Vocal ANALYSIS of "The End of Heartache" made my vocal spidey sense tingle! Operatic vocals?

- I am constantly grabbed and allured to vocalists that can use both harsh and clean, and from what I heard that's exactly what I would get from Howard Jones. Even having an operatic quality to them, this live performance truly gave me a taste of what Killswitch Engage can do, and I have to say the wait was too long!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Killswitch Engage for the very first time, performing "The End of Heartache” live.

I still do watch it from time to time

I thought this was from that DVD, Adam's cape clued me in
This song and My Curse were a huge deal for the heavy music fans that were teenagers around 2000-2010. Defined an era.

I saw them twice live. The second time, Howard comes out sipping on some tea and lets the crowd know that his throat is shot, but that he's gonna give it his all. As the set goes on, he's singing less and less and you can tell his throat is just giving up on him. End of Heartache comes up and everyone can tell that he's got nothing left in the tank. So the crowd sings the entire song. That was far and away the best concert I've been to because of that moment. Didn't matter that it was in a school gym somewhere that was way too big for the amount of people in there. You could tell he wanted to put on a show for the fans who had come, and when he couldn't anymore the crowd picked up the slack. That to me was always what going to shows was about. The music didn't matter, it was the people around you.
Nice!
Dude that sounds absolutely incredible, I hope that someday I can go to a show like that.
Great story!
Brother, that is literally one of my top 3 feelings I've experienced in my 36 years in this lifetime. There's just something so special about a group of total strangers experiencing and expressing the same thing like that. It taps into something that I think has been there for our entire history and it can never be taken away from us.
This is a great story. Reminds me of the first time I saw Shinedown when they were on tour for the Us and Them album. Brent dedicated Simple Man to Dimebag, and then the crowd proceeded to sing the whole first verse. Brent just stood there and before jumping in for the chorus said "this is the coolest thing I've ever seen."
I think Howard's opera background is a big factor in how incredible his vocals are
i'm pretty sure howard doesn't have an opera background. where did you hear that? i can't find anything on it either.
I remembered watching a old show where he sung. In the movie, he choked a girl out.
I've heard this about Warrel Dane of Nevermore. Does having an opera background also help with your vocal fry?
@@NpausAsHawjHoward is classically trained. I have no idea about actually being in an opera, but he is trained to do so.

@@chasmai8423 Light the Torch and he did rose of sharyn and end of heartache with KSE. Don't know if I've ever seen a crowd go that nuts as the moment he took the stage with KSE again.

I went to that tour 🤘 he sang 3 songs with Killswitch and the crowd just kept chanting "Howard Howard Howard" after each song. One of the best concert moments Ive seen in 20+ years of rockin. God damn national treasure!
Rose of Sharyn by Killswitch Engage is a excellent example of Haward's voice. It was written about his mother after her passing.
Beautiful song too. And very dynamic.
Facts, still one of their best tracks and I doubt they'll ever beat it.
Yes please! this would be a great reaction

@@KSE12789 Saw them just prior to the covid lockdowns with Clutch. I'm going nuts on the outer ring of the venue, not down on the floor as I'm not into that scene now in my 40's. Anyway, my buddy elbows me and I look up and see Jesse running by us. A couple minutes later, while jamming out, he jabs me again and I turn around to Adam staring down at me. Most definitely. The Zen of Screaming was a game changer for me.
He sure did. So did Jesse later on.

Howard was born for metal music with his voice. Dude is legit a legend in his own right. Sad that Killswitch Engage doesn't get the recognition they deserve.
What lol killswitch was massive in the late 00s. They gained huge recognition and nearly every metal core band that came out after tried to ape their sound.
@@fighterx4133 Jesse Leach is not a good singer. Howard dwarfs him in every sense. Even today people recognize Killswitch but only with Howard's voice.

@@Loopholez91 Jesse Leach is a good singer. Yeah, he's not Howard, but he doesn't try to be. Very few singers can do what Howard can do as well as he can.
Strongly disagree with your last comment. They write much better music with Jesse IMO: obviously nothing that's caught on like My Curse did, but far more consistent. Their first album is almost universally regarded one of the GOATs of Metalcore, and their last few albums have performed substantially better than anything they did before.
@@leerobbo92 you’re wrong everybody knows it. Jesse Leach can not sing at all. Could never sing well. And The End of Heartache Album is without a doubt the best Album they made. And guess what?! Nobody really cares to listen to Jesse sing when they can just listen to Howard’s vocals. I’d rather not feel like there’s a cockroach in my ear digging away. When I can listen to Howard’s deep amazing voice that can put people to sleep.

