I’ve watched at least five reviews of this vehicle, non of them are as engaging or comprehensive as yours, even down to the nerd stats, the detailing, and mentioning the old style Volvo font being used. Brilliant work on this and all videos. Oh yes, it’s on my shortlist for my next vehicle
I agree with Matt Prior - hiding safety features like fog lights and mirror adjust in multiple levels of touch screen is inexcusable. Bring back buttons.
Maybe I should start a business that makes big, chunky buttons that connect to the CAN and make the car think the secret menu screen combination for fog lights or screen wash has been pressed.
@@JonnyJKF I have a young Indian colleague who is quite a petrolhead. She wants to start a company that does V8 conversions in Teslas ! Yeah... bring back buttons too !
Is this a case of pressing the voice button and asking it to do it? I drove an Ionic 6 at the weekend and within an hour, I was completely used to voice control.
Yes!!! I've just got a 2023 VW Passat (as a company vehicle) and oh my god, the led head lights are unbelievably bright. And to adjust the range setting of them I have to go into about 5 settings menus! It infuriates me, why not just have a dial next to the headlight switch like everything else 😂
I concur. While not against EVs by any means, it is hard to get excited when they release a new one. However, despite my lack of enthusiasm, I will always watch a review if Sir Johnny is the one reviewing.
Several reviews popped up on my notifications this morning, I must admit to watching a couple of the shorter ones, might have well saved mytime and gone straight to this one. As for the speed, I guess there will be a spate to sales for aftermarket HUD's, but saying that will have to test drive to see if it's a problem, after all never was on my classic mini.
At last, a grown up male car reviewer who is not wetting his knickers about acceleration times and who also recognises the interesting and important design compromises of this car. Thank you for the best informed and mature review of the EX30 in the ‘real world’ context of modern driving. How refreshing to watch a man who is not so insecure about his own equipment that he has to dribble over speed, size etc. well done, reposted wherever I can. You deserve more views.
I love that Volvo has finally brought out something that gives V40 owners somewhere to go within the brand. Premium, compact, but at a competitive price. Love the looks, packaging and performance but I’m not sure how I’d get on without an instrument cluster. Will be test driving one as soon as I can though.
Never understood why they binned the V40, they were so popular, see them everywhere - guess maybe they just lost the rights to the focus chassis or something? Was a real shame
Before that, they binned the V50 too. A compact sized estate car, wildly popular on our roads. It got "replaced" by the smaller hatchback V40 (which is not worthy of the "V" imho, as it's a hatchback) and the larger, more expensive V60. They make some strange decisions sometimes
@@JackFromMorley Yeah, it was the licence they had to pay Ford for the platform that did it. They developed a replacement, but changed plans and that became the Polestar 2 (in EV only trim).
Great video! I really like the car, but... The lack of central speedo (and maybe cruise speed indication) and the lack of physical buttons for basic functions (you can't find them without looking for them) are a definite issue for me and many others I think on many newer cars. The best controls I ever had for HVAC were on my Mk 1 Volvo S80. The designers of the controls in that car must be wondering what the hell happened since then. I understand cost-cutting, but looking away and refocussing to navigate a large screen (which obviously lacks tactile reference points) is not my idea of a relaxed drive and certainly has some impact on safety.
This is my favorite review video so far, by far. I love how you spread the driving segments throughout -- it's way more engaging than some other videos where I'm just watching someone drive for 20 or 30 minutes.
Great review as usual and I totally agree that adding a heads up display or small speedo in front the steering wheel would have made this car more legendary. I own a Kia Niro S model and it's a great car so far however I have been keenly looking at the EX30 as a potential contender.
What sets TLBS apart from most UA-cam channels? The cinematography! I mean the production levels are off the charts! Honestly Jonny, not keen on the car, and my daily is an XC60, but as always you are eminently watchable 👍🏻👍🏻
Agree with all of that, but will add: Relevant & interesting content Lack of ego No screaming / shouting No irritating music No irritating memes No willy waving
This is the first time watching one of your reviews, and I really enjoyed it. The EX30 is a car I've had my eye on for quite some time, and not only did you go over the details in-depth, but you were honest and fair in your feedback. I appreciate that!
