We recently had a chance to sit down with our good friend Ulrich Wild and I take a look back at a song he produced over 20 years ago! - That song is “Push it” by Static-X
Over the 20 years Ulrich has worked with countless artists and is known for his work with notable Metal acts Detklok, Pantera, Static-x, White Zombie, Deftones, and Breaking Benjamin, as well as more eclectic artists Emilie Autumn, Stolen Babies, and Fiddle Witch and the Demons of Doom.

I was lucky enough to hang with them on a few dates as my friends Pitchshifter were touring with them through Texas and California. I hadn't heard of them or their music so to experience it live for the first time was amazing. Every night, I made sure to catch their set - they were as tight live as they were on the album. One of the shows in Texas was with Godsmack. They were great, but there was always something special about Static-X - I don't know if it was a hunger but they had an urgency about them that was compelling. I got to interview the band members on what it was like to tour with Pitchshifter for the video I was shooting for my friends. They were very accomodating and supportive. A good memory that surfaces whenever I hear their music. Thanks for putting your magnifying glass on this track. Excellent.

When did the radio ever care about what people wanna hear? I remember, that I sold 250 copies of our first album in 1996 only by using it as "shop music". I was working in a videostore and we were able to play whatever we like, so I chose to play my own stuff quite often and all of these were sold just because people came asking what record this would be.
So many bands would have performed much better if there was more diversity on the radio.

Hell yes did I see them live!! It was such an unbelievable line-up for me at that time: AMEN opened the evening (Coma America got stuck in my head now writing this), followed by Mudvayne and Static-X afterwards with Slipknot having their first gigs in germany after becoming kind of popular in europe... i'm 33 now and am getting goosebumps while remembering the unbelievable hype inside me, making me jump and mosh and headbang that whole night!!
In may 2001, as my fascination for heavy music was just ignited and I was an absolute Slipknot nerd, my parents gifted me the opportunity to visit my first big concert for my 15th birthday. Still got the ticket here... so my father put me in the car a week later on a monday afternoon, we drove for 2 hours to Oberhausen (Germany) and I was having the best experience of my live up to that point, changing my musical life forever up to this day :)
Thanks for asking Warren, you reminded me I need to thank my parents for this and everything again and ever on :)

"...you have to make decissions; ...it's easier to fix an less ideal vocal sound than an uninspired vocal performance..." 2 sentences that you can frame yourself! Nice insight into the work of Ulrich Wild. I like his calm style and the approach to not worry too much about what equipment really needs, but to work with what you find and make the best out of it. The hectic music industry clearly needs more people like him. Thank you Warren for this...

My old band used to rehearse at the henry ford building in downtown la. Same place static-xand fear factory had rooms at.
Soo much talent in that place, we all would listen to fester doing the whole evil poetry thinig up on the roof. I remember the birth of evil disco. I had this program called acid and would make stuff with it and play it out the headphone jack of my crappy laptop and in thru the pa and my band would all jam, with heavy detuned dean avalanche 7’s.
Then fester heard us and invited our singer who was a baddass drummer to record some disco style click tracks with v-drums and then our drummer would play over that and we’d heavy metal techno out songs like donna summers badgirls in double drop b, and play stuff like that for the strip club across the street. Lots of funn stuff during that period. Static-x will always have a place in my heart.

I was introduced to this song by some guys that were always searching for something heavier. I remember seeing the video and thinking -- these guys are goofy, but it's a great song! The imagery they were going for came through loud and clear. I was amazed at how tight everything was. The drummer sounded like a drum machine (but.. he's actually playing it -- that's real!), and the guitars sounded like static, white hot and with blade-like precision. Hearing this again takes me straight back to being out on my own for the first time, discovering life. Awesome.
It's also really entertaining to see the real people behind these songs. From all the energy in the music, I always imagined a bunch of guys breaking things and acting like animals. Instead, you get Ulrich Wild. The name paints a picture of a rabid jackal. Nope. Just a talented music nerd (--intended endearingly), respecting the art and the craft, and doing his thing with skill and poise. I assumed I would be out of place with these people, but I think I would fit right in.
    Love it. More please. :-)