I, for one, would love to see that happen
Howard’s vocals at this point in his career were just crazy powerful. This whole shows dvd is a must watch for any KSE fan

I agree. And Jesse Leach is the goat. Howard is amazing but Jesse absolutely made AOJB
@@nickscherdin9823 you are 1000000% correct with this sir
Such a damn good album. 100% agree. I found KSE a couple months after their first album. Can't lie tho, it took a while to get on the Howard train. I was young and didn't know how to appreciate different metal styles. Fkn love both singers
Alive or just breathing was THE best Killswitch Engage album of all time. Although, Howard is the stronger vocalist all round and I've seen both Jesse and Howard live. Jesse stuggles to match the records live and can run out of tune sometimes whereas Howard, on a good day, was practically flawless.
It's gotta be an amazing feeling to know you can just hold your mic out at any time and the entire crowd will carry the song
I was at this show and when the chorus hit at the beginning and everything afterward you could not hear Howard at all from the crowd. We were all one Voice. It was a magical night. A night never to forget. You can even hear the compression put on the mic to filter out the crowd cause of how loud we were.
I cannot even imagine what the atmosphere must've been like in that place during this song...electric probably doesn't even begin to describe it.
I was there as well ...a night I'll never forget. It makes me a bit sad knowing that no show will ever come close to this experience. Home town, amazing performance, a band at their peak firing on all cylinders....and no cell phones.
Wasn't at this show but another one of theirs at The Palladium and same thing. Just completely drowned out the band. Only other time I can think of where that happened there was one year seeing Rhapsody and drowning them out during the song Dawn of Victory. New England metal heads know how to get it done! \M/( )\M/
Holy hell, i was there to! What a great show. There was a few years stretch where I did not miss them when they came to the Palladium.
Even when I saw they in Dallas last October (of 2021) the crowd was so loud. I remember that concert and that shit was crazy
I can totally recommmend their Cover of the Song "Holy Diver" by Dio. It evokes even more reminiscences of operatic singing and is a well done but also funny nod to Ronny James Dio. Jesse Leach (current singer) and Howard Jones (former singer and long time Substitute for Jesse) even perform beautifully together for the song "signal fire" by Killswitch Engage.
Signal Fire is absolutely AMAZING. I saw them within the last year and while they didn't do Signal Fire (I wanted Howard to come out soooo bad) they did do Holy Diver with Jesse and the entire show was absolutely top notch, they sounded so good it was like a studio performance with cheering added in.
wouldn't it be awesome for KSE to have both Howard and Jesse performing side-by-side
One of the best covers. Right up there with Hurt by Johnny Cash.
@@JosephAlanOliveros They did a song together called signal fire and they just toured last year together. The bands are still very close and I'm sure they'll continue touring together into the future
@@bwats1991 that's where I get the idea that Jesse and Howard should sing together for KSE - they complement each other on that song (I'm listening to it at the moment)
FYI, the reason people have referred to opera with Howard is because he was classically trained for years. Also, the guitarist you were referring to is “Adam D.” He produced many albums in the genre including his bands (killswitch). Glad you appreciated the band.
This is a live performance from a dvd that got me through large part of my childhood. This band was always one of my favorites. Regardless of how late it is I LOVE seeing them get more recognition and appreciation. One of the greatest live performance metal bands of all times.

Their album, “Alive or Just Breathing” literally didn’t leave my car CD player for a year while in High school (I am a big fan). The band continued to find success with Jesse’s exit and Howard’s entrance, and ultimately Howard’s exit and Jesse’s return. I recently, and finally after a Covid reschedule…got to see KSE (with Jesse back, taking over vocals once again for a few years now) - with Howard’s new band as a supporting act. Of course KSE and Howard did some songs together - such and amazing experience being able to see both singers.

KSE is VERY much a "call and response" type of band with their live lyrics/sing alongs.
Also Fun Fact: The Guitar Player doing vocal harmonies is Adam D. Main songwriter of the band as well as being a producer/engineer. He started as the drummer of the band.
His solo album (from adam)is also amazing!!
adam D also won an episode of 'the price is right'

