Billy plays rhythm guitar and overdubbed the slide guitar on this song. If you check out ZZ Top live in concert from Germany 1980 on YT you'll see him playing rhythm and slide-fills at the same time on this song. It's peak Billy. The tone is KILLER.

The "hang out with them" vibe speaks to a big piece of ZZ Top's appeal: swagger. This Texas blues trio oozes swagger and cool. "Cheap Sunglasses" "Sharp Dressed Man" "Legs"--so many to choose from. All with that filthy guitar tone and irresistible groove.

You are absolutely correct that bikers do like ZZ Top. When I was 15 I was at a Long Lake Resort for the 4th of July with my best friends family. We weren't sure what was happening at first, but all day on the 3rd Hells Angels we coming in all day long and taking all the cabins and camp sites. We were in a permanent cabin for her family. Then as we were told to stay away, we didn't and we found out ZZ Top and The Little River Band were going to play on the beach on the 4th. They were apparently just practicing for a tour. The tavern had a polka band for the old folks. At the time drinking age in Minnesota was 18 and my friend and I were able to get stamped and paid $5 all the beer we wanted. The music was amazing, such a fun time. But there were ssoooo many bikers there. Scary and fun at the same time.

When we lived in Houston me and my husband were walking in the Galleria Mall and a young girl came up to him and asked if he was Dusty Hill. At the time he didn't know who Dusty Hill was, but I did. It was a moment I'll never forget, and sadly my ex passed away just a few months ago.

Very sorry to read that last part. Great story though. It struck me because I also had a ZZ Top story at the Houston galleria. I was sitting with my dad somewhere in the food court area about 10 yrs ago, and we noticed a very long bearded, ZZ Top looking fella pushing a stroller, and carrying way too many shopping bags with a couple women trailing behind. I assumed it was his wife and daughter, but wasn’t sure. As he got closer it was obviously Billy Gibbons. He had the leather jacket, sunglasses, and that same fuzzy skull cap he has been wearing for it seems like 20 years now. We thought it was funny they were making him do all the work.

Its a studio album. they over-dub. Gibbons lays down a rhythm track, and then over-dubs the slide part on top, on another track - then they are mixed in production. This is imo, ZZ Top's tour de force cut of all time. It was such a ground-breaking recording, in its time. Hendrix was a huge fan of Gibbons' playing. They opened for the the Stones in Hawaii before anyone knew who they were, they came out on the stage in their Hats & boots & and all the hippies were like waaaa ? Then they burnt the joint down. :) Masters of syncopation, always with a great drive, innovative, soulful, never boring.

ZZ TOP couldn't get a gig outside of Texas in the early years. They finally got a spot in a Blues show at The Overton Park shell in Memphis Tn. They were the last bands to play and came on around midnite. Instant hit .. Memphis Ardent studio recorded the first 2-3 Albums. You could sometimes catch Billy Gibbons eating at Molly Gonzalez and he would gladly have a beer with you.

Thanks for the nice story !
I experienced something weird when I went to see them live : it was in Paris in the 90s and what put me off was that the first 3 songs were quite obviously lacking precision and far too much distorted and loud messy noise... after that eveverything went back in place and with all sonic details... like magic... ( the man at the desk got the information?) Anyway what a show it was !

It's layered.. The guitar is.. It's called Overdubbing.. You record, play back, and then record over that part.. You can do that as many times as you like, and you can record on the left, the right and the center at different takes to make a single mix. That's what you're hearing here.. Sorry, had to explain that. I'm a guitarists and have been for 45 years plus.

Hey guys, 1st time seeing one of your reactions. I wondered for many years how Billy Gibbons did those guitar parts, and found out a little while back that he does what is known as hybrid picking where you your plucking a lower string with a pick and then plucking higher strings with your finger tips. But NOBODY does it like Billy! Check this out, Billy and Dusty have always sported the beards, but the drummer Frank BEARD doesn’t have one! You can’t make this stuff up! Later guys. 🎸 😎
