The actors playing the soldiers were not given the script for this part and were told to play it straight as it was a serious part of the movie. The director wanted them (the soldiers) to hold back their laughter in the exact manner they did. It was a genius move that paid off in spades. It was wonderful to hear you guys laughing at this joke all these years later.

It seems that often the funniest stuff is the ad-lib, unscripted lines that comedians or actors just think up almost instantaneously. That Carol Burnett skit with Vicki Lawrence where Tim Conway was describing the plight of the conjoined circus elephants joined at the trunk is legendary. I was watching the original broadcast of the show with my parents and I was laughing so hard that I peed in my pants. I still didn’t get up and go to the bathroom until the skit was over. 😉

This movie almost never came to be. They just couldn't find the funding to go forward. Then one of the troupe showed a copy of the screenplay to George Harrison of the Beatles. As soon as he read it, he gave the boys $1 MIL to make the film. When asked why, he said he just had to see it on the big screen. Churches and clergy around the world protested the release of this film to no avail. A piece of comedy gold that almost never came to be.

They actually got that much funding for Life of Brian? I remember, that they did Monty Python and the Holy Grail for only £20,000. So little money they had only a few days in Scotland to film it and, among other things, couldnt afford horses, hence they came up with the ingenious "riding", that becmae a running gag of the movie.

Monty Python is very typical British humour, and John Cleese (The main centurion) was also in Fawlty Towers which is well worth watching and reacting to a few episodes.
However I would like to remind you that if you talk over the dialogue then you will miss the point of some humour, as it all depends on individual words very often, and unless you listen to every word (You also need to understand the words they are using, as it is not always everyday British English and some obscure words and synonyms are used to make the joke) you might not realise exactly why it's funny.
If you miss any details I'm sure people will help you in the comments section, so please try to watch some more.

In some ways I like him better in Fawlty Towers. It costars his actual wife. The Germans episode and the episode where he has a special dinner night are among the funniest things ever.Classic Cleese.
I also recommend Michael Palins travel shows. Not comedy but I just love Palin.

Much of the comedic genius of Monty Python arose from making fun of their origins. From both genetic and cultural perspective, many British do not/cannot roll their R's or L's and this was leveraged to great ironic effect here within the aristocracy of the Roman empire. Mel Brooks did a great job of poking fun at American norms in the same manner.

One funny part of this scene, not shown in this video, are the male actors who were playing women but who had to pretend to be male to get into the crowd.
