Their members consisted of 3 former Heart band members. More Than Words Can Say was huge hit and you couldn’t get away from it back then. Glad you watched live performance of this great song. Freddy holds world record for longest closing note in a song.
Great song, one I grew up listening in the 80s. The song “When I’m With You” by the Canadian band SHERIFF is one of the most beautiful romantic ballads of all time! The song was released in January 1983 in Canada as the second single from their debut album SHERIFF. It quickly went Top 10 in Canada in 1983, but it didn't do as well in the US at the same time. The song later reached number one in the United States alone in 1989, four years after the band broke up in 1985. This song is also notable for being one of the few number one hits not to have a promotional video during the MTV era. Additionally, it is noted for vocalist Freddy Curci holding the final note for 19.3 seconds, making it the longest note for a male pop singer. The song reached number eight on the RPM chart in Canada in January 1983, the band's homeland, where it was their biggest hit. In the United States, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 on May 14, 1983 and peaked at number 61 a few weeks later. Some time later, disappointed and frustrated by their continued lack of international success, the band broke up. However, 5 years later, in November 1988, Brian Philips, Program Director for KDWB in Minneapolis and WKTI in Milwaukee started playing the song, and eventually other American radio stations followed suit. This encouraged Capitol Records to re-release the song as a single. On February 4, 1989, the song finally reached number one in the United States. At that time, former SHERIFF members keyboardist Arnold Lanni and bassist Wolf Hassell formed a duo called Frozen Ghost, and refused to form the group again. SHERIFF lead vocalist Freddy Curci and guitarist Steve DeMarchi, who worked as couriers in the interim, got together and formed the super band ALIAS, along with former HEART band members Roger Fisher (guitar), Steve Fossen (bass ) and Mike Derosier (drums), and achieved success in 1990 with their first album called ALIAS with "More Than Words Can Say" reaching #2. However, in 1991, with the arrival of a new musical style called "grunge", and the second album already ready, the label demanded a change in the style of their songs. They refused and ended up losing the contract, which caused the end of the band. Vocalist Freddy Curci himself revealed in an interview about the separation of the members: “ALIAS never broke up. The music has changed. We couldn't get our music out there. No one wanted to hear more. Grunge was all the rage and, you know what, that's okay, because music has to do that. Need to change all the time. That's how it stays new. ALIAS is still Steve and me. ALIAS will always be Steve and me. Steve and I will make an album tomorrow if the fans need it.” In January 2009, finally, ALIAS announced the release of their long-awaited second album. This album, aptly titled “Never Say Never”, was recorded in 1992 and was intended to follow up the highly touted debut album, but due to the rapidly evolving music scene of that era, where grunge was on the rise and metal was fading out, it was never released. Some of the songs from this album were re-recorded and appeared on vocalist Freddy Curci's solo album "Dreamer's Road", however, many tracks remained unreleased until 2009.
Such a shame! All this time we had to wait for ALIAS to be relevant, while we suffered through these shitty grunge bands that would MOAN their music and could not hold a tune to save their lives! SMH!

One of my All Time Favorite Soft Rock Ballads, Hands Down! Yes, he's the real deal! I'm so glad you played and reacted to this one! Astonishing Vocals for sure!
Freddie Curci made the Guiness Book of World Records for that note. He practiced by holding his breath under water for long periods of time. He held that note for over 19 seconds as a joke, but they used it.
Riiiiiiight? That last note is insane! Just when you think his notes can't get any better, the last parts of the song, and especially that last note, are incredible! Every girl's dream, or at least THIS girl's dream, was to have someone feel like this for me and slow dance with me to it. 😂 That was true when it came out, and it's still true today! Ha! I can never get sick of this song. It still moves me.
This band broke up in 1983, and two of the guys formed a different band. In 1988, a Las Vegas station started playing this song, and other radio stations followed. They couldn't believe they were going to have a hit with a song from their band that was defunct for 5+ years. It went to #1 in early 1989!
