Yea he's definitely one of the greats. Lots of good tips in this video for vocals in general, but I think Wayne used mostly false chords instead of true chords in pretty much everything he did. The "I see it, I need it" scream section is a great example of that, and that technique wasn't really talked about or used here. Melissa Cross had a great DVD about it years ago. Think it was called The Art of Screaming.
ONCE AGAIN, a vocalist I have loved forever, tried to mimic for years and years... Here comes Chris with healthy proper approaches that make it feel better and sound great. This man is a UA-cam gem. ❤️
Hands down Wayne Static is just one of the most, if not THE MOST underrated vocalists in the metal genre. To go from his scream/melodic scream(kinda like Anders from in flames), to his growl. It's just idk it's a breath of fresh air. And granted the replacement it's about as close to Wayne Static as we are gonna get which I'm happy with. But Wayne Static will just go down as one of the greats in my opinion. Miss you Wayne!
@@hughneutron5303 He's talking about the part at 10.09 Wayne did both the high and low parts for that part. You can see him do it in the live version of this song.
Wayne Static was such a phenomenal and unique vocalist, who brought a very fresh sound to nu metal, as well as helped to introduce a lot of people to industrial metal. It's always nice when I see people giving his name some attention.
The "I see it, I need it" part is so nuts. Chris says do it clean and hits Chris Cornell pitches, which I can no way do yet, and then says to add grit. That is hard and will have to come back to this video in 8 or 9 years lol.
haha... ya there's lots going on here and lots to think about for sure! But if you can isolate the different aspects of what he's doing, and even try doing some of these things with LOWERED pitches first, you'll be able to build up to it while practicing the other techniques. Don't let "can't hit the pitch" keep you from discovering some of the other aspects of his singing... (I say this as someone who used to do that)
It's amazing how you are able to unpack what different types of singers techniques, and demonstrate and teach how they do it in a healthy way for your own voice.
The main reason I like Wayne's vocals is simply because that even though he shouting, it doesn't sound like he's shouting. He's just singing. There is plenty of apparent note changes to make the melody, and it still comes across as clean. You can still hear clearly what the lyrics are. Practically everybody else can't get the same effect without making a muddy guttural sound, where it's just pure scream, and no notes, and feels like there's obvious strain on the vocal chords. Wayne's technique is above all else.
You're a goddamned wizard! Wow. I had no faith hearing your speaking voice then you blew my damn mind. Major props!!!! I didn't realize voice control like this was possible. Truly wonderful performance sir.
There's an interview with Ulrich Wilde where he says Wayne ate M&M's while tracking to help keep salivated. Either way this is cool. One of my favourite albums of all time.
Back in the day, whenever I tried to do something aggressive like that, I'd max out the pressure and basically scream 'till I passed out. When hearing great singers/screamers in isolation, you can hear they are way more relaxed and free.
This gentleman is literally giving away trade secrets. All jokes aside, I've been trying to distort my voice like this for decades. Since the late 90s. Could never pull it off and even UA-cam videos these days fail to easily explain how it's done. But wow. You actually morph your voice for us. I can tell that when I get home from work later and try this, it'll work. Dude. Thank you so much. If I still can't get it for some reason, I'm willing to pay for help with this. I have plenty of recordings of myself singing here on my UA-cam channel. Really can't wait to try this later!
this is simultaneously hilarious to watch listen to as it is to actually learn and make my roommate yell "DUDE ARE YOU OKAY??" my condolences to this mans nearest neighbor
The low notes of the chorus "YOU" are performed by Tony Campos, their bass player. He's also the singer of asesino. He uses false chord just fyi. What you described here is not quite that. But as always, another awesome video!
Man, you really just nail explaining the steps that need to be taken in order to produce these sounds (and more importantly WHY) in the simplest and most relatable terms possible. The vast majority of humans have the ability to speak, not a doctorate in laryngology.

God I love Static X even after 24 years. I just got to see them a few weeks ago and what a completely amazing set/performance was. I am lucky enough to have gotten the chance to see them before Wayne's passing and I know some don't care for Edsel Dope doing the vocals as Xer0, but he did a phenomenal job with filling the role for this tour. His vocals were almost fully replicated and it really shows that Edsel is putting all his energy and passion into making it right for the fans and the band. He isn't trying to be Wayne, but he is 100% just doing it for the love of it.
Ya, I totally agree. Some people are just unique. So, others can only be inspired by what they do because what they did was typically the first and best of it's kind. Anything else is inspired imitation.