I always enjoy how detailed your reviews are; noticing the little things is important. The lack of a speedometer in front of the driver and the lack of dedicated switch gear for climate controls etc, doesn't feel like Volvo ethos to me. Even the shiny black plastic buttons on the steering wheel (haptic feedback) seems like a misstep. Everything the driver uses while driving shouldn't detract from their attention on the road. It's impossible to perform tasks by muscle memory when the menu system on the centre stack changes depending on what mode it's in.
Love it. Finally a properly designed car for todays roads and families. Really enjoyed that, thanks Jonny. I’ve got an i3 and I love it and am gutted they didn’t replace it. This is bigger, but same ethos. I really love than you can really hear the passion and just how serious this is to you! Thanks!
This has been on my short list from the moment it was presented! Really like the car, the effort and the design queues! Really really nice vehicle, well put together it seems, great design and finally, a not black interior!! Love the “Breeze” of fresh air!! PS Jonny, thank you again for your honesty! Accoladed with your verbal dexterity and love for language it is such a pleasure to listen to your comments, your compliments and your convictions, all of which I share wholeheartedly!
Looks like a nice car with its stripped back interior, although the lack of switches, buttons and drivers instrument panel is a huge let down (for me at least) I like clean lines but clean lines can still have practical user controls
I saw this on display at a shopping centre recently and quite liked it. I won’t be investing in electric until the next decade but good to see the direction it’s going.
Architecture is not shared with the Lotus Eletre - that uses an 800V Lotus Electric Premium Architecture, whereas the EX30 and Smart use the Geely SSP platform, which is 400V (source: Lotus engineer at Hampton Court Concours). Motors, voltage, suspension system, cabling, battery integration are all different. Other than that, great review - pity it doesn't at least have a HUD, otherwise I'd get one in an instant.
If it had a speedometer above the steering wheel it would be a 10/10 for me. As it is I can still see myself getting a used one of these in a few year's time. It just ticks all the boxes.
Virtually no car has a speedometer above the steering wheel (except for those that have a head-up display.) You have to look down through the steering wheel in most cars, I find it quicker and easier to glance at the speedometer at the top left of the display in my Tesla Model 3.
The best EX30 review I've seen (and there are MANY on UA-cam right now!). It's balanced, reasoned, in depth and unbiased. Johnny - you're easy to watch and seem like damn good guy! I've now ordered my EX30, Single Motor, Ext Range, Ultra, Cloud Blue, Breeze interior!
Yes, another few inches forward with the front cabin would make the backseat area more comfy. I know you don't like the offset speedo but then I don't like the ipad sitting up so high, as well. Overall it is an attractive vehicle. All the lightweight materials and storage areas and centre-consol features just add to all the other positives. I hope Volvo does well with it.
I love the fact that this is built in a shed so typically British it made me smile from, ear to ear watching this, my grandfather owned a 2-cylinder Morgan I have never seen anything like it until now. I have owned real MG's, a 911, a 1967 Mk 1 Cooper S a VDP Montego, a P100 pickup, a SAAB vector a Loutus Eclat a Fordson Major, an SD1 a TR6 a Chevy Corvette a Mustang and many euro boxes Many thanks for bringing this wonderful creation to my attention. I am saving my pennies to put an order in as soon as I can. Never owned a Volvo. 😀
That speedo would completely put me off from buying the car. So strange how throwing out time-tested ergonomics appears to be a trend right now in car interior design
Totally agree. I think Tesla did it for cost saving in the model 3 and it’s a dreadful decision. Can’t believe others are copying. This car can do 0-60 in 4-5 seconds and you have to take your eyes off your line to check speed. makes this more dangerous? If it weren’t for this I would buy this car. Volvo, please change this!
