I have had my EX30 for just over a month now. I absolutely love it. I think when comparing it with cars of a similar price bracket, for me it excels.
I understand the issues with the one-pedal driving, but I imagine future software updates will improve this.
I don't find the Harmon Kardon logo annoying at all. I've actually not noticed it on my car.
I am not sure about the EU, but in the UK you have control over all the alerts and beeps, so you can make it to suit you. I personally find the speed limit warning really useful.
Admittedly, the steering wheel buttons could be more responsive.
I haven't found the issue with the interior lights affecting my mirrors, and as far as the lights go while charging, you can set car modes personally for certain situations which would solve that issue.
My infotainment system has never crashed and has generally worked well. I also have found no issue with the speed showing on there like other reviews raise. In fact, I find it much better than trying to hunt for it through the steering wheel.
We bought our EX30 for many reasons, but one of those was its smaller size - the UK is plagued by HUGE cars trying to fit on our small streets. We know there's a compromise for having a smaller car, but there is much more space in the back of my car than many taxis I've ridden in, and our passengers have made no complaints.
Overall, as I said, we love our EX30, and for the money I think I've got a lot of car. There are a few small issues that we hope to be resolved by over-the-air updates. But given the price bracket, and looking at its competitors, I think the EX30 is light years ahead.
Thanks for your great comment 💯
I take delivery of mine tomorrow Can’t wait. Truly a great car. Got family member that work at Volvo cars here in Sweden. The over air updates will fix many things that people talk about. Volvo got a great Facebook group where they take feedback and go through everything all the time
@@andreasl4507 Volvo have said the same to me about the over the air updates. I have had a couple of issues with the amperage reverting back to minimum when charging with a 7kwh charger and with the one-pedal drive not working when I am at full charge. None of these are big issues, and with a simple update should be resolved anyway 👍. Volvo's customer service has been amazing. I hope you're enjoying the car!
@@ashleyjwheat one pedal drive Will never work wen car is full charged. Its the same on all teslas.
@@ashleyjwheat recepting back to minimum is anoying. That will get updated for sure hopefully. All good. Love the car 🚙
I have bought an EX30 and I am driving it for a week now. I recognize a lot of stuff you have talked about. Also the interior light/mirror thing. Besides that the car internet still doesn't work so I have to use my own phone for a personal hotspot. I have driven a C40 before and that was a really great car but the driving of this EX30 is still even better. Your conclusion is the right, there need to be a few updates but the hardware/driving experience and looks of the car are really great.
@maverick_fr6901 same same this last Friday!
Same car and Im suspecting they used the same crap TCAM unit from Polestar 2.
@@maverick_fr6901 same, but after update to 1.2.1 I lost the connection completely.. very annoying
Will get better 🎉
Super thorough review, I'm expecting mine for may, this was super helpful
Yes a great video!! Im taking delivery off my EX30 extended range tomorrow 💯✔️ can’t wait. Got to borrow a ex30 for couple days here in Sweden right after that orderd one. Truly a great car!
I also found reflection of the silver harman/kardon logo in the windshield of my XC40 Twin very annoying, I could see it in all light conditions. I just do not understand how those cars are being tested? I found an easy solution that fixed this problem for me entirely. I used a thick-point black marker pen and delicately touching the silver print on the logo made it darker, being careful only to touch the silver. The logo is not black after this, but not silver anymore and not reflecting. It looks like dark silver now. It can be restored to original by a swipe with isopropyl alcohol, but for now I'm happy with the result. I think car manufacturers should give prototypes to UA-camrs like Thom, for testing! :)
They did give them to you tubers in Barcelona and they all said it was a perfect car!
You could also cover the logo with black electrical tape, which I use for similar situations.
i have the same problem in my Megane e-tech with a harman/kardon logo in each corner of the windscreen, so double reflection party if the sun is shining...I just don't get it how this makes it to so many production cars...
Thanks for your candid review! I'm still waiting to see the EX30 in the U.S. but I do have a reservation in. Hopefully some of the negative things that you point out can be corrected before the mid-summer release here in America.
Yes. I’m taking delivery of mine tomorrow. Family member work at Volvo here in Sweden and they do a lot of work of a lot of things to put out in the updates.
Good review, Thom! It was nice that Volvo included a nagging Automatic-Backseat-Driver as part of the infotainment package 😜
Love your honest, no BS opinion! I'm glad I decided to cancel my reservation now...although other issues were the cause of the cancelation, I feel better knowing that if I choose the vehicle in the future hopefully Volvo will have improved upon it over time.
