The video is essentially Cinderella: ZZ Top are the kid's fairy godfathers who made sure he was appropriately dressed and sent him to the ball in their hotrod.
ZZ Top’s music fits into a special category of music, Blues Rock, which creates a vibe that doesn’t necessarily even need vocals. Anyone who loves the genre gets it.
I played bass in a five piece band for 30 years. We covered several ZZ Top songs. We got some beards from a costume store and started wearing them and doing their moves when we played a ZZ Top. Just something that simple increased our audience greatly 👌
Some ZZ trivia. They were in Back to the Future...#3 I think. When they went back to the old west. Also, Billy had a reoccurring role in the TV series Bones. He played Angela's father, and played himself, which was cool. The first time Angela introduced her father on the show, her coworkers were like "Your dad is Billy Gibbons!!" Many good episodes with him.
I don't remember if they were actually in it, but Bill & Ted's Volume 2, does a great tip of the hat to ZZ when they go off to learn to play guitar and come back looking like Billy and Dusty.
All this talk of Black Velvet. You really need to check out and do an analysis of Alannah Myles singing Black Velvet. I'm sure you'll be impressed by her vocals.
Oh, she did much better work than that cheese. It's the one song on the album that I skip. "Lover of Mine" is a superior performance, IMO. "Hurry Make Love" is another standout. Her voice and presentation always make me think of Bryan Adams, especially when she's driving hard.
What I love about your channel is watching you, as a “younger” person really getting into the “old” music from my generation. I really loved the music from the late 60s through the late 70s. I’ve seen many of reviews of music from that era and really love your excitement and expressions. Keep it up girl!
Such a fun song! This rock band was formed in 1969. They were popular for their live performances, sly humorous lyrics, the matching appearances of Billy Gibbons & Dusty Hill, who wore sunglasses, hats & long beards. Sadly Dusty Hill passed away in 2021. Also, that red hot car called "The Eliminator" is in almost every video of theirs, which I've always loved how they appear and disappear in their videos. They're not usually the main people in their videos.
This song was an instant hit as were most of the songs on Eliminator. This is/was one of the most amazing groups, so much sound from 2 guitars and drums!
I’ve enjoyed your work, am compelled to comment for the first time. I’ve never seen the video, but have heard the song a thousand times, in dark, smoky rooms, barrooms, in cars traveling at triple digit speeds, and at various levels of intoxication or inebriation. My wife and kids are out, so I get to watch at high volume, and today is the first time I ever heard it sober, laughing so hard tears are running down my face. Thanks for all you do, and happy new year wishes to you and yours. Keep at it!
Saw them on the Eliminator tour in Austin. Joan Jett opened for them. I was a junior in high school, my buddy and I drive 2 hours to go to the concert, it was a Thursday and we both were on the football team. If we didn’t show for school the next morning we wouldn’t be able to play. That was a painful Friday night under the lights.
Billy Gibbons just had that car, called "The Eliminator", built and taken possession of the keys, when someone suggested they should use it in the video for this song. Gibbons agreed and The Eliminator instantly became iconic and for a long time Gibbons couldn't drive it, because it was always being used in ZZ Top photo-sessions or video-recordings. Other famous cars of Gibbons are Cadzilla and the Slampala.
Seen the cadzilla at the rod run in pigeon forge tenn . It is a amazing car tons of custom work that is truly well done a lot of cars in magazines are not nearly as nice in person but the fit and finish was ton quality and everything worked really well.
ZZ Top is a blast live. Saw them in Sandpoint, Idaho years ago with the original cast. Frank Beard is one of my favorite drummers of all time. Frank's technique and timing are flawless, and his riffing tasty and tasteful. Love their music through and through. Billy Gibbons is an amazing guitarist, solos are tasty and tasteful. They put on a great show!!
Not many drummers in 3 piece bands are as efficient as Frank. Just does what needs to be done. Not fancy...not flashy...no fifteen minutes solos or drum kits that take 3 semis to move around. Just efficient. That's what I like about Frank.
Elizabeth! You are the most real coolest person in the world! Love every reaction you do. You know music and put into perspective. You and daily Doug are the best reaction channels! Happy New Year! Looking forward to another year of great videos from you!
I love ZZtop! This song came out when I was just learning to play guitar in the 80’s. I took the cassette tape to my guitar lessons and had my teacher help me learn this song. Ended up being the first song my first band played at our first gig. 😎🎸
This song and especially the video is iconic. I saw them with the Pretenders and the Stray Cats and bought the ZZ silver key chain at their merch stand.
You nailed it, Elizabeth. ZZ Top music (especially from their 80's catalog) is just fun, feel good music. To me they're a lot like the Beach Boys in that no matter what mood you're in, hearing one of their songs will always cheer you up!