Some moron thought it was a good idea to put the speedo in the wrong place. That’s why they’ve stuffed the car full of tech to avoid crashing as your eyes wonder off the road. (Trust me, I’m a raging Volvo owner, 460, 960, S90, S80) Shame the only thing to be excited about is the 0-60
Really like your reviews. I agree with your understanding on how cars should be. Love this car and the reasons behind the way it is. It really makes me appreciate the Hyundai/Kia group and validates their views on electrical cars. This car is basically Volvo's take on the Kona/E-Niro that were lauched 5/6 years ago. Same exterior size, similar size battery and comparable prices just done in a different way for different target buyers. Really hope Volvo does a C30 style eletric car with 300 miles range their way for those of us who don't like or want somekind of SUV style car.
I like it apart from the missing gauge cluster. The cubbies are good but they could have been a lot simpler with optional customisable inserts to suit the individual owner
Johnny absolutely on the money. This ticks a lot of boxes which other manufacturers have overlooked or avoided. Small tweaks such as a speedo in front of the driver would be a welcome change, it's just more intuitive and ergonomic. Small wins such as the electric window switches on the centre console make perfect sense, my 206 had them! It's a shorter wiring loom, you don't have to branch out cables to the doors, and the hand you would ordinarily use to adjust things within the cabin (such as temperature gears etc) is utilised. Makes perfect sense. There's a lot going for this car.
I'm surprised no one else has done this with an EV. They've utilized cost-cutting where it makes sense and done so beautifully it seems. Also, this will be made in China but they also announced recently that due to the good reception of the car, they will bring production to Ghent, Belgium as well because they think these will sell very well, might even become their new best seller once the petrol XC40 leaves the lineup.
@23:01 The weight given for the twin motor performance version is the max laden weight (2335kg) - it is 2210kg for the single motor and 2240kg for the single motor extended range. The running order mass (unladen weight plus fuel and driver) for the twin motor performance version is 1960kg, 1840kg for the single motor, and 1850kg for single motor extended range. Roof load is 75kg for all.
As always your videos are way beyond informative. Your charming and eloquent manner of talking to people (barn finds) and again explaining new and older cars is so entertaining that I could just watch your videos for hours! 🙏🏻 PS: as brilliant car the EX30 is, the missing head up display is a huge flaw in my opinion
@@Tsenngu or just a simple second and small screen behind the wheel wouldn't cost an arm or a leg... in the Facelift version it will be included 😉 Even Fiat could do it 😂
Fantastic packaging on this car--really enjoyed the review. As a fan of smaller, boxier vehicles in general I'm thrilled to see this on the market--I hope that it sells well so that other OEMs embrace this ethos.
Another great review, Johnny. I particularly enjoyed hearing comments from the car's designers. In that regard, had you spoken to a safety engineer I expect you would have learned why the front of the car is as long as it is. Two things I found missing (or just missed): how strong is the regenerative braking (and whether it is adjustable), and your take on its lane-keeping and adaptive cruise capabilities. Regarding the lack of a driver's display, I don't think it would bother me in the least, considering that the current speed is displayed in a rather large font in the top-left of the centre display.
I've been thinking about this and looking down to see the speed seems easier because we are used to it....however just sliding your eyes sideways to a speed display in line with the top of the wheel is actually less effort and an easier refocus. i tried it on the ex30s doing the showroom tours and it is really quite natural.
great review Jonny, making me want one now. Couple of things I didn't like on the EX30 were the spotty plastic on the door trim (like on buses) or the lack of a centre console.
This might really work for me here in central Texas. Currently have an XC60 PEHV and this would slot in nicely beside it for a pure electric commuter and the 911 (996) becomes the fun weekender.
