Power Ballads in the 80's we're like a genre unto themselves. Nothing like it and I can't really say that there's been anything since that compares
80's girl here and I completely agree!! Power Ballads were the greatest!!
I totally agree with you. We middle aged folks had the most variety of music if any generation.

Having a "Top 40 hit" was essential in the 80s for these bands to get their albums made, and the power ballad was how a hard-rocking band could be assured to get their music played on pop and adult contemporary stations. Eventually it led to bands who were only known for their power ballads (Extreme is a great example; "More Than Words" was the only song of theirs that even got noticed, but the rest of their album was way more metal than most hair bands and got almost no airplay even on rock stations. When they broke up, their lead singer became the third lead singer for Van Halen)
Bands would release a hard rock song first, then a power ballad, and then a rocker
This type of song is called a “power ballad”. When hard rock/heavy metal/hair bands want a softer song
Ha, yup. The formula back then for the “hair bands” was to release a rock song as the first single and then a power ballad for the second.
I was going to say the same thing. the 80s were full of rock bands and power ballads. In some cases they kind of killed a bands momentum but now and then they were really good.

I absolutely LOVE seeing people discover bands like Skid Row and fall in love with power ballads. Music isn't made like this anymore... the vocals, the instrumentals... this stuff makes my heart happy.

As a tween I was into NKOTB, that is until I heard this song and totally fell in crush with Sebastian Bach (and Bret Michaels from Poison; Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue; and I could go on).

Sebastian Bach definitely has one of the most gorgeous voices in rock music….he has the most beautiful scream ever and he was so darn pretty!!! Hairband power ballads have the best love songs!!!!!

Probably the prettiest pretty boy, and he damn sure had an AMAZING, one of a kind voice.
He could sing with the best of them ... but he drove his bandmates up the bloody wall! Skid Row went to Moscow for a music festival that included Bon Jovi, Ozzy, the Scorpions (among others) and they all flew over in the same plane. Sebastian drove everyone nuts. He has no 'off' switch ... he is permanently dialed up to 11. Even Ozzy had enough. At one point he turned to Sebastian and asked "Do you EVER f***ING shut up!".

Skid Row doesn’t get enough recognition. Sebastian is SO talented.
Skid Row suffered from coming out later in the “Hair Band” era. They were an incredible band that fizzled away when grunge and Nirvana hit the scene. I like that people are now seeing how great this band really was.
They actually broke up over the drama at least that is why according to one side of it,
BC the band had a problems with leader singer Bach..
So its became about band drama and antics with Sebastian Bach not BC they fizzled so to speak.
Personally I wasn't there so I'm not taking either side.. But its not at all shocking..
Guessing it was those BIG Egos that really destroyed this awesome band.

Its very sad really..its such a shame.. its usually bands like this that have so much passion that they bring out the music thats the best in one another..its timeless.

"Nobody's Fool", "Coming Home", "Gypsy Road", and "Shake Me" are other good choices .. Jeff LaBar just passed away a couple weeks back..and still pretty young at 58

Skid Row is very much a hair metal band. But Sebastian really does have one of the best vocals of the genre.
Unfortunately Cinderella's guitarist, Jeff LaBar, just passed away this year. Cinderella was a fantastic band.
Sebastian Bach is one of the greatest singers of his generation. His talent as a front man and his incomparable voice got him to perform on Broadway in the title role in Jekyll & Hyde and in The Rocky Horror Show. Now in his 50s, he still has a great voice. I think Amber would also enjoy Quicksand Jesus. Oh... and did I mention he his also Canadian? 😉

'I Remember You' is one of just a handful of technically PERFECT songs in existence.
Sebastian Bach is hands down one of the greatest hard rock singers of all time. Can give it to you anyway you want, hard rock, ballad, doesn’t matter. Perfection.

5:23 The end of the guitar solo, as the 12-string acoustic comes back in and the way Bach vocally harmonizes with the electric guitar as it gives way to the acoustic is my favorite part of this song.
These guys had majestic hair, but I do not consider them a hair band. They were just a great hard rock band.
Skid Row is one of the most underrated bands. “Wasted Time” and “Quicksand Jesus” are a must when listening to Skid Row. Bach’s vocals are stronger in these songs 💓💓

Sebastian used to live about 5 miles or so from where I live. He was a hard partying guy and more than once he'd been thrown out of the local bar in his town. Now he's a rather big guy at around 6'5" or 6'6" so that must have been a sight. If you're looking for another Power Ballad from this time period I'd suggest "Love Song" from Tesla.