The car is great today. But couple bugs and system things but still work amazingly good. Volvo working on the updates to get most things fixed. So will be great work. Good choice by you. Car will be better in future
Very valid points, driver alert is just 🤯 and it buried so deep under menus. Every drive it pings so many times.
Software needs lot of updates...a lot. Funny thing is that in Volvo official thread in Facebook they are moderating these fault away.
But it's fun to drive, so I wait update to get mine a bit better.
I am the happy owner of EX30 SMER Ultra. The driving experience is great and I love the minimalist interior. No distractions from a HUD or driver display ;-) I have also not noticed the logo issue so far. The car is big enough for us, we are both not tall
Nice man you got a great car! I take delivery of mine tomorrow ❤ new software updates will come. Car will only get better🇸🇪✔️
Better ex30 more space for the driver than the ex40, (xc40) but both car models can fit an adult behind me. Great videos again 😊
Onze EX 30 core single motor extended range komt eind oktober! Hopelijk heeft Volvo jouw aantekeningen genoteerd en verbeterd! Dank je voor jouw duidelijke test! Oja als je een core uitvoering te pakken krijgt voor testen? Johan
Nice and fair review. I got my twin motor delivered last week and got to drive it a little bit on the street of Bangkok. Love the experience especially coming from 10 years old non-ev car. I’m 161 cm with no passenger so I might not have the same troubles as many people have. I wonder if the hardware and software settings vary from country to country based on local requirements.
Nice. Enjoy it. I take delivery of mine tomorrow ❤
Received some rumours from the dealer that 1.3 update will be available starting week 16.
Thank you so much for this video Thom, always brilliant :) when when in corporate speak ;D
A query: since you mentioned your problem with its one pedal driving, I wanted to ask, recently I test drove the twin motor version, and I noticed that when one activates performance mode (engaging both motors) one pedal driving is deactivated in that the car won't come to a halt anymore. Have you experienced this at all if you've managed to drive the twin? If so, please look at Volvo through the Cabrera again and get them to fix that ;P
I picked mine up 4 days ago and my biggest issue is that the volume buttons on the steering wheel are unresponsive to the point of being dysfunctional, the result is that you have to look at the centre console to see what’s going on with the sound and are then told off by the car for not paying enough attention to the road 😂. Other than that everything else is manageable and I’m deeply impressed with the car overall given its price.
Can you just “ask” the car to increase the volume using voice command?
@@rogeriomoleiro5315YES YOU CAN 😁
Will get better ❤
I test drove one this week and loved it. Boot could be bigger
Thanks for this information. I did not think that any of your negative findings was a deal-breaker for me, coming from a Porsche Macan and an Audi TT which also do not have room in the back seat. I will cover cover the Harmon Kardon logo with some black tape to eliminate the reflection.
Great car man. Enjoy it ❤
Excellent points. How do you feel about the driver assist features?
I found them to be quite bad.. lane change was super slow, ACC was very jerky as well as lane keeping.
Was it just the model I drove or did you have the same experience?
I think the lack of a drivers screen behind the steering wheel is the deal breaker - both the Zeekr X and the Smart #1 which share the same platform have this and also a HUD.
You’ve never driven a Tesla. You get used to it in 5 minutes. It’s just as far away to look right as to look down.
Yep, these boomers who say its a deal breaker arent even real customers. They just like to cry about non issues.
Honestly, I have been driving my EX30 for a 2 months and I much prefer the central display. I actually find it less distracting as there's no obstructions, and find glancing to my left (I am in the UK) easier than trying to see through a steering wheel. Volvo have got all the info you need to see in the right place in your peripheral. I'd not go back to a behind the wheel display.

I love my EX30 Twin Motor Ultra, but there are so many technical problems that I'm completely frustrated. I knew that there will be problems with a new car, but there is so much that isn't working it's unbelievable.
Hi Thom, I received my EX30 two weeks ago after waiting for it for almost 9 months. But already after a few days and the first longer trip, I decided to undergo the financial consequence of trading it for a C40. I couldn't find a proper seating position and really disliked the small and lacking support of the seats, the steering wheel buttons and in fact the overall quality feel. We came from an XC40 so maybe our experience with that spoiled the EX30 feel. It is a nice drive but I personaly am quite underwhelmed for the price point. The C40 (MY2024) feels so much more Volvo.
That aside, I was wondering how you, as an even taller guy (I am 1,94m myself), found the seats and general seating position - as I didn't hear you complain on those?
I emailed Volvo more than 5 weeks ago about the OPD problem (or in my opinion, lack of OP) and the smoothness when braking after creeping. They promised an update. I also noticed the absence of OPD when reversing.