It's so much fun watching the joyful expression on your face when you're listening 😊 Welcome to the Gen X universe ❤ We got to experience this randomly driving in the car, while listening to AM radio. You should check out The Guess Who... Clap For The Wolfman. Not only can you explore Burton Cummings unique vocals, but you will lose your mind when everyone's favorite DJ Wolfman Jack comes into the song. Time machine travels... gotta love it!

That being said I have one for you. Alright- Pilot speed, live version. Keep doing what your doing and we'll keep watching.
Looking forward to this one! It's one of my 4yr old daughter's favourite songs, she recognises it as soon as it starts and often requests it in the car! She tells me to pretend her toy bunny is wearing a "sharp dress" while he dances to the song 😂
As a Scotsman and a rocker, my kilt with a t-shirt, combat boots and biker jacket is one of my favourite looks. :) Happy Hogmanay, lang may yer lum reek!
Fun,fun fun with ZZ Top. I can't hear this music and not break out in a smile. Thank you so much for a really entertaining analysis. Happy New Year's to all!!!
The way I've heard the story ZZ Top were on the same 'Old Grey Whistle Test' show as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and really liked the way they used synths. Andy McCluskey (lead singer with OMD) didn't appreciate ZZ Top at all but heard Billy Gibbons say many years later that it was that show which inspired the band to experiment with more modern sounds. I think I've heard Billy talk about Depeche Mode as well, and I doubt it was just one band which drove ZZ Top into their 80s commercial era, but whatever they did extraordinarily well out of it.
So glad you took a shot at them in their prime. It was really tough seeing your first impression be a more recent live video - sadly on a long enough timeline none of us escape showing our age, including our voices.
"Beer Drinkers and Hellraisers" used to be my vibe when I was younger, but these days a game night like yours sounds more appealing! Happy New Year everyone.
Remember a story about Mark Knopfler supposedly got in touch with BG because he wanted to know how he got that sound so he could use it for Money for Nothing. Guess BG wouldn't tell him, or not exactly how, so he came up with his own tone for Money for Nothing. Not sure if any of that is true.
I saw ZZ play The Canteen in San Antonio around 1974 or 1975. I was instantly in love with their sound. I listen to them today and I'm almost 67 years young.
The stories ZZ Top tells in their music videos are always a lot of fun. Often the 3 Fairy Groovefathers and their lovely assistants, doing what they do best to help out a young man or woman.
My dad always used to say that when he grew up he wanted to be the guy that went “haw haw haw” for ZZ Top 😄 I think they make the best songs for driving your car.
Saw ZZ Top twice, great concerts. Especially when you buzzed and not quite stoned and they drop into a groove and jam for a while. Ahh the '70s and '80s music.
Frank Beard the drummer is the only member of the band that doesn't actually have a beard 😅 The songs TV Dinner Jesus Left Chicago and Pearl Necklace are stone cold ZZ TOP classics Thx for the vid Liz ✌️🖤🤘
I wonder what E would think of Blue Jean Blues, i bet she'd love it. I highly recommend The Warning- Dust To Dust/Dull Knives live at The Pepsi Center. It's an excellent display of what a true live performance should be. Pau on lead vocals the first half and Dany the second all the while Ale filling in the harmonies and impressive bass lines all throughout.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for your work. I am so lucky to have actually been to so many live performances of artists you have reviewed. After a show in Joplin, Missouri my daughter and I met ZZ Top backstage.

I'm 54 taking care of my 89 year old Pops. So a wild time will not be had for me tonight. But i got football, my dad's company for as long as i can still have it, and a beer or two. Oh yeah...every song they have is great, Including TV Dinners if i recall is the track name.....
Eliminator and afterburner were awesome albums. I liked the song My Heads in Mississippi, but I felt Recycler as an album wasn't that great.
And Pearl Necklace
ZZ Top’s music fits into a special category of music, Blues Rock, which creates a vibe that doesn’t necessarily even need vocals. Anyone who loves the genre gets it.
I played bass in a five piece band for 30 years. We covered several ZZ Top songs. We got some beards from a costume store and started wearing them and doing their moves when we played a ZZ Top. Just something that simple increased our audience greatly 👌
The man was a body double for Kevin Bacon in Footloose and did a really cheesy cologne commercial in the mid 80s. I have no idea why I know this. lol
Watching Hodgins with Billy was hysterical. The way Jack was so scared of him, but yet so desperate for his approval was entertaining.
All this talk of Black Velvet. You really need to check out and do an analysis of Alannah Myles singing Black Velvet. I'm sure you'll be impressed by her vocals.
Yes, Yes, Yes
Oh, she did much better work than that cheese. It's the one song on the album that I skip. "Lover of Mine" is a superior performance, IMO. "Hurry Make Love" is another standout.