How is no one talking about the hazards being not a physical button and instead a button on a screen ? This is a really dangerous precedence and should be criticized heavily
I agree. Owning a Tesla 2023 Model Y I seldom use the screen to touch a button. I hold down a physical button on the steering wheel to activate voice commands to choose options on the screen. Tesla is always about safety. That’s why they make the safest cars in the world.
I just got my Polestar 2 long-range RWD delivered to me last week - so happy - it is SO GOOD! I also love the looks and specs of this little car, and considered waiting for it but it needs a small driver cluster with at least speed, range etc please Volvo!!
I think Volvo have done a fantastic job with this, I must admit I'm not even bothered by the central speedo, driven mk1 and 2 Yaris with a central instrument cluster and I thought it was fine, though I do agree it won't be for everyone so a HUD would definitely be a good idea. Keep up the good work Jonny.
It's a superb piece of design - still full of Scandi chic despite the price point and Chinese influence. However: I'm with you and all the other commentators about the touch screen and the lack of "in front" dash display. I love the windscreen head-up display of my XC60 - and would quite happily trade a dash-mounted cluster for the centre screen PLUS a good H/U display. But without either? I'm not so sure. And I think touchscreen-mounted controls should, by law, be confined to ONLY those not required when driving.
Heard Volvo say that front of the car was too short for HUD. But for me: lack of it or a small display in front of the wheel + only two window buttons + a little bit too little backseat space is a deal breaker
Car looks great and would fit great with home-charging daily urban use in tight spaces, which is really the core EV growth niche. Well designed and well positioned.
I really like the EX30, and I agree with you about the speedo. I'd also prefer to see more hard buttons personally, I noticed your eyes spent a lot of time looking away from the road while messing with the screen...
You're 100 percent correct on that one, same with the electric windows being in the middle too. But that's also to save putting long expensive and easy to fail, but hard to get to wiring looms in the doors like cars of old. Before if your windows failed you had to pretty much dismantle the entire door and surrounding parts, with this you just lift out the centre panel. The only thing in the doors is the motors for the windows and a lock and nothing else.
yes its all done from a simplicity of construction and cost saving standpoint. from the form follows function school i love this about it. clever design. no LHD or RHD door trims. no different size gloveboxes and the design makes it look like the rwd/lhd steering swap is in essence a couple of bits of lower trim and nothing more.
Jonny. The LBS is the only car review 'channel' I trust. You speak with such honesty and clarity for which I thank you. I am not yet convinced by EVs, but the EX30 is the only current model I would consider for all the reasons you stated (new R5 might sway me next year) keep up the excellent work.
Great review. This is probably the most attractive EV, for a variety of reasons. Like you, I value the simplicity - the elegance - of the design concept and execution. I've owned many Volvos over the years and it looks like the company retains its idiosyncratic approach to real world motoring issues. This is a very promising take on the EV genre.
Appreciate your candid comments. I share most of your likes and a few of your criticisms. You left out the cell phone pocket in the seat back pockets of the front seats. Unless Volvo have decided to bin that idea. Also, weren't there some small storage cups between the ends of the rear seat cushion and the door cards? Overall design is very good, but as you mentioned, they could move the passenger cabin forward and shrink the front end. Maybe make it have a lower cd by lowering the front facia or using the front wing a la Polestar.
very nice video, all clear, We are convinced , We ordered the Chrystal white, Ultra, extended range, with 20" rims in July'23, can't wait that it will arrive in Feb'24 to drive it.
Brilliant car. I'm glad manufacturers are finally getting the message and delivering sensibly-priced EVs with a decent range. That's precisely the kind of vehicle that will push EV adoption forward. By the way, loved the video also because I lived in Barcelona for five years. I've recognised the scenic road that goes from Barcelona to Sitges, and I remembered how much I enjoyed driving on it with my MX5!
Have to say the same others have said. Perfect with porper, comprehensive info for people actually looking to possibly buy the car and also engaging. No wonder you were in Fifth Gear.
