How do you go from distorted singing into a low growl? What about singing rhythmic, staccato gritted-up lines with lots of words?
In Static-X's Push It, Wayne demonstrates amazing aggressive agility. The studio performance fully captures the roundtable vocal approach of some of the band's finest live performances and we get to dive into the isolated vocals of this amazing track!
Join me as I dissect vocal lines that sound like two different vocalists had to have done them when in fact, Wayne is masterfully switching tonalities on the fly. We'll also discuss how he relied on his bandmates live to do certain call-and-answer lines (live). It's an interesting track to dissect!
You'll get to learn a bit about the studio production too! --Some juicy doubling and delay tricks. Enjoy!
You cannot NOT love Static X. What a underrated singer Wayne was, and what a great music they have put out.
Very unique sound especially the vocals
Yea he's definitely one of the greats. Lots of good tips in this video for vocals in general, but I think Wayne used mostly false chords instead of true chords in pretty much everything he did. The "I see it, I need it" scream section is a great example of that, and that technique wasn't really talked about or used here. Melissa Cross had a great DVD about it years ago. Think it was called The Art of Screaming.
my eminem fan friend was not impressed. unfortunately it is possible to not like staticx :/
ONCE AGAIN, a vocalist I have loved forever, tried to mimic for years and years... Here comes Chris with healthy proper approaches that make it feel better and sound great. This man is a UA-cam gem. ❤️
I'm glad we've got a video on him now!! He's deserved one for awhile!
@@chrisliepe absolutely!!!
Took the words right out of my mouth 👏 short story Chris is the fuckin GOAT
I was about to write something very similar. I'm glad too he did this video.
Hands down Wayne Static is just one of the most, if not THE MOST underrated vocalists in the metal genre. To go from his scream/melodic scream(kinda like Anders from in flames), to his growl. It's just idk it's a breath of fresh air. And granted the replacement it's about as close to Wayne Static as we are gonna get which I'm happy with. But Wayne Static will just go down as one of the greats in my opinion. Miss you Wayne!
sorry to burst your bubble but the growls are the bassist. wayne still had an ear splitting high though!
I'm pretty sure Tony Campos is providing the Yeah vocals.
Yeah pretty sure Tony does the low growling
He does
Yeah sure, in lives he provides at yeah vocals. I think him provides that also at recording.
Nah man that's Wayne the growl yeah is Campos
This dude is dumb hahahah I love it
Wayne Static was such a phenomenal and unique vocalist, who brought a very fresh sound to nu metal, as well as helped to introduce a lot of people to industrial metal. It's always nice when I see people giving his name some attention.
Such a great frontman with a unique instrument. Luckily I was able to see them live. RIP Wayne
Saw them as front band of korn
RIP Wayne. Such a good artist and fun person.
The "I see it, I need it" part is so nuts. Chris says do it clean and hits Chris Cornell pitches, which I can no way do yet, and then says to add grit. That is hard and will have to come back to this video in 8 or 9 years lol.
haha... ya there's lots going on here and lots to think about for sure! But if you can isolate the different aspects of what he's doing, and even try doing some of these things with LOWERED pitches first, you'll be able to build up to it while practicing the other techniques. Don't let "can't hit the pitch" keep you from discovering some of the other aspects of his singing... (I say this as someone who used to do that)
There's an interview with Ulrich Wilde where he says Wayne ate M&M's while tracking to help keep salivated. Either way this is cool. One of my favourite albums of all time.
That's funny I used to eat Twinkies for that.
@@doktorfellatio438 excellent excellent username
Mustaine was said to eat Fritos one one point!
@@beauvanbibberbvgration3770 might give that a go some time ;)
Orange juice also helps with the grunts
You're a goddamned wizard! Wow. I had no faith hearing your speaking voice then you blew my damn mind. Major props!!!! I didn't realize voice control like this was possible. Truly wonderful performance sir.
this is simultaneously hilarious to watch listen to as it is to actually learn and make my roommate yell "DUDE ARE YOU OKAY??"
my condolences to this mans nearest neighbor
The main reason I like Wayne's vocals is simply because that even though he shouting, it doesn't sound like he's shouting. He's just singing.