Her voice and presentation always make me think of Bryan Adams, especially when she's driving hard.
Ohhh yes. Good idea
@@randoneur Agreed! The song has been done by a few singers, but Alannah Myles certainly did it best!
Came here to day this. You NEED to cover this phenomenal song
What I love about your channel is watching you, as a “younger” person really getting into the “old” music from my generation. I really loved the music from the late 60s through the late 70s. I’ve seen many of reviews of music from that era and really love your excitement and expressions. Keep it up girl!
I saw ZZ Top about 30 years ago at the Milton Keynes Bowl in the UK and to this day it is still the best live show I've seen.
Well, for *_Eliminator,_* it was mostly the sound of one guitar, a bass synth, and a drum machine.
Happy New Year, Elizabeth! I'm so looking forward to another year of your incredible analysis and your beautiful persona!
You are so nerdy and we love it!!! Have a great New Year and thank you for everything you do!!!
Not just driving music, speeding ticket music!! ❤️🎶
This song and especially the video is iconic. I saw them with the Pretenders and the Stray Cats and bought the ZZ silver key chain at their merch stand.
Now THERE is a lineup that could happen only in the 80s!
@ Right?! 😂
More Rock? Great!!! ZZ Top? Brilliant!!! Happy new year, Elizabeth and the rest of the family. Keep up the good work.
You nailed it, Elizabeth. ZZ Top music (especially from their 80's catalog) is just fun, feel good music. To me they're a lot like the Beach Boys in that no matter what mood you're in, hearing one of their songs will always cheer you up!
This is the high point of my evening. Thank you and Happy New Year Elizabeth! 😊
I was 8 years old the first time I heard ZZ top.. right then and there i knew this was my kind of music.. these dudes are legends in texas
Legends, but not just in Texas.
Great song. Just a classic combo of Texas blues and rock.👍😊
It's so much fun watching the joyful expression on your face when you're listening 😊
Welcome to the Gen X universe ❤
We got to experience this randomly driving in the car, while listening to AM radio.
You should check out The Guess Who... Clap For The Wolfman. Not only can you explore Burton Cummings unique vocals, but you will lose your mind when everyone's favorite DJ Wolfman Jack comes into the song. Time machine travels... gotta love it!
Growing up in Texas in the 1980s, this song and ZZ Top in general was the heartbeat of the times.
Love your channel Elizabeth. Your musical and vocal knowledge is second to none. Its been a joy watching you dive into different genres. The excitement you have for music is addicting.
That's awesome!! Keep the young rockin'!! ❤❤❤
Happy New Year, Elizabeth. Thanks for the joy x
As a Scotsman and a rocker, my kilt with a t-shirt, combat boots and biker jacket is one of my favourite looks. :) Happy Hogmanay, lang may yer lum reek!
What does your husband wear?
@@basher5107😂😂😂😂
Smile, sass and confidence pretty much sums up ZZ Top.
8:33 "... you want it to have a little more spit and slobber in there..." i have waited years for her to say this and didn't even know it! 😅😅😅
Man, I am sure that was an accident, but I am surprised with her mind that she didn't catch that after the fact and giggle at it.
@@Bancheis Especially from a beautiful woman who is as geeky as any of us could hope for. Makes me want to recite Klingon Poetry
Fun,fun fun with ZZ Top. I can't hear this music and not break out in a smile. Thank you so much for a really entertaining analysis. Happy New Year's to all!!!
Billy G was a big Depeche Mode fan. ZZ Top embraced the instruments and production of the 80's and it paid off. Electronic rythm meets electric blues.
I have a recording of Billy being a dj for a couple hours and of the songs he played was "Turning Japanese". I don't remember the artist.
@@jasonfutrell8560 English post-punk band 'The Vapors'.
Having ZZ Top as your wing man would have been pretty darn cool!!
Billy: Hey let's do some tracks for chicks to dance to
Frank: I've been saying that for years
Dusty: I've been for years!
So glad you took a shot at them in their prime. It was really tough seeing your first impression be a more recent live video - sadly on a long enough timeline none of us escape showing our age, including our voices.
just three friends jamming out. they sound loud, just like any big band. ZZ Top is my favorite rock band of all time.
If there is one overall characteristic to describe the music of ZZTop it’s “Groove”. They just groove so well.
"Beer Drinkers and Hellraisers" used to be my vibe when I was younger, but these days a game night like yours sounds more appealing!
Happy New Year everyone.
BG's guitar tone blew us all away, best guitar sound since EVH. He sorta explained how he did it in interviews but was sly and coy.
It's a Legend guitar amp. :)
“Best guitar sound since EVH”? - LOL, Billy predates Eddie by almost two decades. Billy played in a band with Jimi Hendrix for heaven’s sake.