Looks great, I don't hold much hope for it being affordable in Australia though. On the speedo in the centre stack thing, I have a C4 Picasso with the big centre screen and it really isn't something that's annoyed me (despite coming from more traditional cars with ordinary gauge clusters behind the steering wheel). Really just a matter of getting used to it, I think. I remember driving a Toyota Echo for the first time and thought the central gauge cluster was actually a really cool and quirky innovation!
65k for the entry, small battery, slowest model in Australia. However it’s made in China, so should be compared to a MG4. For 65k you can get the entry Ioniq 5 or an entry Tesla Model 3 (also made in China, but with a much bigger battery).
@@av_oidif that's the case then yeah, it'll be a fringe player down here as compared to the Chinese marques. I am hoping to maybe pick up an MG4 Excite 51 for ~$30k in a couple of years time (I reckon Pickles will be flooded with white ones when state and local governments churn through them!)
If I was going to change my i3S this would be top of the list … I always enjoy your way of explaining things and your enthusiasm- agree with you on the speedo . My dad has just bought one of these so I’ll be trying one out at least as a passenger soon. However many of the things you’ve said make me even more keen to keep hold of my i3S - it’s one of the 2022 run special editions, coming up to end of PCP and I’m intending to pay the balloon though many will think I’m crazy to do so! Many things you mention regarding the Volvo makes me realise how far ahead of the game BMW were 10 years ago with the i3!! I just hope more manufacturers come up with smaller, well thought out bespoke EVs like this now.
This is going in the right direction, simpler, normal door handles, practical shape and not stupid expensive. Still hate giant ipads in cars, I hope its a phase and we will revert to simple proper buttons again eventually.
Great review and good to see Volvo on their A game with this. I moved from Volvo to tesla to go EV. The speedo is a bit annoying but not as annoying as tesla auto wipers! Good to see the charge port on the rear left so using the super charger network is more convenient.
It's quite similar to the Renault Megane E-tech, looks bigger and chunkier than it actually is, and the Megane also has that all important Allegro-esque steering wheel.😁 Looks like this will be a hit for Volvo and as always another great review Jonny 👏🏻👍🏻
Johnny, can you film putting the back seats down in these types of cars, to show the expanded boot space and wether the floor is flat or sloped with the seat backs down. Thank you
I've wondered about that too. I have a Volvo C40, which is a rocket, but I never approach it's limits. My guess is that Volvo figures that switching to smaller motors would not significantly reduce its costs or the size of the battery needed to keep the same range, so they may as well keep it as is to pick up the performance-minded as well as its primary market, commuters and errand-runners. But as I say, just a guess.
I'm actually really excited for the next iteration of Volvo cars. I'm currently besotted with my V90 but I hope in 5 years they will have this new design language in a long range luxo barge estate. I hope this is a runaway success and I think it should be compared to comparable BMW and VW group products
This is a great example of how a highly logical company like Volvo are targeting a highly illogical market with people wanting SUVs etc. not sure about those frameless mirrors though - you could knock a house down with the mirrors on my old 850 and they’d still work afterwards! Frameless just seems fragile to me?
Well done Volvo, a non SUV, excellent. A high riding family hatch with a practical square boot entrance, at a 'good price' and clever, dare I say, sensible design. The german manufacturers are missing a trick with their heavy, overpriced, large and inefficient EV's. Glad to see Volvo have kept indicator stalks for safety reasons presumably, but a heads up speedo would have been nice, but actually, moving your eyes to the left/right slightly as opposed to down, isn't a big issue really. Really good thorough review Jonny, other youtubers take note.
I relay like the styling of the EX30, hopefully they can update the XC40 to this platform and have that additional space for the rear passengers and cargo. Well done Volvo, full disclosure I originally had a XC60 T5 with Polestar tuning and earlier this year switched to the C40 Recharge Twin Motor which is so much fun.
A third less range in EV's in the cold and even more in extreme cold like they have in Sweden for 6 months of the year. Maybe Volvo don't expect to sell many up in the tundra of their country!