Boy, don't I remember that. My senior year in high school and kids singing this in the cafeteria at lunchtime (right before the food fights...lol). Good times.
Not exactly correct. This song was a hit right across Canada when it was released in 1983 but only saw minor success in the US. What you're describing is the 6 year delay in this song achieving the same success in the US.
@@GoWestYoungMan When someone told them they were about to have a big hit in the USA, they thought it was a song from their band at that time, Frozen Ghost. They were shocked to find out it was the Sheriff song. It wasn't planned by them or the record label. It literally happened because a DJ started playing it & it caught on.
One of the best wedding and/or baby-making songs in History! Beautiful song. And as others have mentioned Freddie is in the record books for that finally note.
Interesting fact was that this song was released in 1982 and was a top 10 hit in Canada but did not become a hit in the US until 6 years later in 1989 after a DJ in Minnesota started playing it and then other stations around the US followed sending it to #1 on the charts. By this time the band had split a few years before this but some of the band members (including the lead singer Freddy Curci) re-formed a band called Alias. Under that band name they had a hit called "More Than Words Can Say" that became a hit a year after this song. Freddy held the record for the longest note held...he said he was waiting for the producer to motion to cut off. This is one of my all time fav songs!!
Thanks for your reaction! Lead singer, Freddy Curci, was in the Guinness Book Of World records for longest note held in a pop song. I don't know why he did not get the recognition he deserved in the US but he and this song were popular in Canada where he was born and raised and often a wedding song in the 80's in Canada. He was a good song writer and did some songs in the Lifetime series "Army Wives".
This song in particular became a huge hit in the U.S. But only upon re-release. Sometimes we need a second listen (and a few years) just to be sure. lol
Great, great song! So beautiful! It was originally released in the US in January 1983. It peaked at No. 61 on the Billboard Hot 100. I don’t even remember it from 1983. However, it was RE-released in 1988, and it then hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Amazing. 1988 is actually when I remembered it from. ❤
Sheriff was a pop-rock group from Toronto who had one-hit in the U.S.: "When I'm With You" which charted twice on the Billboard Hot 100. The first charting was in 1983 when it peaked @ #61 after 7 weeks on the chart. But in Nov. 1988, it re-entered the Hot 100 [due to some midwestern DJs playing it on the radio & Capitol Records re-released the single.] This time "WIWY" did the seemingly impossible-- on Feb.4 1989, it hit #1! Sheriff had already disbanded in 1985.
Thank you so much for appreciating our music which we are happy to share with you. Sheriff was an underrated band. Two of the original members formed a popular band called Frozen ghost. Since Sheriff only came out with one album you might want to check out Dream Come True by Frozen Ghost another power ballad you will like or i forgot about Alias another band the Freddy sang in. The song is More Than Words Can say. This is a beautiful song. When it came out i thought about by ex-gf who broke up with me after 7 days. 13 years later we got married and recently celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary
Two bands formed out of the ashes of Sheriff. Alias, which had a hit with "More Than Words Can Say" and Frozen Ghost, who were bigger in Canada, but had a couple of minor hits in the U.S.A with "What Should I See" and "Dream Come True". They are severely underrated and deserve a listen.
Frozen Ghost is an amazingly underrated band. I think there’s not a bad track on any of their albums. Some are better than others, but still, not a bad track anywhere.
Did you know this song was originally released in January 1983, but peaked at only No. 61 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, 5 years later it was re-released, and it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988.
Sheriff was a cool Canadian band from the very early 80s. I actually had this on cassette back in those ancient times. The blond guy on the right went on to form a band called Frozen Ghost in the late 80s as well with some great songs. The story goes that back in the late 90s? some DJ in the Carolina's played this song late one night, and the girls went crazy. Apparently the writer make something like 800K from the royalties
Love your channel guys!! Ok, so I'm going to show my age....I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago in the 70s and 80s and there was a Roller Skating Rink near my house. Back then, they had a DJ in a raised booth in the rink. This particular DJ would play this song when it was a "couple's skate." I would grab this girl I liked and we would skate together to this song. She could skate backwards, so we looked pretty cool! We were crushing on each other (was pretty innocent) but good times and great memories! Long live the children of the 80's!!!