There is plenty of apparent note changes to make the melody, and it still comes across as clean. You can still hear clearly what the lyrics are. Practically everybody else can't get the same effect without making a muddy guttural sound, where it's just pure scream, and no notes, and feels like there's obvious strain on the vocal chords. Wayne's technique is above all else.
Wayne was great at that but Devin Townsend kicks everyone’s ass at it. Deadhead, live in Plovdiv. 👌🏼
It's amazing how you are able to unpack what different types of singers techniques, and demonstrate and teach how they do it in a healthy way for your own voice.
A super cut of this with nothing but the demonstrations would make a viral UA-cam short. DO IT, PUSH IT!!!
I wanna say this is the best vocal lesson I've ever seen
OH MY GOSH, IM SO GLAD THAT YOU DID THIS
I'M LITERALLY FREAKING OUT RN.
:)
@@chrisliepe :3
The low notes of the chorus "YOU" are performed by Tony Campos, their bass player. He's also the singer of asesino. He uses false chord just fyi. What you described here is not quite that. But as always, another awesome video!
Can confirm.
"It's fairly static.... Hehe" Yup, I smashed that like button right there.
Hehe
Back in the day, whenever I tried to do something aggressive like that, I'd max out the pressure and basically scream 'till I passed out. When hearing great singers/screamers in isolation, you can hear they are way more relaxed and free.
Glad I'm not the only one who has gave it a shot and ended up getting light headed and almost on my ass in the booth. lol
@@kbminnick Man! I remember getting tunnel vision at a specific part of a song live. Most if not every time! At least the energy factor was there.
Seeing Statix-X on Friday and this was really cool to see. I was in HS when Static-X came out so I'm an original fan! Glad to see them keeping the legacy alive after Wayne died.
Man, you really just nail explaining the steps that need to be taken in order to produce these sounds (and more importantly WHY) in the simplest and most relatable terms possible. The vast majority of humans have the ability to speak, not a doctorate in laryngology.
I love how the vocals on this track are such a rollercoaster, but when laid over the music, it goes together like pb&j.
I love Wayne's vocals his grit is some of the best in the business and Chris nails the breakdown as always
Thanks Alex!
This gentleman is literally giving away trade secrets. All jokes aside, I've been trying to distort my voice like this for decades. Since the late 90s. Could never pull it off and even UA-cam videos these days fail to easily explain how it's done.
But wow. You actually morph your voice for us. I can tell that when I get home from work later and try this, it'll work.
Dude. Thank you so much. If I still can't get it for some reason, I'm willing to pay for help with this. I have plenty of recordings of myself singing here on my UA-cam channel.
Really can't wait to try this later!
So glad my approach is resonating with you! :)
I’ve been wanting a Wayne Static analysis for so long! I love his style, RIP to a legend
Amazing, I've been searching for this lesson for years, thanks a lot!!
3:09-3:23 First time I watched this dude, he's fire, and funny fire too......
i was so amazed when i first heard edsel doing the vocals and damn he sounded so much like wayne
Edsel is so underrated
Really interesting breakdown of a super cool song! Thank you for your work on this video. It was much enjoyed!
The free vocal lessons and videos like these have helped me so much. I am saving up for the big vocal course. I know it will take me to the next level. Thank you so much Chris!!!!!!!!
You're so welcome Sam! Thanks for watching and I'm looking forward to working with you inside the course! It's always fun to help people who've been watching my videos for awhile!
Ook this is freaky 🤣
I was just wondering how to sing like him earlier today. I suspect there's a ton of compression involved. Thanks for reading my mind, Chris!
You're welcome Gabriela!
SAME, I tried singing this song just this past Saturday and the cadence was tricky for me. Chris has all our houses secretly mic'd up for song suggestions, but hey I'm here for it
thank god for you, chris. i've needed this video for soooo long 😭😭
thanks for doing this.. wayne and static x were an inspiration to me so seeing someone break down to even just waynes vocals means a lot from a fans point of view..
Wayne brings me back to NFSU times, great times, really sad that he is not with us anymore.
I love Waynes total performance, gimmicks behavior. It was just an amazing experience to discover Static-X did a lot of miles on their music grinding away on my fixie. Adrenaline to the max
Such a fine interpretation and analysis. Very nice. As a vocalist I appreciate you work on this. I'll check out more sir.