Great review as always, love the fact you spoke to designers. Adding only a few essential buttons and a head up display and it would have made the best it could be .
Volvo have done a great job with the EX 30. Love the design of both the interior and exterior, clever use of recycled materials and how it drives. Reading some of other reviews online I see quite a few complaints about the user interface on the touchscreen.
I am an avid follower of your channel and really like your enthusiasm and knowledge about cars, Jonny. Clearly you were taken by some of the EX30's design features - I am too. But let's be real, the base model EX30 Core Single Motor with a 344 km/ 215 mile range costs € 37,590 (in the Netherlands, that is). You really need to get the Extended Range version to get 295 miles of range, and this sets you back € 42,300. Mind you, this is still the base model Core trim level. Go for the Ultra trim level to get that panorama roof, and the tag runs up to € 48,800 for a Single Motor Extended Range (forget the Dual Motor, it is silly). But be honest, how does it compare to lets say a Kia Niro with comparable specs and range? A Niro EV DynamicLine sets you back € 45,590 and gives you a whole lot more space in the back, for example. I love the EX30, but decided to order a Kia in the end as it is more value for money. PS: I also own a Volvo station wagon with a big silky ICE...
Geoff buys cars real world race second hand BMW Diesel Vs top of range Porsche EV shows how bad EV,s are .They are 15min City cars that will wag it's finger at you if you go against Government rules .
Why lie? He used a Range rover which broke down therefore losing the race against the "terrible" EV. Why not just admit that? He had to replace the ICE with another car. Yeah, who'd want an objectively superior technology? If you don't get out of your car sweating, smelling like petrol and other fluids, and with your left foot hurting from the condition known as "manual in traffic", are you even a driver? Are you even a man?
Excellent review of this car. This is now a very important segment of the industry. An EV with 300mile range, over 150kwh DC charge, excellent performane and cabin space. The EX30 is a serious contender. I really enjoyed Johnny's approach to this car, no nonsense about stupid performance figures, my favourite quote: 'top speed, no one's interested anymore.' Great car, great review.
I recently acquired a Volvo C40 Recharge, and I love it. The EX30 looks even more intriguing. One difference between the C40 and EX30 was not covered in the video: the rear window visibility. It is definitely restrictive in the C40; not being able to see far behind due to the low roof line. How is the visibility in the EX30? Is it improved by the more SUV-type shape?
That's probably the best and most comprehensive review of this car that I've seen so far. I currently drive a Ford Mustang Mach-e which I really love but will probably go for a smaller and less expensive EV in two years when my deal is up.. This car seems to have most of the features that I want, it is a shame about the heads up display and perhaps it might become an option at some point. This car certainly ticks a lot of boxes for me so will be going for a test drive at some point soon.

Thanks!
yep, definitely modern day i3. Luv ours - light (1200kg), roomy, delightful. Shame about the low range ...
Looks like a nice car with its stripped back interior, although the lack of switches, buttons and drivers instrument panel is a huge let down (for me at least)
I like clean lines but clean lines can still have practical user controls
Not just a let down for you….
Millions of other folk too !!
British? What are you smoking. This is a chinese wired swedish design
That speedo would completely put me off from buying the car. So strange how throwing out time-tested ergonomics appears to be a trend right now in car interior design
Volvo has led in some of the most important innovations the automotive world has ever seen. Look up what Volvos changed in invented. It’s crazy.
@@Spoolingturbski this is very true. And who am I to say, maybe this is the future. I'm sure we will see in 10 years :)
(Trust me, I’m a raging Volvo owner, 460, 960, S90, S80) Shame the only thing to be excited about is the 0-60
Mini 😎
Good review, I don’t like the lack of buttons but if the voice assistant is good enough shouldn’t it all be controllable by voice anyway?
