Shaun Morgan has a nice sizzle to his grit and that wonderful Kurt Cobain influenced relaxed aggression and desperation to much of what he sings.
There's a lot going on with Shaun's voice and when you start to dig into his isolated vocals, you get a real sense for just how much the amazingly creative production techniques enhance what we have come to know and love about Seether's vocals!
Join me for some study and experimentation of Seether's "Fake It". We'll talk compression, distortion, vocal layering and the unique way Shaun uses certain vowels to make his voice stick in your ears!
Seether is usually hand-waved away with all the other post-grunge bands, but I truly think they were the best of that whole era in radio rock

There new album was amazing
Like a lot of bands out there Seether's radio hits don't really do them justice I think people skipped over them in the early 2000s and I'm not sure why. They've stood the test of time and are still making great music. But "No Jesus Christ" will always be my favorite song.

One of my favorite song of my favorite bands analized by my favorite music producer, vocal coach and teacher. I had so much fun singing this, brought a lot of memories and discovered a lot of things in the vocal production that I didn't noticed before, wich is really useful for me, I find my gritty voice more similar to the one Shawn has and more easy to imitate than the gritty voice of other artists, and Morgan knows perfectly how to use every aspect of his voice in the best way. I'll also take all the production tips for my own music. Great as always Chris, thanks!

I would LOVE if you did their song 'Pride Before the Fall'. Shaun does some of the most intense screams I've ever heard.
Hearing for that bridge for the first time I was sitting at my pc, and started yelling "SEETHER JUST DID A BREAKDOWN!? THEY DID A BREAKDOWN!!"
Shaun has some incredibly aggressive screams and that song might be his best work yet for them
The way he doesn't even say anything coherent in the bridge is just absolutely timeless. Gives me chills every time! Truly harnessing that aggression and frustration in such a primal way

Awesome breakdown Chris! Once again showing the power of great vocal takes in combination with top notch producing with all of the subtle and not so subtle fx that give us the end result.
Love these videos where you go through individual vocalists, not just because of the content in the video, but also because these videos are a great way to encourage aspiring singers (like myself, though I use the term "singer" loosely in reference to myself) on how to get better at their craft. I figured out too late in life that it's not just important to have someone show you how to do certain things, but the most important thing is to teach people how to teach themselves. And these videos do exactly that.
With that said, one singer I'd love for you to do a video on is Dallas Green/City and Colour. I think he has a quite unique voice. And his performance of "Rain When I Die" from the AIC tribute at MoPOP, is fantastic, and very unique, and would probably have made Layne proud.

I love this band! I remember the 1st song I heard on the radio from SEETHER and was immediately blown away! It was REMEDY! I said to myself, self who the F is this band! LOL! I actually just started my post covid concert shows with JERRY CANTRELL this past week on the 6th of APRIL at BIG NIGHT LIVE in BOSTON with my youngest 24 yr. old daughter who I took to her 1st concert in 2019 to see AIC and KORN at XFINITY CENTER also in MASS! We live in RI! On the 23rd I'm going to MOHEGAN SUNS RESORT in CONN with my only son and his wife to see, SEETHER, BREAKING BAD and another opening band who I forget the name, WHOOPS! I can't wait ! 💜I came back to my comment after you gave me a BIG HIGHLIGHTED HEART and did you notice anything ODD about my upcoming concert show on the 23rd where I type in the names? I laughed my ASS off! I ACCIDENTLY called BREAKING BENJAMIN another name, They're now called BREAKING BAD!!! OMG!! STILL LAUGHING AT MYSELF!! 🤣😂😆😉🤭💥🤘💜

I’ve been trying to teach my self to sing for years because I really feel moved by the voice of some of these bands and really want to replicate it. I never tried to watch UA-cam to help coach myself because I thought I was missed the natural born talent to sing but just after a few videos I feel like I am starting to understand the science behind it. Awesome to see my favorite singer in one of your videos! I really struggled to find where to get compression in my vocal tract until one day I tried to sing along to Seether’s “Let You Down” in a clean tone. I didn’t know how to place my voice to sing as high as the I in “I will only let you down”, so I was afraid I’d make a dumb sound trying to sing the note. Thanks to me being scared to sing the note though, I actually held back air in just the right place to sing the note with grit.

I’m not sure if you’d be willing to react to foreign language music, but the Japanese band Maximum The Hormone has some insane high-pitch screams I’ve never heard anyone else use and I’d love to hear your take on it. The song Bikini Sports Ponchin has a lot of it right from the start and the full song has a wide variety of vocal styles so I think it would make a really fun subject for a video!

I never really understood how to place his grit until you explained the difference in resonance. The difference between forward and further back has been more of an accident than an intention for me, and I can see now how so much natural grit can flow from that placement

This is awesome! I'm finally making some progress on getting distortion in my singing voice! Do you think you could do a video on Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach? More specifically with something from scars? I really wanna learn to do those screams he does.
Always like the lifting references. I joked with a buddy of mine that I should put a mic in front of the squat rack so when I'm coming up under 700+ pounds and fully braced I can perform my screams lol. The nice grunting/roaring sound has some serious potential if I could shape it into words :D

Hey Chris, I checked some of your videos about distortion/grit in a voice, but I can't figure out how to get an effect David Gilmour has on a Young Lust live or studio record.
The more aggressive sound isn't hard to me, but the timber is too high and voice is too metallic and raspy. Sounds like a duck, no matter where larynx is positioned. David sings with consistent, soft, saturated, rich, throaty, both low and mid range voice.
Any thoughts?
Also I wanna say that I've found your general approach very helpful to me in a pop and soft rock context. Thanks for all of your lessons.

you say that the grit springs out under the idea of lifting something heavy.. i am curious, as that implies tension, however i am aware a relaxed state is optimal for any kind of vocal performance. where, then does that tension arise in order to get that gritty sound?

There's this singer from indonesia from the super popular band named peterpan.
He has very pleasant grungy distortion.
Seems like he distort his voice in a very relaxed way without even using compression.
Some of the songs for example of his distortion are "bintang di surga" "Tak ada yang abadi".
Will be glad if you could teach that 😬
I'm not sure I'm qualified to teach songs in other languages or work with artists that are not singing English because I don't fully understand the connection between the language and the resonances necessary to create the appropriate sounds. I only teach stuff I can actually demonstrate and really have a good command over!

@@chrisliepe Of course! I love watching your vocal breakdowns and your tutorials. Your videos have helped make me a better singer, and I'm so grateful to you for it. You've helped me unlock parts of my voice I once thought myself incapable of reaching. I can now sing more aggressively without hurting my voice, and I can reach a wider range most of the time, although sometime I still get locked in my chest voice for some reason.

I think what Chris reffers to, is to the aproach of a more "grunge attitude" when this particular style is sang, which is more like a "carefree" kind of singing. But I definitely agree with you that when approached the way it's done at 7:00, it have a more punk rock sound and style. Didn't notice that.
@@DeAguaMusic Yeah agreed. I get that it’s not gonna give you the stereotypical genre sound (and I also assume that’s what he was kinda inferring). I just wanted to mention that it depends on the context. It’d be gold for a punk rock cover. Happy accidents and all that.