This has a crazy back dtory to it.The band was formed in 1979 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and consisted of vocalist Freddy Curci, guitarist Steve DeMarchi, keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Arnold Lanni, bassist Wolf Hassel and drummer Ric Dowhan, later replaced by Rob Elliott. The band's only full-length release was a self-titled 1982 album, that featured a Canadian Top 40 hit, "You Remind Me" as well as their most famous song, "When I'm with You", which reached No. 8 in Canada and No. 61 in the United States in 1983. Five years later it was re-released and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. The band split up in 1985, citing internal tensions. Lanni and Hassel went on to form Frozen Ghost and racked up several hits in Canada, the biggest of which was "Should I See," which reached No. 69 in the U.S. Six years after "When I'm with You" had been a chart hit in Canada, Las Vegas DJ Jay Taylor began playing the song. KRXY DJ Gabe Baptiste also started playing "When I'm With You," and listener response was positive. As a result, Capitol Records re-released the song. It subsequently became No. 1 in the United States in February 1989. While Curci and DeMarchi made efforts to re-form Sheriff, a reunion was not to be. The lack of interest from other Sheriff bandmembers eventually led Curci and DeMarchi to team up with ex-Heart members Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen and Mike Derosier to form Alias More Than Words Can Say was a phenominal hit right out of the gate - ua-cam.com/video/ZPr7xs_CG-0/v-deo.htmlsi=_qTCJVyIZiII6z2N.
I bought this album (via cassette tape) and Wrough & Wready by Wrabit (also a Canadian band) with one of my first ever paychecks in 1982. When I hear it now I feel butterflies like I did at 16, hanging out with the first boy I really, really liked, my first love. I cried many tears, curled up on my bed, listening to this song/album after we broke up. It was one of ‘our’ songs and I tortured myself by playing it (and several other love songs) over and over.
Interesting story about this song: it was originally released in 1983 and did ok in Canada, but not in the US. The band couldn't break through in the US, so they broke up. Fast forward to 1989, a DJ started playing this song and people loved it, then more stations played it and Capitol records re-released the song. It went to #1 in the US. A 6-year old song from a band that didn't exist anymore. The 80's were awesome!
I remember listening to this a few times on the radio when it came out. I never listened to it closely until now, and man,I have such an appreciation for everything about this song. That young man's voice is phenomenal.
Of the songs ever written, there are songs about love and then there are love songs. They are entirely different from each other. This song is a real love song and is as timeless and ageless as love itself. Whether sang by a child or by an elder, it speaks volumes of genuine romance in sheer simplicity and elegance. The fact that it was written as a Valentine's Day gift from this band's pianist to his new girlfriend whom he married a couple of years later should testify of its standard, for few songs in history capture the moment as this one has. Loved the video, guys.
I'm 56. I remember when this song was released the first time, I loved it instantly and released again 6 years later! I can't get enough of it. Freddy Curci's voice is amazing.
Another classic Canadian rock band of 70s, 80s, and 90s is Red Rider, aka Tom Cochrane and Red Rider. They had many hits, but the first big one was Lunatic Fringe, check them out.
It amazes me that these hard rocking bands can crank it down a couple of notches and give us these incredible power ballads. It truly is the best of both worlds
Amber’s reaction to the last note… priceless! That was awesome! This was one of my favourite songs from the 80s. It’s beautiful and just perfectly encapsulates how a man feels when he’s in love. Surprised actually it’s not played more often today.
Freddie Cucci... There awesome. I'm 57..me and my wife was dating. It was our song. I love listening to you all. Thanks for appreciating the music I grew up with!!
Saludos !!.