Really like your reviews. I agree with your understanding on how cars should be. Love this car and the reasons behind the way it is. It really makes me appreciate the Hyundai/Kia group and validates their views on electrical cars. This car is basically Volvo's take on the Kona/E-Niro that were lauched 5/6 years ago. Same exterior size, similar size battery and comparable prices just done in a different way for different target buyers. Really hope Volvo does a C30 style eletric car with 300 miles range their way for those of us who don't like or want somekind of SUV style car.
The embossed moose tray is to vomit into when you feel dodgy because you can’t see past the front seats 😊 21:19
Im getting one of these, but just hollered when i read that
I like it apart from the missing gauge cluster. The cubbies are good but they could have been a lot simpler with optional customisable inserts to suit the individual owner
you can retrofit all that stuff
@@Professor-ScientistWhat gauges? Strange a brand known for safety has put everything in an awful touch screen
Of all the Volvo EX30 test drives that just dropped - I am watching Jonny Smith (the legend!) first
@23:01 The weight given for the twin motor performance version is the max laden weight (2335kg) - it is 2210kg for the single motor and 2240kg for the single motor extended range.
PS: as brilliant car the EX30 is, the missing head up display is a huge flaw in my opinion
It is all about price. The ditched they head up display as it would increase the price by a stupid amount according to volvo themselves.
@@Tsenngu or just a simple second and small screen behind the wheel wouldn't cost an arm or a leg... in the Facelift version it will be included 😉
Even Fiat could do it 😂
Spot on! 100% agree with the review. I'd consider, but I'd like to see a HUD for the speedo, etc
Fantastic packaging on this car--really enjoyed the review. As a fan of smaller, boxier vehicles in general I'm thrilled to see this on the market--I hope that it sells well so that other OEMs embrace this ethos.
22:50 the weight on the twin motor perfomance version seems way off (by about 300kgs), compared to volvo’s spec sheet (they say a max of 1960~ kgs)
I think we must have got the kerb weight mixed with mass.
VW group manage to have a shorter bonnet and 5 Star crash test results, it's definitely style over function.
Agree - the dash trim is like a urinal surround - awful!
Shame on the no physical buttons and central tacho, but that storage
I think a lot of the reasons for what they've done with screens displays etc is to make it much easier to swap from LHD to RHD on the production line.
Very likely, but a HUD on the steering column would not add significant cost but would improve the experience significantly
yes its all done from a simplicity of construction and cost saving standpoint. from the form follows function school i love this about it. clever design. no LHD or RHD door trims. no different size gloveboxes and the design makes it look like the rwd/lhd steering swap is in essence a couple of bits of lower trim and nothing more.
@@TimInertiaticHeard from Volvo that the front was too short for a HUD
Jonny. The LBS is the only car review 'channel' I trust. You speak with such honesty and clarity for which I thank you. I am not yet convinced by EVs, but the EX30 is the only current model I would consider for all the reasons you stated (new R5 might sway me next year) keep up the excellent work.
What would it take to convince you?
The first electric car I would consider buying! Great video....as always, cheers
12:57 Unfortunately, it is not a European family EV. It is Chinese.
A super good review. You really have the knack of covering off all the essentials in your reviews. Keep doing what you’re doing. :)
Anyone considering an EV should watch the recent "Geoff Buys Cars" series about the trip from John o' Groats to Land's End.
I drive an i3 and this looks like it could be the replacement car ive been waiting for.
very nice video, all clear, We are convinced , We ordered the Chrystal white, Ultra, extended range, with 20" rims in July'23, can't wait that it will arrive in Feb'24 to drive it.
Its not affordable even in its ’home’ country (sort of) Sweden.
Hmm about same as a Polestar 2 base model in AU then. Interesting.
Agree to that!
I believe VW are starting to bring back proper buttons after poor customer feedback to the haptic crap.
I thought at 10:42 Johnny has straight up curbed thoses wheels but it was just the sound of the car door opening coming in before the shot 😁
If they were that bothered about safety you wouldn’t need to go into a submenu on the touchscreen to switch the fog lights on.
