t get the cooties if you can’t catch me💕💕
Reminds me of Secretariat in the final race of Triple Crown who won by 31 & 1/2 lengths.
Belmont Stakes?
@@mikenorgrove2795 I think?
Same
Except that Secretariat didn’t give back an inch, this horse was up 30+ lengths and then at the end won maybe by 5. Another 1/8th and they would have caught em.
@@canyonblue737-8 Perhaps the jockey knew she had them covered and was easing back
This ride reminds me of a horse called Night City.
Yes i rember night city simalar tactics
The horse alot stamina WOW what a race never caught the horse Amazing
Good job Steward, Charlotte Jones, trainer, owner, & barn
Great ride, reminds me of Kotare Chief winning the 1987 Auckland Cup.
Girl crossed the finish at a CANTER! Showed everybody up.
Right?? They were casually cantering like “Doo da doo....” 😂
What was the jockeys ‘ reason for whipping The Steward before the finish line ? Absolutely unnecessary! Race almost seemed “staged” to make sure Steward would run off & leave the pack in her dust. Hope her win was due to brilliant talent like Secretariat.
@@kathybahr2323 She did right to whip her horse, to keep the horse focused.
@@kathybahr2323 I race, and she did right to go to the whip, to keep the horse focused.
Reminds me of the horse Secretary, who was amazing racing horse. Secretary moved like a tremendous machine .
.... Secretariat
Nice lift from the commentator of the 1973 Belmont Stakes "moved like a tremendous machine".
The Steward was channeling Secretariat during most of that race though in the end he didn't win by nearly Secretariat's margin in the 1973 Belmont Stakes.
Horse 🐎 racing Song 🎵
ua-cam.com/users/shorts9h146ghvPMA?feature=share
Great race and win for this horse. Totally dominated the field. But please don't even whisper the name Secretariat as a comparison. Secretariat got stronger as the race went on. This horse weakened. The Steward had a 30-some length lead at one point but during the last third of the race and heading towards the finish line the other horses were gobbling up dirt taking give chunks out of his lead. He ended up winning by about 13 lengths. He definitely still annihilated those dogs but it was nothing like Secretariat's historic Belmont win. I do have a question: how long was this race? It seemed to last forever.
2:15 the cops are on their way to book The Steward for speeding
Hahaha
Compared to the pace in a sprint race, they were all going slowly. You don't see a lot of 2 mile races at US tracks. It's like watching a merry-go-round.
1brewski2 same thing happens with drag vs technical course. But relative to the event it’s in is what is happening :)
The cops should be arresting the jockey for animal cruelty for hitting the horse when ahead by a FURLONG!
@@jaysantos536 All she did was give the horse, a few reminders to keep him focused.
Secretariat was still accelerating at the Belmont too. And didn't even break a sweat.
@panhead....Secretariat was certainly increasing his lead, but he was NOT “still accelerating”. Every 1/4 mile split was slower than the previous one - not by much, but slower.
Steroids
@@heraldomedrano851 Well, you should stop taking them before they harm you!
It was at the Kentucky Derby where Secretariat ran each quarter faster than the one before
@@mtnbiker014 Secretariat acceleration was complete at the Kentucky Derby.
Looks like Secretariat at the Belmont!
I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if this horse’s heart is also 2 1/2 times the normal size ? Great run !
Omg yesss but not as hype or as fast
Its Belmont park ! No one calls it “the Belmont “
I was going to say the same. I wonder if this horse is a stallion or a gelding?
@@MLOCharmer He's a stallion running from the people who are trying to make him a gelding.
Really smooth jockey, horse having fun, no better combination.
He said "see ya I'm outta here I have a date with my feed bag and the spa I got to get this over with fast ". Beautiful job . Just let the horse do what comes naturally. They love to run and hate being held back. You don't need to beat them with wipps or sticks . They are extremely competitive you just need to let them be them.
ive this before. HE"S MOVING LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE!!! Secretariat that you???
My thoughts too
The great one is back. Maybe the reincarnation of Secretariat.
@@wandatreece3419 Who knows he maybe. I miss Secretariat so much. Blue and white checked. He looked awesome in his blinkers.
This reminds me of Secretariat's run in the Belmont.
Amazing gutsy run. Richard Pitman must get so jealous watching people win with front running horses.
Just like watching Secretariat winning the Belmont Stakes in 1973.
Reminds me of when Secretariat won the Belmont by 33 lengths
Has Frankel come back 😂🇬🇧😂
The dulcet tones of the one and only - Welsh Wizard.
Amazing horse race, thank you for sharing. 👏🏻👏🏻🏇
‘’But The Steward is on a mission…”
Indeed! That’s an understatement. Lol!
Nice _comment_
Shades of secretariat for a minute, but faded at the end
Secretariat never faded, pulled the whole way, He pulled away from the pack every step he took
Don't forget this was a 2 mile race. I don't know if even Secretariat could have kept the same pace he did
in a 2 mile race.
Full confident jockey.
Super race never seen such huge gap.
Corazón y pulmón lo que le sobra a este noble ejemplar.
No drugs......that horse is amazing......WOW.....!!!
Of course not ... its not America you know
Beautiful! Sound of galloping. Speed.
Amazing thanks for sharing, I am gobsmacked will have to remember the horses name The STEWARD.
I’m pleased to see they are still running traditional distances.
Someone give that horse a carrot.
Such a good boi.
Give him a nice rest too.
Horses are so amazing.
No , I think it is something to see ! The race reminds me of secretariat at Belmont . This horse in this race is amazing !
Was a awesome run and win.
Some horses love to get out in front and away from the pack so I guess if you can do that and hold your position and Ein full credit to Horse and Jockey.🙂👍🏼😉❤
Yes, right . Nice comment
@@rachaeldavie4215 ain’t Bryony great? I love girl jocks with a big personality and Bryony sure fits the bill. I see your point about front runners but 99% of races are won from horses that come from behind. Unless you are an established front runner and know no other way you will tire and fade during the last quarter of the race. Charlotte kidded them all as it was trained up and she had a good horse under her that day that stayed like the mother in law. You ride too?
@@kevvome no I dont ride, I dont have the stomach for it. I gamble though and I had frodon to win the king George. Even nichols seemed shocked it won haha. Do you like a bet?
Credit to the jockey. I think she realized after the way the horse acted on the way to the post that she should just let him have his head because trying to hold him was a lost cause.
I often come back to watch this race but I prefer ones like Tiznow in the classic where two horses are fighting it out tooth and nail right to the finish and you wish that it was a dead heat because neither should lose.
IMIAGINE THE OTHER HORSES WHAT THEY THINK THEY ARE RUNNING AS FAST AS THEY CAN AND CANT CATCH THE WINNER..THATS HOW SHAM MUST HAVE FELT
Damn Right!!!
And Sham was ridden by Laffit Pincay, a top jockey!