@@brettsiegel6934 *laughs in Eric Johnson*
I saw ZZ play The Canteen in San Antonio around 1974 or 1975. I was instantly in love with their sound. I listen to them today and I'm almost 67 years young.
My goodness, thank you for being such a delightful and grateful need for me. I love your insights and inspirations.
ZZ Top Blue Jean Blues
🥰 I am! Australia's New Year, is 12 hours Before USA!
😉😁 and I'm watching "Elizabeth" 👍
the tailend of that riff with that tone is godly
Sadly I'm down with a cold this New Years' Eve, but Elizabeth's joyousness is so infectious I'm enjoying life nonetheless!
The stories ZZ Top tells in their music videos are always a lot of fun. Often the 3 Fairy Groovefathers and their lovely assistants, doing what they do best to help out a young man or woman.
One of my favorite songs of all time. I plan on partying sober with my awesome peeps at Celebrate Recovery.
Awesome! My buddy hosts our local Celebrate recovery.
Congratulations on your recovery! Much respect to everyone managing those demons...
Black velvet PJ pants ..mocktails ... belly pants ...😂 lotsa fun this reaction ... Happy 2025
My dad always used to say that when he grew up he wanted to be the guy that went “haw haw haw” for ZZ Top 😄
I think they make the best songs for driving your car.
Yeah...great road music...if you're looking for another 15 over ticket 😂😂
Saw ZZ Top twice, great concerts. Especially when you buzzed and not quite stoned and they drop into a groove and jam for a while. Ahh the '70s and '80s music.
I have seen them about 5 times and they are always great . The loudest band I’ve heard too. One of my favorite bands
Frank Beard the drummer is the only member of the band that doesn't actually have a beard 😅 The songs TV Dinner Jesus Left Chicago and Pearl Necklace are stone cold ZZ TOP classics Thx for the vid Liz ✌️🖤🤘
The video for TV Dinners is a riot. Loved that ZZ Top took the MTV era in stride and had fun with the videos.
Been a fan since the Tres Hombres days.
They’re just a FUN band. Plain and simple.
Blue jean blues is a great recommendation representing a great era for the band.
UA-cam is not complete until we get a reactanalysis by E of Pau on lead!!! ⚡🤘😛🤘⚡
Thank you, Elizabeth, for your work. I am so lucky to have actually been to so many live performances of artists you have reviewed. After a show in Joplin, Missouri my daughter and I met ZZ Top backstage.
I agree about the effortlessness of the music. That lazy groove is just so catchy. On the rock music stress spectrum, this music is very relaxing!
The Eliminator album is quite possibly the GOAT it’s a banger all the way through👍🔥
My best friend is good friends with Billy.
I'll have him pass this video to Billy. I'm sure he will like it.
Playing M:tG on New Year's Eve? Those are priorities.👍
This is an awesome thing to do!
Playing Magic with friends forms the FOUNDATIONS of a good new year 🥴
I'm celebrating the end of my new years by late into the night as I've goten home watching this, eating instant ramen, and having a last (possibly) beer.
A lovely wind down.
This song and Legs were the 1st 2 ZZ Top songs I remember hearing and going "who is this?" Probably heard them before, but this sound is what made me dive deeper!
I'm 54 taking care of my 89 year old Pops. So a wild time will not be had for me tonight. But i got football, my dad's company for as long as i can still have it, and a beer or two. Not depressing, just necessary. If something happened to him while I'm out being dimb i couldn't take it! So all of you out there have a wild but safe wonderful time for me!!! CHEERS!!! 🍻🤟👏
You have a great evening with your old man. Sounds like you’ve got the right priorities for the perfect New Years.
I'm 45. Just chilled at home with my kids. It's not really safe out there these days. I live in Atlanta, GA. So the drunks and idiots were out for the peach drop, and of course, the celebratory gun shots. I hope you enjoyed your night, and time with your dad.
I have my 80 year old pops too, same thing, night at home.
@@clarisaexplainsitall79 I'm in Lilburn GA lol! I hear ya!!! 🍀
Billy very underrated for his guitar chops.
+1 here for Black Velvet by Alannah Myles (was mis-credited for a long time as being by Pat Benatar)
Mis-credited by who? I assume in an old Napster download or something? In my & her home country of Canada, Alannah Myles was all over Canadian radio & TV in the '90s. I don't remember anyone ever thinking she was someone else.
IIRC, there was another version of Black Velvet around the same time sung by Tanya Tucker.
@@rcschmidt668 The country artist that I remember covering "Black Velvet" was a lesser known singer, Robin Lee. It was super obvious and targeted as she even had a similar look as Alannah Myles.
Magic is awesome! Always happy to see other players out there! Have fun and a happy new year!
Thank you for reviewing the video and music. This song by ZZ Top never grows old.