Freddy Curci is the lead vocalist and later founded Alias where he had another big hit with More Than Words Can Say (different than the similarly named song by Extreme). Check that one out sometime.
Gonna give you fine folks a new word (actually a few of them.) When a note is "carried out" as you put it, it is said they "sustain" the note. It is one of the four pillars of musical note-making. "Attack" is how quickly a note takes to go from silence to loudest volume. "Decay" is how long it takes to go from peak to sustain level. "Sustain" as we already covered is how long the note is maintained. And finally, "Release" is how long it takes from the end of sustain to nil volume. Taken together, these are known as an ADSR curve, and is more-or-less like an instrument's or voice's "fingerprint" and gives general characteristics for the sound. I know this is a bit heady and academic, but you'll find these terms used all the time in music. Great review as always kids! Love your stuff!
This was my wife and I's first wedding dance together. 32 years ago so holds a special place in my heart. Cannot beat the 80s ballads. I still want you guys to check out Dr. Hook and the medicine shows song called "kiss it away" and hear the raw emotion he has in that song.
Never in a million years would I see you react to this. It's been a favorite of mine for 35 years. Will you pretty please, with a cherry on top, react to Dimash Kudaibergen singing S.O.S? I promise you, you've never heard anything like him. There's a reason Dimash is the most reacted to singer/band in UA-cam history.

This song is stupendous!! Yeah that’s a real note!! Every time I sing this song I can NEVER hold that note at the end in one breath and my voice cracks when I do try it!!
Guys, thank you so much for doing another suggestion! I'm sure there are a lot of people who had this song played at their wedding. It's beautiful. Song Suggestion: Saga--On The Loose (1981). Amber, loved your reaction to the last note :D that made my night.
Yes, that note is real. Using oxygen properly is something that I think is commonly trained in vocal lessons. Think of it like taking a super deep breath (which you can actually see him do here if you look closely, just before he starts singing that last line) and then letting it go very slowly. It takes some training but absolutely it can be done.
Lol!!!! I knew y'all would be blown away by that last note!! Awesome!!!! Keep up the good work!!! Now, since that's out of the way,,, ,,Rob, when it comes to the eyes you don't mess around!!! You ain't got but 2 of them!! GO TO THE DOCTOR!!! Amber,,, load him him and take him to go see the DOCTOR!!! Okay,,, now since I've thrown in my opinion I'll go mind my own business. If I didn't care, I'd say nothing at all. Love y'all!!!
Greetings Jay and Amber Welcome to the music stylings of Sheriff. The original band consisted of Freddie Curci (lead vocals), Steve DeMarchi (Guitarist), Arnold Lanni (keyboards / rhythmic guitarist), Wolf Hassel (bassist), and Rob Elliot (drummer). Unfortunately, it only reached to 61 on the US Billboard 100 when it was first released March 14, 1983. It took until February 4, 1989 for the song to hit #1 on the Billboard 100 when it was re-released by Capitol Records. This was in large part thanks to program director for WDBW and WKTI in Minneapolis-St. Paul and Milwaukee (respectively), Las Vegas DJ Jay Taylor, and KRXY DJ Gabe Bautiste in Shelton, Washington. They played it as much as they could get away with it. Soon after, other radio stations and clubs started to play it. Because of lack of success at the beginning, the band broke up in 85, 4 years before reaching fame. That note at the end is COMPLETELY real, Curci held the male singing record for the longest closing note in a song with 25 seconds. The longest closing note for a female is Kisty "Melba" Moore in "The Other Side of the Rainbow" at 36 seconds. Recently in March 27, 2011, Tee Green took the #1 spot with 39 seconds in the song, "Everything Must Change". Other songs you can check out are "You Remind Me" and "More Than Words Can Say" in their new band Alias. Otherwise, they are a 1 Hit Wonder band. Stay Golden and GO to the Doctor, Jay)))

He was also with a gropu called Alias. Listem to More Than Words Can Say. He is a true talent. Love you guys!!