That last bit of vocal is so great. Goose bumps, no matter how many times I hear it. Really kind of gives a voice to that character in the video. The pain he must be in losing his girl.
you gotta hear Wasted Time, his vocals are EXCELLENT in that one, not that they aren't excellent in every song lol.. Monkey Business is great too, but it's more of their rock side
Wait until you hear Wasted Time. It's about his friends drug addiction Steven Adler which was the drummer for Guns and Roses. They kicked him out of the band because the addiction was that bad. The vocals really show how much the singer loved his friend.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard this song in my almost-40 years and that high, powerful “I love you” gives me chills every time. Brilliant.

Yes, not many could hold a candle to Sebastian Bach in his prime. This track was off their first album, and their second was definitely harder overall. For me, Sebastian's vocal range and power were more impressive on the second album. Check out Wasted Time, Quicksand Jesus, and In a Darkened Room in particular. You won't be disappointed!

I graduated high school in 1990 and I absolutely loved this song. I thought Sebastian Bach was the most beautiful man I had every seen and he also had great hair😂When I heard him sing I would get so emotional that I would get tears in my eyes. What a dork I was! I still think he was beautiful! He had such a unique voice. The talent!!

His voice is/was one of the best. Only people that I know of to ousting him in range was the late Freddy Mercury and Mariah Carey. Only they had a greater octave range than Sebastian Bach.
He is a melodic and powerful scream singer witch is a rare skill.

Most rock bands from the 80’s were referred to as “hair bands”, obviously because of all the long hair. Just about every one of them put out at least one love ballad.

Ah, Sebbie Bach: prettier than most women, total bad-ass, absolutely amazing voice. I’ve been in love with him since I was about 7 years old. For another band that had a pretty frontman and were pretty good rockers, try Poison next, Brett Michaels is almost as pretty as Sebastian Bach but they could sure rock out. A lot of great songs there, including Unskinny Bop, Valley of Lost Souls, and of course everybody's requisite ballad, in this case Every Rose Has Its Thorn, and Something To Believe In, one about Vietnam veterans among other things.
*Almost* as pretty, but damn, that’s some serious competition.

Every year, on our anniversary, my husband requests this song with a shoutout to me. After 31 yrs together it’s still our song… just like the song says “We’ve had our share of hard times. Wasted Time is their most epic ballad. His voice is incredible in that tune. But yeah Rob lots of heavy grinding hair metal tunes with Skid Row. Keep digging.

He's got beautiful hair and a gorgeous voice. A friend of mine knows him for many years. He's done Broadway and was on the Gilmore Girls. The guitarist in this band was the original guitarist for Bon Jovi. So Bon Jovi helped them after they made it first.

I live in Santa Monica California (LA County) Skid Row is a heartbreaking 💔 place and what makes it worse is a mile down the road are mansions! If you listen to Poison do a song called Give Me Something To Believe In Brett Michaels points out this very fact! I’m encouraged by seeing some celebrities feeding the homeless there! I remember working Thanksgiving and Christmas there shoulder to shoulder with some of the cast of Days of Our Lives! I worked beside Deidre Hall (Dr. Marlena Evans) and her twin sister Andrea Hall (Hattie Adams, Samantha Evans). God Bless the people who make their mark helping people on Skid Row!
Steelheart - I’ll never let you go, is probably one of the best vocal performances in the Power Ballad genre
If it's unbelievable vocals you want, Steelhearts 'I'll never let you go' cannot be topped! Absolute jaw dropping vocals like you've never heard. Be warned! Outstanding!

A good cover is by Moriah Formica. She was on the Voice a few years ago. She and her band, Plush is awesome. Think along the lines of a young Ann Wilson. I believe they are supposed to open for both Halestorm and Pretty Reckless pretty soon .

1986 they started...I was the first person to have this cassette on my Walkman at my high school in 88' my senior year. ...Sebastián Bach is the lead singer and EVERY girl was absolutely head over heels for him after MTV revealed them with Youth Gone Wild!!
From about 84 to 90 there were hard rock bands who could rock out but do a power ballad as well. If there's a ton of hair...these were the hair band sub genre. If Amber watched Gilmore girls, the singer also played in a band in their supposedly.

Skid Row was my Brother's favorite band back in the 80s. He's passed away now but every time I hear this song I think of him and the great times we all had growing up in the 70s and 80s
Miljenko Matijevic is the GOAT of power ballads singers when it comes to vocal prowess. Anybody who says different has never listened to Steelheart's song I'll never let you go(Angel Eyes). Which I think y'all need to react to if you liked this song.
Please, please, please play a little Jeff Healey. He is an amazing, underrated singer. A few great songs are See the Light, Angel Eyes, As the years go passing by. Not only did he lose his sight at a very young age, he died of cancer in his early 40's. I can just imagine the music he would have come out with if he had lived.

You guys nailed it when you were talking about Sebastian Bach's voice. Able to be soft and yet powerful, so clear and melodious. He definitely has one of the most unique voices in the genre.