Yes, the software is a mess. I got the black screen, multicolored screen, random restarts, the lot. My dealer even wiped the car and reinstalled 1.2.1 but nothing was solved.
Also asked about the steering wheel buttons to see if Volvo will get them fixed for MY24 users.
Compared to my xc40 recharge (not ex40), I am quite disappointed and wished I picked another c40 instead as needed a proper working car and not wait for months to get it fixed.
I love the combination of you look tired, you looking at the screen to read the message and it then throwing the pay attention to the road warning in. Kinda gives "don't think about a pink elephant" vibes.
Also the app is broken right now for me and apperently a lot of other people. Without initially pairing to the app you get no internet in the car, no google assistant features etc. My personal car has other issues although the dealer claims that once the app works it probably gets better (i.e. my headlights are forced into the lowest position and high beams don't work so yay for 2 meter visibility in the dark in addition to some other shennanigans like it randomly starting to creep if you put it to drive mode without a seatbelt connected but not with it plugged in. )
I haven’t heard any test’s confirming this - but when I tested the twin I was disappointed about the performance (comming from a XC40 twin). And the dealer explained this by saying that you only get the full performance (428hk) if the battery charge is 80% or above. Is this something that you can confirm?
Thanks for giving us an honest review in what is a delicious Volvo-appropriate accent, with some humour! We should all reject being used as unpaid beta testers for the Volvo EX30. It's ridiculous launching a car which has obvious and conspicuous faults. No wonder its been impossible to get a test drive in the UK.
Volvo are scared we'd be put off buying. Anyway, I thought VW had the manopoly on faulty EV software, or is that just in the US!? Looks like tall people will not have rear passengers. At least the real range of 350 km (215 miles) will allow any numb and dumb rear passengers a chance to stretch their legs pretty frequently! 215 miles range makes this a city car - that's the excuse they use for short range. Does it go down to less range in cold weather? The only saving grace of this car is it's launch colour, unlike the MG 4, it is not limited to Guantunamo orange!
Thanks!
Really appreciate your current and candid reviews. Especially helpful for Volvo owners (EX60) like me in Canada where we must wait much longer to get any local information. Glad to support you. Andrew
Thanks so much Andrew!!
I live in South Africa and I ordered an EX30 Core last December because all the other models have serious flaws for a car in a hot sunny African climate. The most serious is the compulsory black roof. Volvo obviously don't understand the Albedo Effect. A black roofed car parked all day in the African sun where ambient air temperature is > 40 degrees C will quickly destroy the battery. The other nonsensical compulsory feature of all the top models is the low profile tyres. We have gravel roads and huge potholes in our asphalt roads. We also have missing manhole covers. Does Volvo not do market research in countries before export? And then there are the insane features like the touchscreen button to open the glove box situated three inches below the touch screen😂. Just fit a latch to the glove box please. I don't want to have to go and fetch the key and start up the touchscreen every time I want something from the glovebox.
Ive got mine and I'm loving it but did they use the same crappy TCAM from the Polestar2 that never works. I traded in my Polestar2 which had tons of problems with the internet connection and TCAM module and now my Volvo has a similiar issue. As for center screen only, I love it. It only took 10 minutes to acclimatize to it. I'm guessing if your old though you might not like the clean, uncluttered interior.
having driven mine for a month the latest update 1.4 has made a difference. first thing i do before every journey is to sign in to audible again (needs done EVERY journey) and switch off the two nag options now handily placed at the bottom right of the main settings. the wheel buttons defo need the new covers.
I don't find anything else particularly upsetting except I'd like the passenger mirror to be able to dip when I put the car in reverse.
Sounds like the usual 'complaints'. Hope youre having some fun miles as well! :-)
@@thom-lovI am indeed. It’s ability to change speed at such a rapid rate hasn’t worn off yet 😂
i have a 2022 xc60 with aaos, the speed limit indications from google are wrong more than half the time, it is infuriating
Ben benieuwd..
My lease on the C40 is up early 2025. I think I may just get another 2025 C40 (EC40?) if they dont introduce an EX60. This is waaaay too small.
Do you think they will offer the new steering wheel buttons to existing drivers?
I hope so. Anyway, I will claim for it.
@@grzegorzlaszuk ditto. Test drove one today and the switches lack accuracy even turning down the volume is a bit of a chore
Something no one really mentions is how expensive these are on finance. Base model here in UK is around 9pct APR so it's not cheap at all
Nice review. A friend of mine ordered the ex30 plus trim. I am waiting my MY25 XC60 T6 PHEV plus trim with nappa leather,360, alarm, harman cardon etc. Could you please make more video for XC60? Any news for changes in MY25?