God I love Static X even after 24 years. I just got to see them a few weeks ago and what a completely amazing set/performance was. I am lucky enough to have gotten the chance to see them before Wayne's passing and I know some don't care for Edsel Dope doing the vocals as Xer0, but he did a phenomenal job with filling the role for this tour. His vocals were almost fully replicated and it really shows that Edsel is putting all his energy and passion into making it right for the fans and the band. He isn't trying to be Wayne, but he is 100% just doing it for the love of it.
yeah, it sounds spot on
Ya, I totally agree.
Some people are just unique. So, others can only be inspired by what they do because what they did was typically the first and best of it's kind. Anything else is inspired imitation.
Crazy to think with practice and someone like you one can learn to sing like Wayne? 😮
I love these production and isolated vocal deep dives so much. Great tune. Wayne was so great. Gone too soon.
I've always loved Wayne and Static X and their sound. I was skeptical when they announced continuing with Xero but I love what they are doing with him. What you're doing is awesome and real interesting I've never heard someone break it down like this. Keep it up this is super cool
Always thought Wayne's voice was uniquely awesome. Thank you for showong us juat how awesome it is
Thank you so much, Chris!!
I loved this video way more than I expected to. Thank you
Wanes' vocals are straight-up punchy without vibrato. They go from one place to another without wavering. That's pretty frigging metal.
Pirate without the emphasis! Got it!
In my opinion, he was one of the best Metal vocalists ever! Absolutely badass!
Freaking amazing. Mr. Liepe!
Hello from New England...Oh man this is soooo cool Chris I've always been into S-X since I saw them on OZZFEST 99...RIP WAYNE ANOTHER GREAT GONE WAAAY TO SOON...Peace from the Northeast...
You are super awesome! I really love how you break things down and explain how you view the human instrument. I bet you could explain relativity to a child and they would get it..
Loved this. Very informative video
Dude! Well done ❤
This is awesome! I have no idea how you stumbled onto my feed but I like it. Great work!
Glad you're enjoying, and thanks for watching!
THE VIDEO I´VE BEEN WAITING FOR YEARS
Been waiting for this one for a while now, good stuff :)
Hope you enjoyed it!
Another great artist and another great lesson.
Wayne unfortunately lost his battle over alcoholism but his art will forever be unique and creative.
just a heads up, I don't know if anyone mentioned it - Tony does the growls on the track and live
I can say anything on the quarter note! Thank you for this video
this is brilliant
Great breakdown!
Brilliant seeing these in depth videos
Glad you like them!
Brilliant.
Yes! Such a powerful performer! Speaking of the era, one of my all-time favorite vocalists is Hed (pe)'s singer
Jared Gomes. Check out the album "Broke"
I second Jahred Gomes... guys range is incredible ... from "No Turning Back", "Renegade" to " Bartender" & "Killing Time" etc.. top notch
Hed PE had some great tunes. I remember they had an instrumental called "octopussy" which I loooved. What was the name of That album? I owned it. "Suffa" is one of the later songs I loved. Very creative band
Finally, been asking for this for years
IT'S HERE
@@chrisliepe Yeah you're a legend. I always thought you'd enjoy doing it anyway cause Wayne sings so uniquely, it's everything you've taught in one track :)
Superb analysis as always, Wayne was amazing!
I want to see you do a vocal analysis of Justin Hawkins of The Darkness, his falsetto and style are quite unique, on super hits like "I believe in a thing called love" but also on songs like "Get your hands off my woman", "Open Fire" or so many others.
Thanks a lot for your work on youtube Chris, love your channel :)
You do a good job
I got to meet Wayne while I helped my brother film the Push It video in So Cal.Very cool guy very heavy vibe.
What a cool opportunity!!
only one wayne static, but with this analysis you can learn more about his techniques and how to perform them in a healthy way. inspiration not imitation - well said. i loved the video, thank you so much for the effort.
Great voice! You must try to sing "Anything but this". I love this song 🤘🏼
The vocals in that song are INSANE. Right next to Chroma-Matic imo
No way! I was just jamming to push it yesterday!
great teacher!!!
Wayne was a Metal God! I remember seeing SX at OzzFest, and he could keep that voice going for the entire show! He was a beast!