I’m lucky to have seen them once at ‘06 Ozzfest with Wayne and also on the reunion tour and they were both awesome and different.
Ozzfest ‘06 I was 17 or 18. It was at an amphitheater which suited Ozzy at night a lot better that Static X in failing daylight. They sounded great, and I remember being really stoked to hear their latest “Cannibal” material.
The reunion gig I saw last year was downright unforgettable. The singer did a great job. Everyone says it’s the guy from Dope, I think it’s confirmed at this point. I remember being struck constantly at how the live engineering was excelling at making the vocals notably but tastefully more ghostly with verb and delay than on studio albums and in the past with Wayne.
Of course it was cathartic to joyfully mourn, dance and scream in unison with lots of people. But it wasn’t all “guys head banging in the front and chicks dancing in the back”. Trust me, that pit was a rave and that rave was a pit - everyone together. It really was an evil disco.

Literally open mouth reaction. I remember a gear review Wayne did back when where he said "use what you know" (SIC) ... I feel like I write, record and produce using these same techniques. This is such a fantastic preview of the painstaking process it is to not only create, but produce at the same time. Then, try to communicate what you did 20 years ago. AMAZING!!!

The late 90's heavy music scene in the midwest really was something special... I have a crystal-clear memory of seeing Static-X for the first time, standing arms-length from the stage on a hot summer day at an airfield in Ankeny, Iowa (practically in Slipknot's back-yard... they played that day too, and it was incredible!).
Anyhow, I think you're spot-on with the "battle cry" sentiment - I get that vibe too, and wonder if that played into this being the opening track on their debut album (and the starter for many concerts)... sort of a "hey, here we are" statement.
Finally, I have to say, when you mentioned opening for Godsmack around 1999 in Iowa or Wisconsin, it got me wondering what band you were in... I might have been at that show!

Wisconsin Death Trip is a defining moment at the end of 90's music. It helped us move on from grunge copycats & transitional one hit wonders. It will be required listening for hard rock fans....for the rest of time. Ulrich Wild deserves far more notoriety for his ability to capture Static X & their essence, so perfectly. He did for the band what Butch Vig did for Smashing Pumpkins. Its criminal that Wild didnt get the recognition of someone like Vig. I very much enjoyed this chance to hear his thoughts on the recording of Wisconsin Death Trip. Thank you!

Another kool one Warren, even though Ulrich, couldn't remember much of anything, from the gear side of things....
    still pretty kool.
I VERY MUCH.... remember meeting Wayne, way back in the day... walking through the parking lot, of the first/second Ozzfest…..he just kinda... walked up, to me.... and was offering me a disc, of his band.
I figured... he was just some dude, attempting to get his music out....and after an hour of talking, that morning, before the gates opened up... I come to realize, they/his band... were playing that day....
his hair, was different to say the least.....but I really liked Wayne, and he is sadly missed….and for sure, his name...is forever welcome, in my home.
Thanks Warren!!! Loving it...keep up the hard work!!!

Thanks man, this was great! I actually had one of smallest Valvestates when I was low on cash, and I really liked it but got a tube amp when I could afford it. I think I was in denial and couldn't accept the Valvestate actually sounded great, lol

This is one of the best yet! The drum technique is similar to what (if I'm not mistaken) they used on Thrice - Vheissu, where they recorded the drums and cymbals separately. I'd never personally go that route but it's bloody interesting! Amazing work!
ALSO I have a Valvestate 8100 sitting in the studio that absolutely kills on leads and layering!

Ok so I'm just catching up on Ulrich's CV - his hand has touched many a great album without me even realising. It would be great to hear some of his stories from making some of the following records - Prong - Rude Awakening / Strung Out - Twisted by Design / Handsome - Handsome. These are three of my all time favourites and still get a lot of play. Plus they are also used as reference discs for when making upgrades to the hifi.

Thanks for another great video Warren. Despite being heavily into White Zombie etc Static X were a band that passed me by. Opened my ears to a new band! However, the influence from Prong, one of the most underrated metal bands of the last 30 odd years cannot be overstated. I can see why Static X wanted to work with Terry Date as he produced Prong's classic album Cleansing and White Zombie's Astro Creep. RIP Wayne.

Masterclass at its best! This reminds me of OC CA when I worked for LA times sunday paper around 2000. My coworker was like “Hey you guys wanna hear something rad” it only took the intro of Push it for me to love the whole album. My dad was a hardcore christian so I had to listen to this album on my cd walkman in secret 🤫 lol 😂
