      Yeah they do. It seems like Polestar is doing better than Volvo with the efficiency of their electrics.
      In the end though it is cross sectional area times drag coefficient that determines efficiency more than anything else it seems. The boxier and higher roofed the vehicle, the worse it will perform. More rolling resistance also carries a big impact.
      The weight and size have less effect than the two things above, except when size affects CDA.

    I took delivery of my EX30 extended range in UK on 19th March. Big problems setting up app, it took 2 days to get it working main dealer blamed Volvo. I took it for a 160 mile (257km) drive half on ACC at 66mph and the other half normal driving. I was amazed that when I got home I had 21% battery left from my 100% starting. -0.32 to 0.33 kWh/miles very heavy battery usage less than 200 miles per 100% charge.

    My e-Golf is about the same size and shape as EX30. I live in SF, CA and driving on the highway in “winter” I get around 14 kWh/100 km.

    • @KrisRifa
      @KrisRifa  Місяць тому +4

      e-Golf is 10cm lower, which is a lot in this party. This also has about twice the battery size compared to an e-Golf, making it a lot heavier. It is also AWD with almost 4x the power... So comparing them in that sense is hard. And no, your e-Golf won't get 14kWh/100km in this test done at this speed. I am sure it will have lower consumption than this, but expect it to be a little less efficient than the ID.3 that gets around 21kWh/100km in similar conditions.

    Kris, love your videos. I am on at the fence on a new 2024/2025 EX30 vs a lightly used 2023 Polestar 2 Dual Motor Performance. Any thoughts between the cars? We do have two younger kids, but both the Ex30 and P*2 would be ok, I am only 170cm and my wife 160cm. I feel the P*2 would be more practical - but it is a generation older. We live in Canada.

      @RoadToTheSky Місяць тому +1

      Hi, FWIW, I currently have a Polestar 2 single motor standard range, and will be switching to an ex30 twin. However, I would probably recommend the Polestar 2 at this stage. It's a bit bigger, has significantly more room in the rear seats, and is all together a very fine and mature car, where the EX30 is still teething. I'm switching to the Ex30 because I'm first and foremost a Volvo fan, and the ex30 is ridiculously cheap, insofar as I'm getting a super powerful twin performance ultra version with all the bells and whistles for just a little more than what my very minismalist, base version fwd polestar 2 cost. But in your situation, I would recommend the polestar.

    I haven’t heard any test’s confirming this - but when I tested the twin I was disappointed about the performance (comming from a XC40 twin). Thank you for the test. I had been waiting for such a test in good condition.
    Very disappointing result. 90%-10% is really the range that you would want to do in real life. So I would argue that the real-real range is only 214 km, which is much too small for me. Other cars in a similar price range achieve a much higher range.
    And, if I understand this right, this test is not even in AWD mode, only RWD. which makes it even worse.
    So I will likely cancel my booking, mostly because of that alone. Too bad because I like everything else about this car.

      @@KrisRifa really? Because of Norway? First of all Noway try to actively ban all gasoline cars and they gave the customer a big discount for buying an EV. Thats the ONLY reason they are selling so much EVs in Norway. Its not solely on the customer choices. You really think the majority would have bought an EV with those prices compared to gasoline cars? ONE country in the entire world is doing so with the help of the goverment. Meanwhile the rest of the world think otherwise and is not stupid enough to spend huge amount like that when there are other options. On top of that Norway is a very rich country with a small population. The 40% in Norway is NOTHING. Thats like 0.5% of entire europe.

I never said anything about why and what, because that has nothing to do with if they work like proper cars or not. So STOP putting words in my mouth and strawmanning me, that is not cool. @@KrisRifa I´m just saying Norway is a bad example because they force EVs on people.
      EVs for the city works because its short distances and you can always find charging stations but in the long run I don´t think EVs are viable because they are so expensive and second hand market is poor

    • @woeye3251
      @woeye3251 Місяць тому

      @@catha86 I believe that there are valid use cases for EVs. For example as a daily driver to get to work and then charge it overnight at home. Ideally from your own solar cells + wallbox. As someone who is living in a city I don't think that an EV is better than an ICE. First, charging infrastructure is still kinda messy in many European cities. And second due to high traffic congestion I generally prefer public transport or bikes. Here in Germany we have many workers who need to travel long distances very often, like sales people. And they are used to drivingfast (160-200km/h, no speed limits in Germany). For them EVs do not work at all. For the same price of an EV you can get a diesel car that has 2.5x times the range and can be refilled in 5-10 minutes (VW ID.7 vs VW Passat B9). Because of this I strongly believe that EV will slowly become more popular (as battery density improves), but will never fully replace ICE cars.

  • @p-driver5584
    @p-driver5584 Місяць тому +2

    This is not good. Sorry. The temperature and wind are unimportant in a test. That's just how the weather is. The car simply has to work all year round. And you don't always have to justify consumption with wind and temperature. You do this on every test. Why? The consumption is simply too high for the small car. And half the year is not the perfect situation of 22 degrees and dry pavement and no wind.

    • @KrisRifa
      @KrisRifa  Місяць тому +5

      Thanks for your comment! Because EVs are extremely efficient they are also very sensitive to temperature and wind, and that's why those things are huge factor in these tests. Some cars will get up to 40% more range in summer vs winter because of this.