Hey Chris, glad to see the channel growing! Could you perhaps do a breakdown of Shadow on the Sun? Really like Cornell's vocals on that one and I'd love to see your take on it.
Great suggestion! It might be time for that!
Yeah!!!! Finally, thanks Chris!
You're welcome Cristhian. Thanks for watching!
ive always loved 1-2 songs and finally looked at his other stuff...HOLY shit, he has a wierd powerful gritty voice on so my songs...this is almost clean singing for him lol
Dude.. by about 6 mins in when you’re getting to the really contrasted “yeah” “you push it”
You had me (while singing along) genuinely laughing so hard and feeling great!
thanks for the video. I’m definitely going to watch more of your videos like right now…
Um P.S. if I may say, I think some people might not be able to stick with this video as your way of explaining things is very…direct, like, try as you go, in the moment trying to access things that one may not have had the confidence or experience to try. But for me already being a musician, and one who is mainly self taught, I really appreciate your style here.
Ps part 2: the “I see it -ooo- I need it”
Part is fucking amazing, that is really vulnerable as you said , and will definitely take me a lot of practice…
Thanks again!!
Honestly really helpful video
I can’t believe I’m only now singing after watching your video like I always wanted? I’m so excited every time I go to the mic knowing you’re technic! I’ve done push it with out your lesson on my channel! Next time it will be with the same song but new voice? And then we will see the difference cheers man,
Awesome video man, would love to see you analyze "Stingwray"
I saw Static X like 6 times. Super fun shows. I got fun stories
I love this ❤
Wow please do more of those analysis, that was awesome! maybe try "im not a just in case - static x" around 2:20 mins
Very cool!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!
This was cool 👍
This is such a great album. So much amazing production, and Wayne Static was a one of a kind musician that can't be truly replicated (although his replacement is fine). Whoever decided Wayne Static should be one of the guys that sings one of the original songs on the Queen of the Damned soundtrack (probably Jonathon Davis if I had to guess) was a genius with their finger on the pulse of metal music at the time. Wayne Static isn't necessarily a typical "singer" but using your voice to make incredible rhythmic sounds is just as awesome as being able to hit high notes and keep pitch. It's just a different kind of musical genius. One that gets less attention, but is just as impressive.
This is damn scientific and practical!
I’ve just covered this on my channel! Cheers man I’m gonna learn this to do it more justice? Cheers man,
In the first couple of minutes, this took me back to the 80s and early 90s way that wrestlers spoke during the interviews. Think Randy Savage and Slim Jims.
Awesome
Honestly i loved this band and music at the time and it all sounded all the same each song. Im glad for the isolation tracks to hear his voice closer
I hope someone makes a video of all the weird noises Chris makes in this video clipped together. Great video btw.
Chris - this has opened up a plethora of nuances I never knew to look for in vocals - thank you! ...And I thought I was an audiophile......even took a year of Sound Engineering at Columbia Academy in Vancouver back in '93.....whadda waste of $10k!
Very nice
Полезно, спасибо.
My wife would be laughing her butt off if she heard these sounds coming out of my studio. Well done, bro. This is the honest help we all need.
hey this is pretty cool
have you ever heard of devildriver? that singer also has a quite unique voice. might be interesting to dive into that eventually as well
The bassist contributes to the vocals, that's why it sounds like two voices
ive gone years and years with no vocal help, think i sound similar to wayne through all my years of practice. I even do a good impression of brian johnson. I love doing impressions! think Rick Sanchez is similar to wayne who i can also do.
well im late to the party, but just wanted to point out, that the low growl in "yeah", its made by the bassist campos, and you can actually see this on the live performances and on the music videos, he does a lot of backing vocals, RIP Wayne.
Hey chris I love the content and I have an idea for you. I think you could look at Ryan Tedder for your next episode, he’s always living up there in high notes and I think he has more different approach than a lot of singers you’ve covered. It could be a whole new perception for us
Ohhh great idea!
Great video! Are you planning to do more false cord videos? I've dealt with it since few months and I'd love to see you explain how to growl :)
Yes... I'll always do regular videos on false cord techniques. I've done quite a bit already too and they are some of my most popular videos... So absolutely more will come :)