The horse was pulling hard and wanted to run freely. Charlotte made a wise decision to let him have a bit of his head but not too much, just like Emmet McNamara did on Serpentine in last year's Derby.
I love that they show the times of each 1/8 mile as the race is ran.
Reminds me of a race in the 80's I think it was, a horse called Run Over, it got left at the start but then when the others had jumped the 1st fence it decided to run, caught them up and went on to win by a fence, never see it run again, amazing, it would have been withdrawn in todays races.
They don’t look like they’re even trying. Did they expect the led horse to just run out of steam?
Gamble lost!
@Uncle Bob yeah no
Great spectacle when this sort of scenario develops successfully. You can just imagine the other jockeys behind at a given point thinking entirely in swear words. C.Jones no mug of a jockey, had some great winners this season

Because it wasn't near the end. The horse was slowing down but had too far of a lead on them already. He practically loped across the finish line.

Yes Pipe n Mcoy jump out and make all. A.P always said no one sent fitter horses to the track than Martin Pipe 👍
When the horses are stayers, how do the jockeys behind think that their horses are going to sprout wings and catch the one in front, having given it so much leeway? I've seen this a couple of times on the Newcastle tapeta now, where a claiming jockey lets a horse go and it doesn't come back...
Oh come on Tim we all know Newcastle is not the track for front runners!