It's his breath control and voice tone and how he held that last note. I cry everytime. Freddy Curci 💓
OMG! I havent heard this song in YEARS. I forgot about. Thank u for the memories.
This band broke up in 1983, and two of the guys formed a different band. In 1988, a Las Vegas station started playing this song, and other radio stations followed. They couldn't believe they were going to have a hit with a song from their band that was defunct for 5+ years. It went to #1 in early 1989!
They formed Frozen Ghost.
Boy, don't I remember that. My senior year in high school and kids singing this in the cafeteria at lunchtime (right before the food fights...lol). Good times.
I didn't know that! Cool!
Yup..it my wedding song, lol.
@@andie361 mine too.
Sometimes we need a second listen (and a few years) just to be sure. lol
Yes and this song actually didn't become a hit until the band had faded away and broken up.
Freddy Curci is the singer. I think that has the record for the longest-held note in any hit song.
He does. It’s the last note of this song. 🙌💯
I think it's actually Morten Harket of a-ha in "Summer Moved On". 20.2 seconds.
Finally! I been trying to get reactors to do this for years. Longest note ever 😂
Wow, great history/trivia. Love that stuff. Thanks
A staple for slow-dances in high school... such memories...
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. If I ever got married I would want this as the first dance with my new bride.
Taking me way back to my first love. This was our song. Thank you for helping me recall such sweet memories. ❤
Lead singer formed a band named 'Alias'... Their main song was a power ballad called 'More Than Words Can Say''...
Yesss I had that CD.. they are amazing
The other members went on to Frozen Ghost.
One of the best choruses of the Power Ballad era 🤘🏽❤️🤘🏽❤️
Yes it was a real note! Beautiful and unbelievable all at the same time! ❤
HE IS ALSO THE FRONT SINGER OF THE BAND CALLED "ALIAS" TRY THIER SONG "MORE THAN WORDS CAN SAY"
It was called More Than Words Can Say. 😊
I remember Frozen Ghost. "What Should I See" was in heavy rotation on Canadian rock radio for a few years.
Holy Cow, I completely forgot about Alias!
@@Vinylrebel72 haha thanks.....edited. Wasn't a huge fan of Alias.
Frozen Ghost is an amazingly underrated band. I think there’s not a bad track on any of their albums. Some are better than others, but still, not a bad track anywhere.
I remember this song from back in the day. I still get chills from Freddie's beautiful voice!! 🥰
There was nothing like Sheriff at the time...early 80s. Great band, fabulous songs...🎤🎶🇨🇦
One of my all time favorite songs! An amazing singer! This video is actually the studio version of the song.
Did you know this song was originally released in January 1983, but peaked at only No. 61 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, 5 years later it was re-released, and it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988.
Correct. But the real live version is here ua-cam.com/video/WKGYYWBgXrc/v-deo.html
It's your eyes you foolish man, go to the doctor! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Love this song!!!
So glad you guys got around to this song! I’ve been begging for months. That note at the end that only dogs can hear! OMG!🤯
I had long forgotten about these wonderful songs from the '80s. Thank you for bringing them back!
"Was that real? Was that a real note?" 😊
indeed it was 19.3 secs
Love this song...who wouldn't want a love like this!
Another classic Canadian rock band of 70s, 80s, and 90s is Red Rider, aka Tom Cochrane and Red Rider. They had many hits, but the first big one was Lunatic Fringe, check them out.
Just hearing the first few notes almost makes me have tears!!!!
Saludos !!.
Thank you so much for playing this. Yep. The last note was real 🇨🇦 Thank you for heading back up here again. ❤
Freddy Curci is the lead vocalist and later founded Alias where he had another big hit with More Than Words Can Say (different than the similarly named song by Extreme). Check that one out sometime.
I loved you alls reaction on that last note , so much I had to come back and watch it again ! ❤
My wife and started dating in 1982. We were 15. This was and still is our song.