Love the high quality and informative content as always. Thank you ❤
I would call it a ‘Premium Badge’ its just a Chinese car like the MG and the new Renault, probably sells for under £15k in China !
Great review and good to see Volvo on their A game with this. I moved from Volvo to tesla to go EV. The speedo is a bit annoying but not as annoying as tesla auto wipers! Good to see the charge port on the rear left so using the super charger network is more convenient.
It's quite similar to the Renault Megane E-tech, looks bigger and chunkier than it actually is, and the Megane also has that all important Allegro-esque steering wheel.😁
Looks like this will be a hit for Volvo and as always another great review Jonny 👏🏻👍🏻
Johnny, can you film putting the back seats down in these types of cars, to show the expanded boot space and wether the floor is flat or sloped with the seat backs down. Thank you
Don’t get why these ev’s have to be so quick. 3.6 sec to 60 on a school run car,,,,,, makes no sense to me.
Lol exactly - imagine what happens in one of these when someone accidentally hits the wrong pedal
"That frunk is token", qoute of the week here. Keep it up Johnny, love your work.
I'm actually really excited for the next iteration of Volvo cars.
I'm currently besotted with my V90 but I hope in 5 years they will have this new design language in a long range luxo barge estate.
I hope this is a runaway success and I think it should be compared to comparable BMW and VW group products
Volvo no longer sell estates in UK, which is a dreadful shame.
Johnny! The production quality on this was amazing, keep it coming!
This is a great example of how a highly logical company like Volvo are targeting a highly illogical market with people wanting SUVs etc. not sure about those frameless mirrors though - you could knock a house down with the mirrors on my old 850 and they’d still work afterwards! Frameless just seems fragile to me?
This is a true successor to the i3! I couldn’t tell from the back, but did the rear seats have air vents?
Very very interesting offer from Volvo this. I think it will sway a lot of people to the EV market
IMO the ONLY EX-30 review that needs to be watched. Excellent fair expert...by Jonny Smith 👍👍
I haven't been this excited for a car in a long while. Well done, Volvo👏🏻
Would consider it. But no proper speedo or buttons can get tae .......
Great video though Johnny. Brilliant stuff.
A third less range in EV's in the cold and even more in extreme cold like they have in Sweden for 6 months of the year. Maybe Volvo don't expect to sell many up in the tundra of their country!
Extreme cold for 6 months and tundra, that’s rubbish. Volvo will expect to sell loads of these in Sweden.
Great review as always, love the fact you spoke to designers.
Adding only a few essential buttons and a head up display and it would have made the best it could be .
Pitty its Chinese
Volvo have done a great job with the EX 30. Love the design of both the interior and exterior, clever use of recycled materials and how it drives.
Reading some of other reviews online I see quite a few complaints about the user interface on the touchscreen.
Soz, I can't condone Chinese corporations anymore.
And the device you wrote that on was manufactured in.....?
@@RichardFraser-y9t South Korea. Sheesh, do you think everything is made in China? 🙄
Next stupid question...
Made in China will not gave the build quality of old volvo and then the risk of battery fire no thanks
European models will be made in Belgium starting in 2025.
Looks like there is a load of white dirt on the lower dash under the tablet that's glued to the dash?
That is one ugly car for £40k. I think Volvo has lost the plot.
Great review. Exterior looks great. Interior is a mix for me, deal breaker is the lack of buttons and the lack of an actual dashboard.
Don’t hate me Jonny, but I don’t think anyone is interested in EVs - they are fast but so boring and toxic

Probably the best review I’ve seen of this car. Very engaging.
Great review. Thank you. How good is the stat nav for selecting charging points on a long journey?
I agree with you. Only con in this particular model is missing speedo or the hud above the steering. That would complete this car as perfect make.
Great review pal. I've just ordered a cloud blue/ indigo & Denim Plus model this morning. Absolutely gorgeous car!
