  • In transitional patterns, the brakes come before the gas.
Developing eccentric strength is helpful, but to use it at game-speed, it's important to include training strategies to improve eccentric rate of force development, which is simply the speed at which you generate force to slow down your body's momentum.
This is one exercise to help emphasize that quality, specific to the deeper hip and knee angles characteristic of most transitional patterns.
The goal here is to have the foot hit the ground in the bottom of the lunge, and then hit the brakes as fast as possible.
It's important when going through this exercise that you create some stiffness through the core/trunk before hitting the ground. This will help create a more stable pelvis and dampen some of the forces going up through the spine.