Bloodmeat by protest the hero
@@UrbanSkyProject yea. Scurrilous and Volition are a better representation of his vocal talent.
Perfect video and perfect song by them! 🖤🤘🏻
THANK YOU!!
thanks a lot for your appreciation...
That clip bring me almost 15 years ago, and literaly bring me to tears...thank u so much
I've seen them live several times, and what was really amazing about this is that this was often their last song, or near the last song. So he's singing like this after an hour of screaming.
Seen this band live and it was incredible , the guitarist is a mad man and went to get a beer mid song while playing
I Approve ©. 😂
Did you see them in Louisville? Adam did the same thing when I seen them in Louisville. Maybe he does that often but I was at the bar as well when this same thing happened
I appreciate you doing this one, going to see them live next year and been a fan for over 12 years. To hear you say: "He is good" made me smile haha.
One of my all-time favourite songs. Still get chills when I hear it.
I am beyond excited to hear your take on this one!
I filmed all of the Sion videos with him and Dines, so I was lucky enough to be in the studio with him. He’s incredible. Watched many 1-3 takes.
I'd also recommend Alice in Chains and Pantera if you like Killswitch Engage. ☺️
Yo!!! Dude!!!! Thats such a flex hahahah, awesome
There’s nothing better in a live performance than the band being pumped up and actually enjoying what their doing and seeing that joy and excitement.
Oh my gosh, i have wanted to recommend him to you for soooo long! I am in love with his voice!!
This song carried me through some really tough shit in my life. KSE will forever be a staple on my playlists.
Almost twenty years later and I'm still waiting...
A lot of us have had a good cry listening to killswitch.
Dont wait.. move forward friend :)
One of the metalcore G.O.A.T's (if not THE G.O.A.T). She is definitely in for a treat.
I'd give the title of THE G.O.A.T. to Trivium.
@@henrihell This same DVD, so many bands, though I don't recall if Matt is one of them comment on this specific album and how this is the album every one of them were wishing they had written instead. Matt's singing (and screaming) has gotten so much better since his work with David and developing his range during Silence, but Howard has always had that. There was a tour where Howard filled in for Matt when his twins were born, and Howard filled in and filled those shoes just fine. I love BOTH bands. This damned DVD though.
Wtf is metalcore you kids love dividing music up into genres and subgenres
@@ScreamingInSong I mean it's a killer album for sure. Just feels to me like KSE are riding on this one album only and the others don't get much attention. Trivium's evolved and pushed out killer albums most of the time rather than riding on the success of one album. As for vocal ability I don't care one bit who's the better vocalist as it doesn't matter for the question one bit.
The Howard era of killswitch was incredible. Saw them live once, most intense concert I've ever been to
If you ever consider revisiting KSE, may I recommend the cover they do of Iron Maiden's "Holy Diver"? It's mostly more of the same, but it's an awesome cover and Howard does a great job of walking that line between making a cover that pays homage to the original and making the vocals his own. Even if you don't make a video about it, it's well worth a listen! 😁
You’re reaction to the beginning, absolutely priceless ❤
You should check out "The Signal Fire." Howard Jones and Jesse Leach both are fantastic vocalists and that song really highlights the both of them extraordinary well
Hell yeah! I'm glad Jesse and Howard could work together and give the fans something we've been asking for for years. We love both of them!
That video and song was the culmination of like 20 years of fandom. Amazing.
The best kse song.
I love that song.
I have never gotten goosebumps from something so fast...
I watched the video with no idea they were both in it.
I saw a comment from Jared Dines that said he is just happy he lived to see this moment... then I waited to see what that was.
I was not disappointed.
KSE give me only good memories of old friends and the people I grew up with.
Hands down my favorite KSE song without a doubt, just wish they would do more together.
Howard Jones and Jared Dines project “Sion”.
Song: The Blade or More Than Just Myself. Excellent project and album by those 2.
IMO Howard is the best Metal vocalist of his generation. He has such a distinctive sound and can switch between clean and dirty vocals so smoothly. You cant help but sing along with him.
Killswitch and Howard meant a lot when I was about 15. Rose of Sharyn will always be one of the most perfect metalcore songs ever written! Love the melodic riffs and songwriting too!
Melodic metalcore
The epitome of metalcore is Rose of Sharyn. Powerful song through and through
I remember watching this song on VIVA recorded on VHS in Germany, must have been in my teens. I replayed the song about 20 times and absolutely freaked out because that was the first time I heard Metalcore ever and of that quality
The shocked look on her face just tells how amazing his voice is. That was how I looked when I first heard them and I feel goosebumps seeing the same reaction I had when I was younger.
Ive never seen a video of yours but i loved this so much i subscribed. If you didnt say a word, your face showed all the excitement, joy, appreciation, shocked, and just impressed. I dont know if you have done metal before or if you personally enjoy it but i appreciate how much you enjoyed and resepcted his talents