The pedal on the right is called an accelerator.
👍
you dont look tired at all hahaha. what is your skin routine? you glowwwwww
😂😂
My main reasons for driving Volvos, has always been comfort and safety. But not a single review on new Volvos, states how the seats are, the ergonomics, the ride comfort, noise level etc. Its all about infotainment and gimmicks.
Thanks for the review. For me the EX30's rear seats are basically useless. I wish Volvo would start coming out with an EV chassis for the 40 and 60 series.
Me too! The coming years they surely will 😊
😀😀😀👍👍👍
I'm disappointed to hear there seem to be significant problems with the software. At this stage of development (several years in) even new versions should not be buggy, we should not be hearing that some owners cannot connect to the internet, same as early 2022 owners of the XC60's. Volvo has compared their cars to smartphones. Can you imagine Apple or Samsung introducing a new phone that wouldn't connect to the internet?
Had mine nearly a week and it's nice to drive but I'm considering returning it. The Volvo software is rubbish and doesn't play nicely with my Zappi home charger. It charges at 1.1kw for a short period before cutting out. Not good enough.
It is a bug. Go into the charging menu and set the charging to 32 amp. You have to do that every time you are charging until Volvo solves the bug
That's really helpful - big thank you!
With so many annoying software bugs I don't get why Volvo just brings in a crew of 20 developers in a room and just work until it's actually ready.
😭 hope Volvo could address them soon
Pretty sure that they will. Similar as they did with the XC40/C40 Recharge at first 👍
Not a fan of one pedal driving in the north of Sweden on slippery roads half the year. Summer is fine.
understandable!
Bad thing on the EX 30, with a trailer on the hook, the acc is canceled and you need to drive with out this assistent.
The cruise control is not cancelled, only the Pilotassist.
Yes the pilot assistent is cancelled, but you have no Cruise control as in the XC40
@@user-ds7ue7jo2l yes, you do. On the left side of the steering wheel you have the button with the 2 circles. That button will switch between Pilot Assist and Cruise Control
Quite dissappointing that so many things still need to be improved. For how many years have you been building cars Volvo come on now ;) Hope they will make a EX40 :)
It will get better with updates but for now we need to wait for that first 😅
I don't believe they are not testing. I believe it's higher ups saying don't spend time or money fixing it. To solve the problem, they need to implement eat your own dogfood strategy. And that doesn't mean take home an xc90 everynight. If enough execs get annoyed by something, it will get fixed (like logo glare)
good point!
Annoying how the sound that the car produces at low speeds is so loud when both reversing or going forward and doesn't stop when you're in the middle of traffic.
The toxic Tesla haters who cried about only having a center screen now in EX30's realizing its completely fine and there is no need for speedometer cluster in front of you usually blocked by steering wheel anyways. 😂
yep you get used to it after 15 min 👍
Safety rules are getting crazy - overzealous safety systems and buzzers if you go 1kmh over the limit, yet cars do 0-100 in less than 4 seconds - potentially lethal in the wrong hands....
Bro's "Room for improvement" includes the Harmon Kardon little badge that shines in your eyes, your interior lighting that reflects in the side mirror and that there's no 'ping' sound when you say Hey Google. What the hell?! Somewhere in the last week, some email reached car journalists to slam the EX30 for the tiniest, insignificant of sh!t.
Sorry to see, that Thom is one of those clickbait-journalists😢
Not a car for big people “sorry”😂. Luckily I’m part of small people group 😊
Before watching, if you complain about the steering wheel controls, its a thumbs down... nothing wrong, it isnt even "touch"... its more like a D-pad, but instead of a cross, it is complete square
There's a reason why the MY25 will have an improved version already ✌️
@@thom-lov yeah because all the reviewers seem to be morons for some reason... just like all the reviewers went on and on about volume knobs... now everyone suddenly sees that we dont need the knobs, we cab just steering wheel control... wow...
@@thom-lov no offense ofcourse... just kinda stupid
None taken! It surely works but I agree with Volvo that adding an extra edge on it helps to make it a bit more easy to operate. Hopefully it becomes a bit more responsive/quick as the steering wheel controls on my 2007 XC90 work even faster than on this new Swede currently.. Cheers!
Bad bad decision to keep following Tesla down the rabbit hole in terms of cheap-looking cockpit minimalism … these cars are looking more and more like glorified golf carts, and the safety is going out the window with all the reliance on a failure-prone ipad-glued-to-dashboard for everything … they should only be charging no more than $15k USD for this piece of crap
Good observation boomer
