The actors playing the soldiers were not given the script for this part and were told to play it straight as it was a serious part of the movie. The director wanted them (the soldiers) to hold back their laughter in the exact manner they did. It was a genius move that paid off in spades. It was wonderful to hear you guys laughing at this joke all these years later.
Thats what I thought too until I saw a Interview with the monty python crew including John Cleese saying that it was completely scripted, it makes the acting even better.
It seems that often the funniest stuff is the ad-lib, unscripted lines that comedians or actors just think up almost instantaneously. I was watching the original broadcast of the show with my parents and I was laughing so hard that I peed in my pants. I still didn’t get up and go to the bathroom until the skit was over. 😉

This movie almost never came to be. They just couldn't find the funding to go forward. Then one of the troupe showed a copy of the screenplay to George Harrison of the Beatles. As soon as he read it, he gave the boys $1 MIL to make the film. When asked why, he said he just had to see it on the big screen. Churches and clergy around the world protested the release of this film to no avail. A piece of comedy gold that almost never came to be.
They actually got that much funding for Life of Brian? I remember, that they did Monty Python and the Holy Grail for only £20,000. So little money they had only a few days in Scotland to film it and, among other things, couldnt afford horses, hence they came up with the ingenious "riding", that becmae a running gag of the movie. Those guys were able to make their hilarious best out of anything!

Monty Python is what you might call “schoolboy humour”. It’s incredibly silly, incredibly British and incredibly harmless. No one is above being insulted 😂😂😂
With Monty Python there were often subtler meanings hidden in the schoolboy stuff. For example, there is the parallel between this scene and the biblical account of the Jerusalem crowd who called for the release of Barabbas, rather than Jesus.
@@stevewest4994 I didn’t know that about that particular scene, but I’m aware that there were often deeper meanings - I was just referring to the style of the comedy. Surely, the whole point of Life of Brian is to satirise the absurdity of religion and of human behaviour in general, but especially in the name of religion.

But, his plan is ruined when Bigus Dickus, whose lisp prevents him from saying S names properly, grabs the list. And I love the look of shock on the centurion's face ;)