I've been a metal head forever and I really appreciate how you're opening people up to this music. So often I hear, "there is no talent in metal" and things along those lines; when simply, thats not true!
So thank you! This is fun for me to watch you analyse these amazingly talented vocalists and instrumentalists.
I would recommend Alice in Chains and Pantera if you like metal/Killswitch Engage. You might've heard of them already, but I thought I'd suggest them anyway. 🤟
@@hollyhayes9640 me?
@@hollyhayes9640 if you're referring to me, I'm already a massive kse, fan. Ghost walking being one of my favourite kse songs. I'm already very familiar with all the bands you've listed. Appreciate it though
I realize the focus of this analysis may be of Howard's voice and his fantastic vocal abilities but the main reason why people like him are amazing is because they give off an energy that unites a venue full of hundreds if not thousands of people. The energy and atmosphere of these shows are a testament to how powerful music can be. The memories made from the shows last a lifetime too.
I love how animated you are when reacting! It’s what set you apart.
I love that you picked this DVD! I wore this thing out when I was in my twenties. I still actually have it. The end of heartache came out when I was a senior in high school and it blew my mind. Howard is amazing.
I was at the show that this was filmed at. Literally one of the best shows I've ever been to. Howard is a super nice guy and always made time for fans
Howard Jones has ALWAYS been my favorite metal vocalist. He is insanely talented and the fact it's so effortless when he does either clean or harsh vocals is just nuts.
This is your best reaction. Your face when Howard started with the crowd hype is just top notch. Love it. Killswitch is such a great band with Howard or Jesse. Hope to see more KSE action on your channel.
I just need to say I love watching your facial expressions when you watch music like this, you get so excited it's awesome
*Fun fact* - Howard Jones (lead singer of Killswitch Engage) was actually classically trained in Operatic vocals before he was in the band. (That's why he has such a powerful voice.) 🤟☺️👌I believe he trained with Melissa Cross, who's considered to be a "hidden gem" (💎) in the metal community. I would also recommend a review of some of their other songs, such as "My Curse", "Holy Diver", "Arms Of Sorrow", and "Starting Over" (and possibly more that I'm not aware of) - although, to be fair, that whole album ("Alive Or Just Breathing") is good from front to back.
Edit: sorry to all metal fans, the *past* lead singer of Killswitch Engage. The current lead singer is Jesse Leach (I believe that's his name and how it's spelled.) (❓) He's the lead singer in this video, but not for the band anymore.
Edit 2: also, this song was written as a tribute to Howards' Mother, who passed away (I believe of c@ncer.) (Sorry for the @, UA-cam might delete my comment if I don't censor certain words. I've had comments deleted before for similar reasons.) (UA-cam, please allow my comment to stay up. 🥺🙏)
Also, I tried to headbang to this while eating dinner. My fault. And I would also recommend Alice In Chains and Pantera if anyone reading this comment likes Killswitch Engage.
Well now she’s got to do Jesse leech. The old Jesse and the new Jesse
He hasn’t been the singer for a decade now. But yes he has an amazing voice. Check out his new project Sion.
I have seen him in another band that kinda sucks
Dwayne Johnson and Howard Jones are brothers.......not realll....but sounds good
Jesse leach is the lead singer
I would recommend his performance with Jared Dines as Sion, The Blade, Inside the Hollow and Drown would go down a treat
Dude amazing song! Omg
I did not realize that was him in Sion!
This song is sooooo good. I don't normally listen to music with this much clean vocals these days but will always make exceptions for Howard Jones and this in my opinion is on of his best songs.
Would love to see her analysis of “The Blade” by Sion!
Had the privilege of seeing them a few years ago. What a show. So much talent.
I REALLY ENJOY YOUR EMOTIONS IN THE VIDEOS - SPECTACULAR
Howard jones is a legend. Such a powerful human. Love this era of killswitch.
Saaaaaaaame!
absolutely👍💪🏻💪🏻👊🔥
Saw them live in highschool at headbanger's ball, absolutely amazing. Howard Jones has massive pipes. Great singer, great band.
Greatest tour of all time. Lamb of god, kse, shadows fall, god forbid
Great video now I wanna go watch the whole concert
Watching him live was such an amazing experience. He legit sounds the same live as he does on the recording. That itself is crazy impressive. His stage presence on top of crowd control has always been impeccable. Hands down in my top 3 live performances I've seen in person. He is definitely an underrated vocalist, considering how amazing he is.
The pause at 4:18 . If you see the giant speaker/s on stage, the tallest one. He legit dropped from those into the crowd back first😳, was crazy to watch.
They did this song called my curse. That song is amazing. One of the most legendary, if not the most legendary metalcore songs of all time. Also, they did a cover of holy diver by DIO. They made it their own and it is just magnificent.
Yep. "As Daylight Dies" was the absolute peak of KSE for me. I can still recite every lyric from that entire album, 15 some odd years later now.
Howard's voice is simply honey for ears
I agree!