This was me and my gfs song before she passed away three years ago. Made me cry 😭
😢 {{Angel Hugs}}😢
I love, love, love this song. Great slow dance song!!!
This song is the soundtrack to my first broken heart. Matt, wherever you are, I never forgot you. 😘
The ultimate 80's love song! A classic! Many slow dances I've danced to this!
I feel sorry for anyone who hasnt experienced love like hes singing about...the best feeling EVER!
And yet again, Canada does not disappoint lol Excellent song. Anyone from Canada knows this song by heart. Great reaction!
The note at the end gives me chill bumps every time .
Holds the record for the longest note. I believe it's 20+ seconds.
That note will now be tattooed on your heart and memory!!! This song makes me cry everytime😢❤❤
This song was an instant classic as soon as you hear it the first time
Gotta love some '80's love from Canada. Great tune. Next? How about 'Innocence' by 'Harlequin' from 1980 of course. Cheers.
I love Love Crimes. Their best album. Cheers from the Netherlands. That Sheriff album is one of my favorite AOR records of the 80s.
This was my wife and I's first wedding dance together. 32 years ago so holds a special place in my heart. Cannot beat the 80s ballads. I still want you guys to check out Dr. Hook and the medicine shows song called "kiss it away" and hear the raw emotion he has in that song.
It was his real note and it was... You guessed it.. BRILLIANT!
He held that last note longer than my phone's battery life
2024 and it's still as good. Amazing 80's!
Freddie Curci is so underrated. His group Alias had a minor hit with More Than Words Can Say
This song was featured on American Top 40 record show as holding the longest note in rock chart history. This was a #1 hit in the U.S.. Lead singer Freddie Curci would hit the top of the charts again years later with a band called Alias and a song called “More Than Words Can Say”. Check it out. ❤️🇨🇦
Another Canadian band you would love is SAGA (80's/90's). Their musicianship is Next Level. Try "Wind Him Up" or "On The Loose".
Finally. I have been waiting for this reaction since I joined. Again you two did not disappoint. I believe Freddy Curci holds the Guinness Book of World Record for longest note held in a song. Also check him out with Alias singing “More Than Words Can Say”. It’s another beauty. He kinda looks like he could be Barry Manilow’s son. What a talented guy. Amber, I loved your face at the end. Priceless!!!!
Nothing more important than eyes
This song is stupendous!! Yeah that’s a real note!! Every time I sing this song I can NEVER hold that note at the end in one breath and my voice cracks when I do try it!!
Guys, thank you so much for doing another suggestion! I'm sure there are a lot of people who had this song played at their wedding. It's beautiful. Song Suggestion: Saga--On The Loose (1981). Amber, loved your reaction to the last note :D that made my night.
FRED CURCI !!! IS THE NAME OF THE LEAD VOCALIST OF "SHERIFF" ROCK BAND!!! Back in the day, chicks went crazy over this dude!
Greetings Jay and Amber
Welcome to the music stylings of Sheriff.
Freddie Curci, the lead singer, went on to front a band called Alias. Excellent band that did well with their first album in 1990. The huge hit from it was 'More than Words Can Say'. Check it out.
Good one. I haven't heard this in forever.
A doctor for sure, especially when it's about the eyes. Yes!
Oh my gosh! This song was huge in Canada in the 80’s. Takes me back to high school days. Great song!❤
Another overlooked power ballad from around the same time to check out is Giuffria “call to the heart” and Alias “ more than words can say” . Alias is the same singer as Sherriff.
The lead singer is rhe same guy who joined the group Alias and had a #1 hit I Need You Now in the early 90's.
On 4 February 1989, Canadian band Sheriff climbed to No.1 on the US Billboard 100 with the soft-rock ballad “When I’m with You”, which features a note timed at 19.3 seconds. Lead singer Federico “Freddy” Curci performed the soaring vocal - starting at 3 minutes 26 seconds - on the recording.
This band and Night Ranger are the pinnacle of 80's power ballad bands.
